Review DEMO PES 2009 - Playstation 3

Hi, these are my first impressions after playing a few matches.
Before anything I have to say that this is just my opinion. It could be as good as anyone.

I've played a lot PES 2008 and the ones before that and I usually play Master League. I think this one could be the best one, even better my favorite one: Winning Eleven 9.

GOOD

- Graphics: I like the general impression. It looks smooth and sharp. I always play with the far camera and I don't care about the details, I care about the gameplay. Now you can see that there is no a plain picture of the stadium, you can see like a little fog.

- The pitch: the texture of the pitch is amazing.

- The menus: I like them, but this is personal.

- Gameplay: I think is smooth.

- Gameplay: Much better than PES 2008. Now we can play football. It is much better, but I have to play more.

- Goalkeeper kicks are really improved

- No slowdown at all.

- Fan chants are really good.

- It looks like the ball is heavier...this is great.

BAD

- Sound when you kick the ball, even in short passes, it is horrible.

- I have to play more, but I don't see anything else I didn't like it, and belive me, when PES 2008 came out I only played 2 matches and I hated it.

IN GENERAL
My opinion is really positive. I think this could be the best PES ever, but I need to play more, especially Master League when the game come out.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Downloaded the PS3 demo and im surprisingly impressed. PES 2009 is much better than 2008. As a comparison I would place it somewhere in between PES5 and 6. The game pace is slower than previous versions and you can finally play a passing, build up play game of football. The ball physics are improved as are the graphics. Lighting is fantastic and the grass colour is vibrant. Overall the gameplay is superior to 2008 but its not a huge improvement. This game needs a new engine. Anyway roll on tommorow for FIFA 09! :)

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

My 2 penny's worth after a couple of hours of playing. (Originally posted in another (i.e. wrong) thread)

Hmmm....mixed feelings on this one. To give a short review (and I'm being as open minded as I can be):

Graphics: Not very good, (not completely awful but the game looks, how do I put this, "semi-next-gen", rather than "full-on-next-gen")
Sound: Not very good (Annoying, monotonous crowd chants, unconvincing, muffled on-pitch grunts and the like)
Presentation: Not very good (partly due to the sub-par graphics, but all in all just doesn't feel polished)
Playability: Ummm...not as good as some PS2 Pro Evos/Winning Elevens.

So I guess that means Id sum this game up (judging by the demo) as all around, "not very good". However, it definitely has something that "the other footy game" hasn't really nailed for me. I think that's that deep down this game has shades of it's once great self and still retains a little of the FUN which made the series so popular. If you can look past the annoyances (which are pretty hard to miss!) there's still some enjoyable football to be played (albeit, arcade-like football) and some fun to be had. However, that's not really good enough in this day and age, and for sheer effort and polish my first impression is that "the other footy game" is (and it saddens me to say this) again the better game and where the smart money will be heading.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

If I had to make a review about pes 2009 demo, I would give it a 7. It's an improvement when you compare it with last year, but I can still taste that pes 2008 flavour in there.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

I haven't still the demo I use the torrent file and it remains 12 hours.
Oh shit

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

its better than pes08, for sure, but mel gibsons virtual safari 3 is better than pes2008. im still completely unimpressed. so ive seen the screenshots, seen the trailers, seen the gameplay vids, now played the demo. do i have to play the final game as well, to realise what i knew from the moment i saw the first screenshot and said all along?

the undiscerning will probably be quite happy with this, this would have angered me in the past because now i can just sit here with a wry smile knowing there is another game that is here to save us from konami's shitness.

oh and here is some comments taken from the last 4 pages. just to annoy people like santos/han/paulo who think no one can see how bad pes has become.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

whats up with the player faces
the player faces they are poor...look closely and you can see. there is like this oval shape of the pictures they put onto the 3D models..the forehead of the players are a completely different colour as the other part of the face....its hard to explain but very visible.
look at Thuram's face when you pick France, you will be able to see what i mean. yes the oval part looks like the player, but my gosh, this is bad konami..go back and work on the faces...it very visible on the black players in the demo

what build was the demo?

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

hmmm i played the PS3 demo,about 5 matches
its actualy not that bad :)
but it realy could be better,
only thing that popped right up right away was the GFX,its rly improved and player models looks great.
But the running animations are stil f*cked up.
I wil deffo get the full retail game for the PS3,then i can also give a full judgement of the game.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

PS3 Demo

-
- 90° turn
- Need more new animations
- Menu design too heavy (look big on my 46")
- No Full HD
- The Zidane roulettes out alone at times

these are the only negatives you could find?
mate go and play the game for longer...you will find more a lot more

I've played plenty of games against the computer and I had people around earlier too. Playing with people is a very different experience and much more enjoyable I have to say.

I hope this isn't the final build though.

+

Graphics are great
Defending is easier
Good ball physics

-

A lot of it is automated (tackles, clearances, blocks), you wanna be testing yourselves in danger situations not have the computer do it for you
Passing is wayward
You can't control the weight of through balls and often they lack the desired affect
Keepers parry a lot
Ball and chants sound so terrible

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

I would like to know who konami use for their motion capture or have they stopped using it all together. I've never seen goalies always dive like they are trying to catch the ball, or the way players pass and run. The game has no atmosphere to it, hate the ball sound effect and the players name in all capital letters.

The only thing i like about the demo is the pace of the game and the way the cpu press the players even though i think the fowards press a bit to much chasing all around the pitch and the adboards.

So no current gen footie game for me this year, and does anyone know how to make PS2 games look almost as good as a crt on a hdtv.

spot on mate:TU:
i don't understand why some people whu tryed the game, gived as fals hopes, telling as the game plays more like pes5/6, i have played those games so much, and i can clearly say, it is pes08 fixed version, which i am very dissapointed, as i still prefer the old ps2 pes games, as the game feelt right, and i really hoped to have that feeling back, on the next-gen, considering Nokami is still using the old enghine, but no they really lost it, giving as shit for three years on xbox360, i am growing tired of them now, a shame i really was hoping for a good old pes this year:(

Of course i need play more for find more good and bad points, but 5 minutes games...
i do just 8 games i think, it's just a little preview

Its the same for me this game its not worth the hype let alone 60€
Anyway the best thing you can do is to buy "component cables" for PS2 (the one with 3 cables Red Blue Green for video and 2 for audio)

Its not really like the crt even because generally hdtv's are bigger but its a bit better and its the best you can try.(i've done myself)

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Through balls are out of desired way most of times...

Tackles are heavly automated, players slide only on ball direction it seems, that's a huge gripe IMO as it reduces a lot your freedom..

Very disappointed

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

it looks like there is mud on the tops. but its just dodgy shadows and shading. Not happy, i prefer PES 2008 tops. The shorts are much better but they are kinda big.

Sometimes the CPU does a sliding tackle automatically even though i havn't pressed the O button. Gave away a penalty & got sent off. Whats all that about.

Probably is because you are pressing with "x" button. That way the defender makes a slide tackle. Dont press with X button all the time.

Agree with this, more or less. For me the worst are the animations when players running... it is not big deal for my taste, but I have to say they are really terrible.

C.Ronaldo has he's own scissors move/animation :)

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Initial impressions... (I've posted these elsewhere but waited till I caught up on this topic before posting them here)

I've played both the 360 and the PS3 demo now and I'm not sure what to make if it yet.

On the plus side you need to use build up passing a lot more, gone are the days of getting it to a winger and R1/RB'ing your way past the side back before crossing or cutting in etc... The AI defence is a lot better.
However...
I know they had to tweak player reactions, but they seem to have dulled the responsiveness, I think it may be the animations (or lack thereof) but receiving the ball feels 'clunky', for want of a better word and thats even taking into consideration they've brought back the R1 control button (which I was a big fan of before it disappeared mysteriously). Passing also seems a little odd for me, sometimes just random directions occur nowhere near the player you intended to pass to.
Dribbling is a lot different and will take a lot of getting used to, due to the tricks now being based on the movement buttons as well.
Keepers, seem to do some strange things again unfortunately. They catch certian shots when the flight of the ball will match the animation perfectly, but they parry an awul lot again and even some shots that have little power behind them can cause the keeper to block it, but not catch it. I've conceded already from one such instance and I couldn't believe the keeper didn't just pick the ball up as it rolled towards him.
Shooting, for those of you wondering, seems pretty much the same as 08, which was fine. The ball has a slightly different feel but they've not done anything radical here, which a lot of people will be happy with.
The final thing I'll say about the gameplay is the dribbling and collisions etc... I'm not sure what it is but the ball does seem disconnected from the players (which is good) but sometimes it feels a little too disconnected. There are times when you are being challenged by a defender and you think the defender should easily take the ball off you but you end up coming out the other side with it, now this doesn't seem bad at the time and you dont notice it much, but when it starts happening when you're defending it begins to become a problem. I think this may come down to the lack of animations again, which unfortunately we're going to be stuck with in the final build I would think.

And yeah, the in game sound is absolutely awful. Hearing the players call and shout is a nice touch, but the ball sound effects and the chants are groan worthy.

I know all I've said so far seems pretty bad but it does seem to have a bit more about it than 2008. It's a bit more of a thinkers game again, patience is required to get the most out of it, rather than all out attack, which is possibly why a lot of people wont like it at first, because we've been trained to play PES that way for the last couple of years but it will probably grow on you the more you play.
It's not an entirely new experience but I dont think anyone expected that, hopefully next years effort will see a lot more animations introduced and the niggley problems I already have with the game will be gone.

And finally, I have to say I think the PS3 version feels possibly slightly better to play, in case any of you are stuck with the problem of choosing. I think I'll stick with the 360 version to buy just for my friends list and multiplayer, but I would be tempted by the PS3 version as well... Maybe it'll be like PES4/PES5 and PES6 and I'll get both, haha.

Overall though I am finding it strangely enjoyable even after all those things. PES just has a little something that makes it worthwhile (most of the time).

It's funny, when I went to use the PS3 pad again, the Dpad felt weird. :SS

The game still feels more at home on the PS pad though, for sure. :TU:

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Just played the demo on 360. Few comments:

- I've forgotten how unplayable WE/PES is for me with the analogue stick, or with the 360 pad in general! I've come from the PS background (I've been playing WE since WE3 final version), and D-pad controls are essential for me. Of course, 360 supports it, but lord know if there are any players that play WE/PES with that awful D-pad. Plus I hate the bumper buttons since it feels so stiff compared to the dualshock L1/R1. I guess I can get used to it over time, but dunno if I ever will. WE series doesn't really need any analogue movement as long as their gameplay is scripted the way it is, so D-pad is the way to go. Is there any PS3 controller adaptor for 360 that is actually decent without lag? Or any third party 360 option that has a good D-pad that is placed where the left stick is?

- I ditched PES 2008 like many of you here for reasons that you all know, so this was my first WE/PES experience since 2007 on PS2. I screwed up a lot for first few matches, since the controls will not match up exactly with FIFA's no matter how much you try (for example, I was through on goal and used R1 and shoot thinking it was finesse shot; but of course, in WE it is chip shot, so I screwed up! Also accidentally used right stick attempting tricks but all it would do is the manual pass! :D ). But once I got used to it, it felt solid; definitely not as broken as 2008. game speed is decent, every player feels different, and it still has that certain "something" that FIFA still lacks. Of course, I really came to appreciate FIFA's freedom in passing in matter of minutes. It is still heavily scripted, but that's part of what makes WE/PES what it is. And it is still much more difficult than FIFA in higher difficulties, which is good for the challenge.

- One thing WE/PES has gotten right that FIFA NEVER, ever seem to get right, is players coming up for set pieces. WE has a dedicated menu for that, so you will always see players that you SHOULD see in the box, like your tall central defenders. So if I'm using Man U, I can have Ferdinand and Vidic come up and players like Scholes and Park should be outta there since they don't belong there. For some reason, every year, FIFA always seems random in this aspect and they really need to implement this feature.

- Goalkeeping still seems VERY dodgy, which is not a good sign. They are spilling the balls they shouldn't on a regular basis and I can foresee a lot of goals being scored due to goalkeeper blunders.

- Fouls don't seem to be called enough for your favour. Still haven't had one single free kick opportunity in a decent zone so far in 5 games, which worries me.

- Does anyone know if they kept that awful goalkeeper angle for penalty kicks when you are defending it from PES 2008? I sure hope not, but I'll test this out later by hacking someone down in the box.

Overall, I like it and it'll probably get a purchase from me unlike 2008. it's like a less broken version of it. I can still see it being fun in 1-on-1 multiplayer and lot of my friends still exclusively play WE/PES, so it'll be good in that sense. But for career mode, online and everything else, it'll be FIFA for me.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

i just played a couple of games and I really don't like the goalkeepers sometimes.
wtf, when they can't grab it, which they should do more, the ball bounces of weird and drops in the box. No resolute ball-punching animations in this demo i guess...

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

They have had one year to fix the Animation especially the Chicken style running and Why oh why is the ball thud sound in there. Im surprised there are not many more complaints about the chants some are pathetic. It’s a real mixed bag Im not disgusted like I was last year with 08 but im not really that exited either. I hadn’t built my hopes up this year and perhaps that’s just as well. Oh for Pes 5 with next Generation graphics.
My love for Pro Evo is starting to wane just like a mans for a woman who’s become a right bitch and is shagging everyone in sight and like Konami charging for it.
Never thought id ever say it but “lets Fifa 09” There is no doubt this year even Stevie Wonder can see that -

“ King Pro Evo is dead Long live King Fifa “ And Konami only have themselves to blame.

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

technically speaking:is there a way for konami to change and correct some of the game's crap animations(like the running and the auto feint) by an official patch ??????????????
it would be a good thing if they do so ,even if it's after a month or two from release.............................

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

im not sure if i buy ps3 version or pc version seems a little bit diferent

Re: PES 2009 News Discussion Etc. (STRICTLY NO FIFA DEMO IMPRESSIONS OR POLITICAL CHA

Just played the demo and really wanted it to be good but its not, seems no different from pes 2008, only a little slower, the players run like Benny Hill, the ball sounds like a cardboard box, tackling is crap, only made 2 tackles all game and got 2 red cards, the tackles werent even from behind lol, the game feels like ISS, gonna sound like a Liverpool fan here but next year will be the year (hopefully)
