Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!
Yanks Abroad is the first to learn that Manchester United and U.S. national team defender Jonathan Spector will join Charlton Athletic for the 2005/06 Premiership season.
"Jonathan will be heading to Charlton for the season," Spector's agent Steve Kelly confirmed to YA Saturday morning. "This will be a huge opportunity for the lad and he is extremely excited to be heading to London."
"[Sir Alex] Ferguson rates him very highly, and this will be a great chance for Jonathan to pick up quality Premiership experience."
The 19-year old Spector is slated to join up with the London side in the coming days to begin training with his new club in preparation for the upcoming season.
Included on the Addicks' preseason schedule are friendlies with Watford on July 30th and against Feyenoord on August 3rd in what will be American showdowns with countrymen Jay DeMerit and Cory Gibbs, respectively.
At The Valley, the Chicago native will be under the guidance of longtime Charlton boss Alan Curbishley, manager at the club since 1991.
"Mr. Curbishley and Sir Alex are great friends and they both agree that this [loan] will be in the best interest off all involved," Kelly explained. "Jonathan for now, Charlton in the short-term, and in the long run, Manchester United."
The loan will mark the second time in eight months that the youngster has been farmed out by Manchester United. The previous spell to Blackburn Rovers - which was announced in December 2004 and to become official on January 1st of this year - was eventually rescinded as the injury plagued Red Devils kept Spector at Old Trafford as rearguard cover.
Last season, Spector made eight appearances for Man Utd, three each in the Premiership and Champions League and one apiece in the FA and Carling Cup competitions.
The Addicks finished the 2004/05 campaign in 11th place and will look to build upon that position when they open their season away to Sunderland on August 13th.
