PES 2011 Discussion thread

Well I thought it might have been a placebo effect and so it's proven to be....

Just played tonight and the same old problems resurface after a few games. Both of this year's titles are so fucked up beyond comprehension that I'm giving up on both for this year.

How is it possible, on BOTH PES and FIFA, for me to be able to comfortably win against the top teams yet struggle in the most dire, boring matches possible against the weaker teams? Both titles are massively unbalanced.

I just played as Spurs vs Toulouse, and the AI set out an utterly, utterly ridiculous formation after just a few minutes whereby I paused the game, with Modric on the ball on the halfway line, and could see there were no AI players within 30 yards of him. The AI had, including the keeper, TEN players all standing in a line across the penalty area. TEN. After 10 minutes of play. The game was impossible. No Spurs player could seem to control the ball without taking loads of slow touches, even using R2, and the ball just appeared to magnetically switch over to the AI player's foot whenever he got near my man with the ball. Surprise surprise I conceded a soft goal from a corner, and that was that. If you work the ball into the AI's final third, you'd literally be hounded out by a wall of 10 players against 3 or 4 attackers at most, and non of whom make any decent runs. All you can do is make them do a forward run when you pass the ball, which just results in them running in a straight line like a robot until they're in an offside position. The AI is a joke.

Previously, I somehow got tonked 4-1 by Roda. I had all the possession, the AI sat ridiculously deep, 4 breakaways, 4 goals. Bottom line is when the AI decides it's going to be 'tough', it seems to be able to make even the weakest teams be able to intercept almost any pass, it just takes the ball off you whether you're shielding it or not, it's a joke. I can't believe it's 2011 and the situation with football and videogames is that only two companies have a total monopoly on the sport, and both are somehow fucking up their own franchises with every year.

So, erm, no, the patch really doesn't make a difference. My games last night were enjoyable, my games tonight were less fun than having a tooth pulled out. I couldn't manufacture a single shot at goal against a 10 man defence who steamrollered into tackles, hounded you on the ball with up to FOUR players, and seemed to make your much better rated players have worse control.

Both games this year really are total bollocks. If you compare how other genres have progressed in the last 10 years, it's astonishing how much of a mess these two companies are making of representing the sport. There are so many better games out there that I"m not going to give these two my money any more until someone produces something far, far better.

Compare a FPS from 10 years ago with the likes of Killzone 3 or Bad Company 2. Compare other sports titles, like 2K's NBA2K series or Top Spin etc. Or look at how racing games have evolved from basic racers to the likes of Gran Turismo 5. Compare how platform games have evolved into the likes of Drake's Fortune 2 and Little Big Planet.

Most of these games now come with full 3D support, complex online modes without massive exploits, atmosphere, top graphics, better and improving AI, tweaks to controls, more options, even support for PS Move or Kinect. Yet, fans of PES and FIFA are still asking for basic details like shirts getting dirty, proper animations, more choice of nets, stadiums, kit options, weather, cursors that don't take on a life of their own, keepers that actually try to save shots, or better audio than the awful mess PES turns out year after year, and some sense of atmosphere. FIFA can't even get the crowds chanting for the right teams (fancy playing as Arsenal and having your fans chant "we love you Fulham"?), whereas PES sounds empty and repetitive. And most importantly, both games still can't develop any kind of decent defensive AI that doesn't rule by making it's defenders into bionic supermen. And it can't do anything other than sit back, artificially restrict you from attacking, then hit you on the break with the same types of goals over and over again. But even graphically speaking, FIFA can't seem to escape making all the game's players look like glazed zombies, whereas PES just can't seem to stop making games now where players run in some bizarre robotic way.

Both games still use the same cheap AI routines to stop you winning that games used well over 10 years ago. Sure, the games now are technically 'better', but I don't remember ever being so dissatisfied with football games back then, nor do I experience any real problems with any other game I own on current gen hardware. It's as if both companies have introduces a whole load of new stuff over the recent years, but it gets overpowered by the AI routines recycled from years ago. Both are technically more sophisticated than before, yet, somehow, both of these football games absolutely drive me up the wall sometimes. They're just not fun anymore. The same can't be said for the rest of the industry right now.

EA have recently all but admitted the game is aimed towards the casual, throwaway market, which you'd kind of expect, whereas I've never understood how Konami have never been able to produce a single PES game that didn't include a new feature by unnecessarily taking out other cool, favourite, features. They don't even appear to be getting anywhere near making the ball move in a realistic way these days. Someone like 2K needs to do for football games what they've done for other sports titles, and give these two companies a massive kick up the arse. Sigh. Rant over.

Good thing the placebo effect is still going on for me

:P

This game has a bizarre effect where in the short term it seems amazing. Leave the game for a few weeks, go back to it and it seems even better. But I then find that just a few matches in, and I get increasingly annoyed with a whole ton of stuff. Same with FIFA11.

I'm pretty sure a game should get better the more you play it, not the other way around.

We should show a little respect and stop squabbling about unimportant stuff like games. Look at what's happening in Japan and put things in perspective, that's all.

I sympathise with the devs regarding the AI in football game. They have to programme 21 AI players including those on your team and those you're playing against (the only one that doesn't need it is the player you're controlling). I don't think there's been much advancement in the past 5-10 years but then again there's not been such great advancement in the games that LTFC listed either. CPU cars in GT5 suck, enemies in uncharted shoot wildly, none of them are really miles better than games from 5-10 years ago. Everything else has though and LTFC is right in saying that both football games, but especially PES, have been poor in this area.

The thing about team based sports games especially is that it is always going to be difficult to programme AI but i can't deny that PES & FIFA feel quite like the AI hasn't advanced that much at all, it may have even gone backwards in PES, but i don't think it can really get that great with this gen's technology unless they've struggled for no real reason but lack of ability/knowledge (a bit of a blanket statement because i'm just assuming). I think PES has potentially bigger issues to worry about anyway as highlighted a lot in those videos and what LTFC listed in his posts (i completely get the placebo feeling thing, when you don't play for a while it feels great at first till you realise why that feeling won't last). If these things were rectified i don't think we'd have such an issue with the AI. Afterall the AI isn't that great in PES3/5/6 but it was still fun because of other advancements.

Anyway good luck Nippon with the more important things beyond videogames.

Totally agree that we should put things in perspective, I didn't really know much about the earthquake until I got home from work today. Horrific.

But for all the moaning/talking about videogames, I for one never treat games or other entertainment as anything other than trivial, of course. There are far more things in life that are massively more important.

I hope that Japan will manage to somehow recover from this. It's just awful.

Just for reference, the Data Pack is now available on PS3, version 7.0

- Winter transfers
- A couple of new kits
- 10 new pairs of boots

Obviously as before, chomp it up via the Extra Content menu.

hello guys
i have a question
when playing vs the cpu
and in "one on one" situation the attacking AI player who has the ball sometimes lift the ball very slightly above the goal keeper then the ball runs smoothly towards the goal net and "GOAL" lol
i tried shooting while pressing L1 and also tried shooting with R2 but the result wasn't like what's made by the AI
simply is is possible to mimic that act done by the cpu on "one on one" situation and how ?
despite i share in making patching and pes editing but i find myself noob lol when it comes to feints and playing skills in general
thanks in advance

I think you mean a little chip over the keeper...not really high, just a little bit over the keeper if the keeper is on the ground? I think after you press shoot you press the sprint button and it lifts it a little bit. Try it in practice mode. I think that's what you're after?

thanks CalcioCalabrese for the answer
in fact that's really what i mean , the little bit chip over the keeper , i'll try that in training mode , i hope i can do it
thanks again
cheers

90% ML game at night is a gamekiller. ML is my main game mode and i truly hate night games, they look dull and there is a total lack of depth of field.

I wish we had the option to decide ourselves.

I hate when I try to remember these things when explaining them. Everything happens instinctively when youy play PES religiously lol.
If I'm not mistaken you need to not have sprinted onto the ball. Then shoot and quickly tap the L1 button and include the R2 controlled shot. It does a neat little dink over the keeper.

i tried what CalcioCalabrese adviced and did it
in fact this the R2 controlled shot as u said , player not sprinting , shot what ever the power even full power then sprint button
strangely that was done in pes 2010 using R2 but now it's done by R1 , i think that's the cause of the confusion i faced

PES 2011 is my first PES game so I didnt have to re-learn things from previous games. All I did was re-map my buttons to something like FIFA, then making small changes. Now its very comfortable for me.

I have done a couple of those little dinks where I'm sprinting onto the end of a pass and the keeper is rushing out and it flicks over him and dribbles slowly into the goal. When I put a video up soon of my MLO goals you can see it.

I uploaded a video in HD from my phone, which looks good on the phone and I checked it yesterday on full screen on here and youtube's compression makes it look rather rough! Or maybe the phone's HD is not as good as I thought.

i assume the DLC is exactly as stated on the tin? new kits, new boots and roster updates?
konami havent sneakily squeezed in anything that ramps the CPU pressure up by another million percent or anything dodgy!?

enjoying my ML campaign at the moment so hesitant to update.

You can just update and theres an option that will pop up wether you want to add the roster update or not or just the kit update and boots... so it wont affect your ML and just had new boots to player instead.

Konami ruined something for me...you cant edit the appearance of a created player in ML. Even if you edit it wont be in affect in your ML but it will be if the player is a base player...careless from konami...

Not really ... it would be careless from Konami if they ignored the fact that CREATED players can easily be DELETED ingame, unlike base players.

Edit mode players always had "special" treatment. Their data is saved completely into ML save file, appearances including, because it would be highly unsafe to reference them simply by ID, as base players are referenced.

If you want new appearances of edited players to kick in, create new ML.

What kind of havoc could you possibly get in your ML save if Konami were really careless and gave deletable players same treatment as base players?

I'm watch the situation in Tokyo every minut, and things are not good! Radiation is 300 times up above the limits, mass evacuate people from the city, Japan does not know what to do, seek help from Europe and the other world. I think it will be a miracle if we have PES 2012 this year after all the disasters that struck the game is ridiculous to make a game in these conditions ... I pray for the people of Japan ...
