Next Gen Consoles

I never got the fascination with Halo.

Well, what's not to get? You get to play a cyborg in the future fighting against aliens on a ring, while driving a cool rover or flying alien-scooters, shooting cool guns and experiencing a nice enough story.

I was more fascinated with Bungie's fps-games back then on mac Marathon 1 and Marathon 2, but still Halo also got me.

Xbox One: Microsoft’s UK game RRP set at £50
Xbox One games will come with a £49.99 RRP tag in the UK, Microsoft has confirmed.

OXM reports that the prices have been set over on Microsoft’s online store and will likely be reduced once the games hit retailers.

Bear in mind that the RRP is usually high and then brought down once games hit store shelves. It’s likely then, that Xbox One games will cost the same as new current Xbox 360 releases.

So far, the RRP applies to Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5 and Kinect Sports: Rivals.

Shopto already has Dead rising at £44.99.

EA have confirmed their RRP price for both consoles is £54.99, so would fully expect any EA game for less than £45 new to be a bargain.
Is this any different though when the 360 came out all games were £44.99 in the shops.

Bit disappointed though that the price for buying a digital copy is still going to be the scandalous prices they charge at the moment. £55 for Bioshock Infinite is a farce. Given how much MS and Sony want people to embrace digital downloading, they're not offering any incentives to do so at all.

Given shops are still selling Wii-U games for £50 I wouldn't expect those prices to drop either for the new consoles. Those prices are enough to make me consider the PC now.

Ive gone for Xbone and The Crew on day of release.

I was gonna get PS4 but like the above upon speaking to all my mates they have gone for new xbox so I have decdied to as well.

More back peddling as rumours say Xbox are going to allow self publishing and also add an option to turn your console into a debug mode.

Next up, no kinect?

It's odd really, as all their backtracking is "positive" for the actual console. However I get the feeling, due to them so easily doing it, that there is little in their way once good sales and a large enough userbase is sorted that they can turn everything back on again.

We are def going PS4 in my house. Most of the kids mates are getting one so makes sense for them to play with their mates. I'm easy either way. I have more real life mates on XB at the mo but they may change to PS anyway. I can always go back to playing with the PS groups I used to game with.

Hoping the price of digital games isn't too high though as I want to go digital. I'll probably pick up a 2nd console at some point and hopefully be able to get all the games onto the 2nd console and the logins in our house get access to the games at the same time. Still waiting for clarification on how all that works. Hopefully be able to get a digital bundle where we just get the codes to download the games. Don't mind games having a little premium on them if I can get access to them on 2 consoles. Cheaper than buying the games twice!

UPDATE #2: After the dust has settled on Microsoft's latest policy change, Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano has offered hints that all may not be quite as good as it seems.

"This is yet another example of them changing policy, but it sounding better than it is when the whole story is revealed," Provinciano told Engadget. "Make no mistake; while this is a great thing, it's again not the equivalent to what other platforms offer."

"On PS4, for example, developers can tap right into the system; use every bit of RAM and all of its power. Indies have access to everything that the AAA studios do, from platform support to development and release. The indication on Xbox One is that it's essentially XBLIG 2.0. Instead of XNA, it's Windows 8. Windows 8, which is already struggling to gain developer interest, will gain a boost from developers wishing to target the console. However, it won't be as full-fledged as published games on the system."

Microsoft exec Marc Whitten yesterday hyped up the importance of self-published Xbox One games by boasting of their access to various system features, including Kinect (not that surprising since it's an unremovable part of Xbox One), the cloud, and achievements.

The inclusion of achievements is interesting as Microsoft has traditionally kept a fairly strict structure to their distribution - Xbox Live Indie Games lacked them entirely. Their inclusion in self-published Xbox One titles suggests that Microsoft will retain a decent amount of control over their curation and certification.

By asking developers to create Windows 8 compatible versions - for Xbox One, tablets and PCs - the company would expand its current Windows 8 self-publishing structure while bolstering its threadbare Windows Store line-up.

Despite the changes Provinciano explained he was still uninterested in developing for Xbox One, due to his experiences while getting Retro City Rampage released on Xbox 360.

"After my experience working with them to release on Xbox 360, I have no interest in even buying an Xbox One, let alone developing for it. The policy changes are great, but they don't undo the experience I had. I'm not ready to forget what I went through. Working with Microsoft was the unhappiest point of my career. Policies are one thing, but developer relations are another.

"It's important to me that consumers don't see things as black and white. There are still strings attached to this policy change."

We'll hear the full details of Microsoft's plans at Gamescom next month.

I'm half expecting Microsoft to announce that Xbox One will play PS4 games. Because that's about the only thing they haven't changed to be more like their competition.

Deal breaker for me is the pad.

The PS3 pad is shit but if they make the PS4 pad more like the Xbox one I'd definitely look more in to what the PS4 has to offer.

I always thought if sony made two versions of the dualshock to cater for both groups they would clear up the competition
