Microsoft Xbox 360

I personally don't understand it from a business perspective. I mean surely it is costing MS more money to manufacture 3 different SKU's than it would be to just create 1? They should have used this as the opportunity to get rid of the gimped Core system AND the Premium system and start manufacturing the Elite. Make the Elite £279, which they could subsidise due to stopping the production of the Core/Premium, and make the Elite THE only SKU available at retail.

In its current form it is obvious that MS are not aiming this at people who already have a 360. They are aiming it at people who are sitting on the fence regarding a PS3 or 360, this gives them another option.

totally agree.

Whats messed up about this is that the console hasnt improved things like the machine being extremely loud when on, and the fact the power block is still external. Also whats with the 120gb hard drive costing $180?! Shocking price.

Its gonna be interesting to see who buys the Elite.

Are both of those points definitely confirmed? Because I didn't think of that before. No way would I spend out on something I already have for one extra port. It's like buying two of the same television, both exactly the same, except that one has an extra HDMI port. If you go to that length for the sake of a slightly improved picture (I've seen VGA and HDMI, and the difference really isn't that great if you play from a sensible distance away), then you're mad and I wish I had as much money as you.

It's very suspicious that they haven't even looked at fixing those issues you've mentioned. God, I hope the whole thing turns out to be an early April Fool's.
 
The machine is identical except HDMI and the larger HDD. I imagine it will run cooler, but it doesn't have the new 65nm chip that IBM are producing. As to whether it is quieter, I doubt it.
 
there is no way i am getting it unless it is released in Japan and is cheap which it should be. My 360 was only £160. The PS3 60GB version is available for like £320 in Japan so MS Japan will price this at £230 - £250 max if released in Japan.

not sure if MS will bother with japanese release though.

oh and the 120GB HD price is a rip off! MS are seriously taking the piss with this. and how the fcuk can the new machine not have wi-fi built in. MS are damn cheeky!

I would rather buy a 20GB Japanese PS3 for £250 and get myself an external 100GB HD for like £50.

MS are making a mistake releasing this machine.

I'm pleased it doesn't have WiFi built in. Something like that should definitely be an optional thing IMO.

I don't want to have to pay extra money for a console which has stuff I don't need. I wouldn't use WiFi

WTF! There should of been Wi-Fi with no extra cost. come on man, the DS, PSP, PDA's and some Mobile phones have built in Wi-Fi.

MS have got no excuse for this and charging £50 for an adaptor is taking the piss!
 
WiFi has almost become a standard - especially as most people don't want to have wires all over their homes. Many may occasionally want to move the console from upstairs to downstairs to play on the bigger screen.

I agree that hardcore gamers perhaps won't use wireless because of the lag (although I haven't experienced it) but there is the network port for that anyway :)

The wifi adapter costs nearly as much as a DS(!). If it was £15-20, it wouldn't be much of an issue

Yeah but you are not comparing the same product set. The DS/PSP etc are handhelds and having an ethernet port on it wouldn't really work :).

I completely agree with flawless, wi-fi isn't used by most gamers at the moment, not home console users. I imagine most PS3 users are still using a wired connection even though wi-fi is built in, I know I would.

trust for me, having no wireless adaptor for the 360 is a pain as my router is downstairs so i can only play xbox live when my mum is out or asleep. I not gonna pay £50 - £60 for something everyone else offers for free.

like you said if the price was £15 - £20 it wouldnt be so bad.
 
:shock: What the hell is this now, i was thinking about a april joke and now this!!! a 360 in Black and its not so loud as my 2 month old "machine"??? Go to Hell Microsoft, i have preferd your console and now you speed in my face bringing aout this "Elite version"??? why the hell you havent bring out the console from the beginning in this colour and with all the "NEW" stuff???

I am glad that i have payed 299€ for my console with 2 wirelles controlles and PGR and kameo(brand new on media markt store)! Its best price in German market for a Next gen Machine!So i think MS is selling out the white modell????!!! or what???

It will be interesting, today i got my new VT3 and its great, people in German superstores are buing the 360 for 299, only to get VT3!because PS3 costs 600€, so i can play VT for 358€, a PS3 with same Game(and Graphics) costs 659€! And now after the PS3 release most of my friends go for a X-box360, cheaper, good games,(for the momment) same Graphics, not any longer PS3 exclusive shit .....and so on!
Here in Germany no one except hardcore gamers know about the "elite", i think MS will loose a lot of fans! everyone things now that he has a "White-core-cheap-Modell" of the 360??? inst it so????

They don't offer it for free though, its included in the overall price and what not I'm sure. Just like, if the Elite had WiFi built in I'm guessing it would push the price up

agreed, in fact didnt sony create a breakdown of the cost of the ps3 a while back including things such as wifi adaptor and bluray drive?
 
Do you mean in terms of demos and content, or the video marketplace? Cause I thought we had pretty much the same content available.

The video marketplace is a different kettle of fish
 
Are you sure that works still? I heard MS will be stopping that/have stopped this, they check IPs or something now.
 
I've just ordered my premium Xbox 360, with Gears of War AND Uefa Champions League for £280.

Now I hear this elite version is coming out, doh! But to be honest, I doubt I will need the 120gb hard-drive or even the HDMI, as my TV is shite anyway. I don't want to wait till the end of the month either.

Anyway, for those that have their Xbox hooked up to the net, is it just simply a case of etherneting it to my Router? It also has inbuilt WLAN, am I correct?

The PS3 is just far too expensive for me right now, but I will probably get it later this year, maybe at Chimbo when the prices come down.

yeah just enthernet cable into your router. wireless adaptor will cost you £60 (rip off)

Correct you just plug it in, although your router does have to have DHCP enabled, otherwise you will have to configure a static address. None of the Xbox360 SKU's (Core, Premium, Elite) have Wi-Fi connectivity to play on Live, they only use Wireless for the controllers and the headset.

I have not heard of one person who has had there accounts stopped. as long as you do no try and use your UK debit card you will be fine. I have a US, UK and Japanese Account.
