Next Gen Consoles

Why are we console players fighting each other, can't we be civil and agree to bash that dumb PC-crowd instead

Dumb PC Crowd?
Isn't the only reason people play console games is because they are to dumb to work a PC? Duh press button insert disk... sit down and watch the benefits roll in....

But do they use that 50% of power to make the games look or perform 50% better?

BF4 pushes 50% more pixels on PS4, with better framerates.

Cod pushes 125% more pixels.

And the "POWA OF THE CLOUD" was Microsoft's attempt to convince the xbots that the hardware power advantage of the PS4 wasn't a big deal, but it's pure BS.

Only time will tell regarding the Cloud, its not going to be implemented to its max for ages anyway i would imagine.

How you can call BS on anything when it aint even released is a joke on its own.

I WANT MORE PIXELS GOD DAMMIT!!!!

To be honest i don't really care, for me and most people unless you have two versions together playing them at the same time then you could actually notice the difference and care.

I have a 32inch tv and sit at a distance I probably won't notice the pixel difference anyway.

For the people that actually care about that then they will have a play station by the looks of it, if that makes them happy.

But why do these people who are going to buy a superior machine for less money get so upset about people that want to buy the other machine?

I think most people know the differences of both machines, gamin wise the ps4 probably pips the Xbox, but if people want to pay more for what the Xbone offers then what is wrong with it? Again if it is not worth it, people won't buy it.

About the cloud stuff I will bow down to your expertise as I don't know much about it, but I have read a couple of things that seem to think it is very possible in a couple of years or so where it could make quite a difference, but we will see.

Anyway we will all see which one is better in a month or so and people can make their own informed decisions based on their preferences.

airjoca what do you think of the PS4 not having DLNA, not being able to play CD, Mp3's, have an External hard drive, support USBs and not being able to change your wallpaper?

Everyone seems to be jumping on the Xbone is shit bandwagon at the moment.

Just for balance, both consoles look shit.

Real progress is all games at native 1080p resolution running at 60fps. Neither console is going to deliver that across the board and games that do so will be in the minority.

To me that's a big disappointment, but then again most people won't give a shit. I'm looking at it as an enthusiast PC gamer i.e. a small minority.

I don't think they were ever going to be on par with PC's for the prices people want to pay.

Nor did I expect them to be. At the very least I was hoping that 1080p would become the standard resolution for all games. Many games will be below 1080p which isn't really progress from the 360/PS3 era. Full HD gaming should be the standard by now.

Having said that, the 360 and PS3 were pushing and surpassing gaming PCs at their time of launch. This new generation of consoles aren't getting close to doing that.

I'm in the same boat as you - I thought 1080p at a smooth 60fps was going to be a given for all games on the next-gen consoles.

People can argue which of the two is better, but in truth both are pretty shite in terms of where computer hardware power/performance is right now. If you're happy with that, fair enough.

For people buying the consoles due to the entertainment things as well as gaming... Do you really not have your TV setup already figured out?...

Yoshida said he would look at it on Twitter.

Then the faq changed and something like "we're looking into it" was added.

And then some insider at GAF said DNLA, MP3 support and more stuff was coming in one of the first updates, ahead of schedule due to people's reaction on the internets. Sony wants simple working OS first, and will keep adding features if all goes well.

I'm not worried at all mate.

I really couldn't give two shits whether games are in 60fps or not. I don't really like the visual effect of it and have never played a game at 30fps and thought it was rubbish. That said, I think PS4 will end up being 1080 and 60fps before too long.

I really don't get the negativity for either console. They'll both have some amazing, innovative games and the advantage over PC, for me, is that i won't have to sit down and learn about PC parts, drivers, all that stuff. Fair play if enthusiasts enjoy it, good luck to them, but the last thing I want to do is to be faffing with PC stuff rather than just playing games.

The previous consoles may have equalled PC at the time but they long overtook consoles pretty immediately. All I care about is that the consoles are better than the previous ones, and they look miles better.

You don't often have to do those things any more. No offence but I don't think you are aware of how much simpler PC gaming is these days. I'll leave it there as I don't want to de-rail the thread. :))

To build and maintainable / upgrade a gaming PC I'd say you need a fair bit of knowledge of the subject, as stuff can go wrong and upgrading etc again requires knowledge and keeping upto date on PC tech. I understand why people enjoy this side of it, I personally wouldn't.

Back to consoles, I love the simplicity, and there will be plenty of games on both that innovate and provide tons of fun :))

Well, PS4 runs Battlefield 4 a lot better than a PC with the same price tag, so it's not shite. It fairs pretty well.

If you want top of the line graphics of course PC is the choice, but it costs a lot more.

And as far as I know, only Battlefield is confirmed to not be 1080p on PS4, everything else is (so far).
I wasn't comparing PC to console value for money so I'm not sure how that point is a relevant reply.

My expectation from a new games console today would be to innovate and do something truly impressive, at least matching the visuals from what a high-end PC could do at high settings whilst running natively at 1080p 60fps.
In terms of where PC gaming has been for a number of years now, I don't think this is an unreasonable expectation, nothing I've seen so far from either console has looked any better than PC gaming circa 2011 so in that regard it is pretty shite to not be pushing any boundaries at all - I didn't really expect consoles to be right at the cutting edge of technology even at the time of their launch, but they're not even close this time around.

Just to be clear, this post and my previous one aren't arguing PC vs consoles, these are simply points that are relevant to the topic of the NG consoles and my expectations of their specs/performance/visuals.
Although PC vs consoles is a valid discussion to have, many people tend to be very closed minded on the subject and get all pissy about it at the mere mention of a PC for some reason...

As has been said before, consoles are sold at a loss and Sony/MS make their money back on the software. It's not a fair comparison when we are talking about subsidised hardware (consoles) versus hardware that is sold to make a profit (PCs).

In the end the cost of gaming on a console vs PC isn't much different. I pay more for the hardware and much less for games, you pay more for games and much less for the hardware.

I think it is relevant to some extent. Especially when we are talking about high quality & performance vs cost.
Exactly, which I wasn't. I said that both consoles specs are pretty shite in terms of the computer hardware available today (and consoles are computers). At the launch of previous generations, it's been much closer, with the consoles even having the edge at launch for a short period of time, here's a graph from an Nvidia slide comparing GPUs:

ps4-vs-720.jpg

Now they're already starting off way behind. I'm not talking about the price whatsoever, simply what is available. At launch, consoles used to be leading the way or at least be somewhere near the cutting edge, they're simply not this time around. There were GPUs released over a year and a half ago with more processing power than what's in the PS4.

Again to reiterate in case people get the wrong idea, I'm not just bashing consoles, nor am I arguing which is better value out of PC or consoles, just pointing out how far behind the curve the new consoles are technologically even before their launch.
