MMA thread

ONLY because the cunt is so fat people can't get him off them and get out of it. There's no skill in that. He was getting his arse handed to him standing up, if McSweeney had just continued doing that he would have won it.

You are way way off the mark if you think just his weight is the reason he is good on top

People in lower weight classes do the crucifix hold it which is very difficult to do btw and that cant be down to weight can it?

And you say Mcsweeney had him standing even though the takedown was due to him being rocked and then having to back up

Don't get me wrong i dont like the guy but saying he is winning just because of his weight aint right at all because his BJJ is very good but his attitude is awful. The other main reason this move worked is that his opponents were shit on the ground, when he comes to fighting proper fighters you wont be seeing it much at all

Nelson landed one punch because McSweeney was being a pratt and it rocked him, I'd hardly call that winning the stand up!

I see that the crucifix is a very technical move to pull off, but Nelson is already halfway there because of his weight. You could see McSweeney was trying to kick out and push off with all of his might but he just couldn't get the fat bell end off him!

I really hope Nelson gets totally pwnd by Brendan, but I just can't see it happening.

@ Bitter - Man, when I saw the Slice v Alexander match up I said exactly what you did to a friend of mine. Basically at this point in Kimbo's development he can only beat stand up guys. True that gave him a tough one...but he can just stick to what he knows. Shit he might even be able to learn some stuff he learned from Rampage lol.

I don't know why no one is excited to see Jon "Bones" Jones. He is one of the brightest talents they have slowly been building through undercards...including beating Bonner. If he beats the better known Hammil, it will probably launch "Bones" into being a real competiter at 205.

@ Tim7
Obviously we all hate "Big Country", but you are lacking to see things clearly in your rage. He is a veteran and smart fighter with a good chin. No he isn't good on his feet, but he can take a lot of punishment and stick with his game plan. McSweeney was winning on the feet...as he should have. But then when he got cocky he got rocked by a punch. In his daze he got taken down, and was completely outmatched on the ground. Nelson is a fat bastard, but sometimes you gotta have heels in this sport. Nelson, Koscheck, Hardy, Ortiz... It makes you want to watch so you can see them get their face smashed.

McSweeney is shite, hope Schoonover kills him.

On a sidenote, for all you MMA fans, right now live on a stream msomewhere is the K1 world grand prix final. A Little different but quality nonetheless.

The 8 best kickboxers (including Alastair Overeem the Strikeforce HW Champ, and undoubtedly Fedors biggest threat) square off in quarters, semis and final.

If you like your crazy striking, and sick ko's, I would recommend looking for it in all the "usual places" later today/tomorrow. it is in HD in the USA at the mo, so should be some good links later on.

Personally I haven't heard of Jon Jones, I'm still learning a lot about MMA.

Jones is the future of the division.

Got the longest reach in the UFC, and is thoroughly entertaining. Is a wrestler, and does crazy suplexes and judo throws. His striking is sick. Spinning back fists, jumping knees, he's like out of Tekken. He is only 21/22 years old, and is now with the best trainer in MMA, Greg Jackson.

Dan Hardy isn't a heel! He's right up there with Bisping as best in the UK IMO.

Why does Dana White hate Mazzagatti?!

Why does Dana White hate Mazzagatti?!

He is a heel, as the US audience hate him, and he plays off it. He's up there with Daley and Bisping, and arguably Hathaway and Etim as the UK's best no question.

Dana hates Mazzagatti as he is a fucking dreadful referee who consistently makes mistakes, and stops fights way too early. The real beef (I think) though stems from his interference in Mir vs Lesnar I when Brock was pounding Mir and struck once or twice the back of his head. Mazzagatti stood them up, without verbally warning Lesnar first, and deducted a point. 30 seconds later Brock was tapping.

Lesnar hates Mazzagatti because of this, and dana got on the Mazzagatti bandwagon after a few more controversial calls. Not as bad as the big lump Mirgliaotta or the dreadfully slow offciating from Josh Thompson in the Big baby vs Schaub semi-final. Yves Lavigne has also made mistakes.

The only ones who dont it seems are Big john mccarthy, herb dean and mario yamasaki. clearly the best 3 refs

Dan Hardy is definately a heel, no question about it.

Jones sounds like a good watch, the Tekken description sounds interesting

You cant help but like Bones Jones, he's very entertaining. Also you may/may not be aware as i know you're going through the TUFs from what you said, but Matt Hammils deaf, and its phenomenal how well he has done. His wife is gorgeous as well, he's a really courageous guy, with everyones respect. Tito was his coach on TUF and did an excellent job.

Aye, I've watched TUF S03 and Hamill was quality. Got a lot of respect for him and I haven't seen him fight in the UFC itself yet so hoping he does well tonight.

Rampage coming back apparently

I wanted to let my fans know that I'm going to come back to the UFC & finish my contract. Not because the haters are talking shit about me being scared of Rashad or Titties or anybody else. I'm coming back for my fans & to shut Rashad's mouth up & shut Dana's mouth up. Then after that I'm going back to doing movies & I might do a boxing match once a year just to stay in shape. Hate on dis!

http://www.cagepotato.com/hate-haters-rampage-jackson-coming-back-shut-rashad

@ Rampage - That's good. Hope he fights Rashad, makes up with Dana...and continues to fight. He is just too damn good to retire in his prime.

@ vondave - Overeem is the best challenger in Strikeforce no doubt. But I don't think he is much of a challenge to Fedor. But to be fair I think a healthy Brock might have been the best challenge due to size and wrestling. Honestly, a sharp Nog would still probably be his best opponent.

@ Tim7 - How can you say Hardy isn't a heel. Just because you like him doesn't mean he isn't trying to be the bad guy. I think heels are great for the sport, especially when they are talented like Hardy is.

Mazagatti has sucked for YEARS!! He stood out to me a while back as the most passive ref I'd ever seen. He almost let people die  Then he adjusted and was stopping matches too quickly. He just isn't a good ref...no doubt. And herb dean is the best UFC ref, but far from perfect. McCarthy might have been the all time best.

TUF Finale:

Lightweight bout: Mark Bocek vs. Joe Brammer
I was kind of expecting crazy shit from Brammer given his decipline(Bruce Lee's). But Bocek showed his quality as a solid fighter.

Welterweight bout: John Howard vs. Dennis Hallman
Not Aired...but looks like a KO in the final 5 sec

Light Heavyweight bout: Brian Stann vs. Rodney Wallace
Not Aired

Heavyweight bout: Jon Madsen vs. Justin Wren
Not Aired...but a surprising and disappointing result

Heavyweight bout: Darrill Schoonover vs. James McSweeney
Good fight, and McSweeney looked good. I was routing against him slightly, but he fought a really good fight.

Heavyweight bout: Marcus Jones vs. Matt Mitrione
Boo...no one wanted to see "Big Baby" gas keep his hands down and get knocked out. Wish he could have found a way to finish when he had him on the ground in the 1st.

Lightweight bout: Frank Edgar vs. Matt Veach
I was about to say..."Fight of the Night", but then I checked...and it WAS rightfully awarded fight of the night. Veach looked great, and Edgar looked class. Wish he would drop down to 145 and take on Faber, Brown, Garcia and of course Aldo. But he fights well at 155...just too small to be a real contender.

Catchweight (215 lb) bout: Kimbo Slice vs. Houston Alexander
Not the fight anyone expected. Was more like Dancing with the Stars :P But I must say it was the most tense I've been watching a fight in a long time (outside the last Fedor fight). I knew it was important for the UFC for Kimbo to win, and I just didn't know where the judges were gonna go after the 1st round of dancing and leg kicks by Houston. The little action in the 1st was entertaining. The 2nd round was a little better. What a SLAM by Kimbo. I jumped out of my seat. And then his bombs from the top...very surprised it didn't end there. 3rd round was a gas fest...but really glad Kimbo won the decision, cause I could have seen 1st or 3rd going either way.

Light Heavyweight bout: Matt Hamill vs. Jon Jones
I don't think anyone will ask who Jon Jones is now. Holy Shit!! He is more awesome than I thought he was. What an amazing performance. Obviously we are all disappointed in how it ended, but what dominance. So Hammel injured his arm in the fight...anyone know when? The only question is how could Jones finish him in the mount with a 1 armed man. I mean Jones was throwing everything at him...obviously even 12 to 6 elbows. I'm definitely a bigger fan of Jones now, and I hope Hammel can get healthy, and fight someone I don't like...so I can route for him again. BTW...Hammel totally should have beaten Bisping in that decision ways back. I just remembered that.

Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Brendan Schaub
I don't know what happened but right before the fight and intros began I kind of found myself routing for THE FAT MAN. I just thought that his impact in the Heavyweight division(that needs impact fighters) would be more impactful than Schaub who would get lost in the shuffle and they'd have to build him up. Now Schaub can develop, and Nelson can fight guys like Nog. Win for us. Yes he is a douche...but a mighty good character and heel for the sport. Any time a guy comes out to Weird Al's "Fat"... and then rubs his belly after the win...you gotta laugh. Awesome performance btw. Schaub succeeded where everyone else failed in that crucifix....but he got knocked out by the grizzly vet. Plus, Nelson probably would have wanted a large chunk of change to continue fighting in the UFC. Because he could have used this exposure to headline other shows for more money. That would be funny if the UFC signed Kimbo to a bigger contract than Nelson

Overall:
For a free show...I'm very happy. Not all the results I wanted, but I was entertained for 3+ hours. I do think Alexander will need a talking to with that strategy.

so they are booking Liddell vs Ortis III. Who the Fcuk cares about this fight? Randy vs Coleman also remember so two fights featuring four guys who are all finished.

Is this UFC or WCW? :)

 It definitely feels like the UFC pre Griffin vs Bonner and the Pride infusion of talent. Dana didn't even look excited to announce the news. I thought there was a better chance at it being Ortiz v. Griffin III (which I still wasn't looking forward to). The only good thing is that Ortiz and Liddell were both good coaches.

Kimbo looks really solid
however he also looks a bit old now, at 35 I don't see too many years for him

But if he connects, man, he's so powerful

It is the perfect fight for Liddell. Ortiz has no head movement, cannot punch, and can only fight one way.

This should be the same result as the last two fights.

Not how I hoped the event would go, with Schoonover, Big Baby, Hamill and Schaub all losing. Okay, Hamill technically won (how does a point deduction turn to DQ anyway) but he was clearly dominated by the impressive Jones.

Gutted that Nelson won, what does he bring to the UFC besides his weight? I can't see him improving and being able to take on the better heavyweights and I reckon Dana is gutted he has to keep Nelson now.

Big Baby really needs to work on his stand-up. His stance and punches just don't seem right and he leaves himself completely exposed and it proved his downfall tonight. He could be a quality fighter with a bit more training.

Well done to Kimbo as well, really pleased he won. I kept hearing Alexander was "violent" and to see him dancing around the cage constantly pissed me off. Not sure if Kimbo's knee will hold up and whether he'll be able to have a career in MMA really as everyone will target that and it's going to severely weaken with each fight. Good luck to him though and I hope he goes on and does well.

Not overly impressed with Lidell and Ortiz as coaches. I don't mind either, Ortiz was a good coach in the past. But I wanted to see two new coaches that I haven't seen before. Underwhelming announcement really.

TUF Finale

Wow, fair play to Roy Nelson, that was one hell of a punch :CONFUSE:. Brendan was out cold and then didn't know where he was for a good minute or so. I can now see he does have a very good ground game (aided by his weight), and I think could be interesting to see who he fights and how he does in the UFC.

McSweeney looked good, devastating knees at the end of his fight.

Shame to see Mitrione win as he's a knobhead, but Marcus Jones needs a hell of a lot of work on his stand up, as Dags said, he just didn't look quite right.

Bones Jones looked awesome, I've never seen someone so offensive in full mount! He just didn't stop. Again, as Dags said, how did it go from point deduction to a DQ?

From reading MMAJunkie, Mazzagatti looked at the video replay and saw that two illegal 12-to-6 elbows were responsible for the damage to Hamill, and he was DQ'd for that. Apparantly the first time a video replay has been used like this in MMA history.

Have a listen to the commentary again, something to do with some from the Nevada Commission seeing someone break ice or something with that move? Something like that anyway.

If you think Nelson adds nothing to the division you're very wrong. He's very talented. His weight keeps his centre of gravity low, (not dissimilar to say Fedor as a comparison) and means he has KO power. Has a ju-jitsu black-belt from Renzo Gracie too.

He was clearly alot better than everyone else in the house, and I look forward to seeing him in the HW division. Never troubled in any fight, and won all pretty easily.

He wont be top 5, but top 10 I would think.

Now roll on next week, and the fight of the year. Putting money on BJ and Kongo. Hope we never have to see Mir again.

Was it only me who guessed who the next coaches were before it was announced?

I saw it a mile off

And all its for the PPV money nothing else

I thought it was Tito as I spotted that head from a mile off in the audience, and I feared it would be Forrest as they had discussed it recently. Dont want to see that again in a hurry.

Its one of few fights Chuck can win.
