Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread
Man before I realised it was FIFA 08 in that video I was so disappointed...
Every time I hear something EA has tried to fix or implemented a new feature it's like they've read my mind. Because as I understand it you can now in 09 run fast/hard at players so they fall over? That will be sweet because I hate it how your player just stop behind the opponent and don't do shit if you mistime a standing tackle even if you had great speed.
I really miss one thing from PES 5 (I think it was) and that is when you mistimed a standing tackle it would often result in a freekick. All the kids hated it though so it was removed in the next version so it was back to 2 freekicks per game. It was the only time it required skills to defend and as an attacker you could take advantage of this by cleverly trap the ball when someone was trying to take it from a bad angle.
Thank you!
Alot of people complain about PES5 and the fouls. I think it is spot on.
Basically, in FIFA08 it is very easy to get close to players (you can run just behind a CPU player for a long time and he will evade and turn to keep you from passing him. But once you are there, your player won't do anything like use his arms or put legs out etc.
In PES5, it was instead harder to get close to players, but your player would actually do stuff once he was close to a defender.
BUT, it was only if you were holding X that your player would be aggressive and cause alot of fouls. Carefully tapping X at the proper times instead meant that your player would do jabs at the ball and such with the proper timing.
The only bad thing with PES5 was perhaps that sometimes a situation didn't look like it deserved a freekick. In other words, it didn't look like much happened, your player would run into an opponent and there would be a freekick. The realism of the forces involved in a collision and battle were kind of lost, making it seem like the ref were blowing the whistle for little things (even though you just charged full-speed into an opponent, it just didn't seem forceful enough to warrant a freekick).
It's sort of the same thing with real football. You might see someone take a little touch to the shin and go down crying like a little baby.
But when I stub my toe against my bedleg, I cry too, and that wouldn't seem really forcefull from afar aswell.
But basically, PES5 was great, because as long as you weren't holding X ("attack the opponent mode"), you wouldn't really concede alot of freekicks. BUT it would still happen if you were just running behind a player and clipped his legs, or run into a player with your elbow smashing him away from the ball, etc.
Overall I think PES5 was awesome when it came to the foul and jostle system, it only would have needed some beter animations to really make the force of a collision or such evident, or really make it apparent with an animation that you just hooked that opponents lleg with your foot and he was going down no matter what he tried (because instead of actually seeing his hooked leg go back and not be planted when it should causing him to collapse, PES5 would just play out a more generic fall animation where his leg would go straight through yours, and thus making it seem like he just stumbled slightly).
Hope my point comes across.
But yeah, basically rather PES5 than FIFA08 when it comes to fouls for me.
