Not sure about the squad, I think it's has gone down a peg. Liverpool's problem was that when they missed 1st team players they dropped down too much overal, Utd look the same atm. There's no-one in the squad that can come off the bench and make a difference regulary imo. I consider Owen someone to come on when you are dominating already to get that single touch for a goal. Not to tactically change a match. And who can come in for other players being rested: Rooney - Macheda / Berbatov - Welbeck. Thats so much weaker then last season when you could use atleast one of those and/or Tevez before even needing the young lads. Even the first team, with Nani and "Hargreaves" looks weak. Valencia is still an unknown, Liverpool have signed enough players that looked good for their teams only to not make a step up or look ordinary with better players around. We will have to see if the regulars can cope whilst the others make the step up.

I agree with that. Indeed most United fans laud over Liverpool fans with the endless transfer record talk by pointing out that Fergie spends a lot, but on a small number of players, whereas Rafa gambles a bit more. Role reversals eh...

If it's true we're getting Obertan for only £3m then that is a fucking bargain. I know he's only young and nobody has seen too much of him but he's highly rated and doing well for the national youth teams so that's really not bad at all. If you consider players like Tosic and Ljajic cost us around £7m it's a really good deal.

Xabi Alonso is world class without a doubt...you would feel stupid saying he isnt.Liverpool would be totally exposed without Alonso and Mascherano in the team.

Carrick is a great player but not on the same level as Alonso I think,maybe just a step behind.

Agree

Think Carrick is a very good player. He's up there with the likes of Lucho, D'Agostino, Ledesma etc. Just think Xabi's a class above though. He was the best midfielder in England, and one of the best in Europe. The only player who's better than him is Pirlo.

If its true what ThomasGOAL was saying about him not developing much in the last 3 years then we'll have some work to do on him. Or else we'll have another Nani on our hands.

I'd put Xavi,Alonso,Carrick and Pirlo in the same bracket.They are deep lying playmakers with astute reading of the game...You dont make a player like that...I bet its rare to find a young kid who will be like...hey,I wanna play just like Pirlo,sit back,do the dirty job at times and spray passes throughout the field,the whole game...Its too technical to understand.Kids nowadays would wanna be fancy like Cristiano Ronaldo...

I used to play DMF when young, so I love good players in this position. You have to be quick thinker, have a clear view of the game and the movements of players, see your team as a whole and place yourself in the right position at any moment. My most favourite players have always played in this position: Guardiola, Koeman, Mathaus, Essien, Beckenbauer and right now Touré Yaya. Normally they are very underrated by press and public. Touré, for example, is a key player at barcelona right now yet everybody talks about Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. But everytime Touré misses a match, the team struggles to win!

Same happens with a lot of teams. See how Milan has gone bad when Pirlo began to step down. And how Liverpool succeeds when Xabi is on form.

The impact of such players in a team is brutal and people should be aware of what these players do for their team. It's difficult to see if you don't love football.

I think Xabi is a good player, a very good one. I wouldn't swap Touré Yaya for him, but if I had not Touré in my team, I would try to sign him as soon as possible. The only negative thing about him is that he has already reached his peak. But he's got still 2 or 3 years at maximum level. I would "never, never, never" sell him if I was Rafa.

About Carrick, I think he's a good player, but he's not in the same group. He has not that impact in your team. To make it clear quickly:

"You don't know for sure if your DMF is a star even if you win. But if you have a DMF who is a star, you know it for sure even if you loose."

Again IMO Alonso and Carrick are on the same level. Alonso was better last season but the 2 seasons previous to that Carrick was much better. I personally don't think either of them are World Class but both integral to their teams and good players.

Am I missing something?! Read another comment somewhere else that he only has 2 good years left, he's only 28! Its not like his game is about running aroundt a lot is it?! The way he plays I would say he has 4 to 5 years left at the top, after all his position is about vision and experience coupled to passing ability. Can't see any of those going down hill any time soon.

Agree with the rest though, well the DMF part. Haven't seen much of Toure.

@ Younggun, I would say the main difference is the ability to control a big match, Carrick doesn't whilst Alonso does.

No Fletcher isn't world class, anyone can see that but it's a fact that nearly every time we've lost over the past 2 years it's when he hasn't played. We've had the conversation in here before I think but he provides us with things that no other player in our team does, except for a fit Hargreaves and it makes a difference.

EDIT: Oh do you mean do I think Xabi is world class??

Not sure. He's very good but there are better.

Thing is Xabi has so much more exposure than other players of arguably similar ability cos he plays for a top four English team so he is likely to be considered world class even if he's not, just like lots of players who are in the same situation.

Hype controls the perception of ability that the majority of people hold for footballers.

Due to the popularity of the Premier League, everyone in the world is aware of Alonso and his ability. Then consider that most people in England have probably not even seen Pirlo play since WC2006 (and he's one of the very best) so imagine how little is known about players from other top/midtable European teams and you can see it's quite a hard thing to determine.

Well you could call Xavi a deep lying playmaker, but he plays much more forward (just like he does for Spain, with Xabi), but I guess if you want to categorize that way, then he too is better than Xabi. And Iniesta is an attacking midfielder.

And Xabi is a world class deep playmaker. There's only Pirlo and Xavi (if you want to call him that) better than him. He's better than Carrick, Lucho, D'Agostino, Ledesma, Pizarro, Veron. Not only last season, but over the past few years. Just a perception that he wasn't this good before. He was just injured a lot more. He wasn't last season, and he showed how good he is.

Calling Carrick better than Xabi, is like me saying that Aurelio's better than Evra. While he's very good, he's not world class. Evra is.

But then nobody / everybody is world class. If tis onyl perception I would say that I had the potential to be a WC player when I was young ;)

I would say the cut off point is the main CL teams, the big3/4 from the major leagues. As anybody who is good enough is likely to have been bought/scouted by them anyway.

Hearing we've jumped back into the race for Huntelaar.

He's not been given a look-in really at Real, and he'll get less now with Perez bringing every attacking player on the planet to the Bernabeu.

Been a fan of his for a while but I didn't realise he was 25 already, for 20 odd million I'm not sure it's the greatest option.

Still a great goalscorer though, wouldn't mind him with Robben or Sneijder as well.

hargreaves was born in calgary, canada

u purchased carrick from us so technically i consider him ours

defoe 1st became good with us so he counts as ours. welbeck isnt even in your b team let alone 1st team, also northern irish doesnt count evans doesnt count. campbell isnt wanted by anyone so he doesnt count either. nd rooney is too angry and looks like shreck so im not sure about him

Campbell is wanted by several teams and has a reasonable £6m tag. Just because Spurs wasted their chance with him doesn't make him unwanted.
Rooney is England's number 1 striker, so I haven't got a scooby as to why you aren't sure about him.
