Fifa 11 Xbox 360/PS3

FIFA's not bringing much new to the table in terms of on-the-pitch gameplay so that's where much of my interest has quickly deflated. We're seeing subtle applications of much-hyped features but put them all together, it's still a better package for me than PES despite what the latter is introducing this year (and after viewing plenty of gameplay videos, seems to me like its core gameplay is largely the same).

I'm pretty sure the tricky bit in these licensing "issues" stems from coming to an agreement as to where it'll be implemented. They've got it all sorted out for other modes, doesn't necessarily mean it's fair game to have them in these new ones (ie. Creation Centre)

Why the fuck not? That is my question. Doesn't it make more sense to make a licensing agreement for FIFA 11 the game as a whole than it is to explicitly say which modes get the user's creative freedom?

yep, im way more hyped for pes atm as fifa is doing all the wrongs atm.

lets see what the demo is saying

What is PES doing better? They introduced a new passing system where you still can manage to play ping-pong passes. The animations look as stiff as ever and the AI is a complete disaster. I don't see anything that makes me wanna buy PES this year, even if FIFA has done nothing really right (ProPassing,P+,...) at least it has done nothing wrong.

Well for me, what they haven't done is wrong. I'm not excited for PES at all. Not excited for FIFA either. Nothing like last year at least. Clubs I think will be the mode I play only with 1v1 matches with friends and give the manual leaderboards a try if they are any good at finding me a game. I just miss the days where I could play FIFA for 12 months non stop. Since 09 the game I feel the game has stalled quite a bit and that is what gets me.

Who on earth told you the AI in PES is a complete disaster??

Just look at the videos. The goalkeepers are a complete mess an the attacking AI is stupid. Look where your team mates run when you attack, they don't run in position or use free space. The only way to get your team mates to run in free space for an attack is with 1-2s.

apparently the passing in PES is less ping pong then fifa's pro passing. the pace of PES is meant to be briliant and the overal look and feel seems to be better than fifa.

Toss in formation and tactics while where at it and it seems PES has made more of an effort than fifa.

Besides renaming assisted controles to "pro passing" and now being able to control your GK, what else has EA improved apon?

i honestly think fifa 11 on pc and consoles will be very VERY similar. Console fans were all saying how the pc version will be different and a step back but now it seems it wont be as hardly anything has changed in the gameplay department.

@sj

maybe i wont ;)

No ping-pong,no bugs :JAY: The ball moves like it is on rails, I don't feel that the pace is better that FIFA...

And PES just made this effort because the whole PES series on next-gen was shitty as hell. You can make a very good game just slightly better and everybody says: they've done nothing,it just looks like last year. Or you can make a shitty game better and everybody says: Whoa, look what they have done!new menus with fancy buttons and new passing system.

Its just like PES2010 with some new animations and a new passing system. nothing else.

i thought the MLO build is a 70% build?

actually playing the game > videos and images of it. Mate im just going by what "fifa" players have said to me mate.

some fifa fans have said the passing is much better than fifa.

in that video, its not "impossible" to pass like that even on semi/manual on fifa if your really good.

the question you should really be asking is can a new player pass like that in their first match in either PES or fifa in its default settings?

if the answer is no then it aint a ping pong but if the answer is yes then it is a ping pong rubbish passing system.

Apparently is the word though JM.
All you do is assume things without trying out yourself. Time will tell fella.

It's like saying your next wife who you haven't even met yet is a crap shag!

Now ssshhh now virgin! :)

Yeah yeah, 70%...like the last 3 years, where every demo was only at 70% and the final version was just like the demo.

No offense man, I just don't see why PES should be better than FIFA. To me, PES next-gen will never be the same as PES for PS2 and they done nothing over the years to make it better, sometimes they even made it worse (remember last year where they introduced the response delay..).

Those that are following NBA 2K11 know that the developers of that game have added more to their game this year than Konami and EA combined in their respective football games. Makes me wonder how hard they actually work...

I think you've fallen into the category for a critic cherry picking faults.

I'm sorry but PES's AI system being a disaster? Really, i know you used to play the game way back 4 years ago when PES 6 hit but you clearly out of touch with your knowledge about how it plays now.

PES's Ai isn't basic like FIFA's where every players just runs forward and very easily finds space because FIFA's defensive AI is just an abomination. It's actually very complex and you need to setup your team and make sure you have the individuals that will make the runs you need.

Actually that was a 60% code, I'm not sure how you can judge a half finished game. With crazy bugs like you posted which are to be expected at a game only 60% completed! Even a tweaked FIFA 10 (FIFA 11) at 60% would have had abnormal, wild bugs like that, but seriously? Judging a game at 60% Not even that you have ignored the gamescom videos showing the goalies to be much improved and making multiple saves all over the place!

Also again on the bugs. Didn't see any of those atrocities appear at gamescom.

After being a real Fifa fan from 08-10 I switched back to PES2010 a few months ago. The single player experience is far better, at most of that comes down to the AI. It's not perfect by any means, but FIFA's AI is utterly gash most of the time against the CPU. Enough people talk about the major faults on here, so I won't bother, but I think it's very unfair to call out PES on that front.

I think FIFA 11 is actually going to be better received than we think. A fair number of people skipped hte WC game, and therefore this will definitely be a major upgrade from 10. If they can get different players feeling different, the engine and extras are there to make a superb experience.

That said, I think both games will be 7/10 for hardcore gamers this year. Next year I fully expect Konami to come into their own, which hopefully will convince EA that FIFA for dummies will not work as a long term business model.

Why do you think PES will be 7/10 beach? I don't agree with most of what Mainz said from my experience playing it. The ball isn't as on rails as FIFA, the passing is not as pingpong as FIFA, the bugs are because it's an E3 build (50-60% was what I'd heard) and the AI/individuality really is great compared to FIFA. Seems like cognitive dissonance and a splash of confirmation bias on his part.

Bullshit.

In FIFA it is called ping pong passing, in PES it is called great teamplay:P I agree with you, PES serie is lost. It has the same flaws as PES 08/09/10.
I was really looking forward to PES 2011, but the videos doesnt impress me at all. Yes, it looks better than in previous years, but the goalkeepers are still pathetic, physical play is almost non-existent and the AI is still worse than in FIFA (even if there is also very often dumb:SMUG:). Konami are on the right way, but still far from the end...

I know what you mean, 2K has taken big leaps this year.

Id wait for the demo Jonney, that stuff that happened in that PES video and in Fifa 10 was all but gone in the demo i played a gamerbase. I maybe saw it 2-3 times in 20+ games, also as soon as the person i was playing started to do it, i could change my tactics and stop it.

If you held 'pressure' all the time maybe they could do it against you but if you played properly ping pong was all but dead. More directional error and it'll be perfect. Its a big thing and they seem reluctant to add it but its something they can change (even after release) if we moan enough.

I had posted this before, but was lost between comments on the 10 men Arsenal pic. What do you guys think of this?

I would like to have an "Absolute" option for the Trick Stick.

Instead of player facing relative, or camera relative, the execution of tricks could have the absolute option. Down, Up Up on the Right stick would always do the rainbow flick, Semi-circle from right to left the elastico, etc.

This would avoid me pulling off the wrong trick about 90% of the time.

I've just read that the PES demo will be available a week earlier on the 8th of september for Playstation Plus users. Hopefully EA will do the same!

Mainz05,

I know it's all your opinion. I understand you making up your mind on past games because you've actually played them, but c'mon dude, already made up your mind over videos?

I myself have watched the Fifa videos as well, and even though I didn't like what I've seen so far, the things I don't like from previous iterations that is, I never made up my mind. Just can't judge it yet and it's not fair. I'll have to play the demo and judge it then.
