FIFA 22 Discussion (Console Versions)

PCM is not for me. Im intrested in normal CM. This goal looks good, except gk decision must be an amateur level. The net and how animations were fluuuuid and natural

Investor: And the second question, just looking at the competitive landscape on FIFA. It looks like PES is shifting to eFootball free to play PC? So just curious how you're thinking about how that sort of changed in the competitive environment.

EA: With respect to Pro Evolution Soccer changes its name to eFootball and going through to play, we've seen this happen before. I would tell you we're very committed to our soccer business. We're very committed to our player base. We continue to grow that player base. We've listened to our community over the years, and we've gone out and got much of the license content that underpins an authentic football game exclusively
and continue to invest deeply not just in modes of play but in core gameplay to ensure that we're delivering the best possible experience for our global player base. And what you heard me talk about in the prepared remarks is as a result of the innovation in and around HyperMotion, we're seeing extremely strong demand for the upcoming version of FIFA, and engagement in that franchise continues to grow.

So again, competition is always good. We're always very closely cognizant of what competition is doing. But our commitment is to our player base and delivering the most comprehensive, broad-based, authentic football game on the planet. And we believe we have the best team to do that, and we'll look to continue to do that over time.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm all for new features, content and gameplay changes. I just fear that EA want to 'FUT' Career Mode.
I think that is a wonderfully succinct wording of what I'm fearing as well.

Two of the major changes for offline play in the last two iterations, "Competitor Mode" gameplay and now this system of "perks" for the player career mode, just makes me think - they don't know what else to add, so they're looking at A) what online players love and B) what other games do.

A lot of the changes aren't adding realism (like hiring/firing staff), or even a fun-focused version of realism (like some kind of mini-game version of a team talk that affects morale).

Instead, they're really outlandish not-at-all-realistic stuff, like perks that boost your whole defensive line's ability after you've scored. If you're introducing something that doesn't have a physical or psychological reason for happening, fuck that right off. You don't get to shout "realistic" all the time in your pre-release videos, and then do that.

I mean, Competitor Mode still sticks out like a sore thumb to me - if they really think that we want the AI to play like an eSports competitor then they REALLY don't know what we want. But how? They have Career Mode Gamechangers. Do they just tell EA what they want to hear?!

I found that announcement really underwhelming.

Nice to see customisation but i was actually hoping for a stadium creator as had been speculated might be included. A lot of the generic stadiums are a bit old and stale. Would have been good to be able to incorporate another layer into career mode to have to consider what to spend your money on as a club - new stand, facilities, etc and seeing how these align with Board priorities and so on.

Create a club - again its a nice feature to include but it does look like EA are basically updating the Creation Centre from almost a decade ago. Even those kits and crests look similar to what was available then. A bit of new paint thrown on.

EA appear to have a team dedicated to Career Mode but the team must be pretty small if this is the extent of the changes they are able to implement...which in itself would tell a story about what they actually think about the mode.

So yeah, what's there is nice but i was hoping for a lot more. Always the hope. It kills you...

Yea, its nice that stadium upgrades expand also to other clubs with generic stadiums. So you can start at the very borrom and once you get closer to the top - you dont have to play on the farm field anymore.

Unfortunately - from what I gathered - you cant change kits for any other clubs apart from the one you created.
Which is a bummer. Even adding third kit with existing sponsor would be huge.
Wait. Is it confirmed that you can start as a Sunday league side? is the stadium upgradable ?

National league not confirmed yet officially, not that I've seen.
But you can create your team, replace a team in EPL2 for example and go from there. Stadium and kits upgradable between seasons. Upgradable is a wrong word. More like editable. You can just select different stadium and customise it.
Same goes for any teams that dont have licensed stadium.

Also... Pretty sure the Gk blocks that if he *doesn't* dive? Shots going right in the middle where he was standing...

I 100% disagree with it.

I would rather have bad goalkeepers, than like in PES where every single goalkeeper is super-human and there is only 3 or 4 ways of scoring goal. Making every goal the same. Yeah, I want to know that every shot can somehow end up being goal (there is a chance) , even when shooting in middle of goal like this.

Between perfect goalkeepers where every goal is the same and solid goalkeepers where everything can end up being goal --- i would always chose second one.

Create a club is a great feature but hardly revolutionary so only the most partial of credit. Any mention of the team you get? Do you have to pick from the pool of players already in the game? Make your own? A squad of fictional jobbers, ML style?

Skill tree is fair enough. Definitely gamification but training (at least until I stopped playing during 19) was so bland and perfunctory that there was plenty of scope to improve.

I'd be stunned if the cut scenes don't get boring. Fast.

Perks can get in the bin, and if commentary from Alex Scott is one of your headline selling points, I'm worried.

Still, I'm so dead inside that I would accept Career Mode being stripped back if the gameplay was up to scratch.

Yeah that looked like a goal that could easily happen in real life to me, sometimes the speed/timing of shots just completely bamboozles the keeper

People forget that keepers in the old PES games made some absolute howlers, they missed shots you would expect them to save, but equally they sometimes pulled out miracle double saves etc. that were made all the more amazing by the fact they were not super human by nature. And of course, there was always the feeling you could score from anywhere, combined with proper individuality (I remember Cech being a monster).

From what I've read, you pick the star level you want your team to have, and a team of "fictional jobbers" is generated for you, with nationalities that match the general composition of the rest of the league.

I don't really know what to think about the reveal. At least they're doing something, I guess. Not sure how I feel about the perks either, seems so artificial. I'd much prefer a realistic mode where these perks are obtained based on performances, attributes, etc. Being able to pick them seems a odd but I cannot understand if you're more of a arcade type gamer.

Whats the hate for perks stemming from? Its a game first and foremost.
But it's not. Fortnite is a game first and foremost. FIFA is based on a real sport, that has a lot of real things that could be added as a priority, that would be fun too, if they cared to try it.

If you want to add this kind of stuff, you make Mario Strikers Charged. Not FIFA.

The development plan, somewhere along the line, has changed from "let's add things that a football manager does that are missing, and gamify them" (e.g. team talks)... To "let's cram in what other games have, that gets people hooked on the game" - even if it shits all over the authenticity.

Even if you disagree with that - in the interview the heads of development did a month or so ago, they said the word "realism" about 100 times. Then they reveal their plans and it turns out realism ISN'T at the heart of what they're doing. So I think we're also entitled to feel lied to.

They've gone from making cool things based on football, to adding cool things ripped from other games, cos they know what hooks people onto other games.

The medium is video games thus that is always the core thing here. Yes as its based on a sport a mixture of realism and video gamey stuff is key. I dont see a huge issue with the perks as its a small thing.

I'm sceptical about the National League too, as much as it'd be great.
The 'confirmed' added teams to the code were Wrexham and Stockport County (:BSCARF: ) and the 'English 5th division' was added too.
I'm not sure if this is actually for the career history of some of the 'FUT Heroes' like in the same way that icons have a bio.

You could be looking at a future Ashley Williams FUT Heroes card, so he'd need Stockport County in his career history bio bit with his club stats.

I really, really do hope it's the whole league or, selfishly, even just Stockport County added to 'Rest of the World' and can be swapped into League Two or something but I can't see it.

We don't want perks for the same reason we don't want Mario Kart style mushrooms and red shells to drop on the pitch. Or FIFA Street style "gamebreaker" shots after doing enough skill moves.

At what point does it even stop being a football game? They're turning it into some generic football themed combination of RTS/MOBA genres. Next thing will be each team having an "Ultimate" you can play once a match like having 12 men for 10 mins, or two goalkeepers. Second man press already has a cool down timer like an RTS.

Thats such a fucking leap. BTW im not keen on perks myself in a football game but its not as big off a deal as some of you are making it out to be.

Simply dont use them. They are giving you more options.

I think it's brilliant that there are communities like this one that put pressure on devs to create more realistic games and continue to ask for and demand the things we all want in terms of more sim-like gameplay. I'm glad you people are around because I'm too lazy and wouldn't know where to start.

However, don't deny yourselves fun. I picked up FIFA 21 for Series X last year as there was no next gen PES and I had a pretty good time. I often pick up FIFA later on when it's cheap and I'm bored of PES. This year there'll be no 'proper' PES so it's going to be FIFA again and I'm not too worried.

Yes, it has its issues and will have plenty again this year - I'm not making apologies for it, but try to enjoy it too. There's lots that's amazing about modern football games - I played the first ever FIFA on the Mega Drive and when I think about where things are now I'm more than satisfied.

I get how annoying all the little things are because they seem so easy to fix if they just wanted to, but look at the bright side too and enjoy smashing the ball into those nets, which do look nice. There's a simple fun to be had if you just let yourself from time to time.

Carry on with all the campaigning because it's important and makes for better games for all of us, but enjoy what's there too. It's pretty good.

Those perks do sound stupid and unrealistic .... I guess this is price we pay for other thing more important to grown audience (like Machine learning animations, more slow gameplay, those nice nets :) )
