IGN review

Closing Comments
For all its problems off the pitch, there’s no doubting that PES 2009 is the most fun football game on the market. There’s a nagging feeling that this is merely the game that the past iterations should have been, but there’s no denying that it plays as good a game as ever – which means for the neutral, the choice of which game to pledge their allegiance to is as hard as ever. Ultimately, FIFA wins out thanks to it offering the most comprehensive package, but those who choose to spend the next season in the company of PES won’t be disappointed.

6.0 Presentation
The bizarre J-Pop is thankfully absent, though the menus are as obtuse as ever and it pales next to the glorious production of FIFA.
7.0 Graphics
PES never feels like it’s truly embraced the HD generation and this is no exception – at least the frame-rate remains solid when playing offline.
6.0 Sound
Lawrenson and Champion phone in their commentary and the crowds are nondescript, but it’s saved by the meaty thud of leather on leather.
9.0 Gameplay
Restored to the glory days of PES’s gone by, it’s as gracious as ever and a constant delight to play.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
It’s a shame that online disappoints yet again, but Master League is present and correct plus Become a Legend definitely has legs.
8.5
Great OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Let`s FIFA 09 :D

I don't quite understand the people that are knocking the refs. Just don't go flying in from behind with both feet if you want to avoid red cards. I have played the demo about 40 times and I have had one red I believe. It's all in the nuances. I am never, ever surprised when I get a red card, never in PES6, PES2008 or PES2009. You know when a red is in order. You know what angles of attack give red cards etc.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Cancelled my preorder PS3 version from overseas. Will rent game when it comes out in the US. Will stick with PS2 version as well. I am hispanic myself, and after reading that very long and thorough review, my expectations were completely deflated. I wasn't that impressed with the demo myself. The spanish reviewers sounded very sad at the decadence of the game and felt obligated to give it the score they did.

Conclusion:

"PES2009 is sadly a step backwards even compared to PES2008. It has lost fluidity of the game, ball physics have worsen in determined movements, the animations are far more robotic than before(this is a very serious problem), the AI continues it's path without improving, and possesses far more errors than last years, which we find to be unacceptable. Visually, it falls under last-gen no matter how much High Definition it possesses, and overall, it has lost a multitud of official licenses."

Biggest load of crap I've ever read.

Can you play fifa09 using the d-pad instead of the analogue stick??

Agreed. I've had a lot of players sent off, and they all deserved it.

I'm MOST glad the deflection bug from PES2008 (that I only noticed last week) is gone - the one where you're dribbling, the CPU runs into you and deflects the ball out, and the CPU gets the throw/goal kick, whilst if you do the exact same thing the CPU STILL gets the throw/goal kick...

Biggest load of crap I've ever read.

What beggars belief is that people are actually falling for it.

I mean, I know that evo-web is skewed way off centre, but even then to give credence to a review that says that PES2008 is the better game requires such a suspension of disbelief that there would be red flags going off everywhere.

I mean, it would be acceptable if there was an alternative that was just in a different league, but there isn't. They are both similar games.

I think that a lot of people made their minds up in October 2007 how they were going to feel about PES2009, and they don't actually seem to be basing their opinions on the actual game.

I don't think many people are claiming its perfect, but (in response to the meristation comments) :

It certainly plays a decent game, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the ball physics at all. In fact FIFA feels way too floaty for my liking.
It's fluid and more responsive than ever before (though if what you want is fluid dribbling 95% of the time you'll be disappointed).
AI is definitely better, as defenders don't just get out of the way on top level like they did last year.
As for next-gen graphics, well, I don't see that level of detail on the PS2 games.
The licenses really aren't an issue for me provided I can recreate them, which I can (though the 360 edit mode needs bringing up to speed).
I can't argue that the animation makes the players look a tad stiff, but it's no worse than PES6 on 360 which played a decent game and they're not particularly distracting, and basically the same as last year's game.

I think there's also a lot to be said for people having had the time to get used to FIFA08, so PES feels weird in comparison, just like FIFA used to feel weird to all PES-vets. But mostly it's just people talking bollocks, the areas in which PES is lagging is the areas it's ALWAYS been behind, presentation, online, number of teams, tournaments and (yes) licenses...

not anymore, now its MORE

bad keepers, bad sound affects, bad animation, bad ball physics, goals dont look good, it doesnt feel satisfying to score goals anymore, features in previous PES games taken out(things like untucked shirts, being able to mix and match shirts, shorts and socks etc)

even the PES feeling is going away

PES2010 NEEDS to be something special because unlike PS2 days the "other" games actually plays a great game of football plus it has everything PES doesnt have

That spanish review seems a lot more genuine than others I have read. At least they dont call this game 'the next gen experience we've been waiting for'. They may be wrong in saying its a backwards step from 08 but what cant be denied is this is hardly ground breaking steps forward is it. The fact that there are people who would rather have the PS2 version tells u all u need to know. It shouldn't even be a debate on whether a PS2 version is better to play than a PS3/360 version but to me the demo feels like I am playing a game which is built for the PS2.

lets just hope KONAMI wont quit the fight and EA becomes complacent again...

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

yes you can customise the keypad to whatever you want, try posting Fifa stuff in the Fifa forum though this is the PES forum...

Cheers...........
Although reading the fifa thread then reading the pro evo thread, differentiating between the two is a bit tricky.:FISH:

The thing is m8, sometimes the CPU tackles for us, and its been numerous times where I kept my hand off the sliding tackle but suddenly out of nowhere an AI teammate comes in and tackles viciously from behind. And there have been numerous occasions where u get the ball clearly but instead a yellow card, sometimes even a red.

And every dive always warrants a yellow card whereas in real life, refs rarely give yellow cards instead allowing play to go on and ignore the diving twat.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

IGN score for PES2008: 9,2

IGN score for PES2009: 8,5

does anyone think those guys are trustable after that pathetic review of PES2008????

and for PES2009 they are giving 9 for gameplay! that's ridiculous, the gameplay is worse than the PS2 versions and gets a higher ecore???

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Right, played the full version just now.
Only played 2 CL exibition games, but here are my thoughts;

Gameplay: Better then the demo, not so mechanical, more control and more freedom it seems
Graphics: Bit more polished, no major overhaul but still improved IMO
Animations: Still poo poo, although tackles look amazing
Physics: Same as demo
Keepers: A lot better, no more stupid parrying
Commentary: Same as last year, couple of new lines, but still repetitive as fuck
Weather effects: What weather effects????

I like it though, I really really do...Dont know why it just feels very good

You already have the full game??? How did you get it?

I would not be surprised. In fact I expected it already ;)

So you think it's better we don't touch EDIT MODE??
It's better just waiting original Konami update?

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

jesus i don't know what version to get

european and loads of option files or japanese because of the updates like in the video TG posted, but "NO" option files..

17 oct or 27 nov ?
hahah

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Sorry for this very stupid question, but is there a (little) chance of Konami let us use our edited uniforms online? Or all this fuzz about the Edit Mode is only for offline playing?

This is exactly what I experienced in the Demo unfortunately. I hope PES2010 is a beginning of something beautiful as it once was. I pray for PES2010 and beyond, I really do.

The only version I play currently with my mate is the PS2 version which still gives me that feeling and is a blast in Multiplayer. This is the reason why I will stick with the PS2 version. It should hold me until something totally new comes out from Seabass's mind.

I think the PES2009 keepers are more realistic than they've ever been. PES2008 ones were crap because they batted it straight back into the 6 yard box and often stopped the ball from running free as it hit them twice, PES2009 keepers who don't hold the ball almost always push the ball wide of the goal to safety, that's if they're not catching it, which they do realistically and on the occasions you would expect them to.

Sound effects, by which I assume you mean ball thud, has apparently been sorted (though I'm reluctant to believe that). Chants are editable in most versions anyway.

Animation is stiff but some animations are better than those in FIFA, and I've never seen a PES player do the completely unrealistic header that I saw a FIFA player do in the first game I played on the FIFA demo.

Ball physics are better than FIFA's floaty balloon. Goals look great and it's extremely satisfying to score (especially when you're crap like I am). Untucked shirts not being in edit mode is annoying, but FIFA's edit mode (at least in 08) was utter garbage anyway, and I have no idea what it's like in 09. All of the editing things come under presentation anyway, which I'm being critical of.

So in short, we don't agree on the physics stuff, goalscoring or goalkeepers, and the rest of it is stuff I want improved anyway.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

l0l video games and pot live well together lOl

hehe, can't argue with that...

I agree with you fully. There's just something about that demo that kept me playing and screaming at the TV for like 2 hours last nite. It's really grown on me, if you play it like it was meant to be played, dare I say it, it's the most fun I've had with PES for years. Definitely a deep game, a few little niggles and the usual 8 direction fripes, but it's a very solid game of footie. You really notice the difference between Ronaldo and Scholes for instance when controlling, passing, shooting, dribbling..the forwards dive in to crosses, the tight passing is very good (although sometimes obviously bad passes still his the target despite the defender being RIGHT THERE TO cut it out)..

Overall, had a blast, the more I play it, the more I play like a game of football is supposed to play, the more I like.

(Hehe, shouting at the the TV. Know all about it. With an occasional jump out of my chair...)

Yes, me 2. Gave the game another decent testing run yesterday, playing whole night long with my mate that also nows how to play the game. This really is good, got some good matches with a lot of excitement. When totally adapted to the timing and other changes of this version we really came out with some great plays and intuitive passes that f*cked up eachothers defence, Although the shooting still needs some "getting used to" cuzz too much shots are going over the top.

I also don't understand that, didn't get that much cards either so far. Maybe they just don't know how to tackle. Although sometimes when i applied pressure with other (CPU) players they sometimes got a card for a dumb charge...
