probably he was thinking and me personaly as well..that we dont need those players to beat that team at home...

we should have won without a question..the players are paid for this, to fight, to win..this kind of matches.. becouse we should have our reserves in other quality as low league first team players...but yesterday proved that even with some national players we could not achieve 3 points...it is a disasteur imo... for this club..but not as big disasteur as the liars that own our club.

the Northampton players are paid for it as well mate, and they are a proper team full of players who play regularly and in the correct positions. You can't expect a team of reserves and players out of position to win simply because some of the individuals are big players, we should have had more experienced players out there who can take these games by the scruff of the neck. Pacheco, Wilson, Kelly, Spearing, N'Gog, Eccleston, Ince, Shelvey etc. can't do that. There was too many inexperienced or players who have hardly played recently on the pitch for us.

Northampton will have seen that team and thought "we can do this" and when they've seen the bench they'll have thought "lets peg them back and fight, they'll tire and there's noone on the bench who can win it for them".


I don't agree with this "we are Liverpool - that's enough for us to win games" attitude, the players who started and who were on the bench were not good enough but they're not our first team, basically Liverpool Reserves went out of the Carling Cup yesterday.

imagine Arsenal, Chelsea or United reserves or this teams mix up similar team of youngsters + 2-3 internationals..wich we have 4 considering Jones as Australia GK..

i bet my money on all this teams wining against Northampton.

lol now i think we had more internationals than that..with Agger, Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Babel, Jovanovic... not talking about young internationals like Kelly, Shelvey, Ngog, Pacheco...

You're still thinking of individuals though, i'm talking about the team. It's a bunch of players who have never played together, doesn't matter what level they've played at in the past (and i'm sorry but Lucas has only played for Brazil in friendlies and in Olympic (i.e. amateur leve) matches, so he's not a regular international player). When there's youngsters playing in positions they don't normally play in you're asking for trouble, we had Wilson and Pacheco out of position, Wilson's positioning cost us a goal and Pacheco was pretty invisible for the whole game.

This game was down to Roy Hodgson's tactics, decision making and sheer stupidity imo. That team shouldn't have started.

Are you telling me that United, Arsenal and Chelsea would have rested all of their top players and only had kids on the bench? Because i know for a fact that it wouldn't happen. Their managers know you have to have quality on the bench for these games in case you need it, Hodgson clearly didn't think like that.

United played Scunthorpe and had a load of experienced players on the pitch, in fact 7 of their starting 11 have all got loads of Premier League experience, of their first 11 there's only really Hernandez and Smalling who you could call inexperienced at this level, in the Liverpool team there were 2 debutants (one of whom is a youth level player) and 3 other inexperienced players, on top of that there's Jovanovic who is a new signing leaving us with 6 experienced players, and even then Kyrgiakos has only featured every now and then for us.

yes it is true..then it is down to Hodgson tactics.. he is the man who should know the players and know what he was doing...it is not acceptable ...even with the circumstances for Liverpool as a club to loose at home in this competition to such small club.. but yes, better team.

I recently read an article in the portuguese press where hodgson was quoted in the lines of: "I still dont know where to play Raul Meireles". If you buy a player without a clue of what position he should play in, you're not a very good manager...

he is new to the team..maybe he mean he dont know where he can use him best in our midfield and how...he is not bad manager..but game after game i am more worried if he is good for this club...

That's not exactly what he said, here's the quote:

"They (he and Gerrard) are certainly interchangeable,"

"We signed Meireles and the day after he went for 10 days away with Portugal and then came back for two days and made a substitute appearance against Birmingham.

"He had two training sessions and played on Thursday night and he played again on Sunday so it is very early for me to make very strong judgements about where his best position is."

In other words he's hardly seen much of him since he signed so he's not 100% sure whether to play him deep in the midfield or further forward. Right now it doesn't matter where he played in Portugal because this is a totally different league, we've all seen players play one position for years and then go to a different league and play in a different position because they can't do their old role as well in the new league.

I agree entirely with PIPA. Some of these players are on very high wages and given their supposed ability should be able to beat Northampton.

Manchester United did so with ease last night at a tough venue.

Okay so the depth in Liverpool's squad is not comparable by any means but the lack of effort of certain individuals is lamentable.

People paid decent money to watch that in these straitened economic times.

I doubt a manager like Pellegrini would want to come knowing the situation behind the scenes.

And fans nowadays are ready to jump on a manager after a few games without allowing him to fully reshape the squad in his image and ideas.

Clubs like these tend to struggle in an incessant search for the ultimate manager.

Well, the quote was kind of misleading, but still. Against United it was clear as day that Meireles and Gerrard were in the wrong positions.

Gerrard is nowhere in wrong position, as long as he is in the red shirt imo... :COOL:

about the United match..it was not that bad imo.. just they scored the winning goal first...could have ended draw or we could win...we have to move on to next important match with Sunderland..

The problem wasn't the defence, it was Liverpool FC.

Torres can't be bothered anymore, it's obvious - poor sod should have stayed at Atletico, at least he would have won something there.

Gerrard has lost his pace and is nowhere near the player he used to be. He's not an intelligent player, he has always relied on power and pace, both of which he's losing.

Reina is class, feel sorry for him with that shite playing in-front of him.

What happened to LFC's having "the best fans in the world" by the way? 25,000 at Binfield on Weds night.

Well, Gerrard is a great finisher, and very creative in midfield, if you put him so close to the defensive line, those attributes are wasted.

And against United, it was that bad. Up until your goal you were doing nothing. If Evans wasn't clumsy it could've been a real bad day for you lot.

Was that the same guy who put Bent through on goal with another stray backpass and then nearly broke someone's nose with an elbow?

You should be thanking the ref for the first goal and not giving Sunderland a penalty, not Gerrard. :ROLL:

I think the ref's coming in for a lot of unfair criticism over the first goal, i just think Turner was naive. At the end of the day, he kicked the ball from the correct spot so why shouldn't that count as the free kick being taken? The ref had signalled that play could resume from the kick, it was already in the correct place, there was no need to kick it back to the keeper. The ref saw it being kicked and therefore thought the free kick had been takenm just because the ball didn't move very far doesn't mean the ref should let them retake it, if he did that then every time a free kick, corner or penalty is fluffed the taker can say "i didn't mean that, let me take it again".

As for the Gerrard elbow, he lead with his arm, he didn't exactly swing it Fellaini style into someone's face, but i've seen players sent off for that so yeh i wouldn't have been surprised if it had been given.

As for the penalty, not for me. The ball was pretty much already out of play when Pepe clattered into him, so no advantage was gained by Pepe and imo that shouldn't lead to a penalty.


We were the masters of our own undoing yesterday with yet more poor defending and bad decision making. Johnson needs to be dropped imo, he's playing like a kid out of his depth at the minute and needs a spell on the sidelines watching Martin Kelly to see how to defend. Agger needs to be brought back into the team as soon as possible imo, but unfotunately it looks like he'll be at left back for the next few weeks and that's a massive waste, he's a brilliant centre half - better than Carragher and Skrtel imo but because he wants to play the ball out rather than smacking it up the field, they'll be preferred. I know Skrtel managed to go on a little run yesterday, but i think that's the first time he's ever done it.

The midfield was anonymous again yesterday, Meireles looks like a top player, Poulsen had a fucking nightmare, i don't necessarily think he's a bad player, i just think that right now Lucas would be a better option in the middle.

Again, Joe Cole started on the left and had a pretty poor game, on the plus side Gerrard did very well, especially in the defensive positions, but he also took his goal well

sorry ... pepe knew full well his intention same with Song, he was booked. Only difference is one was inside the box and the other was near the half way line :P

What an home referee.
Everybody who knows a litle bit of football (and who isn't biased) knows that Liverpool never should have counted.
Sunderland should have gotten a penalty and Gerrard should have been sent off.
I know i will not be very popular in this thread, but IMO Gerrard is an extremly unfair player and he allways gets away with it.

That said i do hope things get better with Liverpool, they are a marvelous club and their fans deseve better than what they get now...

Yep, you should be thanking this way in many ocasions...last time the dive by Nani, and as far as i remember Scholes in derby few years ago almost slapped Alonso - knowing what he was doing...

and numerous other things..that make me wonder when United fan talks about referee help :D
