Fifa 11 Xbox 360/PS3

Fantastic game, genuinely impressed. I love the feel of the weight of the players and the pace. Also its much harder on manual know with the personality, a few times ive tried to hit crossfield passes with my defenders and they are crap at it! it goes out of play! However with more skilled players you can knock lovely long passes.

Its a beast this game, a beast. Blows Pes clean out of the water and into the kids pool.

Scorpio ( thanx for messages over psn earlier btw), love your enthusiasm mate but although I can see it's a better game straight off, I can't share your happiness. I do need to give it more time and I'll be bashing it after the Arsenal game (that sounded weird). But I don't think it's that far off the World Cup game. Gamespeed is brilliant, but it's all very very similar everywhere else. Probably not a bad thing as WC I found very enjoyable. Maybe EA are a victim of their own hype machine. Spending the last few months hearing about pro passing and personality +, I was expecting more of a wow factor straight off and I was gutted I didn't feel like that. But I am noticing more as I play. But I do feel it's more tweaking under the hood than any major advances.

I had the same toughts as you in the beginning but I just kept playing and slowly it's beauty began to show itself. I for one am hooked for life (well at least till this time next year...)

I'm a bit underwhelmed to be honest. For some reason it doesn't look or feel as good as the Gamerbase demo. Maybe it was the small tv I was playing on at Gamerbase but it looked so much better, player models were much better and seemed to play much slower.

yeh ant0n. I said so before.

I'm noticing loads of little touches. I hope this continues into the final release.

That goal above is stunning BTW.

Well played both Fifa and Pes demos and liked both.

Fifa has the edge on the gameplay front, but god! The replays on PES look awesome.

Played everything on manual, but may change through ball to assisted.

Pro's and Cons of Fifa

Cons

- Your player stumbling and takes ages to recover, STILL!
- Replays at HT & FT are still not bloody fixed, wtf?
- Some passes still look floaty but not all the time.
- Normal pass a bit understrengthed on max power.
- Commentary still not excited when it should be. Dull for near misses.

Pros

- Shooting & Headers much better
- Graphics and that glitchy jerky mess on replays improved
- Goalkeeping is a laugh
- Ai improved and CPU doing tricks will make career mode more authentic.

If the full version has a good career mode and fixes the replays and some of the the gameplay niggles it'll be fab for me.

My impressions:

I'll say initially that I am coming from WC, which may change my judgments compared to people who are coming from Fifa 10. For people coming from 10, this will be a very big improvement. Those coming from WC, I don't think it will be as much. As I said when I did my PES demo impressions, I was a PES man until FIFA 08, and I've been all FIFA since then.

My impressions are after about 7 games on Legendary:

Pro passing doesn't have enough of an effect. It does have some. I actually will echo something that Romagnnoli said a few weeks ago that passing is actually too slow (keep in mind I like the slower GAMEspeed). When I get the weight of a pass right with Xavi, the pass still feels very sluggish, which just shouldn't be. Correspondingly, I just don't feel individuality in passing yet, we'll see as I play more.

Dribbling - The same really, except holding players off is MUCH better, which is a good improvement. The problem is you still don't feel enough of a difference when dribbling with a less skilled player. The difference is there, mind you, but not as pronounced as it should be in my opinion, especially after playing the PES demo. In that game, you really feel like you want to get the ball to the correct players' feet and if you don't, you play differently (ie with Busquets). In Fifa, I don't really feel like I hve to play too differently with each player, and this takes away from individuality. Angled turning, as we saw in the videos, is way too fast with no foot planting. I could deal with this I guess if it were only good players that saw this effect but bad dribblers do this too.

AI tricks - at first I say to myself hurrah! AI is doing tricks! But then I start seeing them again, and again, and.... are they doing them too often? I'd say yes. They constantly do that 'right stick up-->right stick right' move for one. It would be a shame if this weren't balanced correctly.

Heading - pretty much exactly like WC, which is a good thing. Scored a great header with Amauri.

Haven't tested weak foot accuracy- but put in a perfect cross with Messi's right, the only cross I did with his right...

Shooting- need some more time to get off proper long shots

Free kicks- haven't gotten any close enough to goal yet.

First touch - You'll see some variance on high balls, but on balls direct the player, almost non existent, esp when compared to PES.

Long passing felt pretty good - I need to remember to try the new low high pass!

Defensive lines are definitely improved, time will tell if it's enough.

360 jostling is excellent, and adds to gameplay.

Work rates... well, they work. I had Pedro who is High attack and Defense, and he would roar back to defend and take ball off people. Good to see.

Defending - Same as WC, though you will see more fouls from attackers which is good to see, when they go in for challenges. Pressure is toned down, but I hardly use it so need to see how it's used online, but I think it will be much better. Defending definitely takes more skill in PES however, as you have to time your x presses as they almost directly correspond with going in for a challenge. In Fifa it's pretty much automatic.

Individuality/Personality +: I would take out the +. There's definitely more personality, but nowhere near to PES in my eyes. From passing, to movement with the ball, first touch, it's not there as it should be. While playing PES I REALLY felt, with Xavi, I could achieve things that I just couldn't with others. Xavi in Fifa? Yea, he's good. But do I really feel empowered? I say not really, compared to any other good midfielder. Especially in the passing, u just can't get the whip on the passes that you want to, which would be fine if it were based on stats, but not when you're Xavi and the passes are rolling too slowly. As for Traits, it seems to me they are either what governs what computer players will do when controlling the player, or are just an amalgam of stats - ie if you have good jumping and heading, you'll get the header skill trait.

It's a strange thing to say, but initially now I feel like the freedom of movement can almost be a negative - only in terms of how free you feel with each player. You feel almost too free with most players as compared to PES, where in PES with the right players you feel free, but when the ball is with the wrong player, you know it. So it's almost as if what could be a negative for PES for me is at the moment, a positive.

It absolutely sucks that they only give us 3 mins to play and I will never understand why (do they really think giving us 6 mins will stop us from buying the game???) and it does take away from the demo, and could skew the rating of the demo vs. PES in which you're allowed to play a full game. But my initial impression is I'm enjoying PES more. It's done enough freedom wise to get me back into it, and the fundamentals and individuality are really making the difference for me at the moment. It remains to be seen whether this will last as I get to play the full game, but given where the games were last year I can't believe PES has gotten to this point. I think it'll be a tough competition and for many it will just come down to small personal preference rather than having to sacrifice a lot of what you like to play one game or the other.

Ok, just been told that the have simply slowed down the passes for the demo. As you will notice there is simply no 'zip' to any passes and if you miss your pass it's always underhit! Never overhit though!

So it's basically a cheap way of stopping first time passes and why manual is very easy when just using the triangle button!

I can see why people are enjoying this game now though, I mean i don't like it at all! But i can see in the demo what pleases people!

Just tried both the pc version and 360 console version and the difference between the two in terms of gameplay? nothing from first impressions.

they both play identical. passes, shots, player animations, pace etc all identical from what i have experienced so far.

One thing i must note about fifa 11 on pc is that it looks a lot better than the console version and my framerates are stupidly high. im talking 200-300 fps!! The game engine seems that it could even play on my freaking laptop on the highest details!

the game engine is HIGHLY optimized. im going to try it on my laptop and see what the frames are like because fifa pc runs ALOT smoother than PES 11.

I think Personality+ is actually a pretty good addition. So far my favorite player in the game is...Pepe from Real. He is a beast in defense. His tackling is great and he reads the game perfectly. A number of times he intercepted a number of great passes and he wins most of the challenges. My second best favorite player from the demo is Terry. Also for the same reasons, but Pepe seems to be better :)

Passing is definitely, definitely too slow. It's not just that it's slow it just doesn't have the range - it's REALLY hard to manage long passes on this game as it is, on manual you HAVE to use Y for a decent lengthed pass which is ridiculous.

I thought ea said is the same exact code

It's driving me crazy! Use Y? Hell I'm using the new driven lob pass for any medium to long pass. Makes it really difficult to make quick passing moves in the attacking third, especially with the high defensive aggression in FIFA. I'm actually using semi passing atm cause manual is too slow.

Someone suggested Pro difficulty is best suited for manual controls because the defense gives you a moment more before it comes barging in but the CPU rarely scores even when playing legendary.

Y is better than A, but even that's not sufficient. What's most ludicrous is it seems to be dependent on the player you use. Frankly, if this ships like this manual especially is going to be seriously borked - which is pretty annoying because for short passing it is definitely improved in terms of both realism and playability.

I'm having more joy playing with semi passing at the moment. Not too happy with the way manual passing is playing, at least not on the difficulty levels at which the CPU can sometimes score. They desperately need to tweak the cpu's shooting aim - i've never seen such bad misses.

Also, what's with the crossbar noise sounding like it's hollow tin?

A lot about the game's movement feels unnecessarily clunky. I've also noticed that when you're up against a defender with good slide tackling ability (specifically Pique), if they're going to make the tackle, you will NOT be making any quick moves. That tackle is coming in and you're getting dispossessed.

Like I said though, it really just feels like the CPU doing what it does. Some of what they do seems like it'll be awful hard to pull off if you're the one controlling the players and thus a more balanced game may emerge against another human. Unless Assisted it as easy as my buddy made it seem. Passes still get to players by virtue of them adjusting to meet the pass and the pass itself often finding a way to slide right by a potential intercepter(or?).

I've not seen the AI take 1 long shot in over 20 matches. I hate that. Can see CM getting very boring very quickly AGAIN.

I've seen a decent amount though still too few - problem I'm seeing is the AI can't aim and rarely hit the target. And when I say can't aim, I mean like cr7 hitting a free kick closer to the corner flag than the goal!

Came into work today speaking to a friend who play Fifa. I ask them what they think of the demo? His response was “I don’t like the new passing. My passes were going astray and I don’t like the power bar”.

I then said but its better like that as not every pass should be accurate. He agreed it would be more realistic but not as fun.

Sadly I think many many Fifa gamers feel like this.

I wont get it on release date until I know that the AI is improved over Fifa 10. I want a decent career mode. Does not have to be perfect but just have some variety with the AI and a challenge.

That is why they will never force at least semi assisted passing in FIFA. Never will.

They are there. RM dont really like to shoot outside much but Leverkusen scored a lovely top corner hit and Lyon hit a few long shots, one hitting the bar, against me anyway.

I've been a pes player for as long as i can remember.
I basically suck at tricks, too difficult for me and i end up breaking my thumbs.

Is it possible to get past the defender without all these tricks?

Yes, you can outpace them by using the R3 flick at the right time, your player then taps the ball in front of him while sprinting after it.

Or you can dribble a defender on momentum, going one way and when the defender comes closer switch to the other side, taking him of balance.

Or use the "fake", acting like your gonna shoot or play a long ball and then rapidly tap the X button (PS3) with the direction you want to go to (this is great for taking on the keeper 2)
