Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

in FIFA 08, it feels like your kicking a beachball. The ball is far too floaty, anyone else agree? Corners dont have enough speed or whip on them, do you think they will improve this in 09? If they fixed this and the responsiveness, itd be great

i agree. way to floaty the ball physics.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I know you appreciate AI still has a role to play, even if all players are supposedly human controlled.

I was taking the opportunity to emphasise the fact that the EA AI (copied from Konami) still chooses to favour one team over another at any given period in a match, and your controller input will be completely disregarded at times when your team is on the wrong side of this AI control.

I don't, for one second, think that EA will have removed this hideous feature from their game and I fully expect to find many 10v10 matches to be rendered annoying and worthless because my team is not the chosen one, and likewise, expect to see many opposition players quit as they realise their team is never going to win, no matter what.

Writing "morale" and "mentality" into the gameplay will always result in the sentiment of "why should I bother playing on when the cpu is scritped against me?". I'm sure I'll still be quitting lots of games half way through when it's clear the AI model has already decided my team's morale is such that they will not be allowed to score.

I will be much happier when both EA and Konami realise that scripting mental aspects into the gameplay is utterly false and the very antithesis of gameplay. I have my own mind, I don't need it scripted.

I'll agree, that is really not desirable.

I am sort of for moral and such, but it needs to be designed in a way where it's not just a thing the AI can use when it wants you to loose.

First of all, it needs to be displayed quite clearly. ISS98 etc has morale in the form of a colored box in the substitution menu etc. If you got a few goals against you, the morale would drop (I don't know what effects it had, like certain stats dropping or such). But there you could at least see where it was at, and you could also sub in a player of certain qualities and immediately get a morale boost.
Plus, in the case of PES and FIFA, the players have Mentality stats of various designs. They don't seem to be used in this manner at all. PES' "mentality" stat has been said to make the player react to adversity. Bad mentalty = worse performance when under pressure, Good mentality = improved mentality when scored against.
If this does work as it should, at the very least I would like some graphical or visual cue to see what is happening. Like seeing just how the stats have changed in the formation screen.

I say this simply because I've often been ahead 1-0 against some crappy team, and the crappy team often finds some reservoir of strenght when they are down 1-0, whilst my players just seem to stop trying (in PES). If the mentality thing worked as it should, after 1-0 it should become even more effortless, since the crappy team has crappy players that shouldn't respond well to pressure, and I have an ML team that I've developed for 20 seasons and consists only of all-star players and stat monsters.

I think the ball has excellent weight overall. A slight increase in top speed on shots and such would be welcome for more realism. But overall I think the ball weight is excellent, especially in scenes where you pass a little too hard and the ball makes it all the way to the end line and a goal kick even though you were quite a long way from the line and didn't think it would go out first.

Compared to PES5 is it great. PES would often have the grass stopping the ball too early, which made the ball feel weightless and without enough energy to overcome the resistance of the grass surface. And the way the players interact with the ball also sells its weight well. In PES you would sometimes have a player shooting a hard shot even though he "cocked" his leg back about 10 cm. THat gives everything a bit of a dodgy appearance, but things like that seem rare in FIFA as much as I've played it. :)

FIFA08 has the best ball physics seen in a football game to date imo. The subtle deflections and flicks that make it change course are absolutely perfect. A good example was yesterday I hit a shot with Fabregas from about 20 yards, a nice curler that hit the post, and the ball physics are so realistic that after it hit the post it curled along the line and hit the other post, then went into the goal. It looked stunning.

I've noticed the same thing in PES (single-player against cpu) but in FIFA08 5v5, I'd say it works the way say you want it to, ie. a team goes 1-0 down and their morale goes down, so the "luck" now goes against them.

I've played many 5v5 matches where a team goes 1-0 down and it is quite clear the cpu is now working against them. It can be frustrating to see my (sometimes very skilful) teams-mates working their butts off, trying to play some really clever football to manufacture some lovely chances, but every shot hits the post, goes high and wide, or whatever. Then, when the team leading gets the ball, a couple of talentless presses of the pass button sees every pass scripted to a team-mate (even with back turned, etc), then a simple press of shoot sees another goal.

Equally, there are matches I've played in where my team has gone 1-0 up and everything we've then touched turns to gold...but deep down, I know the AI model has been working for us and against the opposition.

OK, not every on-line match plays out like that, but some do and when I can see that pattern taking over and it's working against my team, it becomes very tempting to quit, particularly if my human team-mates don't realise they have to now play different to overcome a probability model that has been clearly tilted in favour of the opposition. It is possible to come back frm behind in those matches, but not when your human team-mates persist in just running straight at goal whenever they get the ball, not realising that tactic is never going to work in that match.

Agreed, it's not perfect of course, the ball is ever so slightly too floaty and needs speeding up a smidge, but it's not far off at all, certainly much closer to perfection than some other football game we won't bother mentioning :)

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

They still have Emirates wrong. The panels around the stands should be red not concrete

They have had that look for the Emirates in the last 3 EA games wich is weird(though on fifa 07 on the ps2 they did have a somewhat better look). Especially weird this time around as they(EA) have been to the Emirates several times this last year.. But looking at pictures from stadiums such as old Trafford I guess the stadiums are not done yet..
Glad to see that players look better now and the game looks very promising :))Hoping for a demo in July maybe

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

i think i´ll buy the pc version this year as it has the better ball physics imo.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

wow those pc screens looks like the console version. im a get this on the ps3 though. more people will be playing this game on consoles rather then pc and i get footy games to play online. i could care less for all that captain ur country crap and manager mode rubbish.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

The ball physics have been improved. So lets wait and see.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

ball physics in fifa 08 are brilliant, no question, yes physics used to floaty in previous fifa titles but not anymore, i have been fifa08 a lot lately and i love it, i have gone off euro game bigtime, fifa is where its at, first time ever that im looking forward to fifa more than pes, and those screen shots looking stunning, i could swear thats tv and not a game, how many times have we said that with ps2 games? this is the real deal! i cant wait

it's crap. always will be crap.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

yeah it has been said in the german preview. and last year i had the same opinion when comparing ball physics in next gen and current gen. they said that the ball in next gen 09 still feels to light, thats actually what i was afraid of.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

You might not like it as it is, but to say it always will be is not open-minded.

After all, charlievolano used to be hetro, but now he's seen Gallas and it's all change.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Can anyone tell me whether this 10 vs 10 multiplayer online mode is limited to one person per console or is it possible to invite a few friends over and play together online?
