So Liverpool need wins to reach 4th place right? Thats good, they get more tired in league matches.

We just beat Porto 3-0 in the Carlsberg cup final, despite a very biased referee, playing with a few bench players, and tired from thursdays game against Marseille. :)

Well yesterdays game,you would have to say the mancs edged it just.all in all what a dire game,we should have capitalised on the early lead,but we just let united back into it,and yes i know howard webb is a cunt but penalty or no penalty we just wasnt good enough on the day,and tbh given our rollercoaster form this season are you suprised? gerrard,lucas,insua,carragher may as well not been on the pitch.and ffs who told agger that he was a long shot specialist.
Mind you i dont know what rooney was looking so pleased about when he scored he needs to take more penalty practice with the world cup looming,as rebounds dont count in shoot outs :ROLL:

And just for the record,what a nasty piece of work neville is,studs maxi in the head,and then celebrates like a demented yob at the final whistle,and this is the guy who is supposed to be setting examples to his team mates.:FAIL:

Like i say united deserved it on the day,but not too much credit can be taken imo.

and before anybody from united comes back about gerrard the other night,yes he should have walked even though micheal brown is no saint,its still no excuse.all these i have mentioned are supposed to be "PROFESSIONALS" well start fucking acting like it!

Credit to Buzzy - at least there's some balance.

Can't believe all this fuss over the penalty. It was borderline yes, but the fact that Macherano went for a ride when he saw he was beaten and clearly threw Valencia off balance in a goal scoring opportunity pretty much decides it for me. There's no definitive proof if the foul was still occuring an inch into the penalty area and when it's that obvious and profesional a foul, I think the ref is right to give it. See Bellamy, Rafael against City.

Other than that I thought both teams were reasonably dour, but I've said before that's a Liverpool 'skill'. Rafa's pool really do reduce 'great' teams to their absolutely bare minimum, and hence big games are always like this. Stuck in the swamp of midfield, leaving Gerrard and Torres completely alone as the wingers have the important task of closing down in their own half. Sometimes Pool do well on the break/hoof it to Torres and sometimes they don't.

Anyway, if you want obvious fouls - what was Torres up to scuffing the penalty spot? Is it that time of the month? For a player of his ability and seeming (when he came into the league) humbleness, it's really dissappointing to see.

I've been watching the penalty a couple of times. Stupid foul from Masscherano, but he clearly left Valencia alone when he was going in the box. So this is not a penalty.

But my post is not about this penalty...i want to talk about penalties in general. FIFA should revise the rules one way or another. Take for example Chelsea-Inter. Chelsea could have had 3 penalties in the first half alone: every time when there was a corner for Chelsea Samuel really was wrestling with Drogba...i'm pretty sure the same thing happened when Inter had a corner and it happens every match...i don't know what should happen...either they change the rules or otherwise there is need for consequent refereeing for a while...some refs who do give 4 or 5 penalties in one match...because strictly spoken a foul in the box is a penalty...and i think it is ridiculous to speak about "a soft penalty"...yeah...my wife was a litle bit pregnant...

Same goes for Vermaelens's red card...it was a soft red card and a soft penalty...no it was a penalty and a red card...no matter how soft or how hard they were...

The thing about these "soft" penalties (or cards)is that in practice it's always the bigger team that is advantaged. Liverpool fans are outraged now, but in a match between Liverpool and Everton, Liverpool will have this "soft" penalty nine times out of ten and Everton maybe once out of ten. If Everton play Portsmouth, then Everton will generally be advantaged...

How stop this ? I don't know. Maybe punishing manipulating managers would be a good start. Look at Ferguson, Wenger, Benitez...the "big" managers do it all: the mind games and the influecing of the refs...punish them consequently and they will stop.

PS: @ jumbo. I like your posts, but saying that Hansen is biased is from the same order as all those Liverpool fans who are now moaning about Webb. Hansen used to be a Liverpool player, but now he is a pundit...i guess he's professional enough not to be biased in favour of Liverpool...

Hansen was describing the Torres goal as Magnificent! (it was far from magnificent) he does go a bit over the top with Liverpool (Which I think he has every right) but he also is just as harsh a critic on them which is good. He is not as annying as Lawrenson though :))

Getting a bit sick of Torres' attitude this season. However I do understand it, whilst playing in a crap team he also gets the sh!t kicked out of him every game and hardly gets any freekicks or fouls. He says something and gets booked, yet Gerrard can get away with an elbow, Rooney can take a dive, appoligise(sp?) to the ref and yet still get a freekick!

I remember the match two seasons ago with another great neutral ref in Bennet, Torres was getting kicked and elbowed at every oppertunity and ended up getting booked for moaning about it. I remember quite obvious fouls in the box from other games and he gets nothing. In the Utd match Masch and Scholes have exactly the same foul in the same position, Masch gets booked Scholes doesn't, within a space of 5min. It's not even about the team they are playing for, as you can see it's English vs Foreign. As much as I hate Ronaldo's attitude it's no surprise these players just can't be bothered trying anymore as they get punished for it anyway.

@ Gerd, it won't get fixed, Drama brings in more money then fairness.

You only have to look at the controversy being generated by the media over Benitez saying that Fergie manipulated the ref with last weeks comments. Every man and his dog could see what he was trying to do with his comments last week and it helped his team (although he shouldn't need it against liverpool this season). He's just stating something everybody already knew. In the same way Benitez has comments before big matches aswell. But why would you want to fix it when it generates so much more money.

@ Tikx3 - Yep, it really is all about the £££s. A lot of comments aren't even controversial when they're said at press conferences, but the media spin them and make it sound like a verbal attack on someone. It's disgraceful, but someone must be buying it. Lots of someones.

Let's face it, in the UK The Sun is the highest circulated paper, and the majority of people like ITV's coverage of football. What else is there left to say?

I wouldnt care if there were 10 penalties in a game,a fouls a foul and should be punished,dont worry you would never see that many in a game,because it would send a clear message to the players and the managers would have to support it. i thought to myself years ago "why are players holding/pulling/pushing in the box going unpunished?" a rule is a rule.
and as for diving its cheating and therfore should result in a straight red card followed by a 5 match ban,and if the ref misses it and the dive is later proved then the ban is still enforced.this would stop it almost overnight,i think.
