PES 2013 Discussion Thread

I have no idea what people want from a game of football, the First-Touch system in this game captures the essence of football like never before. Everything that follows bleeds over from that technical brilliance. Just like real football.

I think the same too. I love it.

Fist touch, controlling the ball, opposition playing well, players making clever runs, the joy of timing tackles perfecting and udnerstanding the player weight and movement is life like when shooting or catching the ball on the volley.
 
Have to echo the sentiments of the last few posts. Can't stop playing it. Playing on zero is class. Individuality is brilliant. For example, i have a player in my Cordoba team called Damian. He's 66 overall, but technically he's perfect for how I play. He turns so sharply and his close control is great. He keeps two 72 rated players out of my team because he's technically better.

Only thing I wish they'd sort out is the animations. The goalkeepers still dive on their bellies. It looks bizarre. They need a whole host of new goalkeeping animations to be honest. They're shocking. And they need to bring back the zoom when you score a goal like they had in pes6.
 
I dont mind the goalkeeper animations in this one I must admit.

this game is just a breath of fresh air though it has that "just one more match" element which the best football games have..

scoring a goal makes me want to jump out of seat, it feels great to score

I Played 18 seasons on ML last season, across all the various patches, and am 4 seasons into my PES13 ML this year, across both the out-of-the-box game and the latest patch.
Konami DO tweak certain things with patches that they don't report in any patch notes, this is fact, maybe not wholesale massive changes but as LT said, subtle parameters here and there, and the reason they don't release any patch notes isn't because they haven't made changes, its because for some reason, they are not aware of how a multi-million dollar professional software development studio should act, ie documenting changes to a products life cycle, in a lot of cases they are quite frankly, incompetent at the basics.

On the flip side, there is almost this 'magical dice' thats hidden in the guts of PES that gets rolled every time you boot up Master League and it determines the kind of session you will have. Now I say this not as fact of course but as in there are variables that make ML play differently from one game to the next, or one session to the next.

I started season 4 over the weekend with 4 back to back hammerings, 4-0,4-1,3-0 and 3-1 - Every team seemed superhuman, unplayable, tackles weren't working, the CPU wonder dribbled past my players, passes were off all the time... It was awful.
I turned the PS3 off and came back a few hours later and had a session where I played the top team, and Spurs in the FA Cup, this time I played flowing football, defended well and won half the games I played and dew a few. The ones I did lose were close games vs better teams.
I didnt remove any patch, I didnt change anything, its just how ML behaves, there is an intentional randomiser coded in that gives a different gamer play experience from session to session, whether this is 'right' or realistic is another thing but its aimed at increasing longevity, and is part of Konami's 'scripting' that is so blatantly evident within the PES series.

I agree with this theory. But there are clear cut differences regardless.

For ex, the easy corner goals i scored in 1.0, cannot be done so easily as in 1.01. Put a man like Ronaldo on the 6 yard line or whatever the distance is in yards, and do the auto corner cross with Di Maria.
You can switch the patch back and forth play the same game or different games. You'll see that you can score way easier in 1.0 (multiple times per game even). This is just 1 example.

I highly doubt Konami would release a patch note saying, we downgraded automatic crosses so you cannot score braindead easy for the sake of balance.
*Although they should release such a statement (not like i did of course) but then again, they don't mention everything you can do on the pitch either in the command list. This has been the case since probably PES 1.
Heck i think you could even use super cancel in ISS64, or maybe it was the long ranged stripe shot (?), i kinda forgot which it was.. but where did it say you could do that?

Someone else, i think it was Keith, said that the patch 'placebo' thing started since PES10.. Well that game changed quite drastically via those patches.. I played that game for 1 week, dropped it.. Then a few months later my friend told me it got patched and 'now' it plays different and i picked it up again.. even played a few small tournaments and started a ML. Just a placebo right?
Just play the game on default and see how rigid it plays, especially on ball control, and first touch (regardless of my opinion of it being rigid or not), then after the patch updates which surely had gameplay changes to it as well, the game had less rigidness in first touches and other small things.

Sometimes you can just feel that it's different at it's core even if every session or game can and most probably will flow differently.

It's kinda like doing this girl with the lights out, and then doing another girl the same way (similar positions etc) would you not notice the difference because the lights are out?
I know who wouldn't notice it... because of the lights that is.

As someone who has spent months editing the game and looked at getting some players perfect to the point I could see a change in 1 in a lot of stats, I can catagorically say that the game changes everytime they release a patch.

Everytime in the last 3 years they have released a patch the game play changes. Sometimes its subtle, others it's less so.

There has been times when it has left me really frustrated as I have spent ages getting the game to play a certain way and then they bring out a patch which does something similar which makes my changes look over the top.
 
i read comments like just like real football, and i have to laugh.
yeah sometimes it is when you probably have the ball. but when you have not got the ball, then that is when the fustration kicks in. time and time again, i see players under ai control just standing still when a loose ball is say a foot away from them or back away from it, or worse, as in an online match i had today. i was man city my opponent none other than real madrid. which people choose 99% of the time. the game is biased towards them thats why.
anyway he hits a long ball forward there are 4 of my defenders and just benzema, but benzema still manages to get the ball because the player i am controlling will not come fully across to get the ball. even tho i am moving the stick in the correct direction, its as tho an invisible rail is blocking him or he is on rails. so despite trying to close him down and benzema getting nearer the penalty area i press tiangle for my gk to come out at which point the player i have been contolling switches to ai controlled and promptly does an about turn and runs up the pitch leaving benzema 1v1 with my gk wtf? things like this happen alot.
this is whats wrong with the game the friggin basics. and they have done nothing about it at all. player id my arse i could not care less about ronaldo running like he does in real life. does vincent kompany all of a sudden ln real life run up the pitch like a madman when van persie is in on goal? no he does not. things like this are the most fustrating thing about the game. you can play all the football build up play you want but to be undone by some totally unrealistic ai at the end of it time and time again is maddening.

Okay I am officially an unassisted shooting player. I hated it at first. Still do infac :LOL: but the rewards and the amount of variation and control is simply phenomenal and its far from easy. Assisted shooing feels like a pisstake at time tbh.

Hmm interesting. It's the one area I haven't delved into too deeply. I too feel that shooting is too easy, not so much in the execution of a shot, but rather the shot accuracy.

Might give full manual all round a go tonight.

And whitch version of the game you are playing pre or post patch?

This is an interesting debate. But check the stats for shots on target vs shots taken and compare it to real life and see if it's accurate. I haven't done so but I see a fair amount of shots miss the target.

Professional footballers...heck, even rank amateurs can hit the target more often than not.

I wish they'd implement an assisted modifier that works inversely to the manual modifier. For example, you can use manual shooting all the time without a button press, but if you have a simple 1 v 1 with the keeper and you need to slot it home, you could press an assisted modifier.

These types of shots have an unnatural element of error if you are using manual shooting - even if you're really good at manual shooting.

I played a ML match tonight, pre-patch. It finished 1-1, a scrappy realistic game taking place in midfield, both teams finishing on 50-50 possession. It was great. Before I manage to save the game, a fuse goes, my Xbox turns off before saving. No big deal, I think, it's just one match that I lost since my last save.

Just as an experiment, for one final time and for arguments sake, I applied the patch again, and replay the exact same match with the exact same teams, same form arrows as my save game was just before that particular match before the power cut.

To put it into context, in my ML so far I was undefeated having not conceded more than one goal per game. My ML default players are crappy but I am pretty good at using the defensive system by now, and can prevent a lot of goals with blocks, and double tapping A.

Remember how I said the post-patch version made my players run off away from the ball and the CPU could just slalom through my team all of a sudden at will?

Well, I applied the patch, replay the same match from my last save point, and turned it off just before half time when I went 4-0 down. The CPU repeatedly rampaged through the middle of the park ghosting past challenges like they weren't there, my defenders just backed off away from their men for three of the goals and the CPU scored their usual cheap 'sweet spot' goal it always managed in my last ML - by scoring a near post header from a cross that my keeper didn't even bother trying to save, even though it floated past him by about a foot.

No difference between the patch and original version? Really..

Post patch: 28 ML matches, 60 goals conceded, 4 wins, 24 losses.
Remove the patch: 12 ML matches, 5 goals conceded, 7 wins, 5 draws, 0 losses.
Re-apply the patch: instantly 4-0 down at half time. Attackers just skip past defenders like they're not there. My defenders, off the ball, just decide randomly to walk in the opposite direction as the ball 10 yards out from their own goal.

In short, pre-patch feels fair, tackles work, the CPU actually needs to have a decent dribbler on the ball to be able to take you on and beat you. CPU patiently passes the ball around.

Post-patch, the CPU relentlessly hounds you off the ball, bombs forward as soon as it wins the ball back, frequently skips over challenges and is absolutely laser-accurate with shooting even though the div 2 teams have the worst players in the game. Again, I do emphasise that his isn't noticeable to me unless I'm playing with the ML defaults, but with the worst players in the game I think it shows up what they've tweaked under the hood like a magnifying glass.

I had a good run of games tonight pre-patch, within one half of adding the patch in the same session I turned it off in disgust. Boosting, boosting, boosting.

You're assuming two games will play out exactly the same way. Go back and play that match again with the same form arrows and if you don't go 4-0 down at half time, what will you say? lol.

I know where he is coming from though. I did the same thing last year going back and fourth between patches trying to find satisfaction with product. Really though it just comes down to Konami's inability to nail the gameplay first time round with retail release, which has us all fiddling around with the damn game. No doubt pes 2013 plays a good game footy at it's core, even with the extremely unwhelming other aspects of the game.

I do hope Suppertalk finds solice soon though or else soon he will known as crazy patch man.

I'm not assuming that both games will play out the same way. Of course they won't.

I just thought it was an interesting 'coincidence'. I play near on a complete ML season with the patch, there's boosting all over the place, CPU players dribbling like Messi all over the place, the CPU playing super direct, and I lose every game 4 or 5-0 for a complete season.

Take off the patch for 12 games and see no boosting whatsoever, CPU can't dribble like Messi because the Div2 players, well, aren't Messi. I don't lose once in those 12 matches and don't concede more that one goal a game.

Whack the pach back on, the CPU starts instantly dribbling like Messi again and playing ultra direct, and instantly I'm 4-0 down at half time.

Is it really that hard to see the CPU behaves differently with the patch? How many games in a row do I need to play, seeing consistently the exact same behaviour before I you'd claim it's not just a game panning out differently? 100? 200?

I'm fine with the game, as it is out of the box it's great. The patch just ramped up the CPU's dribbling ability and made them more lethal in front of goal. The patch makes it very much like PES2012 in that respect.

I think Konami listened to complaints from PES2012 about how tough the game could be, factored that into PES2013 and did a mini u-turn with the patch as they probably felt the CPU was a tiny bit too easy. And I can clearly see that from one version to the other.

Hardly 'crazy' is it.

I was just saying really for arguments sake, I got shot down for my opinion on the patch before and thought is have a go with the patch just out of interest.

Thankfully other people like yourself and Chimps can actually see they altered the difficulty with the patch. There are lots of people all over the internet claiming the CPU dribbles like crazy since the patch, yet over on here I'm being branded as some irrational lunatic for thinking they've changed something in a videogame patch. I mean FFS.

I'm currently playing Post-Patch, although I will be removing it on my next session out of total curiosity.

I fancy giving it a go good Pre-Patch after reading LT's comments. It's not that I'm unhappy with Post-Patch, but if I'm honest, there is a slight loss of the organic feel I felt in the demo. What I mean by that is a natural freedom of the ball, with less of a bias to the CPU.

After playing a full season in ML, and what I know already, I'm pretty certain any changes that have been made (and I do subscribe to the belief of subtle gameplay tweaks from patch to patch), that I'd be able to notice them quite easily after extended play.

The only thing I was initially concerned about, (which has now been answered by LT), is whether my current ML save would be still compatible after I remove the 1.01. I remember I couldn't access the Brasilian ML I had trailed after downloading 1.01 and the Datapacks. I was getting the error message 'Wrong Version'. I now believe that must have been down to the Datapacks rather than 1.01.

I'm taking my son to see Middlesbrough v Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, so hopefully we will get some time to give this 1.00 version play-time after that. :)

Hahaha! I wasn't having a go either and I don't think you are a raving lunatic! Although I just had this image in my head of you debating it with yourself whilst keeping some kind of patch note diary, only joking!
I was just stating that I know how you feel. If I'm honest I have noticed some differences pre/post patch. Mainly pre patch I had more midfield battles on superstar and post patch I did notice that cpu were more direct in their approach. But I had this problem last and it did my head in going around in circles. This year I can't be bothered to let it bother me, other than that I'm finally able to enjoy ML campaign pre-patch!

I think the difference is far more noticeable the worse your team is. I think the reason for that is that on Superstar, the post-patch game introduces more boosting, stats are less relevant because Konami, I think, felt the game needed toughening up slightly. Hence the faster, more direct CPU and boosting of attacking play in favour of CPU. This might not be so noticeable with better teams because you'd expect higher rated players on Superstar to be able to beat you at will a lot more than with a Div 2 team.

I think with my ML default team, there is dodgy combination with the patch applied in that my players are awful, their tackling is terrible in defence, and the patch seems to boost all teams regardless of their stats. Playing against 60-rated strikers in ML shouldn't be ending with every player planting his shot against you straight into the top corner. Take the patch off, and it instantly feels like the players at the lower end of the scale are more evenly matched, and that the CPU is actually taking stats into account. I think this is far less so with the patch installed because of the boosting.

Either way, I thought it was interesting as a little experiment, but I'm gonna leave it at that, and carry on without the patch.
 
Imho, these are the biggest problems with PES 2013:

1. Ball-physics: The ball doesn't really feel free and like an independent entity. Like for example when dribbling, it feels like the ball is on strings and when running with the ball it's all precalculated how the ball gets off the foot of the player (at least it’s better than in PES 2012). Dynamic and unpredictability is missing. In real life football players have to fight a bit to keep the ball under control while running or changing direction. That's missing here, as it feels automated.
And the ball's energy/velocity/potential seems not to be transferred from one state to the next, like from passing to shooting.
The last problem with the ball-physics is regarding reflections/deflections, here again the trajectory seems not to be calculated according to realistic physics, instead the ball works in the service of certain scripts that decide who should receive the ball.

2. Control of players is not precise and immediate enough: Imagine you have the ball and a defender tries a tackle too early or he rushes in too fast and you see the opportunity to quickly change the position of the ball to let him rush into empty space and to leave him behind or to simply lift the ball a little to make it go over his defending leg or to lead him into one direction until he thinks he knows what you want to do and then to surprisingly and swiftly change into an unexpected direction and/or with unexpected pace.
The reaction of the players towards the user-input is a bit too indirect and too limited in possibilities and the reaction of the CPU is too robotic (as it often reads the input and reacts to it before the visual animation happens).

3. Pressure is not used realistically: In real life pressure in the first third of the pitch is loose or not existent (except if the team is choosing to use high pressing), but in the midfield pressure is very intense, so that most of the play happens in the midfield, while it loosens up a bit in the last third because no one wants to grant a close freekick and the pressure gets even more loose in the penalty-area as no one wants to grant easy penalties. Instead of using tacklings in the last third of the pitch, especially in the penalty area, the defense tries to block pass/shooting-angles and uses the offside-trap.
In the game pressure gets even more extreme in the penalty-areas with the CPU tackling like crazy. Of course this leads to many fouls but the referee closes his eyes when the CPU is fouling in the penalty-area.

4. Goalkeeper parries too much into the feet of the opponent’s strikers. This happens in real life too, though to a smaller extent. But downright awful it becomes when close-by-defenders don’t react to the loose ball that got parried from the goalkeeper and even if timely switched on can’t be controlled to go to the ball and clear it eventhough they are nearer to the ball than the opponent’s strikers.

5. No real time stamina/fatigue-system: This is interconnected with the pressure. There is no price-tag to it, so it can be abused, and is being abused by the CPU. You see for example the CPU’s striker be it Rooney or whoever running from one player to the next pressuring the whole width of the pitch without losing steam.

6. Clipping-issues: Feets going through other feets, the ball ghosting through legs or the goalkeeper’s body…

7. CPU’s off-the-ball-movements are drastically different from your own player’s off-the-ball-movements. The CPU’s players can make interesting and well timed runs, weaving in and out of my defense, keeping on-side… but my own player’s movements seem restricted, they often run too early into offside or they try their best to stick with the CPU’s defenders, but not for the purpose to outwit them in the nick of time, they remain apathic. In reallife when a midfielder with the ball starts an attack and starts a run, other players start to run, too, trying to offer options or as decoy, but in the game most of the time the other players don’t try to synch with my movement.

8. Zero-bar-passing is not the same as L2-manual-passing, it’s assisted and often the assistance chooses the wrong recipient for the pass and changes the ball’s trajectory accordingly. The phenomenon shows itself most prominently during the offense in the last third of the pitch. To circumvent the problem I press L2 in the last third of the pitch, but sometimes I forget to press it as it is a bit cumbersome to do so…

9. Catch-up-gamedesign: It works for both humans and CPU, defenders can develop unbelievable speeds when trying to catchup, even against players like Ronaldo that in reallife would never be catched up to once left behind. Like I said it works also for us humans, but only when the cursor is not on the player: When the cursor is on the player and I try to run behind an opponent's striker, the speed is realistic, I have difficulties to catch up against fast strikers. But when I deselect the cursor on my defender, he suddenly catches up easily.
 
Okay Supertalk isn't on drugs. I knew what the changes were (for me anywat) but I'll highlight my findings with regards to pre and post patch.

I play on Superstar, one bar assist.

Post patch, the game speed and pass speed is amped up on 0 game speed. Games are generally end to end Premier League style games with players feeling more fluid, passing more laser guided and quicker, and general player movements more recognisable.

When I switched from 1.00 to 1.01 I initially welcomed the changes, because the gameplay seemed slicker and I was enjoying it more because the game seemed more fun.

Going back to 1.00 today games played at a more real life pace. Passing felt slower (which I like) and the ball seemed to bobble/have more life to it. The CPU played counter at times, but had more variety in build up play, and pace of attack I felt. The CPU pressure is higher in 1.00 I felt, in that they are quicker to close down space. Also striker movement in 1.00 isn't great whereas in 1.01 I feel the striker is always looking to get behind the CPU line.

CPU through balls in 1.00 feels more frustrating too, whilst they attempt less through balls the one they hit sometimes leaves the defender just running alongside it rather than sticking out a leg like in 1.01.

Counter attacking in 1.00 becomes a little painful as player movement is lower.

So, it's a mixed bag really. I used 1.00 for weeks and then 1.01, and now I'm back trying 1.00,

My verdict is that generally, I now feel that 1.00 mirrors football more in terms of the way the ball behaves, the way the CPU looks to build up, the way I'm forced to go back and across sometimes (due to increased CPU pressure mind), and the general midfield scrap. It does now seem more random, in a good way, with 1.00. Player ID is perhaps more pronounced in 1.00 than in 1.01 too. Certainly I love how the ball feels and behaves in 1.00, with regards to my passing and shooting and the CPU's, and general challenges etc.

The one glaring trade off I feel is that moves often break down as the striker seems to move less, so do team mates in general. Perhaps more realistically I may add. In 1.01, there seemed a hive of activity in terms of attacking with players rushing into space all the time, which meant a counter fest. In 1.00, I have to start and sometimes re-start moves and keep the ball more.

Overall I feel, like before, that 1.00 on Superstar is harder. The CPU are smarter in cutting down space and passing lanes which can leave the user feeling a little frustrated that moves aren't free flowing all the time. But hey, that's football, and although there are a few things that piss me off with 1.00, I think I'll run with it over 1.01 just for the whole football experience in midfield and forsake a little attacking and counter attacking ease.

To do this cheat you have two OPTIONS:

1.
While you are playing a match and obviously losing, simply go to your PC OR LAPTOP, open up your web browser and type in WWW.SPEEDTEST.NET, wait for the page to load. Once loaded, click on ‘BEGIN TEST’. That’s it! Easy right?

After 3-5 minutes of in match time (not real time!) the game will disconnect and the following message will occur:

“match abandoned because connection significantly worsened”
Both players will receive 0 points and no money. The match basically never happened.
Very rarely you may need to press ‘BEGIN TEST’ 2-3 times. You don’t need to pause the game.

2.
If you have an IPHONE or any ANDROID device, simply go to the applestore or google play store and you can download the speedtest.net APPLICATION(APP). Make sure you are connected to your router VIA WIFI only. Once you have the app on your phone you can do the same thing as option 1, the advantage is that you don’t have to move from your bed or sofa.

Why am I doing this?

Since Konami have not done anything about cheaters using this cheat for the past 4 years, I have taken it upon myself to make sure that most people will know this cheat, hence most matches in PES2013 online will not finish. Konami may then start to take Notice.

If you have an IPHONE or any ANDROID device, simply go to the applestore or google play store and you can download the speedtest.net APPLICATION(APP). Make sure you are connected to your router VIA WIFI only. Once you have the app on your phone you can do the same thing as option 1, the advantage is that you don’t have to move from your bed or sofa.

Why am I doing this?

Since Konami have not done anything about cheaters using this cheat for the past 4 years, I have taken it upon myself to make sure that most people will know this cheat, hence most matches in PES2013 online will not finish. Konami may then start to take Notice.

Wow !! What a crazy logic. I would assume it's bad enough for people playing on with the cheating, let alone making the cheat wide-spread knowledge.

I can see his point though - for years people have been able to use various methods to throttle their connections to the point where the entire match is voided, even if it's been completely lag free for 85 minutes and you're 3-0 up.

If the majority of players start doing it then you would have thought Konami would have to take action, either in a patch or for PES 2014.
