Gran Turismo 5

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

I've seen that video before and it's one that instantly reminded me of why I hate the older games, turned me off straight away.

The very first instance of trying to turn the wheel shows how rigid the car is (0:07 - 0:10), and it's only when he does that turn followed by a counter-turn, making the car drift a bit, that it starts to turn PROPERLY (0:11).

You shouldn't have to initiate a bit of drift to turn, every turn. Otherwise every car in the world would have to turn left before they could turn right at every corner.

Multiple instances like this throughout the video.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Yeah but you can't comment on the rigidity of the car if you play with that camera angle, it's piss poor.

You have to play with the bumper cam or cockpit cam or whatever and it's miles better.

Plus the fact, the guy driving is clearly (as ever) absolutely shite at everything he's ever done in life.

I know how a real car looks from that kind of camera angle when it turns. I'm not seeing that replicated. So therefore, I know that it's too rigid.

You can see the car and you can see that, with a normal turn, it's rigid. With a "drift" turn, it moves how it should without drifting. It doesn't matter what the camera angle is, you can see what I'm saying, and changing the camera angle won't make the car move more or less.

It's like each bit of turning has been shifted along one. Which is a weird thing to say but I'll try to explain...

Normal turning is like you're barely moving the wheel, like you're having a stroke. Drift turning is how you should be turning the car normally. So then proper drifting is missing (maybe not with the rally cars on the loose surfaces, but with a normal car on a normal track).

I just don't feel in-control of the car in GT, it's like the game is holding me back whether I've got the assists on or not. I can't slam it around a corner.

(But I should also point out I'm not really feeling the Forza 3 videos at the minute either, I'm really hoping NFS Shift shakes everybody up. That's released this time next week.)

Well that's a given.

You seriously need to try gtr evo and rfactor on the pc. doesnt require a modern pc to run it either.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

The problem I have with GT is the wheels feel like they're made out of concrete. You just don't get any feeling of grip or suspension from them while turning.

They're realistic to the point of you flying off the track until you've played the game for a month. They're not my kind of games.

I just hope NFS Shift turns out to be something special, but the lack of a demo when the game is 7 days from being released tells me otherwise...

Lack of demo is worrying, no matter how good the vids look.

Do you like any racing games Chris? Seem to be hard to please in that genre?

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Forza 2 had decent gameplay but a severe lack of tracks, and became boring really quickly because of it. I like the game though, and also PGR4 apart from the Kudos shite which drives me around the bend. Any race where you finish first but lose is a joke as far as I'm concerned.

I kind of liked GRID but the handling was just too weird. Give it the handling of Forza and you've got a belter. So Forza + GRID = Shift? It certainly has potential!

Hope so!

F1CE was really good on PS3, but appreciate that sort of racing is an acquired taste.

Oh for the days of Indy Car Racing 2 and GP3 on PC :(

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Looks fantastic... games are about more than looks though and that's why GT has fallen flat on it's face before, hopefully they get the physics right this time.

Argh! PD are saying the game is only 65% complete (!!! REALLY??) and set for release in Japan in March 2010.

What happened to the simultanious world-wide release 'December 09'?

Twas a load of horse shit in order to drum up PS3 sales, which it didnt need, it only needed the price drop, dont even think people were bothered about it being a 'slim', but the redesign made it cheaper to produce. I was going to say its never coming out this year, but then would of been shot down for being a fanboy. GT5 will have its own PS3 Slim bundle (there was a PS2 GT3 Bundle and PStwo GT4 Bundle). And I cant see that happening this year.

Its disappointing but at least its one less game to buy, money saved.

65% complete? so another 3 years until its done then? they started making this game 3-4 years ago and only 65% complete?

march 2010? yea right maybe march 2012 if where lucky. Maybe there is a chance they can implement full damage models on all 1000 cars

It depends on what they're classing as 35% incomplete. They said the game is at a complete state and could be shipped any day but that could just mean it's playable and it has a ton of cars but they'd really prefer to offer everything they planned on day 1 rather than have to patch the game and sell DLC at a later date.

It could be that they're trying to crowbar in the Nascar license and WRC license into the main GT Career which has always been really big. It depends if they want to use those to those licenses just to give us a few one off tracks and races or if they're wanting to give us a full WRC experience and a full Nascar experience like the Colin McRae and EA Nascar games used to.

Plus get the damage model right as well. People wont be bothered about only 170 having interior damage just as long as there is a model for all care so it affects performance

I can't see them getting full damage on all 1000 cars. I think they delay is due to them still working on the WRC licence, the nascar license, the Le Mans license, head tracking and to see how Forza 3 is received and then take notes from that and improve. They also avoid the busy Christmas period.

March though is a funny one as it's the end of Sonys fiscal year so I wonder if that has something to do with it. Like they're holding off so they can produce GT5 console bundles and class GT5's sales within the next year to give them a big boost right at the start?

On your last paragraph - I suspect this is why Blur was pulled till 2010. With GT5, Forza, Shift all (supposedly at the time) coming in 2009, it made sense to move it - bet they are gutted now they will virtually be going up against GT5 anyways.
