Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

very good +/-, chris. couldn't say it any better.
the worst thing for me is, the gameplay doesn't catch me anymore. It's no fun playing games with 8:5 scorelines. crackers can be done far too easily.
I've scored 2 great goals in my very first match. In the good times I had to do much more work to score such great goals (and there have been realistic scorelines)

The pitch and lighting effects are looking stunning, but the player animations are horrible. They should have slowed them down too, because in replays they are looking ok, at least.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

I got that itch yesterday and I got the game but I'll be trading it in for Mirrors Edge next month.

When there is a new and good PES game the first time you play it it feels weird but the more you play the more it grows on you and you notice little things here and there and you start to love it more and more. I've played a lot of games and I'm really, really struggling to like this game,

Basic things like pressing the opposition and trying to tackle without pressing the circle button is broken. A lot of the problems have already been mentioned but the worst one for me is moving the R2 skills to the fucking d pad, what a stupid idea! Coupled with the many bad aspects of the gameplay it has completely ruined the gameplay for me.

There are times when I'm on the attack and I'll be in the final third of the pitch and then suddenly Woodgate appears at the edge of the box as if he is playing AM, WTF!

I want to love it but the truth hurts and this game sucks.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

I've been hammering it last 24 hrs and my thumbs are killing me!

Love it to bits, especially BAL mode.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

Hi, whenever i try to log in on PES 2009 it says that its testing the network environment, but then it comes up with an error. it says i should try to turn on port forwarding in network settings and also some other stuff, but i don't know how to do any of this. can anyone help?

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

Added the chants (i posted the link a few posts up) into my game last night and they really make a difference.

Though some of them are a little rough in places so the looping nature of them really stands out. The chelsea one for example has a part where the fans shout CHELSEA a few times really loudly and the liverpool one has a Gerrard chant that stands out so by the 3rd time you hear it you know when the loops kicked in.

The rest seem fine - though I was hoping the england chant file would have the band playing but its just random chanting.

Does anyone know if their is a limit to the length of the mp3 chants?

Sorry - i could have posted the actual link to the file but i wasn't sure if that was against any rules.

It's a decent enough file until the official WE Blog file comes at the end of the week. I'm just after some more decent chant packs now.
--

Found this bit of help info for people adding music to their game;

Be Warned:

1. When naming the Playlist on the PS3 XMB make sure there are no gaps before or after KONAMI_PES (pressing start on the dual shock always adds a blank space (why Sony, why?)

2. Make sure you add more than 10 songs to KONAMI_PES playlist.
My first attempt I added under 10 songs to the playlist and the PES 2009 MP3 Library came up a big fat EMPTY!

3. A lot of my MP3s refused to play in the PES 2009 MP3 Library? Still have no idea why. I just deleted them from the playlist & replaced them with ones PES 2009 recognised. Had to quit the game to do it. I thought in game XMB was implimented to avoid this!

Update

I've now got all the tracks that wouldn't play to work!

Removed all the mp3 tags from the song except for Song Title, Artist & Album.

Removed all hypens & punctuation from mp3 tag.
example Artist: T-Pain = Artist: TPain
example Artist: Ciara Feat. Chris Brown = Ciara Feat Chris Brown

after playing 4 days, i already made a conclusion that im going for the PS2 version of PES2009:) simply becouse it never disapoints, and i just heard it also has a Be a legend mode.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

I've played quite a few games on PES 09 now, about 20 in all modes. Here's my views on it.

Gameplay:
Can anyone tell me anything that's better about the gameplay in this than PES5 (or any of the PS2 PES games)? I am struggling to see a single thing which they have improved upon in terms of gameplay.
The passing system is as scripted and basic as always, with almost every pass being perfectly aimed and weighted, with you having no control over it at all.
If I see a player free on the far side of the pitch and want to play it ahead of them, I can't, unless I am fortunate enough for the game to "lock on" to them and play it to them, or have the direction I want to play the ball in in one of the 8 directions available for manual passing - that's stupid.
The shooting is random - you can be in space with nobody around you and just smash it over the bar or pull it miles wide for no reason, even with a world class player. It would be understandable if I was shooting with a centre back or a bad player, but not with a world class player renowned for his shooting ability.
One thing that's remained from PES 08 is the ease of drifting by everyone with a good/quick player, this would ruin the online side of the game again as people would just exploit it and do cutbacks all game.
There are only two good things about the gameplay for me - the dribbling and the action in and around the box, these have been the main positive things throughout the series though, and as the game hasn't been reworked, you'd expect them to still be there.

AI

This element of the game may be the weakest in the game - I only conceded 2 or 3 goals in all of the games I played, and these were against the top sides on Top Player. If that's the best the game has to offer, then the single player side of the game is no good really.
Your teammates also don't offer you much support going forward, they will often just stand still instead of making runs, or run right by defenders instead of making space for themselves.
I tried the BAL thing as well, and your teammates don't pass to you when you're in a good position and generally do really stupid things most of the time.
Keepers affect the gameplay but are controlled by AI, so I will comment about them here - they are still retarded and parry any shot with a bit of power, a lot of the time straight into the net or out to a striker.
The referees are card happy and give fouls for good challenges a lot.
I havn't seen the advantage rule played.

Animations
The animations are a joke, the running animation is especially laughable.
That 90 degree auto-feint thing is very annoying - nobody in real life can shift their body weight that quickly, keep their balance and keep up their speed, it's impossible.
Overall, the animation technology seems to be from last gen, because animations don't flow, can be interrupted, and most just look unrealistic (mocap not used?).

Graphics

The graphics are fairly good, especially the player faces.
I've said it before but the length of the shorts is a joke, look at them, they are as long as the shirts! Not a big thing, but annoying and looks silly.

Sound

The chants are rubbish, and the sound when the ball is hit is too loud and unrealistic. When you watch a football match you can hardly (if at all) hear the ball being struck above noise of the crowd unless it's hit hard next to a camera.
Jon Champion is a good commentator, that's a plus point.

Presentation

The menus look amateurish, not important though, but as a lot of editing would need to be done on the consoles, looking at those screens for ages editing stuff would hurt my eyes. The overlay in the game is fairly bad too, made worse by all the player names being in all capital letters.

Overall - 6/10
, it's got a few of the positives from the old PES games in it, but it's just not improved whatsoever through the years.
The PS2 editions still seem to play a better game of football than the next-gen versions.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

You can use the right stick to aim a manual pass if you see a player somewhere you want to pass to but don't trust the game to get it to them.

-

I hate Mark Lawrenson though - all of his lines sound like he's reading from a book with his camp monotone voice. Do you think they heard his lines but didn't have the heart to tell him how shit he sounded?

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

I know about the right analog stick manual passing, it's shit and useless. Your target (a player or space) has to be in one of only 8 directions. You can't base your tactics around only having 8 directions to pass in...

You are wrong about the passing. Evo has always been about mixing the passing up and I use a combination of single X taps - which as you say, about puts it on the spot where you are vaguely aiming.

But, you dont sound like you've played much of the recent versions. Holding down through ball and aiming in the direction of a player will 9 times out of 10 put it in front of them - I used through ball alot, even for normal passes as it gives you nice movement.

Then the right stick (and Right stick and R1 for me to do manual lobs) will put the ball WHEREVER you want.

One twos are also good as you get the pass and the other player runs into space and you can use him again, or use the space.

Plus there are other ways too - sounds like you just hammer X and want it to be good? You got to work for it...

Course it doesnt - you can pass anywhere with the right stick... jeez.

That OF is ok, lots of wrong transfers, numbers not done, line ups not done, number and fonts not done on shirts.

As you say, will do for now, but not great.

Be warned, it wipes off your Konami ID login, so make a note before you try it!

How am I wrong? All you do is aim in the general direction of a player, press X/A and you get a perfect pass 99/100 times. Same with through balls (I was talking about normal passing in that other post). The problem isn't that I hammer the pass button, it's that there is zero skill involved in playing a killer pass to split a defence, none whatsoever.
I have played all of the recent versions so you are wrong there too, and 6, 08 and now 09 are dissapointing.
Course it doesnt - you can pass anywhere with the right stick... jeez.
Go to training mode then, with manual passing, you can only aim them:

Up
Down
Left
Right
Diagonal up-right
Diagonal up-left
Diagonal down-right
Diagonal down-left

I guarantee you that.

Fair do's actually - hadnt really noticed it in game, but the passing does seem much more stiff and less free this year. I've just done 5 mins training using the right stick only for passing and whilst I dont think its totally only those 8 directions, I will say that it allows very little lee-way from those rough areas...

I'm pretty sure in 08 and 6 that the manual passing was a lot more 'loose' than that as I always used it to angle slight through balls with.

I'll got back to a match and see if its the same...

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

I think it may just be a mental thing with them seeming less "angled" in matches, with defenders there and players running all over the place, you have more to focus on than just the ball.

The lack of manual passing has been my main problem with PES since playing FIFA 08, it just adds so much more to the game being able to play short/long passes and crosses exactly where you want them to go, if you execute them properly.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA TALK OR POLITICAL CHAT)

Added the chants

Cheers Rad, I'll have a go tonight. (I think I read someone said to keep MP3's fairly short as possible to avoid crashes, but he might have been wrong)

Anyone know where I can get European chants from?

but on the other hand full manual doesnt reflect a football match...pes has taken the route of stats refelecting teams and matches while fifa is on the manual artificial side of the fence...

Thats definitely a fair point and part of what makes FIFA 'dull' at times as all the players feel the same - where PES you can tell who is good at passing, control etc.

Something I prefer TBF.

Not really, as it has both assisted and manual, you have a choice...
People always say that sort of thing, that manual means player stats don't make a difference, although it does detract from it a bit, I think there's more realism in being able to play realistic passes cross-field ahead of players than having to ping the ball around perfectly, with worse players passing it slightly slower...

Now you see this is something I've often read.

But I can never feel the difference between players on Pro Evo, especially because the AI cheats so your players qualities are nullified by the computer.

Your right Rob92. I said this months ago. The manual passing on the right stick has always been in only 8 directions. Its the same as regular passing but you have a power bar so you can play behind or ahead of your players.

This question might have been ignored in my long post, but i'll ask it again now:

Can anyone tell me what is better about the gameplay in PES 2009 than PES5 (or any other PES on PS2)?

I can't name one thing...

it was 4 years ago, thats only a nostalgia because things have been changed,i like street fightger, river raid, kick off, snow bros and all other atari/amiga games but it dosent mean that we can play them forever,u have to deal with it,thats all we have now,if u like then u will play it if u dont then u wont play..thats simple..

from my experience worse players in pes2009 pass atrociously...imo with decent option file and stats configuration it can be brought to a quite good level...(i dont play online with strangers that do anything to lag/cheat and i dont like playing with people i dont know)
EAs only left to make stats of fifa10 deeper which will be the last nail on the pes coffin...

Probably teetering on the off-topic thing but actually Streetfighter and PES are games i compare all the time.

It's the thing that warmed me to ISS in the first place back in the day actually and PES is even closer. Both games once you learn the mechanics of them essentially come down to the player skill and the character/team match-up.

These PES updates we get each year remind me when we had SF 2, Champion Editon, Hyper Fighting and the Alpha games, some were minor updates with small changes....some brought new game changing-gameplay mechanics and character rosters to the table.

Streetfighter hits this generation of consoles in the new year, and like PES the gameplay at it's core remains the same, but the whole front end...animation routines and graphics have been given a massive overhaul and players from the arcades where it is already released are giving fantastic feedback. EGM claims it is ''a masterpiece of a game''.

Makes me wonder why Konami can not do the same, keep the core gameplay but now we have the hardware, give us the bells and whistles, give us the pure indulgent cosmetics now and wow us with the fantastic atmosphere recreated visually and sonically

In years gone by indeed people come up with the old classic ''gameplay is all that matters'' but that to me doesn't wash the same anymore now we have these mega-flop crunching mini-H.A.L.s plugged into our home entertainment setups. Give PES the graphics that compliment it's gameplay now it's certainly possible to do so.
