Gran Turismo 5

The odd thing is that (to my eyes) games try too HARD to get everything looking good. Graphics are so pin-point sharp, that is looks unrealistic.

Compare that image above. The GT5 lines are very sharp, very clean etc and now the 'real' life image - the view you see is dirty, lines are blurred and imperfect etc.
It's just because is video effect ;)

Yea, I meant to say that i was aware of that (in this case) - but look around you. Depending on how good your eyesight is (and mine isnt great!) the world isnt full of gleaming surfaces and pin sharp edges.

As you move your head around colours blur and lines blur etc. That is why games that try to look realistic end up looking worse than the effect that they set out to achieve.

Getting stuff dirty the right way is really hard in 3d modeling/animation. I think a better way is to use more DoF, I do that for my work renders and it does add a more real look to the renders. But then when you are sitting behind the tv you would expect the tv to be sharp, with everything around it going more blurred. Adding some more blur to the tv could make it weird.

I know what you mean and i understand, i think the same thing on the first time i see this video, but the weather are not the same (sun wrong place) camera move alot in the car and add alot for this blurring video effect, but don't forget it's a video game, so of course look cleaner.

Regardless of whether it's 'photo-realistic' or not, it really does look bloody incredible, especially in this latest update.

I mean, compare it to what we had ten years ago:

Little bit off topic but here goes.
Just got a Logitech G27 for my birthday, I haven't opened it so still brand new sealed, don't like game steering wheels.
PM me if interested.

Ployphony Digital has revealed that there will be three circuits from Germany's motorsport Mecca, the Nürburgring, in Gran Turismo 5.

The famous and daunting 14-mile Nordschleife (star of every single motorsport game made since, oh, PGR2?) will feature alongside the modern Grand Prix track and the Nürburgring 24 Hours course.

You can read more about it and see screens at the US PlayStation blog and the official GT5 site. Or, if you happen to be going to the Nürburgring 24 Hours race this weekend, you can try it out for yourself.

"For a car enthusiast, the Nürburgring is the equivalent to what places like the Eiger Nordwand or Mount Everest means to a mountaineer," said GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi. "There is that special allure about it that you just can't explain in words."

It seems there's still no-one at Sony brave enough to tell Yamauchi-san to stop adding things to his game and release it already. In recent months, the addition of NASCAR racing has been announced, and rumours have swirled around support for 3D and PlayStation Move.

I thought damage was reserved for only a handful of cars? I thought it was rally cars and a couple of other types of cars. But not every car in the game

no cosmetic damage is suppose to be on all cars but proper internal is on selected cars.

seriously if this game don't have damage all cars I won't buy it.

fuck this

GT5’s attention to detail is unbelievable

May 18th, 2010 at 4:18 pm - Man Furismo Jive. It’s Kevin Butler’s next advertisement project and boy, are we pleased? That gives us hope that not only will we see plenty of Gran Turismo 5 at E3, but also that the game will finally come out this year. To celebrate we thought we’d highlight the reason why the game is taking Polyphony Digital so long — the studio’s attention to detail.

Check out the following screenshot. As pointed out by Jay of GTPlanet, it shows a zoomed-in picture of a wing mirror, sporting the detailed reflection of the track ahead. When you compare this to the image it originated from, you’ll suddenly understand the true attention to detail that the development team has been working for. Rendering an effect that’s almost invisible to the naked eye is just about as detailed as a video game engine can get.

We’ve also included a new gameplay trailer of the game’s Nürburgring track, which was on show at the real 24-hour endurance race, which starred Polyphony’s own Kazunori Yamauchi. Driving a Toyota #72 Lexus IS F with his team, they finished 4th in their class and 60th overall. Not bad. Enjoy our Gran Turismo 5 screenshot gallery here.

Maybe all these pics are taken at points in a race where there was no damage, or they're from old builds, or damage was turned off, or they're saving damage for E3 and so don't want pics of damage posting around yet.

I dunno, sounds very far fetched for them to try not to show off something that has been demanded for.
