Manchester United Thread

Carrick's had surgery and will be out til around October :(

Should potentially 'force' the new manager to make a decision on another midfield player. Long term would be good for us.

Wonder who Van Gaal will prefer in central midfield now. Almost the whole squad is available for the tour, so we might get an early answer next week. (unless it's Fellaini, who is still off).

Trio of Cleverley/Herrera/Mata?

I think Herrera will have to sit for now, similar to how he played against us at Old Trafford.

Vidal regardless of what's being written is still on the wish list I reckon.

Herrera--Cleverley
------Mata--------

Not ideal as its really weak defensively but we have no real alternative to Carrick.

Tour 2014 squad:

D. De Gea, A. Lindegaard, B. Amos, S. Johnstone
Rafael, J. Evans, C. Smalling, P. Jones, L. Shaw, T. Blackett, M. Keane, R. James
A. Herrera, T. Cleverley, D. Fletcher, A. Young, W. Zaha, S. Kagawa, J. Mata, A. Valencia, Nani, J. Lingard
D. Welbeck, W. Rooney, W. Keane

Bummed not to see Wilson on the tour. If he's over his injury, that's really surprising. Especially as we only have the 3 striking options - we're taking more keepers than that!

Also more keepers than central midfielders :( No Rothwell or Pearson, that's less surprising.

Still genuinely believe the first 6 matches shaped Moyes' future. And I also genuinely believe that those fixtures weren't completely random.

They helped to shape the narrative of the league. Same way I don't believe how easy the fixtures are this time, and how every season the 2 favorite teams play each other in the 2nd to last weekend.

Top 4 is the only goal this season. If Van Gaal can't get more out of this team than Moyes, I'll eat my scarf. There is still genuine talent in it, despite some obvious issues. We're not going to win the league and we need to spend to compete with the two best squads in the league but a solid year that shows improvement, lets Van Gaal start to influence the team and for us to start getting our swagger back and we should be in good shape.

Van Gaal got his best results with young teams and relatively few stars.
I don't know how it will turn out with United.
It's a goodthing that Van Persie is a massive Van Gaal fan, not so sure how the relation with Rooney and other experienced players will be.

Van Gaal is a teacher, he interrupts training sessionsquite often to teach, not every player reacts positively to that approach. On the bright side, players seem to learn an awfull lot from those sessions. I remember an interview with Dembele who was was with AZ when Van Gaal was their coach. Dembele was very, very positive about Van Gaal. As a matter of fact, before the WC i read aninterview with him where he says that Van Gaal is by far the best coach he has ever had (wouldn't Dembele be a player for United, he seems rather unhappy with Spurs).

This (This forum could do with like buttons for posts)

I think you can go further back then the first game and how our transfer window unfolded. no question that how bad it went it must have caused concern for the actual squad who probably felt additions were necessary.

If we sign Vidal and say a CB & Winger that will bring huge confidence in general to everyone.

Yaaay!

"Manchester United have confirmed Javier Hernandez will join the squad in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (22 July) ahead of the first game on Tour 2014."

Not really, Brown was RB the full year in 2008/9 and some of 9/10 when we were genuinely awesome at the back. Neville was done by then, even if he still occasionally played.

Think you mean 07/08.

put in a peach of a cross for Ronaldo to head home in Moscow.

Yeah, that is what I meant. His only offensive contribution of the year. I used to berate him for being United's weak link offensively, but then I saw Smalling play in that position, and that made big Wes seem like Maicon in his pomp.

It's funny, between Smalling and Brown, we've probably played over 100 matches with essentially 9 outfield players. Teams wised up too, they used to just leave Brown open, mark others. It was like the crap kid in a pick up game. Give him the ball and watch what happens :)

inevitable to eventually see Evra go after all that talk. At least he was kind enough to sign a contract to give us 1.2 (possibly 1.5mill) in return.

Great player, but was starting to fade defensively, so I guess it was good and its a new chapter with Shaw.

Sorry to see Evra leave, would have liked to see him finish his career at OT.

8 Years, 5 Prem Titles, 1 Champs League and few other minor trophies is an excellent return, I can think of alot of players that would take half of that trophy haul.

I remember both his and Vidic first game, away to City, they easily beat us 3-1 I'd never have thought they would go on to win so much with us.

I remember an interview he did around a year after he joined.
(Think it was around the time of the Munich anniversary)
He didn't realise the history the club had, so read up on it & then said it made him a fan & proud to wear the shirt.
Never heard of another player do that anywhere else, so for that alone he earns "Legend" status.
:)

Spend a few hours learning the history of a club and you're a "legend"?

All players are probably legends then, it's not an unusual thing to do...

Evra went to museums, in his spare time did various Munich related activities and generally just seemed totally into the United kool-aid. Also just seemed a bit nuts.

Not a bad trophy haul either, for a converted striker at LB.
