Next Gen Consoles

Yes, I'll be following this with interest too.

I fully expect Sony to continue supporting racing wheels over USB. Given that the official Gran Turismo wheel is made by Thrustmaster and previously Logitech (both USB wheels), I think they would be crazy to potentially freeze-out hundreds of thousands of existing wheel owners.

I have less confidence in Microsoft. Seeing as their controllers are moving over to Wi-Fi, the rumours are that existing MS-compatible racing wheels may not work - unless they allow USB support, that is. My Fanatec CSR is the official Forza Motorsport wheel, introduced alongside Forza 4. If people who bought this wheel cannot use it with Forza 5 then that's a real kick in the teeth by MS. Personally it won't affect me as I'm into the PC racers these days, but I feel for those that could be stuck with an expensive wheel that is effectively useless on the XBone.

Spot on. I'm hoping that because PS4 has all the connectors needed for the wheel then it should be fine. If there are any issues then im hoping Fanatec can sort it out with a firmware update.

Who knows though regarding MS. After their very unpublicised shenanegins with existing surround sound gaming headsets not allowing in-game chat unless you buy a new officially 'licenced' Turtle Beach XBOne specific pair, well, it wouldn't surprise me if I ended up in the slightly ironic situation of playing Drive Club on PS4 with my Forza branded Fanatec wheel.

Ouch.. :OOOH:

I am proud as i only game on PC/notebook since my Playstation 2 collected dust . :SMUG:

It is hard to say something bad about microsoft since i have windows 7 HP in my system :P

There's a tremendous difference between publishers being able to develop their own DRM method (as they currently can on PS3/X360) and the idea of embedding a method into the very ethos of the console - both logistically and in principle. If a DRM setup does become unanimous across all titles over the course of the next 7 years (which is a possibility) then it will be measured against what MS has opted to do, and will be designed to overcome the problems MS are locked into. The chances it would end up being less desirable to the consumer are negligible.

Moreover, we've seen the extent of the reaction against MS's DRM. We've read the opposition in so many articles, interviews with various 1st and 3rd party execs. We've heard it too, in the Sony press conference. The most important indicator will be seeing the sales figures after 1 year or so, but those figures will have a profound effect on consumer rights in the long run, and the early adopters who provide those sales are the ones who have been most vocal. If a huge proportion of the PS4 ownership is going to have been motivated into their choice by concern for their rights, which publisher is going to happily throw themselves in front of the social media train we've seen running away with itself over the past few weeks? Especially when there's no concrete evidence that used sales damage publisher profits?

Agreed, it's not conclusive that the used games market cannibalises on overall profit of the publishers. It's too dynamic and interlinked to tell for sure. Sure Gamestop makes a billion dollar in profits out of trading selled games, and publishers think: "Why, I could have that profit, it's my games".

But then why don't the publishers build up a used-game-retail-chain or why don't they buy Gamestop and go from there?

I think publishers should be more relaxed about it and see Gamestop's profits as a reward for Gamestop's service, for offering and organizing a retail-chain for trading games.

Minus that profit for that retail-chain, all the rest of the money ends up in the hands of the publishers as new games-buyers buy more because they know they can sell on, and used game buyers are partly financing the new-games-buyer.

The much bigger question is the future availability of games, if games are only useable through licences, there is a danger for games to become obsolete in five years/ten years after we bought them, because the licence got changed or simply not supported anymore.

Discbased games have that assurance that even in say 10 or twenty years I could play these games out of nostalgy or for historic reasons or just to show my kids or grandkids what limited but charming games we were playing a long time ago.

These are concerns that need to be adressed when going all-digital, there should be a possibility to record digital games if we want to preserve them, and there should be ways to play these games independent of any server/internet-infrastructure behind it, just like it's possible to play old Atari/amiga-games now without the original companies being around anymore.

Reading IGN tonight, it looks like DayZ might only be coming to PS4, with the developers citing MS as creating obstacles preventing them from putting on their console. Again, ridiculous.

I wouldn't expect them to run them on high end pcs with better specs than the console will have. With reports of slowdown and frame rate issues in dead rising and titanfall, its makes me wonder if they have these issues on better specs than the console, will the final products be even worse?

Isn't that always the case, the launch will look better than reality, they'll definitely probably tone down the graphics from what your seeing, not by much but they always make them out to be better at first.

Who cares fanboy rhetoric and the game that was proved to run on a dev kit was Knack lol.
Most games are run on high end pcs because that what developers develop on nothing new here still running using the PS3 or Xbox emulation/development software on those PC's
Infamous second son, run on PS4 dev kit, but when i see Microsoft says look it's 1080p at 60fps, it's very funny...

Killzone anyone lol there's a classic example PS3/4 exclusive with fake graphics until around release time.
Plus remember most of these games aren't launch titles plenty of development left.
Most are spring or later and in game land spring means May June or later

You know a PS4/Xbox1 dev kit is a PC right it's not a console with caution tape wrapped around it.

Your pics are just fanboy propaganda pretty much showing an Xbox game being run from A dev kit with windows icons on it but at a time before they probably launched the Xbox 1 software on said dev kit.
Then the Sony screen which is also being run from an identicle PC running windows 8 but they already clicked on the Sony software making it look like its being run from a PS4.
I can garrantee that no actual Xboxes or PS4's were at E3 apart from the ones that were in locked cases for ppl to look at .

You can't guarantee that unless you work for someone connected with the event. Multiple devs have stated they ran on dev kits and the press have said behind closed doors they saw the Xbox games running and crashing on dev kits.

The windows game was now confirmed to be excite bike which is coming to Xbox but hasn't actually been started on, so they had the PC versions there which is what has crashed in the photos.

Killzone ran cgi and claimed it was gameplay. And the final game ended up looking much better in the end too which made it even more stupid. That's not really the same as what's claimed, running games at better spec than the console.

Who gives a shit what casing any of them are in?
Both consoles will be great when they are out. Get what you prefer and stop whining about it.

Casing as in the consoles look?

The issue that was raised (we don't know if its totally true or not) is that they demod on better specs than the console will have. So final games will probably look less 'wow'.
It's kinda similar to ea showing battlefield on pc specs when talking about the console versions and making no mention about it. BF3 on consoles was no where near the reveal trailers.

Just a shitty practise that people don't like.

I don't know, I think that's one conspiracy theory too many. Even if the specs of the PC are higher than the X1, I highly doubt the games being run are running with better graphics/performance than they will on the final console. I think this is being blown out of proportion.

That is pretty much it, Ubisoft have stated that AC4 was running on a PC with the same specs as what is in the PS4 so people would see what the game runs like on the next gen.

That's exactly my point all companies do it and always have. Weird that ppl bring it up now maybe it's his first E3

Nobody has a problem with using PC hardware which closely matches what the final console hardware will be, the issue is MS using an Nvidia gfx card for one and for two a gfx card which seems to be significantly higher spec than the AMD gfx card the Xbone will ship with.
