Fifa 11 Xbox 360/PS3

I've played loads of assisted, used to use it for Clubs, though I now play full manual clubs - on the demo it feels pathetic, and now it sounds even worse. Along with the fact that it seems that you -CAN- turn off the weighting element of pro passing for online... well that's criminal if it turns out to be true on release day.

I know this sounds bad but just go ahead and disregard my earlier comments on PP - I've decided I'm too used to playing manual controls exclusively to be a reliable source for PP's influence on assisted and semi passing. Here's why...

Don't know what the reason is but I've enjoyed, by far, playing with Arsenal the most in the demo and the full game (I've been playing a lot with the same teams for comparison purposes). Just finished a few matches with Arsenal on WC and Pro difficulties on both full assisted passing and semi games, and I seem to be noticing a decent change from what I remember assisted being - haven't been able to ping pong hardly at all (though being a manual player maybe I'm just not good at that tactic) and I'm noticing considerable issues with first time passes in general on assisted that I don't remember existing. So with all honestly I'll have to say don't take my word for it because I'm just not experienced enough with the assisted control settings but from what I remember of playing with assisted, which I have hardly done since 08, there is a noticeable difference now.

Here's the problem I do have: like you and I have been saying Rod, much of the error seems to be coming from passing speed rather than directional error. I am noticing some error in accuracy but often my passes are intercepted because they are too soft, unrealistically so. IRL first time "ping pong" style passing is difficult because the velocity combined with spin that results from a one time pass is difficult to gauge, so they frequently go astray. In the game, however, often a one touch pass leaves the foot with little speed as if it was hit by an infant, and this is the complete opposite of reality - IRL one touch passes are more likely to be overhit than underhit since the pass already has speed on it. I do think I'm noticing more directional error than in the demo though.

Still, even if I don't know that EA's approach to his is the right one, it may be that they've done enough to make passing realistic enough to not ruin the experience. I'll give the game a few weeks at minimum and wait for others to get the chance to see for themselves before I say EA have failed with PP. For the time being I'll defer to the devs expertise.

Just had three handballs for PKs in a single match, and there's still 20 min left to play! None of these were obvious, like say a player blocking a shot but all were close-quarters handballs. Def will be turning these off for PKs at least.

I don't mind having handballs in the game but my problem is when they get called I rarely know which way it's going to go - often I'm like "aw shit" then it turns out the call went my way.

Playing with Arsenal vs Liverpool I just had the first quality goal scored against me - Torres totally raped my defense like he might in real life (when fit at least). It was a great goal but disappointing it took so long to come.

Also, goal post sound is the same - it sounds like rattling tin. Don't know if you're familiar with basketball hoops with metal nets but it sounds like hitting a brick (not a real brick but a poor shot) hitting the rim with a metal net - really weird sound to me.

I'm certainly disappointed about some aspects but it's too early to say that about the game as a whole. If you enjoyed FIFA 10 for six months then I can pretty much ensure you that you'll enjoy 11, at least for a while. Certainly worth the purchase. My biggest worry right now is whether this game will have lasting appeal for me, especially in a WC year - there's just not that big a difference between them all. Of course if you're one who had very little issue with either 10 or the WC game, this game will be the shiznit.

Thanks for that. As a sidenote after the six months of enjoying FIFA 10 I really started to hate it and never played it since, completely skipping World Cup in the process. The FIFA 11 demo has been a mixed bag for me, at times I absolutely loved it but more often than not I want to break something because I get so frustrated at the robot-like AI, predictable gameflow and at times random passing. I really want to enjoy some offline footy this year so AI is massive for me, I'm hoping tweaking custom tactics can make a real difference but judging from what's been said the cheap AI tactics are hardcoded, in which case there's very little we can do...

It's good to hear about the pressure being reduced but if the AI still abuse crossing and skill moves and the likes of Xavi still end up with 100% passing after only attempting three in the entire game then maybe I'll have to focus on online again or skip FIFA altogether this year.

Just a quick question out of interest, do the AI finally do a kickoff properly or do they still try to take your entire team on with random skill moves straight from the off?

Off-topic, but how confident are Utrecht fans and the media of beating Liverpool on Thursday? Must be super confident, surely?

I'm afraid we might be a bit starstruck come Thursday. The players are saying all the right things about having respect but no fear, but the truth is this lot have never played an opponent as big as Liverpool. Our fans are very similar to Liverpool's though, so should we get an early goal or stay in the game long enough the fans'll go mental and things might get crazy. We as fans don't have too many expectations, we just want to enjoy our game against a club we feel ours is very similar to, but obviously much bigger.

Apart from that we've got a very good home record; this season we've won every single game at home (and lost every game on the road, lol). The media aren't too interested at the moment, it's all about Ajax playing AC Milan tonight. Twente also aren't getting any coverage despite the fact they're in the CL as well and doing much better too, it's always been that way in Holland. It's all about Ajax.

Your home record sounds good, we're in terrible form. Anyway, good luck!

I had a similar experience with FIFA 10 though I didn't last more than 2 months I think, much due to MM being craptastic last year. I did, however, enjoy the WC despite the usual FIFA shortcomings.

I REALLY didn't like the demo but the final game is improved in all the right areas that could be expected in 6 weeks or whatever. I know exactly what you mean about feeling frustrated in the demo but so far that hasn't happened, at least no more than you might expect in any sports game. The lack of variety and real cunning in the AI may be the game's biggest shortcoming this year, at least from what I've seen.

I'm also having trouble on the offensive side of the ball and really could use a dribbling tutorial although I don't know what I could be missing. For one, sometimes the left trigger close quarters dribbling is effective but at other times I find it just slows reaction time down and regular dribbling is more effective.

Also, don't know if anyone has notice but in the manual LT + RT is no longer called "skilled dribbling" but now it's called "free move." Not really sure quite yet what that's suppose to mean and how exactly it's different than before and what it's role is meant for now.

My biggest issue atm, however, is with pace - there's a complete lack of it in players like Walcott. Speed in general seems better than in the demo but it still is a problem for your speedsters, in that they're way undervalued. And because sprint speed does not vary much from player to player, nor from the basic jog speed, I'm not seeing the great benefit analog sprint could offer. I see no difference holding RT down half way vs all the way. If the speed varies it is by very little.

At the moment I can't find any reason whatsoever to substitute Walcott for Van Persie. Walcott should have a great burst of speed and once given room should be deadly - IRL it's dribblers like him that scare the shit out of fullbacks. In FIFA I don't feel like he's much of a weapon at all. I'm still working on it and like I mentioned I'm struggling to master dribbling in FIFA in general (whereas I love it in PES; much more intuitive imo and you can really juke the hell out of defenders with subtle moves and by using their own momentum against them). I think maybe speed players are getting gimped still as an overreaction to the way they were overemphasized in 08 and 09.

Should still be the same as before, FIFA's equivalent of the supercancel.

I'm talking about while dribbling. It was either last year or in 09 when FIFA introduced "skilled dribbling" where, when dribbling, you would shift either to the right or left be depressing LT + RT at the same time. It actually was an unrealistic movement - sort of like the juke button in Madden - but it was a nice weapon on offense.

Like I said, in the manual for the game LT + RT is listed as "free move" and in the game you no longer do the same right or left shifting movement you did with skilled dribbling. LT + RT is still used to cancel a pass/shot but obviously only after pressing a pass/shoot button.

Maybe this "free move" is like a 360 degree "skilled dribbling" in which you shift or shimmy you're way out of tight spots? Any ideas?

Just played my first game.. Man utd vs Milan, lost 3-2 on legendary despite having a shit load of possession.. Was playing at home so probably why Milan were sitting off a bit.. Ibrah was deadly infront of goal that's for sure!!

Player faces tho are pretty poor imo.. Evans looks like a bodybuilder, ambrosini has bleach colored hair, Valencia doesn't look anything like him... Surely they could of put some effort into it but o well.. It's not a huge step up from last years game but certainly better..

This is the retail PES, in Italian. Now, what I love is the authenticity of the build up, pre-match. That is superb. You just don't get that level of oomph with FIFA, in my opinion. As for the gameplay, well, other than graphically, close ups and replays, it just doesn't seem as nice as FIFA, to me. A collaboration of the best features of both games would be ideal, next year :

I'm really disappointed in the quality and amount of updates to player faces. As one of the official reviews mentioned, what's worse is the new player face tech that is amazing also makes all the others look last gen and poor in comparison.

can anybody explain what "passing power assistance" does?

i cant find what is better/harder :-)

The easier option is to have this "on" for semi/assisted - it will play just like before. The more difficult option is to have it off which means you will need to put some, not a lot, of effort into weighting your passes.

To be honest I skip all the pre-match stuff and cutscenes after seeing them a couple times. Do people really watch them all the time? Hell, even IRL I fast forward through that stuff when I can.

But I agree - man I wish I could pick and choose the best from each game. It's seems that for each game's faults the other does it just fine.

Its supposed to reduce the assistance the game gives you in passes related to power. Personally i just keep it turned off..

You do realize "on" is the old default setting, right? Off is the more difficult and new setting with PP full in effect. The demo worded it incorrectly so there's been some confusion.

What are people doing for the auto switching move assistance? I can't see the difference. I'm also not really noticing analog sprint much at all, even less than in the demo. Seems to me max sprint speed is too low, especially for players like Walcott, to take advantage of an analog sprint feature. I know we want to avoid another sprint fest like 08/09 but IMO they've gone too far in the other direction.

Btw, I'm actually kinda liking the music this year. Can't believe I said that but I keep finding myself nodding my head to the beats!

In the demo on meant pro passing was on and off it meant the power marker does not show up
So I guess it may be confusing

Max, dunno when you started playing it but basically a patch came out yesterday morning or so that changed the game from the FIFA 11 demo to something more like FIFA 10/WC. It needed the passing speed to be bumped up, sure, but they seem to have bumped up the lower end too, rather than creating more of a gap between slowest and fastest. I played one of the GC's last night and had a great time on slow, Everton va Fulham - that was my first experience of the patch (which came out on PS3 only I think??). But he's gone on to play people online and isn't happy with the patch at all.

We need another patch EA, quick.

That's because you aren't playing it, quite simply. Look vs feel - nobody can argue that PES looks as fluid or realistic on the surface; it's the small details that you only get when playing it, and whether or not they resonate with you, that defines PES.

Cheesers can still reign supreme.

Fatigue doesn't matter. Sure the bar will drop down, but they don't run any slower.

Shielding, for me at least, doesn't work. Try to shield with Cris and Messi just ran around and took the ball. Defenders are on skates so trying to receive the ball with your back to the man and turning on him hardly ever works.

Pressure is still king. Cannot tell you how annoying this is.

Add to that, attacker speed is so gimped that defenders will always catch up. Had a guy out in space all by himself and the defender just sped up and latched on to me. Which brings me to another gripe...

I don't need Gourcuff (gimped already because he's not super fast) to slow down and put his arm behind him to fend off a tackle. Just fucking RUN!

Already had instances where my opponent makes a rare errant pass, I chest it down, and his player runs through me to steal it.

Oh and fouls? They do not call ANYTHING online. Playing Online Team Play my opponent just scythed down Lloris after he cleared the ball and I didn't even get the advantage sign. Nothing.

Pro Passing, not sure if I mentioned it yet, is nonexistent online. Played against a guy with Mönchengladbach (I had Lyon) and I just had to watch as he was making 180 pass after 180 pass all while I'm trying to watch the passing lanes. What was almost the last straw for me was a play where he passes to one striker and sends the passer on a run. I 100% KNOW what he's going to do with the next pass, it's a through pass. So I stand in the passing lane because the fit is so tight that even he it fits it past the defender coming after him, he's passing it right to me. What happens? My defender, the one I'm controlling, does the "Oh, I'm sticking my foot out to try and intercept this but it's going to roll under me and between my legs" animation, and he's onto goal. And he scores.

I had 62% percent possession in another match with Lyon against Barça (of course it was my opponent with Barça) and it ends 0-0 at the half. 2nd half starts, pass to Villa at the top of the box, turn, finesse shot. Goal. Then he did it again.

Again, this is all online but whatever they said Pro Passing, fatigue, and physicality were supposed to fix, wasn't fixed at all. And if the CPU AI is as poor as you guys say it is, I don't want to play MM and I can't be bothered changing tactics.

The one thing that REALLY pisses me off is the fact that every team (even more so than last year) plays precisely the same. In FIFA 10 I was able to, with my buddy, replicate the short quick Arsenal passing at times. In this game, I have to play the same way with them as I do with Madrid, United (who aren't even worth picking because pressure negates every player's strength; Valencia isn't outmuscling or outrunning any defender), Lyon, etc.

In short, nothing's been fixed. And right now. Fuck it, not just right now. I'll go on record and say that this game is just as poor as FIFA 10. You cannot POSSIBLY play this game in a realistic manner online (since so many people seem to love Clubs) and have success. It isn't possible. You must cheese.

And WHY do they have filters in the game? Changing anything results in you finding no games still. How could they not fix this. If I play 11v11, I can't change the goalie controls to "AI Only" so more often than not I will HAVE to have some dickhead controlling the keeper. And another asshole holding the B button. And no option to boot people.

I know nothing about PES so I can't give a recommendation one way or the other, but FIFA is a must NOT buy as far as I'm concerned and I think I'll be putting this one up for sale on Amazon very soon.

They toned down and/or removed EVERYTHING that they've mentioned having fixed except for the way some players run. I will NOT abuse pressure to level the playing field. I will NOT play with assisted settings.

Sorry, one more thing in this epic rant, manual is no longer manual. I may have also said that but I'm not going back to check. I played a manual ranked match and got ping ponged as well with Barça.

Rutter needs to go.

Until this gets patched to be slower in general, with less pressure and some sense that you're playing as a BAP for Barcelona and not a faster Brighton, I can't see myself playing this. Or at least playing and enjoying it. They've completely panicked and hit the FIFA 10 button. I wasn't enamoured with it before the patch, but now... Christmas Day it's fast and brainless.

Oh dear! Sounds like the PES 2008 feeling is back

Seriously, with this patch, the difference from WC feels like the difference between FIFA 10 and WC, halved.

Switched it off and sat there for a bit, staring into the middle distance. Dumbstruck. Imagine the FIFA 11 demo at FIFA 10 speeds.

For all the talk of player runs on FIFA 11, btw, it always feels (on manual) like you have to find a man in space, but never a man who is already running and is going to break through the defence. Not in BAP on manual controls anyway. It's cos there's no difference in acceleration and defenders are so quick to respond to threats that you don't seem to be able to catch them napping with a clever pass. So the situation where attacker and defender are at different speeds when the ball is passed is very rare. The pass inside the fullback for the winger to run onto is nothing like as useful.
