Manchester United Thread

wow, that is it for Shaw for a long time..feel sorry for the guy, finally he made it to the first 11 and now this...

I know it's not all his fault, but we're utterly awful whenever Fellaini comes on. We went from creating through passing to absolutely nothing the moment he entered the field.

He lost the ball, didn't hold it up and didn't shoot when he had the chance, and all of our players looked long to him. It was a shambles.

PSV are okay. We should have been 3-0 up before they scored though, despite the shock of Moreno's 'challenge' breaking Shaws leg.

Martial and Schweinsteiger were excellent. To be honest really should have won, looking back on the match not clear how we managed to lose!

That Moreno even broke his own leg @WC . All , I thought of (double break) was Ramsey all over . The healing process will be quick , the mental part took Ramsey nearly 3.5 yrs. I wouldn't expect Shaw running gun blazing through the middle for s few years. He might be a better defender from it. I hope a speedy recovery...we have a draw for double breaks (Dudu,Ramsey) vs (Smith,Shaw).

Just saw, Van Gaal post interview about Shaw. He said' he had an oxygen mask and was crying" ffs! Is nothing sacred  can the kid have a smudge of integrity.

My best wishes to Luke Shaw. I hope he recovers well. It's a player i really like.

After something horrible like this, results seem less important, but i hope this will inspire the United players to play a very good CL for Shaw.

Edit: IPhone...lol...this happens all the time when i post with my IPad...sorry.

Man, finally braved up to watching that challenge again...ouch.

I know us English teams always believe officials in Europe punish us a bit unfairly, but comparing that 'challenge' with the red that ended SAF's final push against Madrid...you do wonder what these refs are smoking.

To be fair to the ref, he spent the remaining 80 minutes of the match looking like a war vet with PTSD, so he was clearly shaken up by it. But then you just wonder, if he couldn't see it was a reckless challenge, fine, but what was the guy behind the net looking at? Some ladies in the crowd?

FIFA/UEFA need to be clear. They claim to be changing the rules to protect players, but then this leg breaker is deemed fine by presumably at least 3 of their best officials.

I don't really mind as I'm old, but they can't have it both ways. 15/20 years ago no one would have batted an eye about that challenge, because he did indeed play the ball. But the rules apparently have changed to reflect the increased pace and danger of the sport whereby playing the ball isn't the rule, it's being reckless and endangering other players by being out of control. So which is it?

One thing is for sure, the 'expert pundits' have no idea. It's either a 'good full last-ditch tackle', a 'full-blooded challenge', 'he got a touch on the ball' or 'the kind of challenge [defender x who is a pundit] would be proud of'.

Anyway, I find Moreno's apology a big meh. Here's a player who's just come back from a broken leg apologising and saying he knows what it's like. Well maybe play fairly and don't go launching yourself into dangerous tackles?

Fully agree. I know it shouldn't have factored in but the fact he scored the injury time goal in injury time he is responsible for and then celebrating it like he just scored the winner was despicable to me. Hence I was looking forward to see what his reaction would be after the game and it just seems anything but sincere. I'm sorry, but that makes you a massive dick.

I'm glad Beach is the one to address the bigger issue here.

Shaw seems like one of those kids who works very hard and is difficult to not like so perhaps it stung a bit more than normal. Great to see the words of kindness from other PL teams and players for him. I really hope he returns strong.. He looked to be the revelation for this team before this happened. Massive letdown.

Perhaps the most worrying part was Moreno told the press the challenge was fair 'because I got the ball' (he did apologise for breaking Shaw).

When even the players don't know the rules, what's the point really?

Well, if Moreno did really get all the ball and the impact of his strong challenge affected Shaw on the other side of the ball, how is Morena to blame? I've seen many clean challenges and none gone wrong. How could he possibly know Shaw's leg will snap?

Just wanted to come here and wish Luke Shaw a quick recovery. A player with that great potential don't deserve this. Hope he can recover this. Get well soon!

Having the ball is not enough nowadays, lami.
Refs can also punish excessive force and Moreno's tackle could have been excessive (i' haven't seen it yet and don't plan to watch it, to be honest).

His foot was planted at the exact moment of impact resulting in the break.

A split second earlier or later and I'm sure it wouldn't have resulted in a break.

Reckless challenge? Yes
Malicious? No

Such a shame for Shaw though.
Big blow for United and England.
He's young enough to fully recover so let's just hope there's no long term problem there as a lot of damage has obviously been done and ligaments along with tendons can be far worse to repair over broken bones.

As my other post said, I'm a bit old skool with the sport and genuinely believe that Shaw was just unlucky.

But, UEFA/FIFA have made a huge stink about changing the laws of the game to protect players, and any challenge that puts another player at risk because the defender is 'not in control', 'reckless' and so forth is supposed to be punished. So this is a great opportunity for them to show it, but that ref screwed it up.

What's really funny is that he was more than happy to send Rafael off for a hint of a shirt pull on Ribery (who obliged by hurling himself to the ground), but a dangerous challenge snapping a leg in two? Well that's just part of the game.

As per the Arsenal post, when two officials in the same competition deem Giroud's 2nd foul as worthy of a second yellow and Moreno's as not a foul...makes you wonder about football refereeing in general.

It's more the mental part that is worrying.

Dunno if we'll win the match, but Martial has now scored more away goals in 2015 than Wayne Rooney in the league.

In his first start.

I hate to applaud early but signs are there Martial could be an unexpected master stroke. Now if we can get Memphis and Rooney firing in the league...because at this rate Martial will be man marked every time.

Also.. De Gea.. *drools*

Rooney looked a bit off today. he didn't play too badly but had very little influence. Also Depay needs to get involved more. I think young deserves a starting role and I would have him on the left with Depay playing off Martial

It looks like in De Gea and Martial (if he keeps this up), Utd are one of 3 clubs to have quality at both ends of the pitch. This gives any team a chance at winning a league, irrespective of any issues elsewhere. Wenger still under the impression you can win a league without a good ST...

Martial won't keep this up, but fun to watch. More impressive than the goals were his ability to control and run with the ball. Didn't expect him to be the type to pull down a goal kick and turn a defender.

Rooney has become a serious albatross for LVG. Will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Watching the likes of Pereira and Martial doing well makes me so happy. Love our youth. On the flip side, BFS is truly a class above anyone else in a way. Makes me a bit sad we didn't get him a few years ago already. Hope he keeps this up for another 4 or so. What a player. Handing the captain s strap to De Gea after Rooney initially gave it to him was a nice touch.

Was good to have half the day off today!

It probably won't happen because it rarely works out, but in theory this could be our front line next season:

--Memphis--Januzaj--Perreira-
-----------Martial-----------

That is some talent, all outrageously young. I'd totally build a team around that if I were Giggs/other new manager.

Would be awesome.. Man Utd should offload Rooney.
Would be a good thing for both player and club.

Beach, you Always make the same typo in Januzaj (Janujaz). But i should better not mention it, because i make plenty of typo's...it's just that it's a funny typo. Sorry!

Agree with both of you.

But I think Pereira is the more talented number 10, at least from what I've seen. Think Januzaj is more suited for a winger could become a very good one.

Also, if we're talking about the near future, I think Mata and Herrera should be somewhere in there - Mata has been the most effective midfielder for us this and last season in terms of scoring and creating chances. And Herrera seems to make our attack a bit better when he's playing - his crisp passing is very useful for a team that plays possession football.
