Next Gen Consoles

The problem is that Sony should have been asking this stuff back in August or so, and then released a statement in late October / November saying what was going to be available day 1, what would be patched in day 1, what would be patched in over the coming months and what isn't (currently) planned to go in at all.

As it is, this announcement via FAQ makes it seem like there was no room for manoeuvre, no plans to add anything in over the coming months/years. In particular it makes the Music Unlimited thing sound insidious, trying to force people to sign up to something they don't want.

I have no doubt that the CD, MP3, external HDD and DLNA functionality will be patched in ASAP, whether it's day 1 or in the months after that. It's wrong to equate this to MS's initial plans for Xbone - even if all of this was intentional for the sake of avoiding piracy/forcing MU subscriptions, the scale of this is nothing like the same as what MS had in store - but it's valid to call it a PR screw-up/oversight which has left a sizeable number of people disgruntled. It's up to Yoshida to, er... gruntle... everyone, ASAP.

All these features are coming to the PS4. Conversation should highlight more of Xbone's deficiencies and impotence, however.

The features will probably be coming because there is an outcry for them. If Sony already had a plan to include them later, it was incredibly clumsy of them not to say so.

After Yoshidas tweets about the whole DNLA and MP3 thing, they've already changed the FAQ:

Will the PS4 system support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.
*We appreciate your feedback and are exploring possibilities

Will I be able to play MP3s on the PS4 system?
No.

According to some insider, it's coming in one of the next updates, ahead of schedule because of the outcry.

Sony probably wants the OS running as simple as possible at launch to avoid problems, and add things little by little over time.

I noticed that in there around this time yesterday. I agree with Isslander in that Sony were clumsy if they were planning to put DLNA etc in later and didn't make that clear. As it is - judging by what Yoshida said after meeting the dev team and how they'd confirmed with some other features that they're planning to patch them in later - I'm not sure they were dead set on putting it in, so they decided not to risk saying they would eventually be coming in case they changed their mind.

People are free to believe anything they want, mate. If you want to believe in this you can, is your choice

Believe!?!?!

I just want to know if the XBone is capable of 1080p at all. I bet its been mentioned already but I've forgot.

That's cool then because I'm getting Fifa and Forza on launch :)

Why are people slating Microsoft when its Dice and other makers doing them at 720P?

Just because the Xbone has some games at 1080p, doesn't mean it's as good as the PS4.

It's less powerful and the gap will have a tendency to grow.

With the PS4 having the obvious, but slight, hardware advantage (slightly faster graphics card, slightly faster RAM) I'm not surprised to see launch games showing some slightly better graphics on the PS4.

However, as both systems have custom hardware and software that help both consoles push game content at a more efficient pace than a similarly built PC, it remains to be seen which console will be more "developer friendly" 12 months from now. Initially, with all console launches, developers are only able to utilize the native power of the hardware in the console... as the system matures, developers have better software tools and shortcuts for each system and that's how graphics tend to improve pretty dramatically over the life of a console despite the hardware staying the same.

I highly doubt games will look significantly different on either console in a year's time or so. If trying to pick your console choice today, I wouldn't put too much importance on which system is pushing the best resolution on day 1, because history has shown that both consoles will probably be in the same place on day 365. I'd pick my console based on whatever exclusive games and features it offers over its competitor.

I currently favor the Xbox One because I want to use it as a set-top box replacement on all TVs across my house. The PS4 doesn't seem to support that for now. Either way, I'm waiting until the spring (at least) to make my decision. The launch line-ups look so-so for both systems, with neither system having a worthwhile exclusive to me... The Xbox One lineup may be slightly better as I like the Forza and Dead Rising series, but neither are system sellers to me when I'm still playing games on my 360 and PS3.

Besides, in 6 months we can actually find out with console maker is able to better deliver on its promises. Will Microsoft be able to match its ambition to give users a new and better media consumption experience? Will Sony actually be able to implement any features as they've promised beyond playing games?

Last generation, Microsoft launch systems suffered high failure rates, but Microsoft clearly won the battle of the OS features over the life of the system. Sony made a great piece of hardware, however removed quite a few useful features over the life of the console and never caught up to Xbox Live in terms of quality (and had an embarrassing 2 month service shutdown and huge security leak). I'd rather take 6 months and figure out what's going to happen before spending the effort on changing all my video game shit.

Just like this gen, I don't think there will be much difference over the long haul. Sony first party games may be different though.

You mean like an external hard drive? You didn't read the announcement did you? ;)

No I didn't. I take it that's a no then?!

Edit: Just read more comments. If it gets patched in later that's fine. I don't stream or play films from HD much now tbh. Just a nice to have. Its a games machine first and foremost and I can just connect the laptop to the TV anyway.

I didn't say it was

How will the gap grow? One isn't gonna get more powerful or one get less powerful haha

Dice could make BF4 work on Ps4 as native 1080p but they worked more on XboxOne..If developers try hard to achive full potential of consoles, the difference will be bigger than this generation..As a long time Xbox users, it will be hard to choose between two considering Halo and Geow are dead now...

I would be more worried about online stability on the PS4 with higher demand graphically and with more users their track record suggests could be a problem area.
Microsoft has spent millions on their server farms for the cloud and online gaming

Guys, which game do you think will sell for the most or be the most sought after on launch on Xbox One or PS4?

Fifa 14, Battlefield 4 or Need For Speed: Rivals?

Amazon are doing an offer where you send in one of them above and you get the trade in price plus £22 off the next gen version so ill be getting one of them next gen games for free.

I'm gonna get rid of Fifa on the 360 because i wont need it and sell the Xbone/PS4 game i choose to knock £40-£45 off the retail.

So is the consensus now that DLNA and Audio and Video support will be coded back in so nothing to worry about?

I wouldn't count on it. No one knows what sort of deals they have struck with Music Unlimited, Netflix, etc. Maybe Sony sweetened those deals by saying these services would be the only way to enjoy Music and Movies through PS4.

I totally guessing here, of course.
