try to bend your mind around this one alright?: tim howard didnt have the pressure in his first campaign, why should he? he was just an ordinary american golkeeper (like all MLS golkeepers) living out the most extra-ordinary life a golkeeper could dream of: playing football at the highest level club-wise (and i dont mean manchester united, i mean CL, premier league, WC etc). he was told to just be himself in the first season and that's why he seemed to be a good fit. united had ferdy playing well and howard was just being himself (as i said earlier).
but in the start of his second season, the line of defense in front of him became drastically weaker, to a point where a 19 year old fellow american had to be called on for several nights to clear the balls ahead of howard. the pressure also grew because golkeepers tend to need a year to fit in, and now that that year has expired, he has got this new sense of pressure piled on him.
