Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

It's just woeful. It's just as bad as 6 years ago, when Fergie was keeping faith with Kleberson and Richardson.

If we had any other manager they'd be under real pressure. Obviously Fergie has earned the right to piss about as he sees fit, but if I hear him say one more time that we don't need to strengthen our midfield, I may wonder if he's lost it.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Yeah he should've definitely strengthened the midfield. He has only himself to blame. Especially since him and the fans were celebrating pretty much when the draw for group stages was made and thought they're already through pretty much. It's never that easy! Basel was seconds away from beating United at Old Trafford so to do it at home was never mission impossible.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Reds fans are crying, crying blues fans ... Manchester is in mourning ... :) Good luck in the Europa League. ;)

Sorry for my arrogance, but it's just fantastic. :D

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Son : dad , dad Barcelona destroy Manchester United
Dad : no , no it was Basel not Barcelona :LMAO:

it was all about they shirt's , Utd still have fear from that shirts :P

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Damn it was bad. So bad. It will be so weird to support United in Europa League.

Erm, okay. Not sure what bone you have to pick with United fans, but if gloating at someone else's misfortune gets you through the day, then by all means.

that just shows how stupid this competition is..instead of making one huge competition, they make two..and everyone know´s CL is the best.. for teams who play mostly in CL, Europa league is less than domestic cup imho..

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Methinks this could be the problem - since the Glazers took over Net Transfer Spend (6 years):

1. City - £437m
2. Chelsea - £145m
3. Liverpool - £84m
4. Tottenham - £76m
5. Villa - £68m
6. Sunderland - £63m
7. Stoke - £61m
8. United - £57m

I mean, what can ya do?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Money is a bit of a side issue, I note that Arsenal are not in that list yet they made it through a far harder group. On paper APOEL had a harder 3 teams to play (with Zenit, Shakthar and Porto (all have won the Europa League in the last 2-3 years) yet they didnt spend anything like that amount of money and made it through top of that group.

I think the problem is you (probably your manager) didn't take the opposition seriously enough this year. On paper the group was easier than other groups, but Benfica are reasonably dangerous team and have some talented players. Basel are not a team that will light up Europe, but they are well organised and hard to break down. Otelul were not great at all, but even at home you kind of limped past them without really convincing. Some of the players you used in the group stage (Macheda and Evans) are more like Carling Cup players, not really to be used in an active game of a CL (fair enough if you had qualified and it was the 6th game, but in crucial games they're too weak). For all Wesley Browns errors and John O'Shea criticism I think would have added a bit more experience to the back line. Smalling and Jones might become good players but their lack of CL experience left you a bit short. Ferdinand is a bit injury prone, Vidic had a red card and got injured tonight, you were left with Johnnie Evans as cover.

Also Lindegaard looked far more assured in the European games he played than De Gea. He played very well in away matches in Romania and Lisbon, only let one in. Yet De Gea in his four games let seven in and didn't look anything like as commanding as Lindegaard.

money is fine, but it don´t guarantee you success..

that's only because CL clubs get more MONEY, from sports point of view Man UTD lost a chance to win CL but now has a good chance of winning Europa League. Without some fresh blood they wouldn't stand a chance against Real or Barca who play at much higher level.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

A centre midfield of Park, Giggs and Jones? Isolate Rooney upfront on his own? I wonder whos bright idea that was? Rather than players i think we need a brain on the coaching staff...whats Queiroz up to nowadays

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I dont even know where to begin...It has been disappointing for quite some time now.I wont even dare to call it a bad patch because normally, teams bounce back from bad patches. It was our pedigree that carried us through those 1 nil wins...not form.

Losing Nemanja Vidic is probably the biggest blow here. Now we have to rely on Ferdinand and Evans? So many problems but Sir Alex and his manangement team still have faith in the squad...totally unacceptable.I am gonna lay off for a while...at least till January.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Yeah, we're looking pretty beaten up at the moment.

Vidic, Anderson, Cleverley, Hernandez, Berbatov, Rafael, Fabio all out for a while - that is some serious talent to be missing. Combined with the relatively decent injuries to Young, Smalling and Welbeck, you just wonder what is going on.

Clearly not our year.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I take it United wanted to get knocked out seeing as they 'do what they want' all the time?!

Way too arrogant imo. It will (or it should) give them a kick up the ass though and I wouldn't be surprised if they do what they usually do and go on to win the league.

What's happened to Rooney? He was invincible at the start of the season??

Having his inevitable, predictable huge loss in form like he does every season.

Seriously don't understand why it happens but his mentality must be absolutely shite.

£200k+ a week and he misses sitters and plays shite in games we seriously need our best players to stand up in. Rubbish.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Clarkson: I'd take all the Manchester footballers outside and shoot them in front of their families, but I can't, as the Gunners are in Europe!

Okay, not anymore, just yesterday was a special day, full of sensationalism and miracles. :P

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Its not a money issue nor the quality of the overall team, it's a combination of naive youth (Smalling had a bad night but im pretty certain hes going to be brilliant same goes for Jones and a lot of the youngsters IMO are top talents) and more importantly (the pressing issue of today) the experienced lot not being upto the pressures of the challenge to carry the younger lot through it.

I mean Rooney, Giggs, Evra and Ferdinand were the issue as they simply didn't step up and they really should have! combine that with the gaping hole in midfield is were I see problems which is my concern. I mean I think Rooney is a wonderful player but I do think i've come to the point to say he's not "talisman" material even if he has the ability to produce on occasions he is better of being a the sidekick and Nani while having become also a wonderful player (and IMO prove to be the better player) is still not quite capable at the minute to produce on these big nights any more than Rooney.

I think the decisions is we either stick or twist really, we sit through the next 2-3 seasons while being able to challenge for the lot but not quite being near the best or we squander a bit and promote the youth further and flog some biggish names and reinvest some of that in midfield and hope some attacking talent can make that step up to carry us on the bigger nights.

Very well said.

I second that.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I guess you're right to an extent - our team is still plenty 'expensive' enough to qualify from that group. It was a series of pretty bland performances combined with individual errors that resulted in us going out.

My money comment is more about the fact that we're no longer a truly great footballing team. We may have the highest brand recognition in the world, the most fans and the highest non-TV revenue of any sporting franchise in the world - but because of our owners (and the FA/ UEFA/ FIFA for allowing it to happen) our actual performance cannot reflect this.

Football success is about money. Because of the broken system in which it exists. And we have spent less than Stoke and Villa in the past 6 seasons. Why is our midfield weak? Because we couldn't afford Sneijder, got out bid by City for both Silva and Nasri and got outbid on Modric too.

Why are we relying on Macheda when we need a goal? Because we are forced to trust in youth.

We're are being forced into becoming the next Arsenal. Which is great, if we played like they (sometimes) do. But it's pretty galling to think that since the Glazers joined we have paid over £500m on their ownership.

We're second in the league, and a decent outfit - but imagine if we'd spent £500m improving it.

In my opinion fans of other teams should f*cking worship the Glazers, without them United would be a force like Madrid or Barcelona.

As it stands, we're a fading force, and that's not going to change as long as we hemorrhage £100m a year to the f(cking parasites.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Vidic out for the rest of the season aswell? blinking heck, you have got to do some spending in January with your midfield situation aswell. Bit of a shitter for us, as you will probably get the centre backs we are after :(( (If you go for a centre back?)

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Is it time to start Smalling and Jones at centre half and trust them as surely they are the future centre half's at the club.

As for midfield Scott Parker would have been an amazing buy in the summer, he would have done all the dirty work.

Shame Cleverly is injured

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

We shouldn't sign a defender unless Rio is going in the Summer.

I think some are still upset and getting carried away, were obviously going through a bit of a slump at the minute but even then I find it tough to be down too much considering how much we've achieved in recent years and if you compare the situation to 06' its pretty comparable except were much better than that team (bar Ronaldo breaking through) and City aren't as strong as that Chelsea IMO.

We do need to spend but I don't think we need anymore than 1 top CM and maybe 1 top attacking player if we were pushing the boat out (which I doubt we would).

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

We need Jones to play alongside Rio now, only he has the speed and the aggro to compliment Rio....but knowing Sir Alex...he will probably play Evans there instead.
