FIFA 18 (Console Versions)

Always pro always as manual as I could get besides shot and pass. I am taking some hardcore L's my fellow footy loving brothers. I don't know wht the F is going on I suck. Maybe it is because all the mechanics of 16 are so hardwired into me.

I am struggling big time. I play to much FIFA for this to be happening. I am so flustered right now

getting bogged down in career mode with bochum and their average players i took a break and started to play a quick fa cup run with liverpool, all i can say if one team sums up fifa 18 its liverpool (especially as i can’t defend to save my life!!) had an amazing run to the quarter finals before dejan lovern did the usual and put me out with a dodgy back pass , the individuality of the liverpool players is the best ive seen in any football game

Another night, another bout of testing.

So here's a thing. I was reading about the PC patch, and that @Matt10 suggested that, after playing a Kick Off game, his gameplay almost seemed to "reset" to a slower speed.

Now since I bought the game and played my first few games on SLOW etc., I've been convinced it suddenly started playing faster and with strange differences.

Tonight, I played a Kick Off game, and then started a new Career Mode save from scratch. The first game I played, on Legendary, SLOW, with almost default sliders... It was absolutely sensational. The AI finished with 68% pass accuracy and it felt right. (And I scored my favourite goal yet - see below.)

I then went back into Kick Off mode to play a "rematch" of that Career Mode game, with NO FURTHER CHANGES, and... The AI was hitting laser passes again.

I've put together a video and the difference is subtle, but look at how the AI pass the ball around a little more in the first match with less accuracy, then control/hit the passes way more quickly in the second match.

(Here's the goal I mentioned... Please forgive the wailing, I didn't know I'd left that "record microphone when recording game footage" option ticked after doing the PES review...)

So I am having issues getting past players. Doesn't matter if I have Hazard, Messi, Ronaldo or Neymar, I can't get past any players. They magnetically get the ball. Super annoying. I have to revert back to the old patch.

Chris I ain’t touching sliders this year love the generic game and each game I play feels so different so would be hard to figure out if sliders were having a good affect or not.
Some times I dominate the opposition and others I struggle to string passes together but it’s because of form and other teams formation it’s great.

That's subtle, indeed. I don't see that much difference, to be honest. Sure, a few of the passes are a bit faster, but not much. Have you tried reducing cpu pass speed?

What defending system does everyone use tactical or legacy?

Been trying tactical as I find it too easy to take the ball on legacy but finding it really hard to keep clean sheets, any tips?

I couldn't figure out how legacy worked, so switched back to tactical, and feel fine with it now. Jockey is your friend. :)

I just started a career mode with MU and I don't have a clue as I've never played fifa's CM. Any pointers on:

- scouts: do I need them? What are they for? Finding hidden gems, fidding out players value or just as a way to search for players? How should I use them?

- training: how do I use it? Should I simulate or play it out?

- objectives: one of my objectives is to improve an academy player by 5 points. How do I know which players are elligible? Is Rashford elligible? What is the best way to complete this and do players improve with games or just training sessions?

What is that growth graph that shows on some players? Any other general tips?

You can't bid for a player if you don't know their value, you don't know their value if they're not world class or they've not been scouted, personally I hate this "fog of war" and thankfully it can be disabled on PC :)

I mainly use scouts to look for players in the last year of their contracts so I can sign them on Bosmans to save some money ;)

Wonder if pitch condition/ pitch wear is a factor

whats the difference between a PS4 and PS4pro for fifa? Seen game are doing a trade in for old Ps4's. 500 gig PS4 + 199.99 and you get the pro plus fifa 18 - just wondered if its worth the update? I'd sell fifa as i already have it making the pro upgrade for 160 ish

If you've got a 4K telly it looks great - the image is downscaled for a 1080p though so should still make a difference. I'm constantly back-and-forth between the two (PS4 Pro 4K / PS4 1080p) because friends have the standard PS4s, and it's the facial details for the scanned players where I really notice the difference.

Saying that, I wouldn't have upgraded to the Pro without a 4K telly because that sharpness is fantastic and once you're used to it, it's hard to go back.

Which 4K TV have you got Chris? I am in the market for one.

Check out my post in the 4K TV thread (but I haven't had much luck, players with black hair leave a trail as they move around the pitch and it's so annoying - I wish I could swap it for one of the new Sony models).

If you're looking for a gaming TV, I'd start out by looking at HDTVTest's input lag database. Change the filters to 4K TVs only, sort by lowest latency, and check out the reviews based on your requirements and price range.

Xbox One patch 1.03 out now. Weighs in at 1.4gb. Get testing, people! :D

PS4 version is still in certification.

Yeah, I agree. I notice a slight difference but it's subtle. Subtle enough that it makes me think the difference is just the normal differences between matches that are caused by behind the scenes differences in how the CPU plays.

Really not a fan of those moments when the CPU gets all hyper-one-touch attack, especially when they use the driven pass. You could use @Matt10's sliders set, which I think is intended specifically to address that issue, although for me I've learned to accept those moments and deal with them because I think the game plays really well otherwise at default settings.

Another thing I've noticed with myself is that the better I get at judiciously using teammate press, the better I've been at slowing down the CPU attack. It's almost as if AI attackers are programmed to respond differently to AI defenders than they are to us - maybe I'm imagining it but I feel like if I press with a teammate, the CPU is much more likely to stop and make a backwards pass than if I try to close down with my own player.

Yesterday I focused much more on getting better at teammate pressing, especially in the middle of the pitch, and it was my best run of matches by far with this FIFA. I don't know if it's a real thing or just my imagination.

What defending system does everyone use tactical or legacy?

Been trying tactical as I find it too easy to take the ball on legacy but finding it really hard to keep clean sheets, any tips?

That was the reason why tactical was introduced to begin with - legacy was way too easy. They key to defense is being conservative with the tackle, learning the new tackle mechanics, using teammate press to corner attackers and force bad decisions... and then when the CPU is within your penalty box, especially if playing against a good team, prayer seems to work best.

Also, if you're struggling on defense, I'd recommend playing on Slow game speed - it makes tackling and just about everything on defense easier.

Played one match with the new patch. No obvious gameplay difference to me but it's just one game. Had a great match, beating Bayern 2-1.

Not to mention it looks stunning in HDR. Summertime matches are vivid & colourful & dusk matches look breathtaking.

It does, but there are some really weird-looking games too where everything is black-and-white for no reason - they've definitely gone a little too far down the "cinematic, dramatic experience" route for my liking! (But still better than non-HDR IMO.)

I honestly believe passing on manual and even semi-assisted is a little funky in FIFA 18. The reason being is, my players suddenly lack all awareness and urgency if the ball isn't passed perfectly to them. They mull around, sometimes do that half-turn for some inexplicable reason, and just lack any sort of willingness to get on the end of a pass. I play Pro Clubs online on assisted, and I rarely encounter these aforementioned issues when it comes to passing.

I have 1,500+ hours of manual passing over the last three FIFA games, and I feel like I'm not improving in the slightest when it comes to manual passing in 18. I could zip the ball around no problem in 17, but in 18, it feels like my players are in molasses if the ball is within a 5-yard radius of them.

Is doing skills the only way to get past any defenders?

Nah, you can skin people with just changes of pace, using L1 and especially R1, and just normal dribbling. Totally depends on who you're controlling, because they've added so many new special animations that only good dribblers can do.

I will say though that skill moves against CPU defenders is the most effective it's ever been because of how it'll freeze defenders (see the video I posted in a previous post). But you don't need anything extravagant - just a step over or ball roll can be super effective.

It's hard, indeed, and I don't feel like I'm improving much either - and I agree, some games are very annoying, when the receivers of the passes just sort of mope around without a clue, even though the ball is still quite close to them. Ruins the flow of the game, but also contributes to the sweet randomness of ball trajectories and such. Even though I think the game is the best football game yet in terms of players sticking out a foot to reach a stray ball, it's definitely not perfect. I've noticed that setting the game speed to normal rectifies some of the unresponsiveness though. Just like in PES, slow game speed seem to dull the reaction time of the players, for some reason.

Shielding the ball and sudden change of pace can also be effective. Also sudden changes of direction, and just sudden change of pace in particular. It's difficult to get past defenders though! Takes a lot of practise.

Chris I think you're right. The kick off suggestion worked for me as well first. But now I think it's random because it happened again / fixed again / happened again. In all those weird fast games I'm noticing a greatly reduced feel of weight/inertia. Like CBs or other usually 'heavier' players twisting and turning effortlessly. It will be interesting to see the feedback from the consoles. Is it a PC only thing? Matt has it happened to you again?

Right now I'm at a loss. Not sure what's causing it or what's fixing it. Right now this is the #1 issue for me.

I really do not understad so many glourious comments. I tried the game and it is too simillar to other Fifas that i got bored of. What i cant't stand the most is cartoon moving on the pitch, no weight - will they ever fix this? they need new engine or what? an animation after scoring a goal when you control the player is so unrealistic. I really tried.. Sliders plus manual could be eventually standable.. i played only like 5 games. Also the colors are really wrong, day time is better, but night looks totally wrong. Shooting and nets are well done.

In career mode I offered a player plus money, they rejected and there was no way to keep the same player offer plus more money. Can you not do that?

Hi guys, wondering that so much people on fifa EA forums complain, that legendary is too easy. Can u prove that too? Because i find it not so easy. Even with Monaco, i win and get draws and evel lose some matches, so it seems to be realistic.
