Manchester United Thread

I will be very disappointed if Heinze and Ronaldo go to the Olympics. I want us to get a fresh start with Heinze even starting against Arsenal in the community/charity shield (whatever its called now). If we can win or even draw against Chelsea at their ground it would be a good start for us.

I still think Rooney is a better partner for Ruud. Rooney is a better support striker than Saha and Smith. I kinda see Rooney taking Scholes' spot in a sort of midfield position behind both Ruud and Saha.
And I hope Fergie pushes Smith to be a better player cuz then we'll also have someone to rely on if England ever need another striker.

In a few years time, we could see a team like this:

---------------Howard---------------
---------------------------------------
----???---Heinze---???---O'Shea---
---------------------------------------
----???--Miller--Fletcher--Ronaldo-
---------------------------------------
-----------Rooney----Smith?--------

Just need to cover a few places here and there but we've still got atleast 4 years before we worry about that.

Well Heinze is about the same age as Rio, Silvestre and Brown so you can include them in that team too really, although things change quickly in football as we all know.

Did you guys see sir Bobby Charlton play with the Figo XI? He got in a couple of good crosses. Naturally he fell back from CF to DMF after a few minutes.

Eh? isn't Bobby about 106 years old?

That's why fell back to DMF when he came in as a striker.

I don't think we need Rooney...YET. Scholes, Fletcher, Miller and to a certain degree Smith can do Rooney's position (just behind the strikers). Scholes is not past it yet (he's only 29), Fletcher did really well last season, Miller is talented (and needs games) and Smith is also good in that role.

So its not a case of Rooney or die. Plus...do we really want another eye-catcher name (like Beckham). Every United game would be based on Rooney (from a media view).

I just don't think we're ready for him yet. Maybe in another one or two seasons.

I agree Gazz.
Maybe after two seasons he'll justify his huge price tag, and maybe by then we could actually use him.

i saw on manu.com that Denis Irwin calling Liam Millier a possible replacement for Roy Keane. Is he highly rated over there in the UK? Over here in asia, we do't know much about him other then from what we know in Champ Man. Maybe our UK friends can tell us more about Mr Liam Miller

Fergie lands Wayne
Sir Alex Ferguson has pulled off a top secret move to sign Wayne Rooney on the cheap…and Everton are furious. Rooney is on his way to Manchester United and the timing of the move is highly significant. Sir Alex is playing a shrewd waiting game to ensure the prices comes down and then he will pounce, even if he has to wait for a year to get England’s boy wonder.

Rooney rejects Everton
Wayne Rooney will formally reject Everton's offer of a new contract this week - and plunge the club even further into crisis. Goodison boss David Moyes was last night locked in emergency talks with supremo Bill Kenwright about his own future. And both men were facing the bombshell announcement from Rooney that he will not be signing a fresh five-year deal worth £50,000 a week - and will spark a £40m transfer scramble for his services between Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Corker Keane
Roy Keane made an emotional return to Cork last night. The Manchester United skipper delighted a 7,000 capacity crowd as he played in his home town for the first time in 13 years. Keane, untroubled by his recent knee problems, said: “I’m happy to be back playing on a pitch I know so well.” United went on to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Mads Timm and Kenny Cooper.

Villa nip in for Fergie’s Forlan star
Aston Villa are trying to sign Diego Forlan from Manchester United in a shock one-year loan deal. Chairman Doug Ellis has opened talks with opposite number David Gill about the ambitious swoop for the unpredictable Uruguayan striker. Ellis wants explosive Forlan to stay at Villa for the whole campaign, covering for injured Juan Pablo Angel before possibly partnering the Columbian in a South American front line pairing. Forlan will be allowed to leave by United, who wanted him to be sold but may now consider the loan option in the last year of his stay.

Boro in Butt bid
Middlesbrough have revived their interest in Nicky Butt after failing to land any of their top midfield targets. Boss Steve McClaren wanted the Manchester United ace in January but lost out after Birmingham bid £5.5million. That deal fell through and he now wants Butt on loan.

Everton to go back for Butt
Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt will be back in the frame for a move to Everton once Wayne Rooney confirms he is not willing to sign a new contract. Everton boss David Moyes would prefer a player-plus-cash deal for Rooney and will hope Butt lowers his wage demands.

Vieira in Man U deal
Patrick Vieira sensationally ‘signed’ for Manchester United three years ago in a secret agreement. The Arsenal skipper’s former agent Marc Roger completed top secret negotiations on the player’s personal terms with the Old Trafford giants in 2001. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was convinced that he had landed the French midfielder but the Arsenal board refused point-blank to do business.

Bruce wants to be England manager
Unless you speak with a foreign tongue, or glow from a year-round tan, the big clubs don't want you. England have Sven. Both Chelsea and Liverpool went abroad for their new bosses. There are just eight Englishmen doing the job in the top flight. One of them is Birmingham City's Steve Bruce, whose managerial passport has stamps from Wigan and Huddersfield rather than Milan and Madrid. But his dream job is ... to manage his country. "Look, I've read things, but just being associated with England bewilders me," he admits. "There's no-one prouder to be English than me. It would be every Englishman's ultimate job to be manager of the national team. If there ever comes a time, how could you refuse?"

yeah he looked okay in that game, I saw signs of promise from him last year but he never really got started, hopefully he'll have better luck with injuries this year and add abit of brazilian magic to our side.

Seems like the goons are having a hard time at the mo as it looks as though Viera's had enough and decided to go Madrid for a proper stab at CL footy, whether its paper talk remains to be seen as reports from in and around highbury dont sound to promising, well if your a goon.

If it does happen, IMO the goons are gonna be worse off than when we decided to sell Beckham.

Time will tell.............

Arsenal will miss him like crazy. Shame he aint on Utds books.

And yeah...Liam Miller is an excellent player. Seen him many times due to watching the SPL week in week out due to the fact that I am a Rangers supporter and he is very good. He is like what Roy Keane was when he used to make those bursting runs into the box.

if miller is anything like Keano as a player i will be a very, very happy guy :D

So the American tour soon. Looks like Fergie is going to give the youngsters a few games. Should be good. :D

Arsenal's Edu Offers Inspiration For Kleberson

Inspiration for United's Brazilian midfielder Kleberson to overcome a disrupted debut season arrives in the form of an unlikely source; Highbury.

Kleberson says Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Edu, who gradually adapted to life in the Premiership to become one of the league's most consistent performers, is his inspiration to surmount his first season at Old Trafford.

The £5.93m signing had to deal with injuries, becoming a father and adapting to a new style of football, culture and language in an inevitably tough first season.

However, Kleberson is convinced he will improve this year, and played down rumours he is set to join Bundesliga champions Werder Bremen on loan.

"I know Edu's problems,” Kleberson is quoted as saying. “He has told me about his struggle. It was similar to mine in the way he arrived in a new country and then got injured. But now I look at Edu and he’s one of the big stars in the Arsenal team. His story is my inspiration.

"Edu and Gilberto helped me a lot during my first season. They phoned and we spoke to each other. Off the field we have become good friends and we try to help each other. But when we cross the white line and we kick off, we are just football players. Each one plays for his team like enemies.”

"I look at Edu and he's one of the big stars in the Arsenal team. His story is my inspiration."
Kleberson

Kleberson’s introduction to the rivalry between United and Arsenal was less friendly. The Brazilian watched the fiery 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in September from the safety of the stands.

"I was injured and wasn't even on the bench, but that was my first experience of the rivalry between the clubs. It was very interesting to see.”

Kleberson made 14 starts for United last season, but believes he is ready to step up to a more involved first team role.

"My immediate future is at Manchester United and I don't think of anything else,” Kleberson says, responding to speculation linking him with a loan move to Werder Bremen.

”Everything is ahead of me. The worst that could possibly have happened has already happened. The settling-in time is over and now I am looking forward to the future.

"I think I've adapted well to a new life. I took advantage of my injruies to learn about the English culture and liftestulle. I have got to know Manchester and it is a beautiful city with extraordinary people. My son is a Mancunian - he was born in the city in November.

"Even the weather doesn't bother me. Maybe it rains a bit too much, but I'm from the south of Brazil and it can be cold there too.”

Spector set for Reds chance

Sir Alex Ferguson believes American teenager Jonathan Spector can benefit from the need to prevent Manchester United's international stars suffering a mid-season collapse.

Spector will return home next week as part of a depleted United squad which will complete a three-game, 10-day US tour which launches a demanding pre-season programme.

The 18-year-old defender enjoyed a hugely-impressive debut season at Old Trafford, forcing his way onto the bench for the Premiership trip to Blackburn last May and is now being earmarked for the kind of progress that Darren Fletcher made after he went on United's previous tour to the States 12 months ago.

Ferguson has already decided the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers will not be on the trans-Atlantic flight on Wednesday following the rigours of Euro 2004.

And while the absence of so many established stars will make the games against Bayern Munich, Celtic and AC Milan so much tougher, Ferguson knows it also provides a golden opportunity for some of his younger players to stake a claim for a first-team shirt.

Hopeful

"Last season Darren Fletcher came through on the US tour and hopefully one or two will do the same this year," Ferguson told MUTV.

"Jonathan Spector and Phil Bardsey will enjoy it and hopefully it will push their careers on a bit."

Ferguson has refused to bend on his policy of giving all his players a full four-week summer break, something the Scot believes is absolutely essential to ensure they can get through an exhausting domestic campaign.

A long-time champion of a winter break, Ferguson claims it is the demands being placed on top players both at club and international level that contributed to the below-par showing of so many top-ranked nations in Portugal.

"England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain - they were all disappointing," he said.

"You have to look at what kind of season those players had and how many games they played. Playing in the heat must take it out of you as well, which is why I have given our international players an extra rest.

"I have to take the long-term view and give them a proper rest. If I didn't, they would just collapse during the season."

Erm, i have a few questions for the game between us and you. Ronaldo is not going to be available (olympic team for portugal), so whos going to take his place, Solskjaer? Anyway, and whos going to be in the centre of defence because i heard Heinze was one of the overage players for the Argentina olympic team. Or did he not get chosen?

Well Ole has been left out of the USA trip with injury, as you say Ronnie is at the Olympics.

So either Smith or Miller will play out on the right if Ole doest make it, both can play there although Fergie did say he plans on playing Smith as a CF.

Heinze isnt going to Athens now, if everyones fit he's gonna be battling with Sheasy for LB position. Brown and Silvestre will be CB until Rio's back to fight for his place.

Not long to go now, I cant wait, shame we're away but in the past thats gone in our favour against you's so I'm optimistic.

Fuck me!! Ronaldo aint coming to the US??? And Ole is out, too. . .

Who else is not coming? I was excited as hell for this Saturday cuz I got some badass seats to the Bayern Match. :x

BTW. . . if anyone is looking for great seats, my buddy is selling two center seats in the lower level for about $350 per ticket. . .

Well Ruud, Ronnie and Scholsey are given extra time off after the Euro's and now Ole and Miller are staying here for fitness tests.

The two Nevilles and Saha are flying out today or at the weekend, so we're gonna have a decent team over there, just missing some of the bigger names, also young Jonathon Spector and Chris Eagles have made the trip cos they'll get a good chance to show the worth, it'll be good for young Spector as its a chance for him to go home and see United life outside of Manchester.

IMO its better to see the players we dont know much about rather than the players we already know about.

I heard its pretty much sold out though....

I'm pissed anyway. I can see the young talent when it emerges. I live in the fekkin' US,man!!!! I cant see Ruud, Scholesy, and C.Ronaldo except for once a year if I'm lucky.

This has pissed me off something fierce :x . All the other teams are bringing their big guns.

UGH!!
