All Cars Get “Damage” in Gran Turismo 5
ferrari-458-damaged.jpg

After spending some hands-on time with the Gran Turismo 5 demo at the Tokyo Game Show, IGN editors got the chance to speak with a “Sony rep” who was able to clarify some of the questions about the differences in vehicular damage. Concerns were first raised when Yamauchi specifically mentioned “damage to racing cars”, leaving the door open to speculation that “street cars” in the game may not be so fragile. This notion was reinforced when only Subaru’s WRC rally car showed damage at GamesCom.

Now, at TGS, we may finally be catching a glimpse of what this secondary level of deconstruction actually looks like. As you can see, although body panels do not become detached, they do, to quote IGN editor Greg Miller, show “deformation damage — scratches and stuff”. Greg was also able to reaffirm that all cars will experience mechanical damage. While this is refreshing news, the question still remains: is Polyphony Digital restricted from showing “full” damage on street cars due to manufacturer licensing issues, or would it simply take too long to implement such severe deformation on GT5’s diverse catalog of nearly 1,000 vehicles? It would be a great direct question for an interview with Yamauchi-san, but I’m not going to hold my breath… Check out the video after the jump.

All thats needed in this game is teh following:

  • GTR Evo type handling/physics
  • Day, and night racing
  • Dynamic weather effects
  • at least 16 players for online play
  • Create your own racing series with driver standings
  • Practise, qualification and race sessions in one race like the F1
  • Ability to create your own Track(Bonus)

I still would have liked deformation of the cars when they are damaged though, including wing mirrors coming off etc. Going into a wall at 100kph is going to cause a dent.

the damage you see here is pretty much the same has forza 3. car manufacturers dont want proper damage on their cars. only race cars in gt5 have proper car damage while forza 3, all their cars are just simple damage physics similar to the one you see in that video unless forza 3 has confirmed that their racing cars have proper damage?

anyways check this provisional feature list:

Love the rally car one, not so keen on the first one. That's the most unconvincing GT5 shot I've seen - still amazing don't get me wrong but something about it doesn't look right. Great though.

My guess JM, is they're taken using the in game photo mode from replays that re renders everything up a little.

Think the first pic kinda looks unreal in the fact everything bar the car is blurry, showing a sense of speed, but then the building reflection is perfect on the car.

apparently confirmation of features

This feature was first revealed in a 8-minute long interview with fellow French JVN on September 28th, 2009. At first, this news was relieved by British website Gamezine (who didn't made any interview) but following the issue of IGN's own mini interview later the same day, Gamezine then claimed the weather conditions availability was unsure.

This rumor has now been smashed by Gameblog's latest interview which confirms the introduction of weather conditions in upcoming Gran Turismo 5.

As a teaser for the upcoming video version of the interview, Gameblog revealed additionnal informations as follows:
*there was an embargo upon GT5 interviews
*European release date close to March 2010 / official announcement is imminent
*day... and night races
*rain races are coming back
*tyre wear: refining of the grip loss
*950 vehicles garage
*20 locations around the world
*70 circuits variations
*new vehicle physics
*damage deformation of each part of the car... according to the speed and the impact's direction.
*replay upload on YouTube
*enhanced GT-TV + video export from the PS3 to the PSP
*on day one: possibility of uploading a hundred of vehicles acquired in GT for PSP... to be used in Gran Turismo 5

Kazunori Yamauchi, Class Winner in the Nürburgring 4 Hour Race

nws12535864423791221.jpg

On August 29, in the 8th round of the VLN series at Germany's Nurburgring circuit, "Gran Turismo" series producer, Kazunori Yamauchi achieved a Class win in SP8 (engine "close to production" class / Lexus IS F). Mr Yamauchi had only experienced 2 races prior to this in normal cars. In his first racing car, in his first international race, and competing on the Nurburgring for the first time, this achievement proves above all else that training within Gran Turismo is truly effective.

The VLN race is a touring car race series that is held over 10 times a year at the Nurburgring circuit. Also at the wheel of the car on the team with Mr. Yamauchi, was Motor Journalist Peter Lyon, and racing driver Hideshi Matsuda. All three are judges in the "World Car Awards (World Car of the Year (WCOTY))" judging committee, and this racing project was initiated as the juror racing team from the awards.
The machine was the Lexus IS F that successfully completed this years Nurburgring 24 hour race. This is an almost stock condition car, aside from the minimum required safety equipment installed such as the roll cage.

The race itself was not a smooth ride. In the official practice of the previous day, the bumper of the BMW Z4 running just ahead fell off and smashed into the front window of the IS F. Mr. Yamauchi was unable to complete a single lap before leaving the circuit that day.
Even during the qualifying round in the morning of the race, Mr. Yamauchi only had a single chance, just one lap. But he placed his trust in his experience gained from over 1000 laps he has driven virtually and went for it; recording a lap time that is only 7 seconds less than Mr. Hideshi Matsuda, a veteran driver who even has experience racing in the Le Mans.

In the final 4 hour endurance competition, each driver was responsible for driving 7 laps, changing at refueling intervals. When the baton was just about to be handed to Mr. Yamauchi who was driving the 3rd stint, there was news that the BMW M3 that was leading their class slowed down due to trouble. Mr. Yamauchi persisted under the unexpected pressure of a possible class win, and jumped into the driver's seat, raising his pace carefully.
In the final lap of his stint, He recorded a laptime of 10 minutes, 9 seconds. This was the team's fastest lap, and is a time that is even 1 minute faster than the best time recorded by this car when it was driven in the 24 hours of Nurburgring this May. The combined efforts of Mr. Yamauchi and the other drivers brought fortune, and the team achieved the highest possible honor they could have hoped for.

On the reason for competing in the event, Mr. Yamauchi stated that "I wanted to confirm just how effective the experience in the virtual world is, by competing in a race on the Nurburgring. And that includes not just the driving aspects, but on a wider range of things including the building of the car, communication, and much more. And of course, this will all be fed back into future renditions of Gran Turismo. "

This game shows why PC gamers come across as twats sometimes...
They say PC graphics are so much better than 360/PS3 - i'm sorry, but if you aren't happy with how the graphics look in a game like GT5 then you really are a graphics whore.

....and you can play it on a machine that costs less than a decent graphics card and you don't need to upgrade it every two years.

fucking hell. where did this post come from?

Amazing how they can portray such a brilliant sense of speed in videos like this and then make a Zonda feel like a Corsa in the real game.
