Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yep he's a great talent, reminds me of Messi. No chance of signing him though, he's Del Piero's replacement and I doubt he would leave Juve.

I wonder how people will react if we don't sign anyone? I can see it happening to be honest.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Well I wouldnt want to see us sign players for the sake of it. As of now, theres no one so the best thing would be to not spend at all. My only problem would be if we used that money on the debt cuz I'd still like to think we get to keep the cash in case players become available in the future.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I dont think that will happen.Signings will be made to replace Ronaldo and Tevez...its just a matter of time now.Have patience my fellow friends...July 1st is coming soon.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think I could handle not signing anyone purely cause I don't have any expectations for this season.

Noone I knew thought we'd win the league last sesaon, especially after the start we had but I was so damn sure about it, and of course, we did.

Now, because we've won three in a row, just seems like there's a lot less pressure, and if we don't win it again, then it's alright cause winning four in a row is unheard of (unless you're French).

That said, maybe I'd still be a tiny bit dissapointed if we didn't spend some of the cash, regardless of the fact the market is shit at the minute.

No, I dont mean that. I mean, if we cant find someone for the whole year, I'm hoping we still keep all the transfer budget for the season after rather than using it to pay off some of the debt.

I dunno about the low expectation thing. For me the fact that winning 4 in a row isnt easy is getting me excited about the season ahead. Obviously apart from our "weakened" squad compared to last year, I think I might be looking forward to this season more than any other.
The only other question mark in my head is how much longer are we gonna have Sir Alex for? With the loss of Tevez and Ronaldo, we have some rebuilding to do with the squad and I'm hoping the manager is around for most of it.

im looking forward to this season more than i have the past few. our team and how we play is about to change and the player ive been wishing we were going to build the team around is finally going to get the attention he deserves.

even if we dont win the title im excited to see how were going to play without ronaldo.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

It is quite exciting for the new season, with Ronaldo now gone the players are really going to want to step it up a gear and show what they are capable of yet again. I have a bit of a feeling that we will finally see some of the old Spurs Berbatov come out this season with him and Rooney purely upfront. The squad and strongest XI at the moment isnt bad at all at the moment with the loss of Ronaldo and Tevez. Obviously wing and striker back up isnt the best, but thats where I see some of the £80M come into play. If some steady away/good squad players that get the job done come in ill be happy

Has Guiza ever been mentioned ? every time I have seen him play for Spain since last years Euro's he has impressed me and his 2 goals today were pure class, well worth a look at in my opinion

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Guiza is gash.

He had one good year in Spain, but he has no pace whatsoever, and whenever I've seen him play against semi-decent and above opposition, he's done nothing at all.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Next season is shaping up nicely, its the first time since 06/07 people our doubting us, I think just like that season a few questions will be asked, can Rooney finally become the player his potential shows? Can Nani finally step up? Were will the goals come from part 2. Can't wait :DD

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I agree. Last season for me was more a relief than a thrilling adventure. We never seemed to step it up that extra gear - just always looked a bit jaded. And when Liverpool came on strong...well it was all a bit terrifying!

This year I don't think you can count us as favourites to win the league. We've lost 40 odd goals a year, and no matter who you get in, no one can replace that in their first season (Ruud you are/were a freak and I love, but there's no new you). Not to mention the fact that no one can replace the old 'give the ball to Ronnie' technique we had to use to get out of tight binds.

Fergie never gets any credit by opposition fans, and they always go on about the money and luck and referees - but no one has ever managed to create so many champion winning sides as he has. He knows what we need, and I'm excited to see it all come together.

Do I think we'll win the league next year? No, absolutely not. Will I enjoy watching us without a large, number 7 wearing shadow looming over us? Yes.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think I'd be willing to put a bet on Rooney being voted Player of the Season if he can keep himself injury free (a longshot I know).

If we're gonna get anywhere near the trophies this year, it'll be because of Wayne, I'm absolutely sure of it.

Lot of faith there in Rooney. He's very talented, but nowhere near as prolific as his reputation suggests. More chances of him going on a scoring drought till you guys face Bolton, and the press harping about how 'Rooney's back'.

In my opinion, you just don't have a player that will score goals regularly, and that's your problem.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Rooney is definitely streaky, but almost every striker is that way. His biggest issue is consistency - everytime he starts getting going he gets injured or Fergie shunts him into a new position.

I think he could quite comfortably get 30 goals in a season (all comps) if played as a centre forward, and appearing in more than 40 matches.

Problem is he won't. :(

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Thing is know Ronaldo has gone, Im pretty sure people will be getting into those positions that he did, nowhere near as often IMO as its probably Ronaldo's biggest strength but with Pens/Fk's being taken by someone else and with Berba/Rooney pushing further forward I think we'll do fine.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Hopefully we've got someone out on the training ground grinding the free kick routines. No one else we have left (really in Europe) can hold a candle to how effective Ronaldo's free kicks were. Ugly some of the time, but like him - direct, powerful and dominant.

I would imagine that (despite Everton FA Semi) Berbatov will take the pens. He used to at Spurs no?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think Anderson will takeover from both duties if he's a regular. give him a season or 2 and he'll become something special.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

keane took the penalties when he was on the pitch, berba can take them though and did a few times.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

The other set-piece specialists we got are Giggsy,Carrick and Hargreaves...we should get the latter fit first though.Dimi Berbatov takes excellent pens but that one miss he made(FA Cup) sticks out like a sore thumb now.

Anderson? He's taken longer than Momo Sissoko to score his first league goal. How can you expect him to even come close to Ronaldo's free kick scoring (which isn't that great).

I think Hargreaves is the best FK taker in your team, even with Ronaldo.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah I don't really rate Ronaldo that highly as a freekick taker, when they go in they look brilliant and he did get better towards the end of last season but the majority of them go over the bar or straight into the wall and it's very frustrating to watch.

I've never seen Carrick take a direct freekick so not sure how you know he's good at them but we've seen that Hargreaves takes a good freekick and I've seen Berbatov score a couple for Spurs, then there's Giggs but he's pretty unreliable. But there's one man who doesn't get much of a chance....
YouTube - Rooneys freekick goal vs fenerbance

Surely we can let him have a go? :D

I read a quote from someone the other day (can't think who) saying Wayne can smash a ball from miles away and make it miss your head by an inch every time. That's pretty impressive accuracy.

I wasn't suggesting he's prolific, but I'm suggesting when he's in his best form, everything revolves around him whether the manager plays it that way or not. He just takes it all his stride and thats what we need more of.

But as someone has just said, he goes on a run of scoring, then gets injured, comes back and he's been moved completely to do a job whilst we accomodate someone else.

Hopefully with him as the focal point, he'll be able to do as he pleases.

I agree, Rooney is important to United, and a very good player (though not one of the best in the world as some people suggest, even if he has the talent). But the thing with me is, Rooney's yet to be part of a team where he's the focal point. Where it's on him to step up, and score the goals. Does he have what it takes to do that next season, we'll wait and see, but I just don't think it's a sure guarantee that he'll turn out to be the player he's supposed to be. Just seems he's far more comfortable doing the supporting role.

I do agree though, with your team now, it's suited to a hilt for a 4-4-2 with Rooney and Berbatov up front. Valencia is a bloody good buy. Can easily see him turn into a 10+ goal winger. Plus, he'll suit Rafael.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If he's yet to be part of a team where he's the focal point, what is he for England?
And to add to that, what's his recent scoring record for England?
If Rooney can play and score as well as he does for England, imagine what he can do with the kind of offensive approach that we have at United.
I do agree with Abhi about Hargreaves though. He's definately the best freekick taker we have, arguably even when we had Ronaldo. The thing with Ronaldo was that his freekicks came out like Marmite (hear me out, lads lol). They were either brilliant or embarrassingly bad. Hargreaves can be more consistant but he doesnt have the power and the confidence with which Ronaldo takes his.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Not sure how you can bash Ronaldo's freekicks, He scored 5+ a season which is as many as any "Specialist" FK taker. Hargreaves is a good shout Abhi but he won't be back til January so we'll see someone take the mantle of FK and Pens. Anderson is pretty cool spot taker and has also scored a few FK's in the past for Gremio/Porto.
