Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I'm always confident of our defence team,it has been rock solid since Rio came back. Its our attack thats not finishing off chances that came.I sure,we are now back to business as usual and only 9 points behind chelsea. We are hitting our stride finally and lets toast to Sir Alex for his 1000th game this tuesday...and yah,we gotta beat Lyon to avoid the big boys in the next round of Champions League.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Solari Swoop?

Real Madrid wide man Santiago Solari is reportedly heading for Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson continues his search for a long term replacement for Ryan Giggs. As previously suggested by skysports.com, the talented 28-year-old is high on the wish-list of Ferguson and could be a summer arrival at Manchester United.Solari has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth in the Spanish capital, but is well regarded by both team-mates and fans alike at El Santiago Bernabeu. The player has spent the previous four seasons at Real Madrid and tellingly, played under United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz last term.Queiroz is a known admirer of the Argentine, who in the past, has conceded that he was flattered by the attention showed to him by the Premiership giants. The United board have already informed Ferguson that finances will be tight in the summer - a situation that could lend itself to a move for Solari, as he will be out of contract in Madrid.Sky Sports News.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

im not so sure whether or not picking up solari will make such an impact. are we looking for somebody to replace giggs for a long term effect? or are we looking for somebody to replace him termporarily. solari is 28, this means giggs is only 3 years his senior. does it not make more sense we look for someone younger?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I wouldn't exactly call Solari the long term replacement for Giggsy. Maybe Fergie knows something about the contract talks with Giggs that he isn't telling us. :(

Also, lately Its been interesting looking at our tactics/formation. We seem to play a 4-3-2-1 now. With three centre midfielders (Fletcher, Keane, Scholes), two wingers (Rooney, Giggs) and Ruud up front on his own. This is not the first time I've seen this. Portugal, Holland, Chelsea, Wales and a few other teams do this. So when we're defending it turns in to a five in midfield.

Well, you can't argue with it if its getting you wins against Newcastle away from home, and a win against Charlton. Its also interesting to see Fergie leave out a big player to play this way. For example; to play Rooney and Ronaldo in the team, he had to leave out Giggs (which he did in the two previous games). Against Charlton he could fit Giggs in at the expense of Ronaldo. Maybe against Lyon we could see Mr Rooney taking a turn on the bench.

well the only problem is that we're now playing ruud by himself as the lone striker. he has always been best when he has somebody feeding him into the box and after touching the ball a little, he ll smack it on to goal. not being to have ronaldo and rooney on is a real waste, however im afraid youre right and that does seem to be we're playing.

you lot think fletch-keano-scholes is better? what about miller somewhere in the mix?

The plus of this formation is that we can dominate games from our centre midfield (ala Barcelona). It would also give Fletcher more games in the team. Of course, Rooney could go upfront at any time to make it 4-4-2.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah, the first 11 formation seems to be:

--------------------------------------------- Carrol ------------------------------------------------

-------- G.Neville ------------- Ferdinand ----- Silvestre ------------------- Heinze ------

------------------------------------------- Keane ---------------------------------------------------

----------------------------- Scholes ------------------ Rooney -----------------------------------

--------- Ronaldo ------------------------------------------------------------------ Giggs ---------

------------------------------------------ V.Nistlerooy ----------------------------------------------

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah.

Against Newcastle it was:

--------------------------------------------- Carroll ------------------------------------------------

-------- G.Neville ------------- Ferdinand ----- Silvestre ------------------- Heinze ------

------------------------------------------- Keane ---------------------------------------------------

----------------------------- Fletcher ------------------ Scholes -----------------------------------

--------- Ronaldo ------------------------------------------------------------------ Rooney ---------

------------------------------------------ V.Nistelrooy ----------------------------------------------

And against Charlton:

--------------------------------------------- Carroll ------------------------------------------------

-------- Brown ------------- Ferdinand ----- Silvestre ------------------- Fortune ------

------------------------------------------- Keane ---------------------------------------------------

----------------------------- Fletcher ------------------ Scholes -----------------------------------

--------- Rooney ------------------------------------------------------------------ Giggs ---------

------------------------------------------ V.Nistelrooy ----------------------------------------------

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

This formation is well document these days, and the team that has successfully used it so far is Greece, euro champs. Its called the "Block Defending" formation.Chelsea,Barca are also using it if I'm not mistaken. The key to this formation are the 3 central midfielders, they are the main engine room, and when defending, they have to pull in the wingers, this in turn, changes the midfield into a 5 man-defensive block, hence the term,"Block Defending".Works well against counter attacking teams but the wingers have to work hard in supporting the lone striker upfront.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Phrase, where could learn stuff like football tactics' terms like the one you just mentioned?

I dunnoe if you can find it on the net mate.My friend is a football coach for an amatuer team and he knows all these tactics.I learned from him a lot and on my local newspaper, there is this guy,a former national team footballer(whos a coach now in Singapore's S-League.) whom analyses top matches and gives his reviews and analysis to the paper to be publish, top notch, quality stuffs.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

its makes a lot of sense though, and i can see why many top clubs would use it. however against weaker teams im not so sure if it would be as effective, as shown against charlton, where we won but was never at our best. perhaps we have to get used to it.

id like to see us use it again in our midweek clash with lyon in CL play, a win there will guarentee us a spot in the next round, allowing us to use our reserves in the last match against sparta prague at home

it's also fergie's 1,000th match in charge of manchester united, should be a good one

I'm pretty sure our last match is away to Fenerbahce.

It is. I was at the home fixture against Sparta Prague. We won 4-1. Fenerbahce away is gonna be a tough fixture.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I hope we go all out attack. Our defense is good enough now that we can afford to attack more and take chances.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I hope Ruud plays in the Fenerbahce game so that he could increase his HUGE goal tally. But SAF will most likely play his reserve team and possibly Pique too.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

i cannot watch this game until wensday night ughhhh, but that will be ok, because thursday is thanksgiving! So i can get really drunk and enjoy the boys!

whoa whoa, we've gotta win tonite first, its not gonna be easy, they've got a few players out but its still gonna be a tough one.

Its been floating around for abit, the papers have just got wind of Fergies interest in Gravesen, this is just what we need, he would defo beef up the midfield and he can keep things going in attack aswell, fingers crossed.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Remember, Lyon are two points ahead of us. Even if we beat them tonight they could still finish top if they beat Sparta (which is likely) and we fail the beat Fenerbahce.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Good performance tonight

Brown did a good job when he came on, Keanes performance was brilliant
What a strike by Neville ;), hopefully the little niggles on Ruud, Keane wont be too bad for the game on Saturday, bring on the Baggies

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

That was one of our sharpest performances of the season so far and as sir Alex said it seems we're finding our rhythm now!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Great performance. Good passing, confident throughout the game (except Carrolls mistake), Keane tidied up all loose ends, Ronaldo was awesome (again), Ferdinand proved why he is one of the best centre backs in Europe (defended well, set up the winning goal), Rooney showed moments of brilliance, and Scholes made the complicated things look easy - this was a United performance of old: Possession, good passing + movement, attacked with menace, defended with pace + strength, excited the crowd, moved through the middle + the wings. Oh, and Gary Neville nearly ripped a hole in the net with his goal. I was a very happy United bunny tonight - watch out the rest of Europe.

perfectly valid point. we cannot play 100% reserves against fener. we did beat them convincingly at home, so perhaps away will not be like taking candy away from a baby. if we play a half half reserve/ first team we should be in safe hands, coming out of this group first is the number one goal

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Does anyone know which group's teams we play against, or are UEFA gonna have a draw?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Great result last nite, thats why I love the european nites at OT, and you can tell the crowd does aswell, it was a different place compared to saturday where we ended up messing around in the stands cos it was so dull. A good performance helped aswell, we looked good going forward, a big improvement over the last few weeks, if it all clicks for the turn of the year then we'll be in with a good chance of winning something again this year.

And what a way to celebrate The Grand Imperial Lord Ferg's 1000th game in charge.

Bit of a downer that Ruuds injured, probley rest him for saturday but other than that, three wins on the trot, thru to the next round, West Brom next, lets see if can do what the arse wipes couldnt do.

"Keep the red flag flying high!"

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

You know what,I'm actually happy that Roy Carroll made that clanger against Lyon. That will make him wake up and smell the coffee.Tim Howard is still a superb goalkeeper and Roy needs to remember that his run in the first team is not always guaranteed.Hope he will be pressured into signing the new contract now if he still feels he's number 1 at United.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I've been reading that United want Everton and Denmark's Thomas Gravesen for £2,000,000 plus Phil Neville. I personally think that would be great business except for exchanging Phil, one of those rare, versatile players.I think Djemba Djemba or Kleberson would be ideal for the bit part exchange. Then again, how strong is this rumour?
