I feel this is much improved. My mate's over for a few and we're giving it a bash, we're both well pleased.

Shooting and responsiveness is better, shielding off the ball and ball physics just seem more natural. With faster one touch play you can really recreate some realistic passages of play.

I'll need to test it vs. CPU later on to judge it more. Keepers have been ok too btw. some great stops and some howlers, the new trajectories while shooting have made the GK's more lifelike perhaps? I dunno, I'll play more.

The patch is much better than I expected all in all, because I expected very little, given Konami's record.

Played a mate yesterday whohas made the shift from PES topercieved greener pastures and he isn't enjoying PES because for him its too cumbersome. Heis annoyed with the touch needed when the player receives a pass and inablity to turn quickly.

He is frustrated with the lack of dribbling which he seems to have a genuine issue with. I was able to glide past 3 of his defenders with minimal use of the feints butcan see he is not feeling it like he did 2013.

He says FIFA is much easier and a lot more fun because of it.

I on the otherhand prefer that PES is going this route of realism - taking body weight, momentum and inertia into consideration.

Is this the problem? Has PES become too hard to master?

If it is how many people feel this way? Is this going to mean it is either fun or realism? Can you have both? Lots of questions that I think only time will answer. I think Konami should just. Stick to their guns. PES2015 should justbe an improvement. Theycanbuild from this base as EA have done since FIFA10. Constant chopping and changing alienates your fans. Both hardcore and casual.

Good question.
But I think it depends on the priority of aspects people have.
Some things are more important to one and less important to the other.

All I can say, that it is a quite different PES and I understand people who keep playing PES 2013.

I also respect anybodys decision turning his back on PES 2014.

To me, this game feels like real football.
The animations, the life that´s going on on the turf feels so realistic.
Of course there are a few things that bug me and there are so many decisions made by KONAMI that I don´t understand and don´t agree with.

But on the pitch, to me it´s a lot more fun than FIFA.

And I never thought that I might say this one time:

The player animation in PES is better than the player animation in FIFA.

If someone says this is the best footy game then he havent tried any other in long time....and not crappy pes13 12 11 but ...earlierPES games maybe FIFA

its just an okay category without spirit combined with the lazyness of konami...faces stadiums game modes immersive effect

this is far from an aaa footy game what pes should be nowdays as only 2 games on the marketp and its like 2 teenagers working on it every weekend

People who claim this is the worst football game ever have no idea what they're talking about.

I don't want to sound rude or prudent here, but there are as many opinions, as there are asses we sit on here.

Now I want to ask question to people, what platform do you play PES on?

This is very important in this situation on differing opinions. Why? Let me just say that Xbox 360 users were presented with 3 patches before 1.04. hit the download.

This would mean X360 users, should in theory, be offered the best game already before 1.04. patch hit. As to why, I believe Xbox 360 version, despite the abysmal support for Data Pack downloads, had no stuttering, lags, slowdowns to begin with. Thus the changes perceived by Xbox 360 users will be much smaller than those on PC/PS3 who had to wait for 1.04. patch for almost 1.5 month after release of the game.

PS3 users, probably right now, are playing what Xbox 360 users were playing since game release, but slightly more polished here and there. The same goes for PC users.

However, I have concerns with what I read on WENB. If this happens to be true, KONAMI again, did something to save this engine on Current Gen platforms.

I mean and from what I saw on pictures, they degraded graphics yet again. They lowered poly count on stadiums and lowered texture resolution on players to attain more balanced frame rates. Sure, you won't at first notice differences, but they are there (yair could confirm this right?).

I haven't had chance to play the game with patch yet, but pre-patch, I could tell you that if you allowed AI to play their game, they would be more varied (understandable), but as soon as you came out and dominated them (not that hard to do, even if you're not trying), the AI goes haywire and into total panic mode, not knowing how to play football anymore.

Unfortunately, on PES 2013 I did try to do something about this with editing formations and tactics, based on what klashman69 (great job man) posted, but it didn't make that much of drastic change I expected. You could still easily dominate AI and they would still hoof the ball upwards like headless chickens.

Now on the other side, can someone with patch, confirm that Goalkeepers are vastly improved? As seeing Jimmy video, I am not convinced. They still look like they will palm ball into own net (check that backheel goal somewhere in video) or are easy to lob/chip (this I hoped that would be fixed because pre-patch it resulted in 9 out of 10 goals!).

Really happy for people who enjoy the game. As for representing real football, both games are still far from it. ;)

There was nice discussion here about player individuality, but I will be totally honest here, both titles do it WRONG.

Stats, although important in differentiating players from each other, are not what individuality is for me. There should be more to it, but I doubt we will see what I have in mind implemented in 10 years time.

They would have to first do something what NBA from 2K (Visual Concept) does each year. Motion Capture individual players. Yes, EACH player WILL be motion captured AT some point in 2k series of NBA (and yes, I do know that DB size is much smaller than in football game - no need to tell me that and that's why I have said it would take at least 10 years to complete).

Does it matter? YES, it does. It lets you differentiate player on the first glance, from posture, ankle movement, how his body positions when he shoots, his preferred hand, how he moves into defense, how his mimics work, how lifelike he is, etc.

Basing this solely on stats, although good in differentiating bad player from good one, is lacking. Because on PES/FIFA Xavi will use same animation for passing as Pirlo/Iniesta. Nathan Redmond will be able to do moves Messi does, etc. If they did mo-cap from scratch and for each player individually, skills/player cards would be the thing of the past imho ;).

But like I said, it's very sci-fi at the moment, but I wonder if others had similar view before?

@Shikashi

Actua Soccer 3 was actually pretty good for it's time and that your post reminded me, we had so much more football games back then to choose from, now limited to only 2 ;).

I agree with the last sentence, but I think people really have no idea what they're talking about when they claim PES 2014 is the worst football game ever. Is is the best ever? No. But it's certainly the first time this generation that PES has made strides to be competitive. This year is a stepping stone. The more people look at it like that, the better. It was never going to be fully-featured. It was never going to be the most impressive thing ever in terms of gameplay and AI. But Konami now have a base to build-on.

I do wish we had a lot more franchises to choose from.

As far as your question for keepers. They are better, but they are not consistently good yet.

Amazing. If I were konami I would have lost my mind ages ago

You can't please everyone.

Btw that person that insinuated jimmy plays cheap. Dude you are so clueless - true gentle man on the virtual pitch that.

By far the best football game on this gen - Great job on the patch, even though it should never have been needed that badly

Been playing this game solid for 3 hrs now and for me it plays amazing, by only having version 1.02 NO modified option files and I deleted the data pack, I must say now, it's the best pes iv ever played, still few bugs need ironing but apart from that I'm hooked

worst pes ever, i'm done.

What a very strange thing to say. Not perfect, but on the pitch this is possibly the best PES ever in my opinion. Also possibly the hardest, which I completely understand is a turnoff for a lot of people. Off the pitch is a different story really.

For once I've been consistent with my views at any rate, I'm just amazed that a few minor fixes and alteration have turned everyone from thinking this is awful to being the best football game ever.

I just don't see how the game is as realistic as everyone claims. Sure, players have some weight to them but that all foes out the window when you see the COM spamming long through passes, playing the same way from game to game, and with a total lack of variety in goals. I played a lot this weekend to try and get into it, every goal was borderline the same thing. It's a constant struggle to try and get the COM to stop Turing into some kind of end to end basketball match.

As for keepers, they're still messed up. They frequently pulled off superhuman saves from long/medium range then let in some absolute howlers from close range.

Genuine question, as someone who loves the game, don't you find most goals, and build up play, to be the same? Don't most goals come from one v ones with the keeper? Don't you get frustrated by the COM trying to force the match into an end to end through pass-fest? Don't you get frustrated when you score a goal only to notice the keeper leapt out of the way of the ball?

I'd be genuinely interested. It seems there is a small minority of us who's number one complaint is the lack of variety and how monotone the game has become, like every match feels the same.

That's so odd. I mean, I've only really played a few single player games since the patch (and MLO is still utterly hamstrung by its obsession with speed demons and lobbed through balls) but I definitely noticed the CPU passing the ball around very patiently at times, working the space forwards. I've definitely noticed the near post passing more since you mentioned it, but the CPU seems more possession based than the last 2 PES's at least, even if it's not keeping the ball like I tend to.

That's true, the COM does keep the ball and pass it around better than in previous games, I'd agree with you there. But somehow when both sides get into the final third, goals seem to mostly come from either crosses or clean through vs the keeper. I still never see any long range goals, but I never see goals that differ in build up and most goals seem to be from identically placed shots from the same angles etc. That's what makes the game feel repetitive.

The game still also suffers from this strange PES2014 phenomenon where it'll be tough and not let you get a kick in one game, then the next it'll open up and let you score with ease. That in itself ruins a lot of the satisfaction of scoring.

To be honest I don't really have an issues with most of those problems you describe although I can understand how some would I suppose. I always read your posts and think to myself, he's on to something there that probably needs fixing but for some reason I can look past a lot of it this year. While playing PES 2008-2013 I couldn't though. Yes it would be nice if the COM was more varied in its play and I still believe shooting and heading needs work in the penalty area as there's just too many times I hit the shot button and either nothing happens or the player strikes too late. But overall I love the way the game feels this year, especially in the middle of the park. I play offline only, on professional, 0 bar passing, manual shooting, default game speed, player emotions off, custom camera with panning and I love the challenge. The variety of goals I score with the manual setting is very acceptable to me. The only thing I really do not like is the need to use the right analogue stick to really extract all the juice out of this game on both offense and defense. But that may be because I'm just not that coordinated. Also, off the pitch this game feels unfinished for some reason.

When you say player emotions off I suppose you mean Heart, is it?
Are we now allowed to disable it in every game mode or are you referring just to exhibitions?

I played a few games with the patch and i think it plays a lot better now. It's much more fluid and that is a great thing. Shooting is better, more power and not every shot hit the target or has a straight flightcurve (is flightcurve the right word? Or how would you say in english?). Goalkeepers are better too. Especially on near post shots, which is a great thing.

On the other hand there is a lot more to do. I still don't see the AI shooting from long distance. Corner kicks are still broken because the AI will never ever score after a corner kick (all they do is lofty headers). There are still no penaltys in this game and refs refusing a lot of foul calls.

But right now we have a game and if this patch was the first one and other will follow soon, then it's ok for me. But if Konami stops here i will be disappointed.

Ah okay, thanks for sharing. I might give your settings a go and see if there's anything I'm missing! :)
