Pes: expect the unexpected

This is why Pes is Pes :D

So what are you complaining about? :)

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat and if it's likely to be fixed in the patch. If not I'll just play league mode and it's basically the same as master league anyway.

I've got some serious problems winning headers in midfield (playing on PS3). To be honest i can't win a single fucking header at the moment. I try to use r2 for a better positioning because that always work in the past but this time it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Is it only me or are you guys having the same problem? I play with a very high defensive line and i eat counter after counter because every long ball from the AI lands at the head of the striker.

I'm having very effective midfield headers (X) using R2.
While for attacking headers there is no way I'm able to take even one single header (I'm manual shooting though).
PS3 version.

I don't have any problems winning a fair percentage of headers in the middle of the park and for the first time in a PES game I'm even able to properly direct many of them. I'm not sure I have a particular technique but I feel like I'm tapping the pass or shot buttons a lot when I do win headers...

i play a very deep line, perhaps 3-4, but it doesn't matter. when the cpu regains possession in their own half they generally clear it directly to the noggin of their CF, and for some reason my CB always goes for the header, usually loses it and then is incredidbly out of position for a ridiculous one or two man counter attack.

first of all, emergency clearances are not passes. second, it should be my DMF going up for the ball, not my CB. Third, i dont want anyone going for the ball, i'm trying to play contain defense with a deep line. im willing to let the cpu have the clearance because he is all by himself, can hardly dribble, and has half the pitch still to go! FFS!

good day!

Are you pressing R2 very soon? I couldn't figure out the right timing it seems. My Defender doesn't move maybe i'm just to late? Maybe i need to press and move immediately after the opponent hit the ball?

I'm on standard(easy) shooting and have no problems at all with attacking headers. But from what if have read it's a known issue on manual and hopefully it will be gone after the patch.

Just tapping? I always press the button and hold it down. Sometimes my defender just stand still instead of jumping. I will try tapping then. Thanks!

Thanks for your replay and yes, that's sounds familiar to me. I need to find a solution because it drives me crazy.

But like you said "emergency clearances are not passes" and i feel this should be patched too. It doesn't make fun knowing the AI will find a perfect pass every time they clear it. It's strange because they miss a lot of passes during a game. That seems ok. Strange.

Yes, press R2 soon, even before seeing your player on the screen if the ball is arriving from the opposite keeper i.e.
I tap the pass button.

We got only football manager simulator.
PES and FIFA are arcade action games to fit 90min football game into 10-15 minutes.

This is also why the games (BOTH) actually play better with longer matches. You then have TIME to dally about and play possessive football and the AI seems to do more of it as well.

Can anyone confirm if, when playing in "League Mode" the seasons roll onto another, therefore if I finish 3rd in the League do I qualify for the champions league in the following year?

Yes it does, i finished 3rd with Valencia and qualified for the champions league for the next season.

My mind is still boggling, by the way, not just at how amazing this game is, but at the fact that some people think it's crap. Most people, apparently, if the forums are anything to go by. It's really, really depressing.

I can totally understand someone getting extremely frustrated with the little glitches, the lack of off-the-pitch stuff and the lateness of the DLC, and protesting that in this day and age it's just not good enough - yes that's right, Sir. But people think the game's crap? How can anyone who likes or understands football honestly think that?

Yeah, my goalie sometimes chucks one in at the near post. Yeah, I'm halfway through a season with Fiorentina and my home stadium looks not a jot like the Artemio Franchi. But I'm playing the most absorbing, intricate and fundamentally satisfying football game of all time - BY MILES AND FUCKING MILES.

I'm even getting used to the loss of the old R2 button stuff, thanks to the right stick. Pretty much the whole game is now about the right stick, in the way it used to be about R2: you can do so much with it, in almost any situation. In attack, in defence. The fancy stuff; the ugly stuff.

Incidentally, here's a really good tip. Before you start a league, go through all the teams, including your own, in Edit Mode, and move their defensive line down to 5, or maybe 6 or 7 for a team that always plays a pretty high line (you have to change their default tactic to "Custom" in order to open up the sliders, but all the other settings will just stay as they were so you haven't actually changed their basic tactics). Suddenly - assuming you defend properly - there are one or two 1-on-1s a game, or maybe even none in a particularly tight one. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this transforms the gameplay. It doesn't make them sit really really deep, it just makes them play a less suicidally high line. Then later in the game, if you're winning, the cpu will often switch to one of the more attacking tactic options, and suddenly you're aware of its DF line coming right up the pitch, dangerously high... THEN you start looking to catch them out on the break with a killer through ball. Much more true to life.

I've got this on 30 minute games. Loving every minute. Every match is a story in itself. So unbelievably deep... so many individual phases, so many little moments, the game turning on a handful of incidents, ongoing personal duels (stuff like man-marking works far better than it ever used to)... it's just amazing. Without fail, at some point in the second half, usually around the hour mark (as the twisting, turning story of the game is about to enter its final phase) I find myself staring at the screen and muttering "this - is - amazing." It's almost enough to make an old ISS-head like me cry tears of happiness. Not quite, like - I'm not a complete knob. But close.

The idea that a load of moaning twats who don't actually know what football is, and just want to run up and down with Ronaldo doing fucking rainbow flicks, might force Konami into changing direction and never developing this particular game, with all its incredible potential... well, if that ever happens it really is time to give up on humanity for good. I want to go round all these forums clipping these idiots round the back of the head. "Shut up, you bloody idiots. Go and play bloody FIFA, for God's sake. Let there be a football game for adults."

Because that's what this is, and my God we've waited a while.

This deserves a repost! My thoughts exactly mate!

It has potential, it can truly be one of the best football games ever, but as it stands, and I know this has been said 1000 times already, it suffers from too many baby-errors - shit goalkeepers, shit AI defending and shit awareness, to be even close to an "amazing game".

To say that critics of the game are Fifa-fanboys in disguise, kids who don't understand football, is a bit of a stretch, and almost insulting. Are you playing a different game to the one I'm playing? Have you not experienced the incredibly poor goalkeepers, AI defenders or running right next to a ball with a player who refuses to touch it? I just can't believe it, because all of these things seem to happen in pretty much every other match I play, regardless of difficulty or game-speed.

"Love it enough to critcize it", a wise man once said. It's not so black and white. It's a fantastic game, albeit an unfinished one, that desperately needs an upgrade to be considered a "complete" game, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, those expecting major gameplay tweaks are set to be disappointed as the patch mere includes improvements to download speeds for the DLC.

Not that I was expecting anything this early, but to release this as something even worth mentioning, hah, I don't know what to say. Konami-style, that. Oh, well, it doesn't matter, I'll be waiting for a gameplay overhaul patch in November. :)

I can hardly believe it, but I'm about 8 games into my 4th year of Master League with Utrecht.

ML is certainly weird, with hardly anything working quite right in its infrastructure. I've never had an offer to take a player on loan. In any given transfer window, aside from the List of Targets, their might be a dozen other players that I have a greater than 45% chance to acquire (according to some unnamed agent). Aside from youth team players, I think I've signed perhaps 6 players in 7 windows. And then, after winning the league this past year, I had an offer for every single one of my players except the back up keeper. I've never had a single penalty occur in ML. I've never had a full game injury. Never scored a corner kick header. I think I get less than a dozen goal-scoring free-kick opportunities in a season. I cannot for the life of me see a progression graph for my player's development. Even after winning the cup last year and the league this year, my training points have never increased. Frankly, until I saw it by mistake, I didn't even know I had a training regime.

Despite all of that, and perhaps those problems can be fixed, this skeletal ML is to my liking. With a proper Option File, I could play it all year.

I'm not running too hot and cold with this iteration. I've warmed to it, flaws and all. But I still would like to give a big f*#k you to Konami. We deserve bells and whistles, not just good gameplay.

There's no point repeating the problems with keepers, framerate, etc. Instead, I'd like to opine on two other things worth review, perhaps.

I don't understand why, under all conditions including adjusting tactics, the defensive line has to be so suicidal for all teams. If you've noticed that at times Professional can seem more difficult than Superstar, it's because the CPU on Professional (as in previous versions) prefers to lump the ball to the CF when ever possible, and because the defensive line is so suicidal, it just becomes a game of chance. Who will win the header? If the cpu CF can turn with possession--game over. If the cpu CF can hold the ball up and lay it off, then the CMF will chip it over or go diagonal to a wide open wing--game over. As in 2012, the cpu on Professional will do its best to bypass the midfield. Even if you put your defensive line on 0, your CBs will still rush up for the header and its game over. I'm a bit sick of it. I wouldn't be surprised, statistically speaking, if the cpu CF gets the most touches on the team over the match. Unacceptable, I think.

The second issue I'd like adjusted is zero pass assistance. Clearly the game pace changes on zero pass. The cpu still intercepts and toe-pokes just as much, but you are granted a split-second longer and I find there is much more dribbling possible. I use both sticks and R2 much more on zero pass because I have that bit of time. For me, the pace of zero pass is the pace of the demo and the ideal gameplay. Unfortunately, zero pass is just too absurdly wild; the power bar, too, is out of wack. I want this fixed. The game I love is Unassisted, but I can't play it without pulling my hair out.

--good day!

Edit: I had meant to say in the beginning of the post that I am sitting 0-3-5 in those first 8 games of the season. We lost the first game in extra time and our hearts our frozen. This I like.

By this, do you mean the through ball bug where everytime you play a through ball online, it doubles your input (1 press of through ball button = 2 consecutive through balls?). I've been having trouble using the through ball online without this bug. I don't see it mentioned much in the forums. Someone previously mentioned this happens onl on PS3 and only online?

No one else is having problems with using though balls online? I hardly see it mentioned on all of the PES forums I've been to, so I'm wondering.

Everytime I press the through ball button online, it duplicates my input.

1 press of through ball button = 2 consecutive through balls.

ATM I'm playing without using through balls AT ALL. I've learned to adapt using manual pass for through balls, but the lofted ones are impossible to replicate with the long pass button..

Ridiculous

Input lag, non-existant
Crazy defenders just standing there - nope
Terrible keepers on 1v1s - nope
CPU fouls - yep
Balanced offense/defense without your team playing a suicidal high line
Winnable headers but not over-weighted on way or the other
No online lag
Rain!
No clumsy collisions
No crappy fk cheat
No over easy lobs
John Terry isn't faster than Ronaldo on the field

etc. etc. etc.

It's fine to say "ridiculous" and pes2007 does have it's drawbacks, only 16 directions, etc. but playability wise, it's still ahead of where 2014 is now.

As I stated weeks ago, PES 2014 is 75% greatness, 25% shit. Until they sort that 25% out! I prefer a game that doesn't have a string of game-breaking issues.

Yesterday i had one of those memorable sessions of PES.
I know i've been ranting about the unfinished product that PES2014 (and i still maintain this), but yesterday evening i played two magical matches...really great.

I'm playing with Udinese and i had to play against Inter and then Lazio.
The first match was a really tense match that i won with 1-0. Some people would call my goal a GK error, but i don't agree at all with them (i still maintian that i don't see much GK errors and having been a GK myself, i know what i'm talking about). Undinese totally dominated Inter, but Handanovic was magical until the goal. And even then, i had a very good counter with a Di Natale cross that was deflected by Muriel. Handanovic had a fantastic save, but unfortunately for him the ball bounced straight into Muriel. I had to control the ball with R2 and then could score a relatively easy goal. This goal was in injury time of the first half. The second half was a roller coaster. Inter tried to pressure Udinese and all i could do was counter... The match ended in a hard fought but highly satisfying 1-0.

The second match was against Lazio. I couldn't score in the first half but i also dominated Lazio (both matches were at home by the way). In the second half i scored a long distance goal with my favourite PES2014 player Merkel: a corner was cleard um the field. Merkel catched around the middle circle, had a chest control, ran some 10 metres and shot at goal...a fantastic and very satisfying goal.
The rest of the match Lazio tried to equalize but left spaces at the back and i scored two very good counter goals...

A great night of PES.

And for the record: the gameplay is 90 more than OK, the best PES ever...shame that the finishing touch isn't there...really Konami....why do you always have to shoot yourself in the foot.

I really hope the upcoming patch will not change the gameplay but tweak it a litle bit, they need to iron out some things and then they would have the perfect gameplay. As for the rest...well i've said it all...no need to repaet myself.
