Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm pretty excited about the season now. Don't really care if we don't win a pot - it's not our god given right to win every year. But if we can give Smalling, Jones, De Gea, Rafael (Fabio?), Cleverley and so forth some serious game time, I'm fine with that.

Gutted about Vidic though. I definitely didn't appreciate how important he was until he came back after the derby. Magnificient defender.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

After seeing so many players injured over the last couple of years, anyone think we might be doing something wrong behind the scenes?

Surely having players get injured for so long when they're not even playing is not normal. They should not be putting themselves in injury-risk situations in practice games (not counting Vida or Hernandez's injuries which were freak accidents).

Hargo was criticising United's medical staff after he left, and now I'm starting to wonder as well. It's slowly turning into a joke. Do other clubs have it this bad?

I'm not sure, I can't think of another club that has a really bad injury record and people have been questioning the medical staff....;))

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

People can say what they want about the champions league exit, of course it is wounding, but i think it's a blessing in disguise, i think we'll play fringe/youth in europa league and that can only be beneficial towards there development

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Yeah we can't complain about the injuries, it's the same for Arsenal.

Beachryan most of those "youngsters" were already getting a lot of games, I don't blame the current disappointments on them as I've said but the experienced lot who may not be doing it anymore. Keane and Van Nistelrooy were casualties last time so I wouldn't be surprised if one or maybe even two leave this summer.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Weird game. Obviously great to get the points and score 4 - but Smalling showed that he can't handle a pacey left winger.

Anyway, Nani was awesome, as was Carrick - he's going to be so important this season.

But a home victory against Wolves doesn't tell us much. Especially given how utterly crap they were in the first half.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Just nice to get back on track.

Thought many players were excellent regardless of how the opposition played. Carrick was MOTM for me, him and Jones looked a very good partnership, complimented each other perfectly.

Nani was magnificent and because of that both Rooney and Welbeck had stuff to work with. Tony V started slowly but you could see the confidence returning, he started beating his man and he got an assist as well.

Here's hoping we build on this but games against QPR and Fulham are exactly the type that I'd expect us to drop points in every season.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Alright. 2 points back heading into the Christmas period despite uncountable injuries, blotchy form, a 6-1 and still not having a midfield.

Fergie is a friggin genius.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Funny how things can change in a week.

I still doubt City will drop 5 points without us dropping some as well.

We never get a result at Craven Cottage, I'd say we might struggle against QPR as well. We've gotta play Newcastle away in the next seven as well.

City have got Arsenal next week but it's at home, I'd bet they'll win fairly comfortably. They've got Liverpool next month or the month after at home which everyone is saying is the other time they could drop points but I bet they'll win 3-0 or something.

Might hinge on the game against them at Eastlands but they've also got much better goal difference so who knows?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

So,Fletcher is gone he has a virus that not curable. THAT MUST BE HARD TO TAKE AT HIS Age it seem painful what he has sound like a stomach flu with no end poor bloke. I HOPE HE RECOVERS SOMEHOW I'M SURE GETTING. PERSONNEL. IS THE NEXT STEP.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Wow, that sounds awful - painful and properly nasty. Poor Fletch.

I really, really REALLY hope that Fergie didn't push him to play knowing that it could hurt him in his recovery. I know he's actually played more for Scotland recently, but still.

Well this to me reads as:

"Dear major European clubs, we are so desperate for a midfielder, we will give you our first and second born children in exchange for any hint of ability.

Sincerely, Gill and Fergs"

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

So for the time being
jones, carrick, park giggs gibson? Jesus Christ injuries have been horrendous this year.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Banega's contract is up soon isn't it?

We've not had tons of luck with the Argies unfortunately. I fear Fergie might feel burned by his experiences with Heinze, Veron and Tevez. Then again, having seen us miss out on Silva and Mata recently, I wouldn't argue with someone from La Liga.

This really is the crux of the problem - there isn't an outstanding option readily available.

In a perfect world, I'd loooove Goetze, but think he's keen to be another bench warmer at Madrid alongside Sahin. Plus Arsenal apparently made a sizeable (bigger than what we have) offer and it was rejected.

Schweinsteiger looked reasonably realistic a few months ago when his brother was chatty about United, but he's now signed up for life more or less.

There are the young English folk like Rodwell, but I haven't seen enough progression from him since he was awesome at 18.

Some 'out of left field' options are:

Magnus Eikrem - our former ressie star picked up young player of the year in Norway this season while leading his team to the league title. A United fan through and through and wouldn't cost much (we may even have some buy back)

Sir David Becks - Not up to much and could be a Larsson style few month gig. Obviously not a long term or brilliant option, but his shirt sales alone would probably give us the money to buy an actual new midfielder in the summer. He'd probably play for free for us too.

Fellaini - He's one of those players that has always done well against us, which is something Fergie often looks at. Plus he isn't as old as he looks and is actually reasonably talented.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I think Fellaini is a very good player even after that horrible injury and the lost weight and can become a monster over next couple years.

I think he would improve United as most other teams but yeah either way I wanna see someone like Banega in United! He would run the show and SAF would slap some sense and in-still right attitude in him. Get the best out of him. He can be their new Paul Scholes.

p.s. Carrick will be KEY now! And Fletcher even though he's not the player he was a couple years ago is a big loss!

p.p.s. Phil Jones is destined for greatness! Welbeck and Smalling and Cleverly probably too but this guy especially! This one I have no doubt about! Funny thing is, I think he can do a great job in numerous positions but I wouldn't be surprised, if he ends up as a midfielder after all and one of the world's best at that!

Wow, certainly appreciate the optimism!

Agree Banega seems the best combination of price/ ability/ age - but Fergie has never been one to buy the obvious.

Just really hope we end up seeing in January, not the last day of August...

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I would love Banega, perhaps the complete lack of interest/rumours linking us with him means exactly the opposite and we might buy him?

Wishful thinking I know.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

So, relatively good draw imo against Ajax. Legendary team, obviously, plus a great one so we shouldn't 'take it easy'. Further, Amsterdam is one of the closest possible places we could have played.

Finally, it means Fergie and co will first hand get to see Christian Erikson...hrm...

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Erikson looks a great talent but he's more of an out and out number 10.

There's not a great deal of proper CMs around who we'd have half a chance of acquiring. I blame Gary Neville for messing up the Ramsey deal. :P

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Banega, its going to happen.

Crossing fingers...

Would love to see Pogba get some time this weekend. He was excellent against Liverpool reserves yesterday (and we won 4-0 :) )

That Raheem Sterling for them is a talent. Kid is rapid and skilled. Will be interseting to see if he's strong enough for the prem.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Meh, theirs no point though Metallica, I'd rather stick to Europa simply because we didn't deserve to go through. imagine if we went on to win it? it would be MASSIVELY tainted so theirs no point.

Its just the media overplaying it IMO anyway.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I agree the media are overplaying it, just because Celtic got a reprieve because of FC Sion fielding ineligible players, but UEFA threw them out for breaking competition rules. Bayern Munich would probably benefit from this by receiving a bye as Basel couldn't fulfil the fixture, and Man U would still have to face Ajax as planned.

I doubt FIFA would carry out the threat anyway. There would be a huge fallout and counter-threats from the SFV and their clubs in the Swiss courts (Basel being one of them). And besides, with Blatter's track record, he will let his fellow countrymen off with a slapped wrist.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I wouldn't want to get into the CL via some weird loophole. That sucks for Basel too - they deserve to be there and the Sion thing is nothing to do with them.

In other news, SAF has basically called Pogba out on the manutd.com website. He says we've offered him a deal and would like to sign him long term, but that Pogba and his agent seem to be looking for more money elsewhere.

That blows my mind. The kid is just 18, has played 2 professional matches in his career and thinks that deserves some massive pay rise? Just says so much about players these days.

Worst part is that he has the same agent as Balotelli. So I'm sure his agent will tell him that he could get a massive pay day by switching to the massives at City.

It just frustrates me - as a youth junkie (sounds wrong) I've followed Pogba's progression excitedly for 2 years now and just as he gets his chance to fill our gaping hole in midfield, he might leave to get an extra 10k a week at 18. Ffs. Wait 3 years and when you've earned something, look for money then.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

And we're back where we belong, temporarily at least.

Great performance in a game I could've imagined us drawing or losing.

Carrick was again absolutely magnificent and his goal was something we've not seen from him in a long, long time.
