MMA thread

the strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem fought in the k1 final 8. Badr Hari said he will be ready with him in less than 3 minutes.
here is the result:

Thats 1 win each so K-1 can book a 3rd fight down the line. Overeem wants a 3rd fight under MMA rules on NYE but no way that is gonna happen. K-1 should really be more popular than it is in the west.

As Dan Henderson's free-agent flirtations with both Strikeforce and the UFC continued without resolution for the last few months, many seemed torn about whether the veteran would eventually return to the UFC.

UFC President Dana White, however, was not one of those people. Telling FanHouse that Henderson's decision-making process forced him to change negotiating strategy and that he ultimately pushed Henderson into signing with Strikeforce, White made it clear that losing the accomplished star was not a big blow to his organization.

"He's happy, but the reality is that I pushed him into signing that deal," White told FanHouse. "I told people over the weekend that he'd sign within the next week."

White says that while he originally entered negotiations in good faith, after three or four meetings with Henderson and his management, he realized it was unlikely the two sides would come to terms. Eventually, he lowered his original offer, effectively forcing Henderson's hand in signing with Strikeforce.

"I wanted him to s**t or get off the pot," he said. "He was in this limbo forever, and he needed more motivation to make a decision.

"Let me ask you a question," he continued. "Do you think that there's any guy we can't get that I want? Other than Fedor [Emelianenko]? So far, he's been the one guy we can't get. But everyone else that we've wanted, we got. If I wanted Dan Henderson, I could've signed him."

Henderson (25-7) became a free agent after his UFC 100 win over Michael Bisping in July. Despite the fact that Henderson is a former PRIDE champion and took part in high-profile UFC bouts with Anderson Silva, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rich Franklin, White says that his addition will actually hurt Strikeforce.

"For the money he wanted, he's not worth it," he said. "He's not a big pay-per-view star, he's not a big attraction, and he's not going to sell out arenas. He wants way too much and he doesn't bring anything to the table."

Although he added there are no hard feelings between the UFC and Henderson, White virtually closed the door on a potential return in the future, saying Henderson's age (39) would probably work against that.

He was not as kind with Strikeforce, saying it was another move that would lead to more problems for the upstart organization.

"Nothing's going to help Strikeforce," he said. "They have too many fighters under contract and not enough events. They can't keep some of their obligations to fighters already. Either they're going to start breaching contracts or paying fighters not to fight. It'll take a lot more than one guy to help them. Their whole business model is f****d. They're coming after UFC? Yeah, OK.

"I could care less," he continued. "Here's the reality: If I wanted him, he'd be in the UFC. It's not like, 'F***, Strikeforce beat me out.' He's been a free agent for a long time. If I wanted him, I would have signed him by now."

well Mirko CroCop was a k1 fighter and he is doing very well on mma rules so I believe that k1 fighters can fight aswell on mma rules. but I don't think there will be a k1 fighter on the dynamite event who wants to fight on mma rules.

K-1 World Grand Prix 2009

Wow, really good event :)). The Aussie commentator is absolutely brilliant! :LMAO:.

Some great KOs, that knee from Overeem was DEVASTATING . Totally floored the other guy and instantly KOd him. Hari had a great first two rounds, but pretty much gassed himself against Schilt in the final, the first knockdown was just a jab! But he wasn't expecting it and Schilt's jabs are so powerful that Hari just couldn't stay standing. Lovely headkick for the 2nd and nice body kick for the third.

Yeah, good event, I would definitely watch more in the future :)).

After watching that i cant wait for Penn vs Sanchez, it will be a fucking brawl if each of there previous fights are anything to go by

BJ is too smart to get in a brawl. He'll pick him apart, and finish him within 2/3 rounds IMO

Everyone should watch the countdown video for the "Yes Cartwheel!"

I can't remember BJ up against and aggressive fighter like Diego. I think Diego can bring the pressure for the full 5 rounds. True BJ has improved in his conditioning, but he hasn't been on the defense for a full 5 rounds. If Diego comes out timid and giving a lot of respect I don't think he has a chance. I'm going underdog in this one. Remember Diego has awesome ground and pound and he has been in a battle with Guida. I think Diego ground and pound stoppage 4th round. This IMO is a "face vs face" fight that the UFC loves to do, and its just not as fun. You have the majority routing for BJ because he is awesome, and a good amount of people that are routing for the TUF 1 champ. But for a guy they have been building up for years, you'd hope that he would be a fan favorite at this point. Maybe he is just too weird

"Feel your legs burning in the third round. Feel your lungs gasping for air but you don't get no oxygen!" - Diego Sanchez

Even though I hate to put my heart aside and forget about my personal feelings, my inner passion, my excitement, the hype for the fight... I have to say, I see BJ winning this fight. I personally know and look up to humble people, guys like Wanderlei Silva, Randy Couture, Sean Sherk, Forrest Griffin... you know, HUMBLE people. Now, as much as I know BJ, I think the GSP fight thought him a lesson. I think he's been seriously training know, so it's going to be hard to find BJ unprepared, since he doesn't has the God complex anymore.

BJ vs Diego Sanchez
Regarding BJ Penn, do I have something against BJ? Absolutely not. When I met him in Long Beach, CA, he was a very funny guy, fooling around with Urijah, and at the time I thought he was the coolest man I've met in a while.

However, technically speaking, every time BJ fights, I know that he's getting better. He's not in the same level as Anderson Silva or GSP, but he's in the mix. He's definitively going to retire as one of the best martial artists to ever live. so with this athlete as his opponent, I just don't see Diego Sanchez winning this fight.

Diego, as good as he is, his stand up was pretty basic a few years ago. Let's watch the Koscheck fight, and now compare Koscheck boxing to to BJ's, there is no comparison.

If Diego can pull out a win, it would be awesome, as I'm still waiting for the original Ultimate Fighter to get the gold he deserves. Forrest already got it, now it's Diego's time :) (just come with a master plan, and please, don't try to take him down like GSP, because you're not GSP)

The best chance for Diego is a solid knee to the chin, with devastating elbows and a few good punches to put him away. BJ also eats most the kicks that he receives, so if Diego can hurt BJs knees/legs (remember the Forrest Griffin vs Rampage Jackson fight), then he might find openings in the later rounds (where Diego's cardio will be a big advantage)

However, if the fight goes to the ground, sooner or later BJ will submit him, so I really hope Diego keeps the fight away from the ground.

I don't remember being so excited for a fight in a long long time, maybe Diego can defeat BJ, let's hope so :)

Prediction: BJ winning by TKO or submission

Congo vs Frank Mir
I really like Congo attitude, for sure, he has the heart and soul of a true warrior, he just never gives up. Even though he's lost and he has a really really bad ground game, hey, he's there, trying to improve, and he has a very good standing game. However, let's face it. Even though Congo has a devastating power in his hands, this is MMA.

So, if Congo get's lucky and connects, the fight is over, but I really think Frank Mir is more prepared. You can say that BJ is a bad fighter because he lost to GSP, or that Frank Mir is out of his prime because he lost against Brock. But if you say that, then you know nothing about MMA. You cannot judge a fighter by watching his worst performance, because BJ lost to GSP, not because BJ is bad, but because GSP is a monster.
Same with Frank Mir, as the video says, Brock did his homework and he is the champion for a reason.

So, if you see all the good fights that Frank Mir had, then you'll realize he's in the heavyweight mix. However, Frank biggest enemy is Frank. He believes he is better than everybody else, even though he has been through defeat, pain, agony... he still believes he's just in another level.

One of the reason most fighters fail, is the complex, the false sense of security that a few wins give you. In Martial Arts, the key to be a good fighter is respecting your opponent, he is lethal, so you must show him respect. Now, after watching all the mockery that Frank makes, he is putting him self in danger, in every single fight. People really want to hurt him, finish him, and let's face it. Brock really tried to shut him up. When Brock fought Randy, Brock was just trying to win. When Brock fought Mir, Brock was trying to injure Frank permanently.

So, I really think Frank, is a good funny/cocky character, a cool persona that has his own way of approaching fighters. However, as cocky as he is, I don't see a great future for him. Anger can not be a motivation for anything
"Only losers think in what if's and could have beens" - Frank Mir.
Ha ha, as Frank said, I would hate to see Frank follow that path. Some day, he will ask himself "what if I showed respect to my opponents? I wouldn't be injured for life now?"

Will Frank go through that? I certainly hope not, but let's face it, in a sport as dangerous as MMA, you don't need extra enemies and anger towards you. Be a cool guy, be an Anderson Silva, don't put a big target on your face that says "Please retire me because I'm too annoying"

So, as much as I like Frank, I really hope he can reach his true potential. The guy is a fantastic fighter, and I think he has a great, great future ahead of him. However, I just wish he could have a reality check, a change of heart, and that he could add a little bit of humbleness to his cool persona. That would be awesome

Prediction: Congo's ground game has so many holes, Frank Mir will find an opening and submit him

and I will also like to add Youtube video tag, if possible

we should watch the countdown for every fight

sanchez will win this fight imo..

looking forward to it

if sanchez has good odds i am betting on him winning...

his boxing should be more improved as he has been training with very good boxers, Bj's boxing has always been an advantage to him, his takedown defence(his flexibility) and ground game

i personally think sanchez is more exciting (i am rooting for him) he is well rounded, goes 100% - is very good on his feet and on the ground

interesting match up, with sanchez out working BJ while still having quality

hope that is the way it goes

I want Sanchez to win too
but BJs stand up is world class

I've only seen GPS outbox him

Sanchez needs to take him to the 4th and 5th round

bj's stand up i.e boxing is very good but that is complimented with his take down defence

sanchez is well rounded and i feel he can push and mix it up, not sure how successful he can be but i feel he has the tools to atleast give it a good go (got a good chance)

GSP is something else :APPLAUD:

Sanchez to win by guillotine in the 2nd round :TU:.

Agree with that too, unless Kongo tags him when they are standing it will be Mir's fight.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Strikeforce-Lands-Lashley-Jan-30-Debut-Booked-21466

Former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar and unbeaten heavyweight mixed martial arts prospect Bobby Lashley has agreed to a multi-year contract with Strikeforce, the promotion announced on Thursday.

Lashley, 33, will debut on Jan. 30 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. No opponent was named.

“I’m looking forward to fighting for Strikeforce and challenging myself by taking on some of the top heavyweights in MMA,” Lashley said in a release.

Undefeated in four professional appearances, Lashley last competed in June, when he smashed through Bob Sapp at a Fight Force International show in Biloxi, Miss. A decorated collegian, he was a three-time NAIA national champion at 177 pounds and a four-time All-American. Lashley was also a two-time Armed Forces champion and a silver medalist at the 2002 World Military Wrestling Championships.

Lashley, affiliated with American Top Team, joins Nick Diaz, Strikeforce women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker on the Jan. 30 lineup for Strikeforce.

Has anyone ever watched the Worlds Strongest Man tournaments on TV?

If you have you will recognise former winner Mariusz Pudzianowski who is going into MMA and making his debut this weekend

Maybe he will throw the guy out of the cage for a instant win
