Manchester United Thread

LVG needs to go.

Give Giggs the role.
Put the Neville brothers behind him.
Bring through a new batch of young players to go with the handful that have made an excellent impression this season.

Build for the next 10+ years on that basis.

Ferguson did this and was rewarded with over 20 years of success.

What have United got to lose?
Going for a Jose or other big name manager, will repeat the last 4 years of nothingness in my opinion.

What have United to lose, everything, money, position to other clubs who are improving... mostly the fear factor is gone after few months in to Moyes reign...

If United fans and board had the time to build, they would keep Moyes...

the days of long term football coaches are over...clubs and fans demand fast success, 2 max, 3 years and if you don´t deliver, you are out.

But if they did do that (let Giggs become a manager with Neville as assistant), and they start playing attractive attacking football with young players and a few seasoned veterans who are still hungry (main point), and finish 5th for 2 seasons and seems like they may be able to crack top 4 in the 3rd season, and build on that....the True Die-hard fans would feel more than happy to continue to support the club. They'd lose a few of the glory hunters, but it'd be there...

As for economically, it won't hurt too badly as their contracts now are quite secure for long terms and I do not doubt the work that Woodward does for the business side of the club. They'll continue to strive there even if they aren't champions immediately.

But with Jose, and his style of football/history, you won't have many youth players coming up, will be defensive, and will have results for a season or 2, before it all completely crashes and a new manager will be needed. I really do not feel that he's the right guy.

Only one team can win the league.

United will remain one of the worlds biggest clubs even with years of not winning leagues.

Maybe a change of perspective is needed to the 'quick fix' mentality created by the billionaire playground brigade that has crashed the EPL.

United had an amazing run of success built on long term planning.
They have more class than to demand a mercenary such as Jose in charge.

Short term loss for long term gain would be far more beneficial in my opinion.

Statiscally and seen with common sense a succes period like under Ferguson, will never happen again.
So the fans need to have lower expectations. If that is what LVG means, i agree with him. But fans like to see good attacking football. Fans like that expensive transfers are a moderatie success...so i understanding they want LVG to go.

But Mourinho is a short term solution. He will spend loods of money, you will see dire defensive football and the club will not be better if he leaves in less than three seasons.

Giggs and the Neville brothers is not such a bad idea.

We definitely need the fear factor back. It's small things, but would Dean have sent Mata off earlier in the season if it wasn't so easy now? Last night we had a clear as day penalty on Mata - not given. Those decisions have gone against all season, but at least Jose might get some of that back. (I'm not saying it's good that managers use the media to pressure referees, but having seen how refs treat us when we don't...well...)

We need something. I was watching the match with fans of Villa, N'Castle and Wolves respectively and all they wanted to know was why United haven't fired LVG. I said I had absolutely no idea.

LVG speaking of expectations being too high...f*ck right off. He said expectation was 1st place the day he came in. This time last season he said we'll aim to win the league. Just because he failed to deliver anything doesn't mean that he gets to lower the bar.

It's sad because he was once great...maybe 15 years ago. So lets remember those days, and try to forget these ones as he retires with grace. Please.

Last point, if I were DDG I'd leave just because I have to play behind Chris Smalling. I'm not sure I've come across a player with less brain power. 92nd minute, no real danger within 5 yards of him and he takes an almighty swing at a ball deflected across the box, of course doing the one thing he can never do when passing which is finding the target.

His praise this season has been largely down to a system that means he's barely ever having to defend. When push comes to shove, he's been terrible. Especially in the last few months.

Be carefull for what you wish with Mourinho.
You might win a title, but he will almost certain leave (or been fired) after 3 seasons at most and will leave a club to rebuild. Likei already said, he's a short term solution.

Also doubt if the fear factor come from a manager, it has to come from the players. Did Ferguson intstall a fear factor? I gets too muchcredit for that. He got a team with very good and charismatic players like Schmeichel, Ince, Mark Hughes and Cantona. That team had very talentd players like Kanchelskis and Lee Sharpe (he was good then), free kick specialists like Dennis Irwin and "assasins" like Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister. And then i don't mention 'the kids'.
Ferguson started to build with that team as his foundation and started to replace older players like Kanchelskis and Hughes with others. But by then they were champions and had installed a certain mentality that installed fear. I don't see any players like that in the current squad. Mourinho will have to buy an awfull lot of players to have a competitive team. I can see him be champion in his second season and leave in the third...will UNited have a similar foundation as that Ferguson team? I doubt it.

You don't want Mourinho. You want a long term solution. I also think that people like Bobby Charlton don't even want Mourinho...

Mourinho's fear factor has gone now too.

Once he's settled in, the pressure at Utd will see him losing it big time.

It will bring back the spice of the derby tho, a game which has gone to shit with LVG vs Pellegrini.

I agree that fear factor comes from the players on the field rather than the manager. It does start with wins though, as wins builds confidence which then builds that belief that they can't lose, which then (if channeled properly) builds that fear factor from other teams as that confident team comes with the swagger and skill that just makes opposing teams doubt and once they doubt, they fear...(ok, maybe its not THAT simple, but something like it...haha)

But with a strong manager that gets them winning and believing and instilling that confidence in them, it does get easier...

With the money in the league and all the other teams competing, its impossible to replicate what Liverpool did in the 80s and what United did in the Ferguson era anymore...however, such teams should always be fighting up there for it. With a vision and direction. Without that and constant changes, you get what Liverpool has and falling to the middle of the league and not being able to bounce back and without that confidence and strong will-power from the players, even with a long term plan you'll end up like Arsenal who's always close, but never there. (Imagine the invincibles for a second...the players on that team and how strong they were in confidence and will-power to beat every team)

Absolutely, you have to earn the fear factor on the pitch. I just worry how 'soft' we are as a team - this isn't a dig - but a bit like City. Great players, but not the kind of team people fear. Same thing happened to Arsenal over time.

The great thing about the classic United and Arsenal sides - and then Chelsea - was that not only did you know the players were better at football than you, they were almost pathologically programmed to win. Players like Ferdinand, Henry, Terry - they believed it was their right to win every single match.

Now we have Lingard, Mata and Blind vying for nicest bloke in the premier league, while Chris Smalling tries to work out which goal he's protecting.

As much as I hate what we become when Fellaini is on the pitch, at least he cares. Which is why he should start on Saturday, along with our other determined types: Rooney, Valencia and Herrera.

Did i detect some form of praise for Marouane there? Getting soft and old, beach?

Yep, don't love him for his footballing ability, but I've never once gotten the impression he's not trying. Far more talented players put in far less effort.

Then again, he'll probably get sent off for an elbow in the 2nd minute to prove me wrong ;)

Memphis left out of the squad for the final...either typical bonkers LVG or a punishment. There's no reason not to take him in the squad, even if he doesn't make the bench.

Kid looked like the next big thing, this season has been an unmitigated disaster. Who is to blame? Not sure, probably him and LVG share it. But please lord let us have a new manager to at least try a new approach.

With Depay surely it's better to cut the losses and get rid of him. Rushford and Martial are better options and if you sign a striker they could be on the wings. Depay now is just a winger who was good abroad but had a bad season or couldn't adjust to England (like a less good Di Maria). He still has his good record at Psv so will command an ok fee, if he has another year on the bench his value will plummet.a

Agreed, tough choice. The single best performance by any player this year was his...against Midgetland.

He scored so many wonderful goals last season though - the talent is there - if I were United I'd give him at least a preseason and through Christmas with the (please God) new manager.

As someone who has seen a lot of pre-United Memphis, I have to say I'm not very surprised by his 'failure' thusfar at United. His last season for PSV was not as great as the stats might say. He had periods where he would go missing for almost the entire game, only to compensate by scoring a nice goal. In the Eredivisie this is possible due to side-backs not being great defenders at all.

Memphis playing great against Club Brugge and Midtjylland kind of proves it, he's great when playing teams who are at that level.

It's his sulking and off the field antics that annoy me more than anything. At least I could kind of take it if he d appear to be putting in a 110% or make something happen. He makes Valencia on the wing the last few seasons look like a freaking superstar. RvP did the sulking thing but all he needed was that one moment or touch.. Not to mention he actually was worth a lot when it comes to helping out in defense (wonder how many balls he kicked or headed off the line to prevent a scoring chance.. Mustve been quite a few).

I'd say get rid too. Regardless of what folks say it's clear the premier league s speed and physicality is a big problem for some players, especially with the pressure of playing for a club like United. Look at Di Mario or Falcao (I actually felt bad for the latter, he seems like such a loveable guy). It's also part of the reason why Id secretly hope to see us take Zlatan for a season or two. He has the physique obviously but I'd really wanna see if he can handle the PL.

Regarding what really seems a given to me.. The Mourinho appointment : he s a massive dick BUUUTTTTTT.. interestingly the only times he never really was is when it came to playing against us or speaking about United. Despite his flaws and mercenary status he gets some massive (albeit perhaps undeserving) credit from me for what seems to be a coach who truly seems to admire the club, even after SAF's departure.

AFAIK, he wanted to be SAF's successor for ages.

GGMU! Cup final day!

Let's give Louis a nice parting gift. Big shiny one. Expect Rooney to run himself into the absolute ground today - this is the last club trophy he hasn't won.

Not at all difficult prediction: Rojo is going to get a second yellow if left on much longer.

Waiting. To. Happen. Good thing LVG could bring on the deputy LB Cameron Borthw...oh yeah, he's not even in the squad.

Sigh.

Delaney with a leg breaker, Cabaye with a stamp on an 18 year old on the ground. Requiring 2 subs due to injuring the United players on each occasion.

But I'm 100% sure the pundits will discuss Clattenberg not playing advantage (we he obviously should have).

I can't believe these commentators just gloss over anything against us.

Going behind, getting a stupid and deserved red card on Mike, two injuries, playing without a striker and still winning. It wasn't pretty but it sure is epic. :PIG:

I wouldn't go that far. It was pretty drab stuff. Typical LVG United.

congrats to the result, but overall the level of football was shocking...

i have to watch some more Bundesliga because the level of Bayern vs BVB is just another planet to PL..

Only just saw the Jose stuff was done before the trophy etc. That's pathetic if that came from the club.

And it might be worse if it came from Jose.

[...]overall the level of football was shocking [...]

Well, I guess a potential final between Schalke and Hoffenheim would be no gem either. And IMHO there is no need to. Anyway, it was a great final. Coming back shorthanded and winning could produce a spark. Looking forward to it.

COME ON UNITED!

Immature of the media not to congratulate LVG. Feel kind of bad for him and can totally understand his frustration with the sports press in this country. Almost to a man, they are scum. The worst thing is that they'll all be right back up Mourinho's arsehole when he returns.
Feels weird saying it about a Utd manager but I really like LVG and would have happily swapped him for MP this season. I think LVG would have done better with our squad than MP did. He's also not boring as f...

Bets on who (Pep/Mou) gets asked about the other 1st/the most in their press conferences?
