Got to admit, had a brilliant couple of games on this last night as a single player (immediately afterwards I played as the whole team, and can't believe it's the same game).
Started out at Crewe as an attacking midfielder, played a league game against Yeovil Town and it was a pretty end-to-end game, with our strikers (both ex-Tranmere players so I know them pretty well) having off-days. They ended up winning 3-0, but I managed to get a 7+ rating regardless, by (finally) learning not to press the stab-tackle button (which I usually "grab" with, but it doesn't seem to work any more) and relying on positioning and the pressure button.
Then, West Ham (!) in the League Cup. This is where I allow myself to go "okay, gameplay isn't absolutely everything", because walking onto the pitch at their new stadium, after playing in terrible lower-league ones with roofs missing, was an "I've made it" moment. There's something really special about it.
West Ham seemed nervous to make a mistake and kept hold of possession, but when we regained the ball, we were trying to get counter-attacks going - but their wing-backs took our wingers out of the game (plus, the manager's an idiot who didn't react to it - and I wish they hadn't removed the ability to see what tactical instructions your manager is giving out).
I conceded a corner around half-time, and it was headed away and straight out to Payet, who scissor-kicked it into the top corner. It looked just right, and on the replay, I saw something I couldn't see from my player's perspective - Andy Carroll had to duck out of the way, and the ball skimmed off his back, gained another foot of height, and that's what took it into the net.
The second half was more of the same, but during one move, the strikers were playing deep, I ran past, the markers were confused, I asked for a through-ball, it was perfect, I was into the box, I had to run off to the right of the goal to work a bit more space, hit the shot across the keeper, and... About 10ft wide of the goal. I felt sick with myself.
In the last five minutes, we seemed to be leaving more players forward, and again, one of the strikers swapped around with me which lead to some space. The ball was played to my feet (no "pass request" was needed), I followed the same path as before, thinking "HIT THE TARGET THIS TIME", and hit it... Straight at the keeper. (It ended up being the only shot on target we had for the whole game.)
That was that - real dejection at full-time. But we were outplayed, it felt fair, and it was a breath of fresh air.
