Microsoft Xbox 360

It is basically a myth that most Xboxes break because of over heating its acttually terrible soldering on the mother board that causes the unit to fail.
So if you get the dreaded 3 lights wrap your console with a towel and allow it to over heat it re conects the soldering and when it cools down switch it back on and it might work like mine.

Its only a temporary measure i believe tho.

right im not the brightest when it comes computer stuff

and I dont own a router, can anybody recommend a router for me, so I can go on Live etc

and i will need to ethernet cable im guessing, from reading above (any in particular?)

Buy a Netgear DG834G or Netgear DG834GT - made by a great company, reliable and reasonably cheap. Everyone who's bought a router for their 360 that I know have bought a Netgear router, including people who have no idea when it comes to PCs, and they are by far the easiest to get working (if you follow the instructions).

At PC World, the DG834G is £62 and the DG834GT is £80 (both online prices). DG834G is the earlier model, DG834GT is later (supports faster speeds) and so is the better one - but I use the DG834G (with the latest firmware upgrade) and it works just as well. It just depends on how much money you want to spend.

You should find that the above routers come with the required cable - if not, you just ask at your local PC shop for a standard ethernet cable (of the length you require).

Netgear isn't all that dependable, but you never know

I've had two routers from them, both the £80 GT versions

the first one was horrible, didn't work for longer than five minutes at a time, and because my dad is a stubborn bastard, it took us a very, very long time to get a new one

we got a second GT, and it's worked perfectly, so just be hopeful you get a good one

I've got six friends (including me that's seven) and all seven have worked perfectly - apart from one guy who had his explode in a lightning storm...

It's his own fault for living in Wales. Lightning struck really, really close to the house and zapped the phone lines. All of the phones blew, the router and the ethernet port on the computer (plus the USB ports for some reason). Thank God it was unplugged from the XBOX 360 (he took it out that night because he was fed up of getting a million messages asking him for a game of Gears Of War - if nobody had been messaging him then who knows what would have happened to the 360).

I have the DG834G :)
Very good, but the wireless range isn't the best... or it might be my walls...

YEAH, i had a netgear that went kaboom due to a summer storm. Maybe its a netgear thing, as my current safecom router doesn't even loose connectivity during storms.

The big brand names aren't always the best. I've had a linksys, that was rubbish, and a netgear. But if you're not technically minded, then its probably best, as those companies offer the better support.

I've cancelled my 360 order, I will wait for payday and the elite version.

People have to remember that the Elite was made for IPTV and to be used with the HDDVD player. If you're not gonna have any of those, dont bother with it.

I was going to come in here before and say, I've got the normal 360, I've played God-knows how many games (over 20, possibly 30) and I've got 12gb of hard-drive space left. Chuck five massive demos on there and I've got 7gb left. Chuck a few hundred songs on there and I've got 5gb left - which is enough room for hundreds upon hundreds of different game-saves. And that's without deleting the demos you don't play any longer.

If you're happy with your television channels, and you don't care whether you use component, VGA or HDMI (and those last two are pretty similar anyway, unless you're using a MASSIVE television), then I don't see any reason for getting this Elite package.

It seems like a desperate attempt to get this IPTV stuff off the ground, and I don't know whether Microsoft are making a big mistake or a big leap forward. I would suspect it's the former, but time will tell...

If I decide to get an Xbox it will be an Elite. I don't have a TV to handle it, but it would be future proofing somewhat in case I get one that can. Plus, I like the colour. :)

Even if I did have the Elite, I'd still be using the VGA port cuz other than the X360, I dont have anything else that could use it. So why waste a HDMI port that could be used up by something else?

Gears of War 'Annex' update, out now!

In Annex, gamers seize victory by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map contains two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team's score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.

And while defending their objectives against the onslaught of Xbox LIVE opponents, gamers may notice the following minor adjustments to "Gears of War":

* VGA Cable Support: Monitor resolution widths greater than or equal to 1280 now render as letterbox. In particular VGA users running at 1280x1024 will now see the game in full 720p (1280x720) resolution in letterboxed form.
* Adjusted Assassination Multiplayer Gametype: Leader no longer has to unlock weapons and now has to be executed to die.
* Adjusted Boomshot: Splash damage to be more effective rendering targets down-but-not-out
* Adjusted Hammer of Dawn: Aiming will be more forgiving of moving targets
* Adjusted Roadie Run: Reduced frequency of accidently grabbing cover while running
* Kill Message Ticker: Ticker can now be seen while down-but-not-out and spectating
* General: Addressed a number of possible exploits in multiplayer

I hope the IPTV is good in Europe/UK. If they can sign deals with big names, then we could see a new revolution!

There are three music packs on marketplace for GH2. I think they are all from GH1 and cost 500 M$ points for each pack.

I was under the impression that the Elite will be priced at around the same mark that the current premium is. Whilst the premium will obviously get a price cut.

£300?

I personally think £350-£380

All it adds is a hdmi port. May as well by the 120gb hard drive seperate.

Think Rocky was talking about the Guitar Hero II song DL's rather than the Elite pricing. It hasnt even been announced for Europe yet, so no pricepoint has been released nor date.

One happy note, the Gears Annex DL is free!!!!! WOOOOOTTTTTT!!!!!! I know the guys from Epic wanted it to be free, but I also know how much MS want microtransactions, and that the whole MS and Epic relationship has been more than a little strained recently, but well done Epic for sticking to what they wanted, tis great, and a big boost for the DLC, back in the old XB days there were more free things than things you had to pay for, Ubisoft should take note.

Agree completely, what Epic have said from the start is that, as a thank you to the GoW community, they wanted all their stuff to be free and we should all thank them for not doing an Oblivion (i.e. "shiny outfit for the main characters, £5 please, you know you want it"). I bought every car pack available for PGR3, only to use 5% of them and sell the game shortly afterwards. I won't be buying anything from Marketplace again, or from any future concept on a different console, no way in hell.

But yeah, Epic are great and they deserve credit for this. (Although I have to say I don't think much of the new game-mode in all honesty! :eh:)

I'll have to have a few more games on it, but I wasn't too impressed initially. All I got to see was a room with a blue flashy thing in it, and every time I got anywhere near it, there were three guys waiting to shoot me and two guys - well, kids - shouting "OH MY FUCKING GOD YOU IDIOT" down my ear.

I will try it again but I'd better not fall in love with it, because it's up on eBay at the moment to get me a few extra quid. :eh:

Its brilliant when you have a tight game but its so frustrating when you start a game and your team is filled with either really shit players or people who dont understand the new mode.
Atleast in the modes you try to take the people out yourself and put up a good fight but in Annex its almost impossible to win if your team is shit.
