FIFA 17 News & Discussion Thread

The new penalty kick system isn't going down well with reviewers - can see EA reverting back to previous system with a patch.
I'm also not the fan of new system, thats my only negative side on the game so far.

But comparing to the demo it's not that sensitive as it was in the demo.
It is easier now to score a goal.
Also the dot on the corners do not move back if you release the analog stick, that was the case in the demo...

Played for a couple of hours tonight, and... I just can't get into it at all. Strongly dislike it, much prefer the last game, and I'm not the type to say that (I've got hours and hours of entertainment out of the last four years' worth of FIFA games, enjoyed them all despite the flaws).

On Professional I'm waltzing through the midfield, on World Class trying to regain possession reminds me of that Turkish ice cream man:

There's no flow, you're left passing sideways for 10 game-minutes at a time and waiting for options to appear rather than having the freedom to put a decent move together, partly because defensive positioning is so perfectly rigid - yes, long ball teams hit long balls now, but that's about as much team individuality as I'm seeing. Liverpool don't use the gegenpress etc...

Now player individuality - I have to say, THAT is there, for me. I tried to dribble with Milner and he was far too cumbersome. I don't think there's anything wrong there.

It's 90% the AI that spoils it for me, even when playing online in terms of defensive positioning etc...

Professional is a doddle, World Class is a nightmare. Really unimpressed.

As someone already said, it's half an arcade game and half a rigid, clunky attempt at a simulation that really doesn't work.

Fucking hell EA, what have you done.

Sounds like the old evo games when they used to come out. We'd be so used to playing pes a certain way for that year, then the new one would come out and everyone would exclaim it's the "worst ever" and "what have you done konami!!?" - but gradually you get used to it and pick up on the slight nuances of the new game.

Wouldn't surprise me if this game goes down as a classic and it's gonna have a knee jerk reaction for a bit, especially coming off the excellent pes 2017 release which people probably been hammering the last week or so.

How are the tactics and player instructions this year? Can I now finally get my DM's to just sit in front of the back four and not bomb forward

Curios over player career, still fixed contract?
No years specified?
And how's the rules to the BPL and EFL,still one game suspension for a straight red?
Usually start there and move into managerial duty so after a few seasons

How about training?
Same lame 1vs1 training arena, hope I don't sound like a hater, but that should be in

Amazing that I'm having an 100% opposite reaction to the game than you. I'll start by saying that I play purely offline, with sliders - and for me, sliders is that puts this game way over the top (in a good way), because it allows you to customize your experience to be almost exactly what you want. I bump user pass and first touch error up to about 70, shot error up to 60, and the same for the CPU. I experimented with games as a powerhouse (Bayern) against the Seatle Sounders on World Class - and the game went exactly as it should. Seattle tried to play long balls mostly, and when they tried to play short my players were either able to cut out the pass or were too fast/strong for them to get by. I had trouble breaking them down in the first half, but scored two in the second and should have scored 3. Possession was 60-40 in my favor. To make sure this wasn't just the result of my sliders as opposed to the team I was playing, I played against Man Utd with Juventus, and had a very different experience, and ended up losing the game 1-0, with them playing a completely different style from what I experienced against Seattle.

The game is even better 2 player. To me, it's a polished version of last year's game. The plusses being:

- Dribbling is much better than last year, without being overpowered. Last year I found players turned much too slowly, while a lot of the best dribblers didn't feel quite as good as they should. Very different this year.
- Defenders are much better at stepping up to cut out passes
- Everything seems a lot less clumsy
- Super important: I haven't seen any instances of a player that I'm not controlling being right next to the ball and ignoring it
- Crossing is much better
- I thought player individuality for the first time surpassed PES last year, and it's even better this year: passing, dribbling, strength, foot vs wrong foot etc.
- As with last year, the variety in everything is fantastic, shooting and passing off balance effects the result the way it should (especially with sliders).

My biggest negative so far is not being in love with the new corner system... but we'll see.

A lot of how I feel now could change as I play the game more, but those are my initial impressions. I've been a PES player for most of my life and made the switch last year because everything in PES is way too accurate for my taste (and I don't enjoy manual), and almost all shots from all players are laser beams. I gave PES a shot again this year and unfortunately as good as the game is in certain areas, the accuracy of shooting is still such a serious problem. I'm surprised I've seen so much negativity about FIFA 17 so far because for me, the game is so far superb.

That's good news on the long balls and individuality front. That should mean tactics do something.

Don't know why I'm so obsessed.

I felt like I wrote this myself lol. I really hope this is all true with the full game, especially the long balls part, inaccuracy of short passes, and sliders working part

Well I've tried online games via EA ACCESS and.. It's a speedfest, FIFA 09 all over again. Really disliked it, shame since it's not that bad offline

The CPU is still having more passing accuracy than I am not matter what team I am. I don't know with using sliders will make all teams be worse in passing.

As much I was on the fence about the game yesterday, I didn't find an issue with CPU ball retention. I played 3 career games, the first two I had 60% possession against two Brazillian teams, the third game was 50/50 against Napoli, but I lost 5 - 0 and switched it off in disgust.

Sliders had no effect on FIFA 16 when it came to pass %
We even had pass error all the way up to 75, and first touch error at the same, still CPU had between 85-93% on pass accuracy.
Don't think that will get sorted this year.

Hilarious, one of the things I really like, you dislike! Opinions! Who'd have 'em.

I really want to love the game - I have a good time at a lower-league level, but with all the Premier League stadia etc. I'd rather play there, but I just find the flow of the game horribly stifled by every team's perfect back-line.

Perhaps the way I play just isn't compatible with the game this year, genuinely, because as soon as I get possession, I find the AI running back into perfect positions, and I find I have no options.

I just can't get past the same issue as last year - playing as Liverpool against a poorer team, on World Class, they dominate in possession, and it feels like playing a similarly-matched team. I don't feel any difference in quality.

This is without fiddling with the sliders, and I will if I end up getting the game, but last year I fiddled with the sliders and though it made the game 50% better, it didn't change possession stats etc. (as someone has already pointed out) because if you lower pass accuracy, they make safer passes instead, and if you lower pass speed, they use the "hard pass" instead of the normal pass (even without touching sliders, I find they use that "hard pass" for most passes, hence the random ball physics every now and then).

It feels really messy to me, but maybe it'll be more to my taste after a few patches. I'll keep playing the trial until it expires, though!

SWEENY!

I like the way you play though @bsmaff - get the ball and dont always try to go forward, but try to build up realistically, even with a lower team. I'm the same, I reckon we'd have a good match (alas, I'm on PS4).

Nice match though.

Really glad Eurogamer agree with what I've said about the AI being untackleable (and to a lesser extent, other players). Makes me feel vindicated in disliking the game and feeling like it's a step backwards overall!

The feeling that dominated most of my play sessions was one of sore-thumbed frustration from chasing the ball. Slide tackles have been nerfed, and so all you can do is chase, chase and try to get the occasional foot in. In many matches, particularly against CPU opponents, I simply gave up - I was better off waiting for a goal kick or throw-in than I was implementing any kind of press.
Gameplay has barely moved forward at all from last year - in many ways, in fact, it has regressed.

The very same Eurogamer which scored the atrocious PES 2014 a 9/10

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-09-18-pes-2014-review

They've been painfully anti-FIFA and pro-PES for years, just like IGN are pro-FIFA. I take the big review sites' conclusion with a pinch of salt these days as they're always agenda driven from the beginning and generally talk a lot of waffle.

Doesn't change the fact that the problem I have, and discussed on here over the last few days, is almost there word-for-word in someone else's review (who's played the game for longer than I have), so A) it's an issue to more people than just myself, and B) it isn't something that you "get used to" the more that you play it.

Besides that, their FIFA 16 review, although a little harsh, is generally positive and highlights all the bits I love about the game, including struggling to make challenges and the feeling of achieving something when you score. Other than not giving it a "recommended" at least, I think it's a pretty fair review.

Each to their own of course! My only point is that I'm not alone in feeling like the AI poses a big problem in how they keep the ball so well. I'll start to mess about with the sliders tonight, but without an "intelligence" slider, I don't think that's something that can be fixed on our own.

Hopefully there's a patch or something - but then that might spoil it for other people, so, I guess they can't win. But at least I'm not alone.

Did you like the demo? Or is the full game with longer matches different? As I use legacy defending and made an "amazing" slide tackle in the demo, which would have resulted in a foul in any of the previous games. I didn't win the ball as such, but just got enough on it to send it spinning away from the CPU player.

I wasn't a big fan of the demo, no, got to say - which is why I was glad of the EA Access version (it's the only reason I pay for it, to get my hands on FIFA early every year, and it's usually got me excited enough to buy the full game).

If there's a difference in the full game, players feel a little weightier to me, and in the lower-leagues I think you can see the potential - but it never meets that potential, for me personally.

That tackle you made sounds great - and there's no doubt that the ball physics can be amazing. In that area, it does things that the competition can't do. I just wish the AI didn't have the ball glued to its feet!

We need to make difference between the people who play against the AI and the rest of the crowd who play online or player vs player.

The first group will be disappointed again, the AI is just not interesting, I couldn't play demo for more than 2 games in a row, i just got bored no meter what was the result.

On the other hand if we talk about playing friend vs friend than things become serious.
Players now move better (AI controlled) then last year and overall game is perfect.

So guys, don't judge game just like that, use case matters a lot here!

Other than the pace of the game on Normal being too fast in my opinion. I really like the demo, legendary difficulty and can see myself enjoying Career Mode and The Journey. Might convince a mate of mine to do some 2v2 Co-Op Seasons Online as well.

With reference to Eurogamer.... I remember some poor PES games getting 8 / 9 out of 10 so I generally ignore what they write about football games.

Really?! OMFG, you just made my day. Co-Op Seasons are GO!
Yeah just download the game files quick before EA notices they made a mistake. I always install the game Day 1, then disconnect from Origin for the rest of the year so they can never f my game speed up with updates.
