I've been pissing about with the old version of the game today and last night. I initially couldn't tell THAT many differences, but after awhile your unorganised defence starts to leak goals that you feel helpless against. You start to feel like the control system almost gives you too much control, like you can skip past the opposition midfield with ease - even with your defenders. You can't help but notice at least half of your goals are follow-ups spilled by the keeper. It doesn't feel good.

I cleared my cache and reinstalled the patch about 2 hours ago and have had about 4-5 games. I said earlier that they've gone back to the PES2013 way of controlling players. Nah, the 360 movement is still there, and you can shift the body of weight of your players, but you have to be more selective with it now. You can't abuse it to ghost past players. The games I played where tight affairs, an absolute joy to play. I played as Atletico Madrid and those complaining about individuality; what are you on about? Hamsik moved and played different to every other player on the pitch. Diego Costa is a monster. He feels different.

I hate to say it, but I almost feel like those who are being very negative about this new patch almost want the game to suck. It's like they'd struggle to function if they weren't complaining about something. This is by far the best Pro Evo game that has ever been released. It's not perfect, but it's the closest thing you're going to get to playing football on a console until 2015 comes out. This patch is a revelation.

Well said, the game is really enjoyable now plenty of close contests and midfield battles, there's a lot of variety in the goals as well, I can't stop playing it!

True say.

You are making me consider to buy the game again.
Sold it at January

What about referees? Do they whistle or not? I watced several postpatch video and they still seem to be bad

I'm getting some good joy from the game (despite being relegated my first season). But shooting seems a bit out of wack, both for power and accuracy. I lost my last game 5-6 with Cattermole (!) scoring absolute crackers from a standing position at the edge of the box. Total power from a complete standstill.

Or perhaps you just haven't had enough time with the new game to be able to make the advantages in player stats count. This is effectively a new game..

But if that were the case, I shouldn't be able to draw Barcelona with a team like Heerenveen. Why aren't they destroying me 4-0?

What I meant to say is that I want the difficulty of a game to be decided by the strenght of the opponent. PES 2011 got this right, while with PES 2013 a game against Barça felt the same as playing QPR. I'll give 2014 a try in a competition mode, but I'm not very optimistic about it given my pre-patch experiences and the two exhibition matches described in one of my previous posts.

Have to disagree. QPR were a bitch to play in my ML last year. Far tougher than Barca, never beat 'em

But I get your point. Hopefully next year they can spent a lot of time on AI + player and team individuality.

Tried the game today (on a friends PS3) after a very, very long time without playing it. Ugh, I was quickly reminded of all the reasons why I stopped playing. Response times are still horrid, simple dribbling is clunky, trapping is unnecessarily slow, passing and shooting feels as stale as ever.

I have this feeling that Konami decided that the current consoles can't handle the full fox engine and so took out the revolutionary MASS-animation-system and replaced it with an animation-system similar to PES 2013's one.

Through that decision they got more free CPU-power that could be used for AI, which lacked before.

I hope, if this is why it happened, that for PES 2015 on nextgen, the MASS-animation-system will return in its full glory, cause I think that is the way to go forward.

Ouch I'm not too optimistic for when I get it on PS Plus on Tuesday then. I pretty much had all the same opinions on the game as you did :(

Have you guys ever actually enjoyed a football game before? I'm not being a dick. It's a genuine question. I'm wondering what football games you've played that created such lofty expectations.

I play the PS3 version of the game a lot and I know that those criticisms are all over exaggerations.

But the fact is frame rate issues dissapeared. I think that was the most important factor with this patch. Now when it is gone they can focus on gameplay tweaks and response will be a part of that. My bet is that the last patch arrives in April.

I've loved all the PES games from ISS on the SNES to PES 6, didn't like PES 2008-2010, absolutely loved PES 2011, liked PES 2012-13 and plain hated 2014.

It's just some people's opinion, that's all, but all the talk of the patches were getting my hopes up a tiny bit. Of a similar note to what you're saying, I personally didn't understand at the time of having the game in November how people could like the game with keepers being so appallingly bad to the point there I saw huge blunders every four or five matches, an AI that tries the exact same passing moves over and over, and a game with no long range goals of any description, bizarre high defensive lines, massive reliance on lofted through-balls, and the worse Master League mode of all time. Add to that the massive palava surrounding patches, no transfer updates, no news of patches, my 360 version couldn't download the data packs for ages, and nope, I'm not someone with lofty expectations.

If you're insinuating that people who didn't like the game were simply having too big an expectation level then I don't know what to say really. The PES magic in this version had totally disappeared, the randomness had gone and every game felt the game. But that's just my opinion of the game from November, I'll try it this week and see what I think of it now.

I don't think so, I don't particularly like the dribbling in this either, but I concede that a lot do. What I really didn't like was the way players almost stopped completely to trap a simple pass. Hopefully that's been patched out now.

You may not like the dribbling, which is fair enough, but it's not clunky.

The vast majority of those issues you've just listed have been rectified with the latest patch. High defensive lines, massive reliance on lofted through-balls, a game with no long range goals, etc. And yet we still have overly-negative posters coming on after having played 1-2 games condemning the latest patch to the shit heap. It seems to me that no matter what Konami churns out, no matter what Konami does, some people will never be happy. And that's why I asked if you've ever enjoyed a football game before. I'm not being funny, but PES has always sported terrible goalkeepers. I played the absolute shit out of PES 3, but it had major, major issues, and yet we all looked past them back in the day.

ISS from PS One till PES. When it was introduced to PC I played PES 3 - 6 there.

This was right shit right there.

FIFA since 96 till FIFA 2005. Quite different approach on football. This is when FIFA for me was more like playing chess (you actually had to THINK how to break defense, but then after a while you found that one way to score).

The problem is, this pattern is backwards now. FIFA is fun, arcade but with realistic animations, fast paced, end to end action game. This is why I loved PES 3-6 era. They were the same.

PES is now boring, stale, not fun, frustrating. Yeah, it reminds me of those old FIFAs a lot. It plays like chess, it's heavy and there are certain ways to always score goal. This is why people hated FIFA before (on PC/PS2).

Wonder when KONAMI/PES Team changed the approach so drastically? They had awesome formula. They didn't need to reinvent the wheel.

Why PES has strong fanbase on PC?

Well, mostly due to how EA treated PC fans for years. Denying NG version on this platform. KONAMI had massive chance to dominate here, but sorry, they failed with their games too (were better by fair margin, but had flaws with outdated stuff). :(

Now I want to give PES 2014 last chance with 1.08. patch, but hmm, nowhere to be found. Shame shame shame. Don't some users have right to feel vexed?

Gonna have to hop for PES 5/6 again. Arigatou!

Hopefully those issues have been fixed, I'll find out soon enough. As for keepers, sorry I can't agree. Up until the point I got rid of the game in November (so I'm not talking about the game since any patches after then), keepers were the worst I'd ever seen in PES by a country mile. In fact, I've never really had an issue with keepers before PES2014. In this, I could barely go 3-4 matches without seeing both keepers palming shots into the net, running under the bounce of a ball, plain running past the ball, and best of all, diving out of the way of the ball as it travelled straight at them. Yet at the same time they were totally unbeatable from 20 yards or more.

That was then though, hopefully that's been fixed. But how anyone could claim back then that keepers were not worse than previous PES games is beyond me.

Something isn't quite right here and I'd like some feedback on this.

After I first downloaded the patch, Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 underwent a ridiculous overhaul. It's almost as if Konami reverted back to their old animation system. The game was more rigid. The back four stayed where they were, dribbling wasn't as dynamic, etc. It's like I was playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 with a graphic upgrade. The amount of changes to the game was a bit mind-blowing. Almost hard to believe.

Well, I decided to completely wipe my hard drive clean of all PES files. No option file, no data packs, and no patches. After playing the game in it's original form for an hour, I soon got bored of that and redownloaded the latest patch and all of the data packs that released since release. What I got was a completely different game to the one I played after first downloading the newest patch.

I couldn't help but notice that some people here have talked about Konami giving up on the animation system. That the new patch no longer utilises M.A.S.S. Someone even described the patch as a "Pro Evo 13 + 14 hybrid". That is exactly what I got after first downloading the patch, but downloading it a second time it's completely different. The animation system is the same. It's nothing like Pro Evo 2013.

I think something has gone wrong somewhere for some users downloading the patch. The M.A.S.S animation system is still being used and yet some of our posters seem to think they changed the animations. They have, in that it's smoother, but they haven't dumped their core system.

As I say, I'd like some feedback on this.

I'm sorry for asking this again, but is it just me or is shooting off the charts for both power and accuracy? I've got ridiculous scenarios with otherwise blockheads taking shots from a complete standstill from the edge of the box with absurd power and pinpoint accuracy.

p.s. otherwise enjoying the game tho it is very difficult for me, relegated first season, bottom of the 2nd division (0-1-4) second season.

it's not just you. Shooting in 1.10 is pretty crazy. Feels like almost every shot on target is either a goal or it requires the keeper to make a crazy diving save/deflection.

i agree too, ps3 just cant handle the new engine, and at the start i thought i was seeing difference in individuality, but the more i played it nearly everyone felt the same, and also iv noticed theres no agility, all players turn the same dissappointed

I said from the get go the Fox Engine was made with NG consoles in mind. The decision to release PES 2014 on current gen has backfired. I understand the "more users are still on current gen" argument, but the sales have been poor to say the least.

Played last night some more:
It's indeed still the same animation system, it's just reduced a bit in its possibilities.

Slowly but surely the new patch grows on me. I love the new challenge posed by the cpu ai.

But shooting is a bit too precise.
