Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

I know he's getting old but but we didnt have a bad last season because of our midfield. It was because we couldnt score as many goals as we normally do. And if Owen can score goals for us, whats the problem?

IMO, if we can get a really good goal scorer, we wont have to worry about Keane, Giggs and Scholes' replacements.

Owen: I want to join United
Michael Owen has revealed he wants to join Manchester United. The England striker is starting to accept his Real Madrid career is drawing to a close. And a source close to the former Liverpool star, 25, said: "It looks like Real are ready to sell. If that is the case, he has a hankering to play for United. He does realises it wouldn't go down too well with the Anfield fans who used to idolise him but that is something he is prepared to live with. He enjoys partnering Rooney with England and would love to link up with him at club level." A move to Old Trafford would enable Owen to live in his £5 million luxury mansion Lower Soughton Hall in Flintshire with his bride-to-be Louise Bonsall and their two year-old daughter Gemma. United are thought to be closing in on Owen with a £15 million bid – though Real Madrid would like Ruud Van Nistelrooy to be part of an exchange package. But the sale of United striker Louis Saha to Everton is the deal which could open the way for Owen to bolster Sir Alex Ferguson's strike force.
David Harrison, News of the World

Glazer gives green light for Owen bid
The Glazer family have told Sir Alex Ferguson: 'Go and sign Michael Owen.' New Old Trafford owner Malcolm and son Joel, the driving forces of the takeover, are determined to help deliver a transfer coup which they hope will deflect some of the criticism which has come their way from angry Manchester United supporters. The Glazers have been made aware that Ferguson is an admirer of England striker Owen, whose immediate future is up in the air at Real Madrid. Now the Glazers are backing Ferguson to actively step into negotiations to bring Owen back to the Premiership after just one season away in Spain. That would mean United coming up with the £11million to activate a clause in the player's contract - the fee which any club would have to pay to open negotiations with Real Madrid if owen said yes to a swift return to the English game. Ferguson knows Owen and £27million striker Wayne Rooney have hit it off at international level. He also believes Ruud van Nistelrooy can fit into the equation with Rooney playing wide.
John Richardson, Sunday Express

OK. I'm starting to get really excited by these rumours. If we loan out Saha to Fulham or Everton, We could have Ruud, Rooney and Owen in attack with Smith moving into midfield.
Surely with Owen in the team, we wont have a goal scoring problem.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

So RvN and Owen upfront with Rooney wide! Giggs on the left.
Ronaldo warming up the bench, and ruinning his career! I'm starting to think that he should leave.

Something like that?

Keane and Scholes could alternate and Giggs could get a game now and then instead of Park.

There we go. Problem solved! :D

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

I think it makes sense to pull Rooney back into an OMF role. Scholes isn't going to be around that much longer, and he really wasn't his best last season anyway. Rooney is creative, can run at defenders and certainly can strike from distance. Plus at this stage of his career he isn't nearly as clinical as RVN or indeed Owen.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Rune, hopefully we can intro Pique or Spector into the first team, although I prefer the latter,so he could be a first choice backup to Gaz...hell,even Park could play at right back...our defence department is really well covered,no problems there, plus we got Edwin at the back.Solid.

I want to see Fletcher get more games next season, but if we sign everybody we've been linked with we'll have no space left.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Thats true. With so many players in our first team, its easy to forget about Spector and Pique.
I remember Spector had a few games at left back at the start of the season and IMO, he could have stayed there if it wasnt for Heinze.
If we get Owen, we could leave Rossi in the reserves for another season or maybe play him in the Carling Cup which would take some pressure off him and give him more time to develop even further.

Supposedly our new away kit. What do you guys think of it? Its the same template as Arsenal's away kit

. I hate it when we use the same kit template as other team's.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

I kinda like it. ManUtd.com said during last season that we'll have a new Blue kit for next season so this may be it.

yeah sure... an all attacking midfield, and scholes cannot fill a roll of DMF. you wanna finish 6th place?

An alternative midfield.

-------Keane-------
-ronaldo-----giggs-

And owen and RvN upfront.
But Ronaldo is not efficient at defending, but of course he can improve.

And Rune, you only showed the positions each player can do, not a starting 11.

A lot of people have said that but the reason for this seasons failure wasnt the formation.

I've seen countless post on this thread saying that the formation wasn't correct...
And I agree with Milanista.

IMO 4-2-2 is the best, with Rooney and RvN, I don't see the need for owen, but of course good players are always welcome. But we'll see Rooney on the wing (4-3-3 seems fergie fav now), another thing I've seen on this thread, people saying that they hate the fact that he is put there...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

I'd use Rooney as a striker. Hes physical, technical, determined, and can finish. So why not use his abilities like England did.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Explain why whenever we play 4-3-3, we get nearly 20 shots on goal without scoring and the opposition get 2 shots and win the game?
How come we outplayed Arsenal in the FA Cup final without scoring a single goal?

The simple answer is that our players just couldnt finish in front of goal. Theres no problem in creating chances. We just cant convert chances into goals. And its not half chances, we're talking about hitting the post 4 times in a match without scoring.
What part of that suggests that we need to change formations? If you can create 20 chances with a formation, the manager would be a fool to use a different formation.
All we need is someone like Owen because he is very good at scoring the type of chances we have been getting all season.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Also because the fact that more than half of your chances also come from the wingers, whos job arent necessarily to score goals but to create them. I dont think 3 in attack is useful as in reality only 1 of the 3 are meant for scoring goals. Having 2 specialist strikers upfront would give them a specific role as opposed to a bigger task that the strikers were having this season. Having 3 upfront is almost like forcing the wingers into strikers.

Look at some of the teams who have performed better than United this season, they have 2 strikers - Chelsea, Real, Milan, Juventus, Arsenal - they all rely on 2 strikers.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Chelsea play 4-3-3 EXACTLY like Man Utd...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

wait, maybe im confusing something...isnt it eidur-drogba upfront with robben and duff on the wings?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

One striker with Duff and Robben on the wings and then 3 midfielders which is Lampard, Makalele and the third is usually someone stupid like Tiago.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

I don't see Owen fitting on a 4.3.3 formation, when a team plays in this manner the striker usually must be strong and good in the hair. Owen is fast, and reasonable in the air.
Money would be better spent on other players.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Depends, if you use a 4-3-3 wth 1 striker and 2 wingers, it wouldnt work. But if it was like this Roone --- Van --- Owen , then things would be different.

Also, where the hell you lot getting this owen to utd stuff from!?!?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Ruud to stay??

Back to our supposedly new jersey...it makes us look like Rangers! Anyways I agree with the fact that we could use whatever formation last season but the ineffectiveness to finish infront of goal was our biggest flaw.

Actually your idea is better. Chelsea also played with Eidur on the wing so Owen probably could do it too.

And the Owen news is coming from many different newspapers saying that Glazer is insisting on buying him. I wouldnt ignore these rumours cuz its starting to look very likely that Man Utd are about to make a bid.

I've never looked at it that way. Maybe you're right. But our kit is darker than Rangers' one so it still looked different to me.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

We should get Owen a proven scorer no doubt still scored goals despite being a sub for most of the season.

mm I dont' agree, I mean If Man Utd were to use such formation both Rooney and Owen would have to stick alot to the lines, And CF's don't like that, and IMO owen is not the type of player to fit the wing. Tha formation is usually used when a team is in need of goals, either by losing 1-0 or more or being tied. It's a backup plan, not a 11st eleven formation.

And for the record, I'm not really against the signing of Owen, I just think that the money would be better spent elsewhere, because he is no doubt a great player, and get's alot of goals even starting from the bench.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

.........Van Der Sar...........
...Gary N.....Rio.......Heinze....
...........Keane..................
Ronaldo....Scholes.......Giggs(Park)
...........Rooney..................
........owen.......RVN.............

This could revert to 4-4-2 if needed, with Keano slipping back in to CB (the pos many people think he should start playing as he ages....)Otherwise 3-4-3, with rooney deep off the strikers

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

When people are saying 4-3-3, its doesnt have to mean that its 1 striker and 2 wingers.
England played a 4-3-3 where they had 3 full strikers and no wingers.
And this would be a perfect formation to use when Ronaldo isnt playing. And its not like EVERYONE is gonna be fit all season so we're gonna have to swap and change formations to suit the players we have available.

Here are some examples:

#4-3-3# 3 Strikers and 3 Center Midfielders
------------------------------------------
-----van Nistelrooy------Owen---------
------------------Rooney----------------
------------------------------------------
----Giggs/Fortune----Scholes/Fletcher-
-------------------Keane-----------------
------------------------------------------

#4-3-3# 1 Striker with Wingers
----------------------------------------------
-----------van Nistelrooy/Owen------------
-Rooney/Giggs-------------Ronaldo/Park-
----------------------------------------------
---------------Rooney/Scholes-------------
---Scholes/Giggs-------Keane/Fletcher---
----------------------------------------------

#4-4-2# Standard formation
----------------------------------------------
------van Nistelrooy-------Owen----------
----------------------------------------------
-Rooney/Giggs--------------Ronaldo/Park-
-----------Scholes----Keane/Fletcher------
----------------------------------------------

#4-4-2# Diamond Formation
------------------------------------------
-----van Nistelrooy------Owen---------
------------------------------------------
-----------Rooney/Scholes------------
----Giggs/Ronaldo-----Park/Fletcher-
-----------------Keane-------------------
------------------------------------------

Is it still hard to see how Owen can fit into our team?
If we can just get scoring again, we could have possibly created a team that better than the '99 squad.
