FIFA 18 (Console Versions)

Haven't posted in quite a while. But always read the thread. Enjoying the game. Using Matt's sliders playing semi assist passing, tele cam zoomed fully, height as low as it goes.
Something I've noticed, the ball is bobbling quite a bit on the pitch as it wears. Not sure if this has something to do the fact I have set pitch wear to heavy. Nice touch anyhow.

Last night wanted to do a second tier England match played Fulham vs Birmingham and lost 3-0 and it wasn't just a lost it was one of those games that makes you question yourself as a gamer. I couldn't get the ball past the halfway point it was truly embarrassing. At the end of the match I had a moment to reflect and I thought to myself sure I can take that loss I don't normally play with Fulham since the 09 Dempsey era.

So from there I had to play a feel good game to get my mojo back. I went Juventus vs B side Crotone. In the past when picking teams like this the CPU AI will auto adjust and have the smaller team play like Barca. Not this time thankfully I absolutely imposed my will on the weaker side and won 3-0.
After that played my first EPL match ManU vs Watford and got a nice 2-1victory. To finish the night off I went Nice vs Roma and had my first nil nil.
I hope this is not the honeymoon period. Very good game.

Just had a derby Lazio Roma under the rain, in the daytime. Won at penalties after the extra time and 1-1 by score, Immobile and then Nainggolan. Awesome game in which the momentum realistically switched between me and them, felt like a real derby, a lot of physical contacts and battles as well, but that's what the game does best after all. Still testing sliders, the base of Matt with some personal tweaks.

I must say that when you give this game his best settings, it seems to deliver a really nice experience until now.

As much as I've enjoyed using the sliders, they seem to render the strength of your players somewhat useless. A strong player like Kane being easily pushed off the ball time and again. I tried a game with no sliders, and the physicality of players is back again. I actually think I enjoy the game more playing with vanilla sliders semi-assisted passing on slow. Gives you a bit more space in attack, also the opponent has got more sting in their attacks, so you really need to defend. Playing with semi manual passing also introduces way more variance in situations, as the ball isn't being perfectly pinged around all the time. It really makes a big difference, in my opinion.

Glad to hear everyone's enjoying it their way. Just thought I'd give a heads up about it in case people are finding using the sliders a bit too difficult and somewhat static, like i ended up doing.

- Fifa still doesnt know how to respect a small sized dribbler who may not be pacey

This statement has been a thorn in my side ever since I read it, so I'm hoping I can shed some light on the absurdity of this claim with a little video I just created. Now, this was all over the course of one half against Spurs. Legendary, a modified Matt10 sliders (with my own adjustments thrown in), and all using Iniesta. For a quick rundown on his stats, check below:

As you can see, he has moderate Sprint Speed and Acceleration, but he's a mile away from being lightning quick. Pay close attention to his Dribbling, Ball Control, Traits, and Specialties; they are important.

I thought short, "weak" players who had world class dribbling abilities weren't effective?

This is why I take umbrage with certain posters on this forum because they attempt to perpetuate past flaws to dissuade people. If this was several years back, I'd 100% agree. FIFA used to be notorious for its lack of player individuality and robotic gameplay, especially during the heyday of PES. Anyone who has familiarized themselves with the FIFA in recent times (including 18), knows this is no longer the case. As I mentioned in a previous post, it can certainly be improved upon, but the players are no longer carbon-copies of each other. That's ridiculous to suggest. It's disingenuous and shows either a lack of gameplay experience, or blatant disregard for objectivity.

Hell, within one half of football, I completely debunked several aspects of a post some posters were 100% in agreement with.

Anyone else having some issues with quick subs? I don't always get the R2 icon in the corner of the screen to make a sub although the function still works. Other times the R2 prompt does show.

This happening to anyone else?

That's something I've never felt using the OS sliders,I've used them since -14
But on the other hand,I've rarely played vanilla so have no real comparison
I usually have to do some adjustments to a slider setup depending on what camera I'm using.,usually pace
Plays one way on broadcast, and a bit faster on Tele etc

Not sure what I think yet tbh. The ball physics seem a bit weird like the ball is stuck to the ground unnaturally. It seems to have a very sluggish feel to it but that might be because I've spent the last week playing pes18/fifa17. Manual passing seems much harder and there feels like there's a button lag on all passes which isn't helping. Hopefully it will get better.

Did anyone else notice this interesting tidbit about team styles in The Guardian FIFA 18 review? It seems the reviewer may have been privy to some new info. Anyway I thought to share it since it answers some questions and speculation we have had here.

"Welcome changes are introduced from an AI opponent standpoint. Recent Fifa reviews have repeatedly criticised a lack of tactical variety from computer-controlled teams, and it’s addressed by every one of the game’s 700-plus sides being given two of 12 possible play styles. (One attacking, one defensive.) It doesn’t completely eliminate the issue, and is still an area where PES outperforms Fifa, but at least ensures career mode matches against possession-heavy Arsenal, Vardy-targeting Leicester and stoic, defensive Burnley no longer feel identical."

Yesterday I finally stopped playing FUT and did a couple of prem vs prem matches. Against Leicester it seemed they kept looking for the long pass into space for Vardy. Nice to see.

I’m only getting the quick sub option half way through 2nd half. I can’t trigger it myself at any time.

Can anyone help? Using Matts sliders and finding it difficult to cross low and hard. Double tap or triple tap isn't it, but not getting the pace I want.

an easy way to check on team styles is to see have all teams got different settings on these

if the game didn’t update every week id be tempted to fix every team in the game

Well i cant see that team id in this game they are talking about. Every team plays the same, counter attack. And custom tactics are broken. Its a downgrade from last year.

I guess when Barca was on the cover they used tiki taka for all teams. Now Real on the cover they use counter attack for all teams. Last year Reus, Martial, Hazard were on the cover custom tactics worked and every team played differently.

can't describe how good it is. for the first time in fifa i can enjoy playing with smaller teams and starting to use individual strenghtsnof some players. this morning played argentina derby, boca vs river... wow... that atmosphere.. and the match was really looking like derby, not many chances, midfield battles, you can feel the pressure of some teams a lot. it was good that i played second leg :D

Custom tactics and player instructions are the best I've seen in fifa, the players do exactly what you ask.. and what's this all teams play the same on the counter? No they don't

Completely agree. At least, I've found that if I check a teams default custom tactic, and then play against them, they play as per the custom tactic. I haven't tried radically altering a team's tactics and see if they completely change their style to the new custom tactic. I wasn't convinced they did in the demo - I've so far been happy enough playing them on their default tactics in the full game because there is good variety in how CPU teams play.

I've played matches where CPU teams have sat deep and whenever they get the ball, pump lots of long high balls forward. Others have relentlessly attacked and overwhelmed me. I've played against teams that, when out of possession, pressed my deep into my own half, whereas others back right off into their own half when they lose possession. I've played teams that focus on getting it out wide and fire in lots of crosses, others try to pass their way through the middle. Some try to pass it into the net whereas other shoot on sight from 20+ yards. I've seen a tremendous variety of CPU goals.

I've had teams dominate me early on and get 2 goals up, but when I pull one back, they completely lose control of the match and their mentality changes to resort to defending and hoofing it clear.

The physicality in the game is better than before - the shirt-tugging and squabbling for the ball is much improved and Tactical Defending finally has, most of the time, got rid of the ridiculous 2 metre invisible halo around CPU players which prevented you getting close to them, although it does still occur when the CPU is on cheaty "boost" mode.

I'm also seeing CPU players make more errors than ever before. Particularly pleasing is that CPU defenders are prone to more mistakes and not be so perfect. I've seen the CPU miscue shots so badly that they've gone out for throw-ins.

There's a huge amount of detail in all the little deflections and their effect on the path and spin on the ball.

For me, this is the follow up to FIFA16 that FIFA17 should have been. I'm not sure what patches are in the pipeline but so far, I'm happy with how it is out-of-the-box.

Did someone have this issue too? Very strange bug... It's in pre season tournament at Veltins Arena. Did not check in other modes and stadiums.

Excellent game, only gripe one had so far is that my keeper doesn't really like to come off his line for through balls, but it is very very good. I play on manual and World Class and I find it far from easy, when I first got it was struggling to get out of my half.

Very happy, last playable game for me was FIFA 16 and before that WE/PRO, so it's been a long wait. Haven't started a career yet, hope it doesn't do that thing where your players suddenly can't pass to each other and Grimsby are the best team in the world when you play them in the cup, and I'm hopeful it won't.

Was preparing myself for another year of no gaming, this has been the most pleasant of surprises.
