PES 2018 BETA Discussion Thread

I'm confident Adam and Co. will not speed it up. Soooo many people say keep the pace the way it is.

My experience has been great. The issue I had was already fed back, and Adam was already ahead of the game and addressed it - confirming they were fixed in the gamescom build:

I hope this means they really only fixed the mentioned and not simply resorted to speeding up the whole game.

I'm not going to lie I did have one match just now that the player was cool as hell. It felt like playing a smart COM/AI not a human being. He was passing around, having fun, exploring scoring options, in the end 88th min I scored a goal with Neymar, and ended up with one nill win. Online experience does change the way we think about gameplay - at least for me. The game becomes boring and dull when 95% of the matches are kids with 3 bar assist passing playing ping pong football. One thing that does irritate me is player responsivness. They are NOT that responsive. Im not sure if online lag is causing this but I feel like if I want to pass the ball to a nearby player my opponent reaches to me and grabs the ball away even though I pressed the pass button. Just feels like reponse of a player needs to be improved. So far I have had zero lag to deal with. I have about 100mbps internet speed.

Sounds a bit like the guy that I played. .I nearly nicked it at the end as well. I'm having problems with reponsiveness as well . .very slow reactions sometimes.

I don't know what to make of this. Since I'm an offline player mostly, I cannot judge it because it's online with a hint of lag which cause a very slight button delay and might cause people to think it's slower. Plus playing humans is completely different to playing AI. I did have fun playing Steve from here though. That was an unexpected surprise, lol.
...

Hey Lami, that was hilarious :) Guys, like a lot of you in AUSTRALIA, I couldn't get a match started - waiting well over 5+ mins before cancelling. Then I got calls from a couple of mates who just dl'd the beta, both living at the opposite ends of the same city I live in (Canberra, Australia). While on the phone, we tested to see if by pressing the begin match (1v1 with exact same match making details) at the exact same time as eachother, we could somehow get connected and matched up against one another. Didn't work.. and then as my mate quit, I suddenly got my first game vs Lami hahah.. I was still on the phone with my mate at the time, commentating and letting him know how I found the game.

I enjoyed the game a lot :) I was pleasantly surprised, as I usually get more lag playing pes online. That's why I don't play pes online.. the lag. I'm like you Lami, I'm mostly offline as the smallest amount of stutter or slowdown is a deterrent for me. So for me to fully judge, and in fact enjoy this game to the fullest, ill be playing 1 vs com, or doing the pes nights having co-op or multiplayer (1v1 or 2v2) offline only. Cannot wait for the 'DEMO'.

But, what I got from limited time with the 'Beta':
+ Awesome pace..nice n realistically slow.
+ Ball physics are amazing
+Finally some passing errors when on full manual.. ie. a few times point a certain direction, and the ball would go ever so slightly a few degrees off to the left or right causing an error. I'm guessing, but not sure, that the passing on full manual is now more stat based. This not only includes direction, but also with the power.
+ Finally, there are real trapping/control errors... At one point, I passed the ball with full power aiming for a distant player, but instead it ricocheted off an unexpecting nearby player. Noticed little errors throughout the beta play.. the ball is much looser.

-only real negative if you call it that, is that some shots still seem OP.
-one more thing... game seems to lean towards attacking, meaning its easier to attack than defend. WE9/pes5 and pes6 had an awesome balance in that it was much easier to defend than attack, and often this was the reason it was hard to break down defence (in multiplayer) and scorelines were rarely that huge.
-...oops one more... and probably most important for me are the camera views. As most of you know, now you can select all the camera views, however, the customisation for parameters like zoom, height, and angle are still locked. Since I'm a full manual player, It makes a huge difference, playing vs cpu in my favourite angle, getting used to the touch of manual passing/shooting on that particular angle, and then not being able to select this exact camera angle during online.

BUT GUESS WHAT (in case none of you have tested it), during a gameplay pause, you can actually go into camera settings, fiddle with z,h,a paremeters while in the menu and see these changes visually being made to the camera. I actually thought it finally worked. However, as soon as you then go back out of menu, and in game, the camera reverts to the default view (unchangeable parameters). Weird stuff.. like Konami were going to let you do it, but didnt have time to fix it... guess its a beta and it may well be posible in the next build - fingers crossed.

It seems like I plan on playing a lot of PES 2018 this year as long as there are no handicap or catch-up bug.

Edit: Much more enjoyable than PES 2017(where slow players easily catches up with faster players) and the players feels so much different from each other. The passes are hard to achieve as well but I am playing on PA 1. Hopefully this year, bigger teams like Chelsea, Real Madrid, Juventus, Munich, etc will give me a harder challenge than Sunderland, Real Betis, etc.

At first I had about 5 - 7 games in a row.
I was impressed...won some, lost some.

But wasn´t sure yet what to think of it. But one thing was clear:
If you play it yourself it´s totally different than watching videos...it´s just not the same and Chuny is right not to watch them. But I can´t be that disciplined.

Took a break as I had to do some errands...came back after a couple of hours...and then it clicked.

I have to say, I´m loving it. Animations are important to me and they are beautiful! They make everything on the pitch a lot more lifelike and dynamic. Makes me keep watching replays several times. I also like the slow down in the replays but I don´t like when the perspective switches from a good one to a bad one before the score. Why do they have to copy that from FIFA?

btw, FIFA...
it doesn´t feel like FIFA to me at all. It also doesn´t feel like PES 2017 to me. It´s similar but not absolutely the same so this is much more than a refined PES 2017 to me.
It reminds me a lot of something between PES 2011 and PES 2014 and I really hope KONAMI will stay on that base now and don´t fuck up 2019, as the cut from PES 2014 to 2015 was too extreme for my taste.

Pace is great, graphics are better too...I truly see a difference in graphics, but mostly in the cut scenes.
Ball physics are great, also on low passes...very PES 2014ish.

Connection was good...sometimes my player didn´t react when I hit the pass button, but I guess that´s gonna be fixed.
Had two full manual games in a row and they were just great!

But then I had a few awful ones and here comes what I´m scared off:
Had it in a few matches that my opponent passed the ball to Neymar and tried to run through my defense, just like I experienced in FIFA 15. Dribbling seems to be easier with the right player.
But defending...I find it harder than in PES 2017, which maybe is a good thing.
In PES 2017 when I anticipate and press the X button in the right time, my defender moves his foot and steals the ball.
This doesn´t work that good in this game. Often the defender just approaches but is not stealing the ball really.

I have to figure it out and get used to it...I think you have to be better positioned now, but those cut ins by a striker like we saw in that trailer from Coutinho are maybe a bit too easy.... can´t say for sure yet.

For me its like this.

- defense seems underpowered, especially against the best players, if you run, run, run and run (and from time to time do a trick) with one of those, the defense seems helpless and simply let you pass and creat a shooting chance, too FIFAish, my biggest concern

I would take this as an example (but there are tons of goals like this) https://twitter.com/KurosakiCarlos2/status/888063187299569664 5 or 6 defenders did absolutely nothing to try stop him, neither at least an attempt to block the shot. Come on, this is FIFA 17, dont make PES a game like this...

Yeah that´s what I meant. I hope it won´t become like this.

Some guys I read on twitter are driving me crazy with their stupid feedback. Saying the game is too slow and have input delay. Also saying passing is a bit hard and seems off. Like I don't get it, do they want arcade or football simulation. Either ways I hope they don't listen to those dipshits. If you love FIFA so much why do you even try to make PES like FIFA. We want simulation, real football. If you don't want that, then stick with FIFA.

I think this comes quite close to a simulation and they shouldn´t touch the pace at all.
As I said above: KONAMI, stay on your track...don´t change nothing, don´t listen to the R1 spammers!

Waiting for the demo. But probably a day 1 buy for me...lowest price is 28 € for PC what I found.

Will wait for demo to judge.

Edit: oh and to call this a totally new game that has been in the making for 3 years and has nothing to do with pes 2017......... Right...

btw, Lami, I loved that Pogma goal you scored at the end... looked very natural. We have to play full manual next time. This is something Konami need to fix, ie. allow players to edit their control scheme at the beginning of the game or anytime during the game, rather than just trying to match make (with or without restrictions) assuming both players wont want to change.

I also noticed that you can pause and adjust camera settings...even though they don't change. but it does seem that you can select a custom setting of 5,3,3 as one of the camera settings. I like the dynamic wide or live broadcast angles as well :)

From operation sport forum:

Found a kinda workaround for playing with friends.

We picked 3v cpu
Set same difficulty level
Hit matchmaking at the same time

7 games in a row

Might be worth a try!

Guys would be nice if you would put which was your fav PES games so far next to your opinion. Its hard to judge from these "worst game/best game ever" comments.

thx in advance

Thats not a problem at all if its not an AI error which makes the players ball watching, Bryan said you have to relearn defending. In FIFA17 its still a risk and reward, if you cover well then you just cover you have to time your tackle before the risky final 3rd i hope its kinda of the same in PES2018 altough i see where are you coming from with FIFA15 as i couldnt play it bc of the same reason and also in FIFA17 i had to use sliders to push the D-line more up to solve this and to tighten the space between the mf and df.

I´d recommend to play it yourself whenever you get the chance. If you can´t play the beta now then wait for the demo.
If you´re on PC, well....meet a friend with a PS4/XBOX or something or be patient.

Everyone is individual and has different impressions. I totally can´t agree that it feels like FIFA and I don´t agree that it´s 100% PES 2017. It is similar but it feels very different.
As I said in my post, dribbling reminds me of PES 2011 and the base is very PES 2014 like, but better.
PES 2011 was my all time favourite and I was one of the few people who liked PES 2014.

Also...
I had different feelings from my first 6 - 7 games between the games I played a couple of hours later.
I´ll never understand the people who judge the game after one match only...

Yeah that´s what I think too.
You have to relearn it. Plus, I´m not sure but I think defending worked better with France than with Brazil (I didn´t notice that I left Thiago on the bench all those matches), so individuality in defensive players is there probably.

Caught myself too often in PES 2017 when I held down X + square the whole time till I got the ball. This is not working here.

Its not really a problem that its FIFAish i guess as in the past years the vanilla FIFA is more like a PES game :')

Btw its good to see online works much better. Konami neglected it for....for...7 yrs or more?

I had 3 matches this morning. One against a pa1 guy and 2 against manual player. Besides the server performance being better this morning, I had so much fun!
The manual guys played my style of soccer. No rushing, no spamming... just nice build up with a fast counter in between. Added this guy right away to my FL!
The pace in 2018 is so golden!! Damn how I love the speed!!

Was gonna say, I've added / received friend requests from about 8 people so far when we've had really close games. Had a brilliant 2-2 draw with someone last night, both of us using full manual and just a real battle in the middle of the pitch.

I can't fault the PES team really because ever since the 2015 game they have improved it each year bit by bit finally its getting somewhere they just need a new shooting system more than anything
Yeah, I agree. Yesterday I played a couple of matches (a 1 on 1 match and a 3 vs. CPU one) and I saw either rockets or the usual low ball on the far post (but played by a human, which is even worse).

The first match (1 on 1) has been pretty slow and enjoyable as we were both using PA 0.
I could definitely feel the difference between this beta and PES 2017: passing felt more loose, ball controls weren't perfect. The connection wasn't at its best (it lagged a bit from time to time) but all in all it was a very enjoyable match which ended with me losing 2-0 (a goal by Neymar who dribbled past my defenders with me being totally unable to stop him, and a rocket from just outside by I don't remember who, maybe Coutinho). The game speed was something like PES 2017 with speed set to -2, a thing which I liked a lot.
The only thing I didn't really like was that players still felt "too light". They didn't look to me like they were heavy enough in turning/accelerating (but it's Brazil and France, so they're supposed to be among the best players in the world: hopefully it's not like that for every player in the game).

The other match (3 vs. CPU) left me a little 'meh' honestly.
I got matched with a guy that knew what he was doing (no-nonsense plays, passes with purpose, timed runs) and with a guy that didn't have a clue about teamwork (all he did was dribble past the CPU defenders and then place a low controlled shot on the far post). We won 4-0 but I didn't enjoy it that much, it felt pretty spoiled. I didn't play that good either, the only thing in which I got a good rating (better than my teammates) was the 'proactive defence' (probably because I tried to cut passing lanes when controlling one of the players at the back, managing some interceptions), but the guy running alone and scoring the controlled shots had the highest rating of all (and this makes me think that that's the way it's meant to be played).

The potential is there, they just need to rework a little the shooting (Adam said they're adding new shooting animations, right? Hopefully the shooting will also be reworked so the outcome actually depends on the animation, and the animation depends on balance/position of the player and on where the ball is).

Who here is on Xbox? Wondering if I played any of you last night.
Hey man. I can play you on Xbox if you like. Well if it does work. Just let me know if you're interested.

The funny part is that I intentionally kicked it first time hoping the keeper saves it because I felt bad enough playing assisted while you're on manual, and it flew in :P

PM me in psn whenever you're ready. Oh, and always use your phone for messaging ;)
We need a real full manual filter (pass and shoot) for the online 1vs1 and Co-op
Don't we already have that now with matching similar levels?

It's not possible to kick the ball away when the ref blows the whistle! :(
I used to do that all the time! Minor, but I miss it!

Lots of manual player this morning. Takes a minute and I'm in for a manual soccer treat! :)
I know right it's my thing :D
Also I keep waiting for the arrow to appear on corners and other setpiecesi actually feel kind of lost without it now. Lol

Adam mentioned on Twitter that only 1% play manual so they not going to put resource behind getting this to work 100%

I feel that they only have 1% because of the lack of control on it. If people keep getting paired with assisted players and subsequently hammered they not going to keep trying.

Not lost, but yeah, something is missing. But I don't mind. It just looks new, because we had that freaking arrow over years.
I'm glad it's gone. Loved the old system.

Did I mention the ball physics seem better?! And a lot of loose balls when battling in midfield. Even when collecting the ball there is error sometimes and the ball bounces somewhere.

One match I had the guy did not skip replays too. I love that!

Couple more games this morning.

I realise it's more of an online test than a gameplay test, but the more I play it, the more I think it's absolutely brilliant (when the speed is slow at least, I had another 100mph game this morning but that's the second time out of ten games).

I didn't feel much player individuality in 2017, and I wasn't feeling a great deal of it in this beta originally, UNTIL I played with the advanced tactics and started trying to bring my wingers into the game. Suddenly, when Dembélé had the ball... Wow. The amount of times I've (just about) managed to dribble and run past a defender to get a cross in, where I've tried to do that with a different player and hit a brick wall time and time again (even running out of play on occasion).

This feels like the kind of PES that, thanks to the individuality, will give me 50 new favourite players, in the way that I use to love Babangida and co...

Absolutely massive but, though.

In half the games I've played, my opponents have hacked at my players all game long, making tackles that were nowhere near the ball, and only occasionally get a yellow card, let alone a red. From previous videos, it seems like the AI doesn't foul - but even if it does, these referees aren't going to do anything about it!

But most importantly... Shooting (the whole point of football)... It sticks out like a sore thumb as the only part of the gameplay that doesn't feel right to me. It's not even about the physics of them (yes, they're all absolute rockets) - it's about how the game translates my input. I don't feel like my input makes much of a difference to the resulting hit.

I'm getting so much satisfaction from putting together a passing move that leads to a scoring opportunity - but then I press shoot, and I feel like the AI takes over at that point. I scored a goal with Giroud where he slid the ball underneath the keeper, when I was trying to smack it past him. So I'm left feeling like an invisible older brother muscled the controller off me and said "no, you're rubbish, THIS is how to do it".

I'd rather miss and learn from it, than be "given" goals...

I know that "advanced shooting" exists, but that option isn't necessary in other games because there's enough manual control without having to resort to something so over-complicated (in my opinion). However, I'll be giving it a go tonight anyway!

To be fair, advanced shooting in the beta has felt a little odd so far. I've had a couple goals that have been quite nice but otherwise it's a similar experience to you. The best thing I've found with advanced shooting on the beta is placed / finesse shots, they definitely a lot more natural compared to PES 2017. Otherwise yeah, agree with all.

Fortunately Adam's already said that shooting / animations related to shooting has been worked on already for the demo / Gamescom version. Hopefully it has!

finally played my first game. I had lag free here in USA. First off completely different base game than 2017. This game is better than 2017 already. I play full manual broadcast camera and it was a great experience. Got my ass kicked 4-0 because i didn't know how to play it. So different than 2017..Loose ball better player movement. To keep it short, what i just played was a FIFA killer! I'm very impressed! Lots of positives in PES future boys! Yeah, and fuck all those videos that rubbed me the wrong way, after playing this i guarantee this is better than 2017. This games truly top notch.

Having different animations while shooting isn't the same as having variation on shooting/deflection.
I don't care if players shoot with a different posture related to their position on goal.
It wont change the direction, perhaps the shoots power (even if we don't know if those animations will impact gameplay...)
If you make a straight strike, the ball will be exactly straight on the middle stopped by the keeper, like i've got repetively on matchs i've played.
