Yep, PES needs a community beta trial period months before retail.

A demo shouldn't be seen as a beta, it's purpose is to sell the finished product.

Oh, yes, you've hit the nail on its head there. With the amount of dedicated hardcore followers the PES-series have, I have always wondered why Konami have such a non-existant relationship with their fans. Now somewhat redeemed by giving Bhatti some sort of PR-role, but still, they basically have an enormous resource out there just waiting to be used, and would be glad to give them every help they could - for free, yet, there's literally no communication with them what so ever (except for this survey they came out with now, and have had out before, but I haven't really noticed that changing anything of importance).

And regarding Konami and keeping transfers and such up to date - that's another mystery about them. As are a lot of other things. It would be fantastic to be able to attend a Monday morning meeting at their offices and hear how their marketing people are working and what the general philosophy of the team is. I somehow imagine it being run and almost dictated by a mad professor type person who has all kinds of odd ideas about how to best move the game forward.

"We should really focus on getting transfers up to date this year, boss."
"No, let's add Super Mario backgrounds as an option in edit mode instead."
"Ok, so, we can't afford the licensing for a lot of stadiums, lets put in a bunch of generic ones, boss."
"No, let's remove some instead, and remove the stadium editor too, and lets put in a generic version of Guantanamera in the soundtrack instead."

Guys try setting your ps3 to 768p instead of 1080i or 1080p and report back. There's quite a bit more smoother play to me. Wonder if it's losing out on graphics then though.

So by saying you don't know, there must be no obvious drop in graphics which can only be a good thing. So is it a consensus here to use 768p?

Played a couple of games this morning to try and be really objective on the game without approaching it optimistically or the doom & gloom this last 10-15 pages has been.

Across the two games:

- Scored two screamers from outside the box on normal shooting
- Scored a fantastic header from a cross
- Got awarded 2 penalties
- Opponent got a yellow card
- No response issues or stuttering (US Xbox360 version)
- No outrageous goalkeeping or mental defending

I realize I may have hit the perfect storm where the most common bugs/complaints didn't occur but it genuinely was a fantastic experience. It shows the game can be close to perfection but obviously, the bugs reported are occurring to a degree it's pissing a lot of people off. I honestly don't see that a game-fixing patch should be an impossible dream.

What settings did you choose please?

Is the very worst in the UK, it's just disgusting corrupt here. talk Sport have Adboards in FIFA and typically on Wednesday a guy came in reviewing the game, said nice things about FIFA and took snipes and PES, saying it was bad because 'lack of licenses'.

It's pathetic, they didn't even mention the gameplay. It's so, so shallow but it works on society these days. Because the mass market doesn't know depth, are very easily lead and people are more insecure than ever and have to follow others and just regurgitate what people say on the TV, or internet or radio.

Konami needs to understand this if they want to increase sales. It's about Bells and Whistles and Gimmicks here.

Konami have it hard enough already in regards to it's game needs modding for kits and licenses which puts people off who just want everything setup and ready for them on release. The gameplay is clearly miles and miles better than FIFA's totally broken mess despite the flaws in PES. Even if this patch fixes all the flaws which it probably will anyway and be outstanding. You can't market that enough.

They need better networking and more contacts in the west. They need more people to invest and work in partnership with the game. Konami fail badly in the marketing war every year, it's not like the PS2 days where it wasn't nearly as blatantly corrupt as now. You need sponsor certain gaming sites and connect with more organizations to promote your product.

Also helps to finish the game ontime

There was a full two page spread in the Metro paper today about the FIFA phenomenon. It had its history over the years and sales figures. The writer practically messed his pants whilst writing it. This was then followed by a 5 star review a few pages later

But it's so easy to casually type "bring the production of the game forward", isn't it? The reality for a dev team is that you never have enough time, nor enough people and still a deadline to meet. They'll be crunching just to get the thing shippable for the date they already had.

Because games are exponentially more expensive to make now, it becomes ever more important to hit that release date (a date chosen for a reason) in order to maximise return.

Games these days hardly ever miss release dates, whereas a while back the industry had a reputation for it. There are reasons for that and Konami is in the same boat as everyone else.

Any feedback the community has (and one only needs to read these threads to judge the reliability/consistency or otherwise of that) can be for 2015.

I work in the software industry for a company that releases a few products annually available around the world that have been the highest selling In their markey since the 90's.

We had a bad version in 2008 and got slated. It had bugs and people didn't like it. Up until then we had always worked up to a deadline working around the clock in the last few weeks. It would go out and we would wait nervously for any problems to arise.

The best thing we ever did was bring sign off forward a month before release and the involve customers. People who work on PES will probably work on other konami projects around the year. Bringing work forward would not be impossible

You've edited out the part where you suggested my call for a beta was "self-serving", but I will reply anyway.

It's far from that. I personally don't care about playing the game early, although it is always nice if the opportunity arises. You may not know but my first sample of PES2014 was when it dropped through my door on release day.

I do care, however, about getting a more complete, stable product without silly bugs and niggles. If a beta allows a small section of the PES community to sample the game early (not just journos and hangers-on), and most importantly, get some serious hours playing time with the product, then I think Konami can get the feedback they clearly need well in advance of release.

Most of us here are fully subscribed to Konami's vision and principles, but for their game to truly shine the stupid mistakes must stop.

I know it's a pointless to ask if/when the xbox OF comes out but if anyone has a clue, please tell me because it's getting frustrating to visit all the sites 4-5 times a day.

have been playing a ML with Napoli. Very fun. I think shitty teams are really shitty in this game! Scored one time goals, hearder goals. Having a hard time scoring a driblling hten shoot goal from farther then 12 yards...

EA direct or indirectly through representatives paid good money for that! Or should I say dirty money. They use every trick in the book and them some.

Same people can see their games for what they are. They buy into this deception.

They're even trying to make real football look like a FIFA game. FIFA14 adboards plastered all over Premier League stadia, EA Sports graphical overlays on Sky Sports.

Life is imitating art.

Does anybody know how to get the fullbacks going forward? If I move them up the pitch in the formation screen as I did in PES2013 they change to midfielders. Playing as Everton, Baines should have been bombing up the wing but he just stayed back all of the time.

I just can't enjoy this game. I think it's less realistic than previous PES titles, and I think PES2014 feels disturbingly like FIFA in several areas. Ironically, FIFA this year is going the other way.

Konami are insisting they're going down the simulation route but to me it feels far from it. The way the players position themselves, the pockets of space on the pitch, the way attacking moves are built up in this game is less realistic than in PES2013. I know I'll get totally hammered for that, but who cares.

I just can't see how the off-the-ball movement of your team mates is any better than in 2013, chance creation feels like it's just a random occurrence rather than tacical build up. Everything about the attacking play in PES2013 feels 'tighter' somehow. There's space on the pitch in 2014 where there shouldn't be, as we all know, defensive lines are a shambles in this (had another game recently where my defender tracked an attacking run to the edge of his own penalty area when the rest of the players were still on the halfway line).

Also, another thing I'll get slated for, I feel like player individuality has been toned down even more. I can barely notice the difference between any players apart from having turning circles that are slightly faster. Sure, there's a difference between a tiny player and a huge target man, but everyone's ball control is virtually the same (not including the ML defaults of course), and passing doesn't seem to make any difference no matter who it is. I can still pinpoint place the ball 50 yards with a poor player than with a good one.

Also, using the R2 ball control is more instant than last year, I hate using R2 shooting now (my favourite PES feature before this game) and I also loved using R2 controlled pass, something now completely removed from the game.

Konami insist it's going down the simulation route but it all feels more loose, more open, less individual, more like a game designed to be exciting rather than realistic, and because of that, and somewhat ironically, the game now feels flat and dull. Scoring feels lifeless.

Add to that, I tried a Master League today for a couple of matches and there's absolutely nothing to do in it. Nothing. It's League Mode with the ability to buy and sell players, but even then, you STILL can't even set a player valuation for yourself, or even try and buy a player by bidding how much you want. You still can't even do this, something I could do on PS2 PES.

Sorry for the moan but the last thing I expected with a new engine was for the game to suddenly feel more generic and lifeless, and less realistic. I can't put my finger on it but the way the play pans out just doesn't feel right. Players don't move into position as they should, I"m not seeing any of the arcing runs from PES2013, full-backs rarely overlap, midfielders just pass then stand rigid in position. It's as if the game is designed to force you into triggering player runs yourself, which are horribly designed in themselves (players sprint forward far too fast and for far too long).

Moan over. I don't like the gameplay and there's absolutely nothing to do in the game modes. I preferred even the way players handled in PES2011 over this version, and they've removed some really cool features like the R2 controlled pass. The player rosters are practically from last season, there are barely any stadiums and audio still terrible. Fair play if people love it, I don't begrudge anyone liking this at all, but a shiny lick of paint for me seems to have somehow completely unravelled the gameplay that I think of being traditionally 'PES'. I think Gamespot were right.

Sadly PES14 is over for me for now.

Unplayable and I honestly don't make that statement lightly.

Manual shooting fooked.

Online completely fooked on the ps3 with lag in every game pretty much.

When you can get a game, through balls with off the ball right stick as bad as before/if not worse.

Lag cheats just as bad when you can get a playable match.

I don't know what to say, I am simply gutted. I can even get past the lack of faces, stadiums but there's just too much wrong.

It could be a great game but I don't think this year there is enough room to fix things. The mad thing is I am in the mood for a football game even after this shambles, I can't keep playing PES my house will be smashed up so FIFA it is then. I wish I didn't have to resort to such desperate measures!

Something that I'm not happy with is how easy it is to barge players off the ball. Many games have descended into scrappy playground football because of this. I've also scored and conceded a few goals due to this.

I think it was Wilko that mentioned this earlier and I totally agree. It seems pressure sprinting into players is an easy way to win the ball.

Interesting. Even with the niggles, PES 2014 offline plays a much better game of football than any FIFA game, ever made. Still, I can see how the FIFA bells and whistles can be luring.

I'm scoring a disturbing amount of goals just by running at defenders and winning the ball off them, then I'm through on goal. I just think there's far too much space around the vital areas of the pitch, it just doesn't feel like a PES game. I know that's a contradiction as I didn't want it to feel like the previous games, but I expected it to be more realistic than what's already been released in the past, and I just don't feel like it is.

There's something wrong there, the number of moments in PES2011, 12 and 13 where I had that 'out of my seat' moment in Master League were frequent, but in this, I just don't really care that much when I score. I rarely feel like I earnt it through any kind of footballing skill, just because the AI did something stupid in my favour or that the play just opened up in front of me without even having to force the issue. As a result there has only been one moment in a week of owning the game where I've genuinely felt excited about scoring a goal.

I'm so gutted about this game, I've waited for a shiny new engine ever since they announced it, and to realise after extensive play that it has less realism than their game on an older engine is bizarre.

Then, gameplay aside, to announce they won't even be updating transfers until sometime in November, how do they expect to compete with EA? By that time, EA will even have brought out a fully updated FIFA14 on PS4 and XB1, complete with game modes, players, everything. I know that's not anywhere near the most important thing, but even in the gameplay department, it feels like EA are kind of copying EA's gameplay formula of the last few years, there are aspects to PES2014 that really remind me of FIFA 12 and 13. Which is ironic, because FIFA14 actually seems like a step in the other direction of going back to trying to be more realistic.

I can see where you are coming from, but I just don't get any satisfaction these days with playing Football games against the AI. I don't know why, I just can't motivate myself to play more than 1-2 games at a time offline.

I only really get that "one more game" feeling in human against human matches.

That's the main reason I'm resorting to FIFA, which for me is an extreme measure. Sadly I won't be the only one.

Considering giving it a look as well. My gaming time is getting ever more precious and I'm losing patience with Konami. I think FIFA does at least offer a good package and a feeling of completeness, even if the gameplay isn't quite what I'm after.

Knowing that it will be another 5 or 6 weeks (or more) before PES gets patched is a bit of a blow.

Jamez, what's your opinion on the PES2014 gameplay? I just don't think it 'feels' like PES any more. As for FIFA, I kinda liked the demo, with a spot of tweaking in the right places I think it might be good. Not PES-style good, but a competent game that's at least full of next-gen features (I'll get the PS4 version), decent manager mode, proper teams, nice audio etc. I saw EA's presentation over on the FIFA forum today and it looks very impressive.

I've just lost patience with Konami now. It felt threadbare last year, but this one's got virtually no stadiums, player rosters out of date for most of the time until the next transfer window, deserted game-modes, it just doesn't hold up as a package. And now the gameplay, for me, just isn't 'PES' anymore :(

I only played PES and call of duty for a few years. I gave up on them last year and bought dead island and loved it. Maybe if I had played 15 years of updated zombie games I would have seen faults in it, but I hadn't so smashing a zombies face in with a hammer made of jam seemed original and great.

Then I got Dishonoured and loved that. The answer isn't always that a football game

PES2014 still feels like PES to me, in fact a little too much in some ways. Yes, there is a hint of FIFA in there but I don't think that's a bad thing. FIFA has borrowed heavily from PES so it's about time this was reciprocated.

As I've said before, I am enjoying the gameplay in PES. The tempo is spot-on and when things click it's a great experience. The issues are not gamebreakers for me but let's just say Konami's quality control leaves a lot to be desired.

This is the problem. PES2014 is a clear example of why the 'gameplay is everything' statement doesn't always ring true. I need a good all-round package to truly enjoy the gameplay and this is where PES2014 falls down. Hard.

I can't really get stuck into league mode or tournaments because the lack of stadia and player faces is proving to be a bit of a deal-breaker, as shallow as that sounds.

PES2014 is quite an empty package in many respects.

The answer isn't always that a football game

True. I've got plenty of other games on the go so my gaming life doesn't revolve around PES. It's just a shame that the wait for the next 'complete' PES continues. PES5 was the last one for me.
