Next Gen Consoles

Wasn't polygon that receive $ 700,00 dollars from Microsoft for a suspicious cheap "documentary"?

And they reviewed TLOU with a 7.5?!?!? WTF!

And gave Sim City a 9.5!

I am almost sure their Xbomb review will be at least an 8.0

To be fair, all things considered, 7.5 is a great score considering it's a console for the next 5-6 years at least, and we haven't seen even a fraction of it at its best yet. Uncharted 4, for example, will be sensational.

It's a bloody good review, too. No skimping, and they do say it's a fantastic bit of kit.

7.5 is really high for polygon Sony reviews, that´s for sure.

I actually think I would give TLOU 7.5/10 as well

It just wasn't as good as people made out, IMO. More of a cinematic game rather than pushing you to do anything. It never got any harder and there were times when you were just wandering around doing nothing.

Uncharted 2, on the other hand...

And that´s the reason you read polygon! ;)

M$

Not at all. Uncharted 2 is the best single player game I've ever played.

Looking at Polygon's reviews over the years, they favour and score several PS3 titles very highly:

http://www.metacritic.com/publication/polygon?filter=games

Not really biased towards either system. Their average review is 70% which all things said evens everything out.

In all honesty, I can say I'd never even heard of Polygon before that PS4 review. I just thought it looked very nicely laid out and plenty of content including positives and negatives. The fact there aren't any astonishing games available at launch for the PS4 perhaps justifies it's 7.5. In a few months or years that could well be a 10/10. We'll have to wait and find out.

For me there are more than enough games available to justify the buy of any NG console. Also to review a console hardware based on the games that they think are not good enough is just stupidity. A game review is based on personal taste, a hardware should never be reviewed based only on that.

I hope all the bitching about this gen is over now, cause the games looks pretty decent to me.
I just hope they are running smooth, which is the most important, I think the pixels look pretty good 1080 or 720.

To me an 8 GB of FIFA 14 is not good enough to warrant a day one next-gen purchase. There's reason why it is only 8 GB. Size doesn't matter they say, but afraid that's not plausible in this era.

I have just changed my PS4 bundle from Killzone and the 12 months ps plus (and FIFA seperately), to the PS4 with FIFA and another pad, and getting Assassins Creed seperately.

I realised I have always hated the killzones so binned it.

In terms of games that are under the radar what's good? I do not want Killzone, COD, BF4. Happy to consider a racing game if decent, and something else that looks interesting. Any ideas?

EDIT:

Most of us have our pre-orders sorted so rather than console oneupmanship, it would be good to actually discuss the games and what to go for. I'm getting excited now - I always am for console launches!

Well, kinda of expected better reviews regarding the PS4 and games. The best game is a side-scrolling shooter? Hmm...

You'll hate: How dang hot the PS4 gets
This could get ugly. Even when the PS4 is idling, without any application or game running, this system gets heated. The top of the console won't get hot enough to fry an egg, but the heat exhaust from the back of the system is palpable. If you're planning on some marathon gaming sessions with your new console, you could make it double as a space heater. And we highly advise that you don't leave it in an enclosed home theater case--our best guess is that it'd be cooked to well done in an hour.

Thus far, the PS4's heat hasn't been an issue; then again, we've only had it for less than a month. We're not saying that the first generation of PS4s is destined for a mass red-ring-of-death/yellow-light-of-doom scenario, but if you're nervous about sending your console in for repairs, you might want to consider waiting to see how the initial production run fares in the wild.

Yes. Metacritic puts the PS4 exclusive games in the "meh" category as they seem to be mostly a forgettable group of games... Knack being particularly boring. I do think it's shocking that Killzone isn't rated a better game than Resogun,... Even if Resogun is great for a twin stick shooter, there is just no way it brings the replay value that Killzone does. I think the reviewers are being overly critical of an FPS game at launch and giving an arcade space shooter a lower bar to jump over.

Still. The early consensus is (that like nearly all console launches) the pickings are sparse. Thank God there are some good multiplatform games out there like BF4, and AC4 for the PS4. I'm hoping that FIFA 14 can be included in that group as well... waiting to see a next gen review.

IGN have reviewed FIFA 14 next-gen already.

Seeing as I have the PC version, I'm hoping to get some thoughts from someone who's played both the PC and NG versions. I keep seeing people say how great FIFA looks on NG but I'm not sure these people have seen FIFA at 1080p 60fps on PC. If it's the same game as PC (and 8GB size suggests it might be), then I'll give FIFA a miss.

It's a shame the PS4 isn't launching with a great PS4-only game. Instead the games I'm getting will be AC4/NFS/NBA 2k14/Madden ... all multi-platform anyway.

I thought NG Fifa has the ignite engine and the many extra animations that actually make a difference?

Reviews seems as expected to be honest. Most launch games end up being average, and I usually enjoy them for the fact they look much better than last gen games.

Killzone seems solid enough, except a pretty bad review from Kotaku, FIFA is getting decent reviews, and Knack seems pretty bad which is what I thought might happen.

All in all I'm happy enough with KZ, FIFA and Contrast on launch day. Launch games mean nothing to the overall span of a console generation. One thing I'm slightly pissed about is that PS4 doesn't support 3D blurays. They kept that one quiet. They won't offer an indication whether it'll be patched in later. Laughable that I need to keep my PS3 for media purposes when I'm paying £350 for a new console.

Nooooo! I'm one of the 0.001% of the population that still enjoys 3D! Gravity in 3D looked amazing.

Guess I'll need to keep my PS3 for this then :(

Personally, there's not a single launch title for either console that looks impressive. Killzone looks beautiful but that franchise has always been more about looks than quality.

But there are some games in the next year or so that truly have me psyched, like Watch Dogs, Dragon Age, Witcher, Destiny, the Order, and not to mention the next FIFA.

I've got Killzone, FIFA and Assassins Creed for launch day, and even though my expectations for them aren't especially high, I'm just happy as hell that the next gen has finally arrived.

Ordered an XBone confirmed now.

Getting the Forza 5 pack and also Ryse. Ryse is getting really mixed reviews - it looks awesome, but gameplay is a bit hit and miss. Expecting it to be a bit of eye candy for the new system only.

Will also be getting FIFA and Lego Marvel when its eventually released. Was gonna get COD if I could have bundled it in with the credit terms (but couldnt... long story!), so dont know if I fancy shelling out £50 knowing its not getting reviewed well.

Really looking forward to it now though. Played a bit of Forza 4 tonight and forgot how good it is and what I've seen of Forza 5, thats gonna be amazing.

Yea, the selection of launch games looks poor to me. Killzone look stunning but it's not my type of game. Was hoping there would be a game that I just couldn't resist and have to pick up a PS4 this year, but there isn't.

Next gen FIFA plays a smoother game and looks a lot better than current gen.
IMO next gen FIFA looks crisper and better than the PC version.

Early PS4's dying no image just sound. all over the internet and YouTube
