PES 2011 Discussion thread

Like the review, its a 7 for me whilst i'd rate fifa at 8.5. So theres a good, playable game there, let down with some issues that to me give the impression your not always in control, but i can see how some people would prefer this to Fifa.

I dont want to start a football title war here, but no chance FIFA has 1.5 more to this PES. Not at all. Unless you are giving 2 points for licenses and cosmetc stuff not related to gameplay. I know it is down to personal preferences but FIFA 11 this year has to be one of the most disappointing titles (little to zero evolution from 10, why bother if it is almost the same?) when PES 11 has returned to form, with flaws as usual, but with most of the basics in place. FIFA still needs the basics right... starting with ball physics...

This years non-biased reviews should have a difference of .5 up or down, the race is pretty tight...

Just lost a match due to a 90th minute defender switching error. Really wound me up. Aha.

They played a diagonal through ball. The AI seemed to make sure all my defenders move out of the way of it, while not really allowing me to select the one defender who was positioned to stop it. So as a last ditch attempt to stop the goal i signal for my keeper to come out and narrow the angle. He does, but in a straight line, leaving an open net for their striker to tap the ball into.

I've been playing most of the day and i'm seeing more and more annoying little problems that are stopping me from really appreciating the game. At the minute i like it, but i don't like it as much as i thought i would after playing the demo for hours on end.

At the minute my main gripes are....

♦ Player switching is woeful which means at times it's impossible to try and defend Ai through passes

♦ Unresponsiveness of some players. Seems off from the demo. Had a few instances where the Ai have cleared upfield and i've gone to control the ball with a defender who decides to carry on running which knocks the ball out for a throw in, despite me repeatedly trying to change direction or pass the ball. Also conceded a few own goals because of this same problem

♦ Shooting is bugging me a little. At times it's great, other times it looks terrible. The 'controlled' shot looks poor because you action it after the power gauge is shown. This leads to the animations needing to change. The ball still doesn't have much of a noticeable arc on, and it seems random as to whether the ball heads towards goal at the intended speed or whether it will trickle through to the keeper.

So close yet so far. I feel bad for pointing out some flaws because i've invested so much time in praising the game. It's not like Fifa is a viable alternative with it being...erm...garbage. I just wish some of the obvious flaws could be ironed out. Grrr.

I don't know why some seem to complain about lack of space for shooting from distance. I seem to get in shots from distance all the time (playing on top player), scoring quite a few as well. Try going into team style and into "team mate response" or whatever it is called, and take it from medium to "narrow", then you'll get a lot more players running around you, getting into space or creating space for you.

My biggest gripe with the gameplay so far is the switch player system, which really sucks at times, and especially at times when it shouldn't. Also the goalkeeper animations are usually pretty shit, yes. AND, my biggest atmosphere-wise gripe, why are so many of the damn stadiums so far off the pitch? Looks really stupid when playing as say Liverpool, and the stands at Anfield are many metres behind the goal, lacks a lot of authentic feeling to it.

I'm going to look into this, from what i've seen online, just trying to exploit your opponent's weaknesses gives you space! I mean, i can see where your coming from because most matches are very crowded when using default tactics but play around with them and see if you can actually get that space you want!

Yeh i agree playing wide spacious tactics makes the game feel a lot better and less congested.

I was going to post about how some teams just aren't fun to play with whilst others are regardless of ability. I think it's down to tactics. For instance i played 2 matches as Chelsea and had the most drab time with them (won one and drew the other). There was no point in Malouda or Anelka on the wings because i simply couldn't create any space for them to do anything like they would in real life. My midfield 3 felt very congested too so the lack of ability to create space came to fruition.

In comparison i just played a match with Arsenal and after editing their tactics to one i felt was more realistic the game felt so much better. Way less congested and i had space to do things. To be honest i can't really account for why a 433 formation (chelsea) would be that different from 451 (arsenal). Both teams had 3 midfielders but the Arsenal match had way less congestion in the middle of the pitch. Perhaps Arsenal's continental style football suits this game way more than a more physical approach. They're the only Prem team i've played with and thought that they played decently on the game. Pro Evo has never tended to favour the Premiership's overly physical play.

I still think it's only half the solution though because it is hard to create space with an individual player's dribbling ability. You basically have to pass into space and run with a player rather than have your player beat a man and create his own.

I not giving a indepth review but to sum things up for me.

Anything between a 7-9/10 suits this game for me.

7 if the annoyances get on your nerves, 9 if they don't, I'm at about 8.85 something

Northzzz, still experimenting with the tactics? Remember you players make a huge difference so don't go using Juventus expecting them to play with width with their formation  (until the transfer update which will include Krasic)

Had a few quick matches online just now. There was one match where I chose Internacional and they chose Barcelona! There were 2 of them against me, and I managed to draw 2-2. Haha. One of the goals was pretty nice.

Another match I had against AlexRed, not sure if he's here, but he's really a great sporting guy, because he got 2 red cards and he continued playing. The red cards were because he slid the man without the ball, probably because of the lag or something. But it was a good game beat him 3-1, after he almost threatened to make a comeback.

Pretty fun experience, though the lag is quite noticeable. I'm from Singapore, so pretty much anyone in Europe or further would be laggy. Maybe someone from Australia might be less laggy.

P.S Using the PC version btw.

Been playing the Winning Eleven demo now for about 3 weeks prefer it to the UK demo. Those who have the PS3 version are you finding the finished product to be on a par better or worse than the Japanese demo? Against the computer not interested in how it plays online yet.

funny thing is all the south american teams i made in pes 2010 have come over stats and all so ive now 2 corinthians, banfield palmeiras and estudiantes. all of the players now can be used in the ML im chuffed

In what league where they mate? Seems like teams I've made in the fake league last year, championship, won't come over.

I think i've found the key to enjoying this game. The Stade Louis II.

It seems much bigger than other pitches and as long as you play an expansive formation/tactic then you rarely have to encounter congestion.

Other stadiums may well be good too....

there were in other league A over the other unlicenced european teams that konami must have left from pes 2010 to pes 2011

the optionfile is coming along pretty quickly, ive done all kit s for all teams bar 22 which il get round to tonight. id say it could be ready for chimps by next weekend,im not touching the players until after the konami update ,if they fuck it up again with defaulting everythimg il quit

That is true. You can see the difference in shooting in the training mode when it's 11 of you v the GK. Finesse shooting in the training mode shows how good it can be.

It does highlight one flaw with the game in that it's really hard to create space for yourself for those shots though. Close control dribbling gets you out of tight situations but it hardly creates space. That's about the only option so far i can see in the game. There's no push the ball system like in PES 5 to create space and push it past a defender whilst being able to ho.....bla, bla, bla.

My two cents anyway.

Sorry dude. I needed to chop off part off your post as you are talking utter ass!

Please do me a favour and WORK the space don't expect the AI to open space for you or allow your players through on goal and give up when you have got through the gap.

I may be way off here as I am still playing demos on the PS3 and PC at the moment. But I create enough space for shots and 1-on-1s.

If you have the ability you can shoot from a crowded area low on the ground and through a players legs with pace and swerve. For you not to be able to do something and call it a flaw on the game is juvenile....go practice more and think football not videogame. Just my 2 cents....

I don't know if you read my follow ups but i stated how i realise how space is created through passing but still maintain you can't create that much space by beating a man with an individual player.

Beating a side back clearly with a winger on the wing is something i've yet to see happen. I'm talking about receiving the ball, slowing down and then pushing it past the sideback with clear distance emerging between the two. That type of space creation still eludes me.

Has anyone worked out how to transfer internationals into club teams yet?

I've noticed when you search players in ML, it doesn't show the internationals, only club players. T o me, this means the doubles and players with false names don't really matter, as they don't show up.

Go to Transfer, go to the team you want to add the national team player to, click add, then press the square button and wack the player name in the search, and add him, simple as that, don't have to scroll through pages of players :)

Excuse me, but seriously, just how much more realism and variation can you ask for. Jeez, talk about mimicing the game I love. Incredible. If you own a football brain the opportunities are staggering.

Yeah, I can only echo the complaints about player switching. It's definitely my main gripe too.

Other than that I'm enjoying it. The freedom you get is why I am playing this more than FIFA.

Not really played this much, but got the WENB patch and had a few proper games via a CL with Real Madrid, then I started MLO

Belgian Raspberry Beer and MLO has been a winning formula for me tonight!

Just had 2 matches, won both, the first capped off with a beauty 25 yard free-kick from one of the default squad.

This is possibly the best mode in a football game ever. It was just a bit laggy as both opponants were Iberian.

In fact its been a great day all round since I discovered ice-cream Caramacs earlier in the supermarket. :SMUG:

Well 3 nights in and I am finished with the online side of the game, very dissapointing as I was really looking forward to it.
Every match I have had is laggy, there is no teleporting but the game has a very heavy feel to it and it plays as iff there is a massive frame rate problem, its just crap. However even if this problem was not there I would still be done with it, I swear I am playing FIFA10 at times. Get the ball in midfield pass it around, get rushed by pressure whores and loose the ball. Play the ball into he striker, get rushed by pressure whores and lose the bal. Build up an attack, in the final third looking for an opening, get rushed by pressure whores and loose the ball. I try to dribble or pass around them but my players are soo poor and the lag is soo bad that it just does not work.

I am glad to see that some of you are not having these issues, it must be very enjoyable. Hopefully I can get an OF, start a ML and that will keep me going but at the moment I kinda wish I never bought the game.

Loving the game. It's pure class, not been addicted to a footy game like this in around 5 years.

Thinking of knocking that WENB Option File on tonight (BLES-20), but I'm totally confused over what will be overwritten by the Konami DLC this Tuesday. The Option File updates kits, emblems and team names. The DLC seemingly updates transfers and whatever else. If I install the OF tonight, will the DLC discard the kit & emblem configurations meaning I'd have to assign them all again manually?

Cheers

I just read your follow up post...trust me this game(demo) is deep it requires alot of patience.

Torres and Gerrard are uter trash in this game. Neither have any pace. Playing Helsinki (yes that kak side) and Gerrard cant get away from any of their players.

Torres shoot like an amateur too. kuyt and Poulson are far more effective players.

this game is up and down for me.
