Manchester United Thread

Only Man Utd fans rate Evans - he's always a mistake waiting to happen.

And Rafael is injured half the time.

Smalling will be amazing player but ONLY at CB. Utd need to sign another CB this summer.

Evans was by far our best defender last year when we won the league. Agree he has a mistake in him, but so does more or less every defender in world football these days. Not sure what happened this year, but he was great last year so I'd give him a chance.

Rio is confirmed to be leaving. I'm shocked to be honest, 100% sure he was going to stay for one more year under a new manager. He's a bit of an idiot, and needs to shut up outside of football, but he's hands down the best defender I've ever seen outside of Italy (Maldini mmmm). At his peak he was possibly more complete than anyone else in world footabll at the time. He had it all, pace, aerial ability, skill on the ball and incredibly positioning - he almost went a season without committing a foul! Magnificent player somewhat hampered by his off the pitch idiocy. Will be missed.

One of the all-time greats for us. Consistently superb in top level European competition for us.

A shame he's been overused and kept past his decline in the last season or so but he's been fantastic for us over the past decade and longer.

More bad stuff from the club. Rio should have had at least as big a send off as Vidic, if not bigger. Instead (apparently) Ed Woodward told him in the dressing room at Southampton.

So much for us being different. The club's becoming a disgrace.

rio was quality defender in his prime, but he is quite old now, about 35? but this gotta be the perfect time for phil jones to stop pissin' about at right back and become a permanent CB.

I love and dislike Phil Jones for his near idiotic challenges..especially aerial ones. You can almost see the injury coming every time. We need another Vidic or even more so Stam who just keep going even when half his face is cut open. Too much to ask?

Im actually not impressed with Evans BTW..can be very solid but makes too many basic mistakes that make you question whether you re watching the same player. Perhaps its also that he doesn't look intimidating whatsoever.. Stupid reason i know.

I'd love to have faith in Phil Jones - and his list of admirers is impressive - but he's never managed 10 matches in a row. No matter how good he looks for 20 minutes in a match, it doesn't matter if he can't have the common sense not to stretch his body to breaking point.

Similar with Rafael - who last year was the outstanding RB in the league. This year he can't manage a match.

Agree rio in his prime was best English cb of all time

Woodward is being ruthless, tells Rio in the corridor at St Mary's he won't be offered a new contract. I'd honestly thought he'd told him at Carrington where he could say his goodbyes to players and staff. Today it's being reported P Neville and Chris Woods have had their contracts terminated.

The sacking of Neville has shocked many key personnel at United. I'd thought Neville would stay along with Giggs for LVG.

Good moves from Utd. Phil Neville way out of his depth, Man Utd isnt a college for underwhelming coaches!

RE: Ferdinand. Best CB I've ever seen in the Prem League. Stunning player in his day.

The Rio situation is harsh, he should have known his future before our last home game let alone the final game at St Mary's.

Neville in all honesty makes sense, he was a David Moyes signing and if it means Gary will have slanted view on everything we do going forward probably for the best.

Hopefully Giggs is retained under LVG.

Honestly it doesn't bother me, Legend he is but whatever LvG see's fit is the way we should go.

Manager should have total control.

Not really, Fergie was the last of a few who had total control but even he technically delegated a lot in his last few seasons.

Most of Europe these days use a Sporting Director or someone with a similar title in conjunction with a Head Coach, like Klopp at Dortmund. It certainly an option and something that should be explored more often given the old outdated British model of given the manager all control.

Looks like more clever ploys from Ed and co. I think Ed wants Anchelotti, and is tryin to string along LVG til after the CL final.

And if Ed's track record is anything to go on, he'll miss out on both and we'll have Sam Allardyce come in on August 6th.

Ok God please no. Them bringing in Sam wouldn't even surprise me at the moment.

Btw Gerd: ha indeed. Only thing is that I can see LvG ending up in an open power struggle with the execs at Utd.. Including SAF.(though in all fairness they could probably use the proverbial kick in the rear)

Oh agreed but what I mean is SAF delegated to people who were very loyal to him and his methods, with Giggs we don't really know how much control 'Class of 92' has at the moment but you would think a pretty big one on the dressing room.

As long as LvG is supported by people he trusts then were fine rather than being trusted upon him leaving everyone looking over there shoulder.

Mark Ogden and Ian Ladyman have inside info - the Van Gaal deal is as good as done and has been for quite some time.

Giggs is flying out to meet LVG today apparently.

Have patience, Utd friends.

Photos of Giggsy in Holland. Does seem a clue, to be fair.

Someone needs to modify the LFC boom bust cycle for us. I'm getting excited about the season now.

Wasn't any doubt for probably a week now that LvG is the man, just when are we going to announce it.

Someone suggested with Giggs meeting today, I could see Giggs officially retiring being the next statement to come out the club.

So we surprisingly made the U21 final again this year, despite our reserves basically all being out on loan. But credit where it's due, what a turnout!

We're playing Chelsea who have an excellent youth team (even if none ever make it to the full team) so can't expect too much, but t least we're in 1 final!

Yeah, ideally we need a fresh start and proper rebuilding. A large personality should be able to be fully respected by the dressing room and not influenced by potential outside interference like Fergie or the '92 lads, which is why I think van Gaal is ideal for us given our current situation.

Utd's current wage bill revealed to be 213.6m. Around 220m if you include Moyes' payoff

Players leaving will bring it down but obviously they'll need replacing.

Apparently there were a ton of bonuses last year around the league win. Not good.

But, in a matter of days we've shed 2 of the highest earners (Rio/Vida) and soon should be free of Anderson, Nani and possibly Evra.

Those 5 players would in theory lower our wage bill by somewhere around 26m!!!

This year will be lower too, not a single bonus to be paid out :(

Also, would wager we're still going to be 50m behind City when your 2014 figures are released. Can't imagine Fernandinho, Negredo, Navas and so forth are on small contracts. Can't believe we're above Chelsea though. First time in over a decade.

Finally, you mentioned our wage bill being up - but we also had significantly more profits, and a record quarter for revenue. Before the new kit deal. So we're actually in surprisingly good health, all considering. That's hte worst bit. If on the field success was truly crucial to the Glazer's profits, then we'd prioritise that. But it's not, not really. The 4th place trophy is all we really need.

One more highlight from the call/report - it was confirmed Rooney's new deal was slightly less than his old one, at about 230k. Which is obviously still obscene, but shows oyu just how reliable the UK papers are. Pretty much every single one said it was a huge increase.
