FIFA 08

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

I haven't played any iteration of Fifa for a VERY long time and the last PES was PES5. Having not played many footie games for a while I am eager to see both Fifa and PES this year.

The thing that stands out a mile in the Fifa vids is the colour pallete, it is amazing. The lighting effects and general look of the game is much more appealing than the PES stuff I have seen.

love that video (well spects of it) The full stretch save from the dipping volley looks awsome, love the way the crowd is right behind the goal and the lighting effects look superb.

FIFA 08 Q&A
10-Sep-2007 Interview: Producer talks balls

FIFA 08 is coming to every platform under the sun at the end of the month but it's the PS3 and 360 versions that'll tickle the fancy of football fanatics the most.

To find out how the daddy of the consoles (in terms of raw power) will propel the series forward we caught up with producer Joe Booth.

What's the biggest change to the FIFA formula in your opinion?

Joe Booth: I think to follow a formula is a bad idea, it makes us predictable and if we are predictable then there is no reason to buy the game each year. Our job is to surprise and amaze our fans, to challenge ourselves to reinvent what a football game can be.

The big challenge for FIFA 08 was to unlock the potential of our new football engine which we built from the ground up to take advantage of the Xbox 360 and PS3's multi-threaded, multi-processor hardware.

Getting to 60 frames per second on PS3 was also very challenging because this is a new complex platform and you have to spend a lot of time to adapt to its strengths.

Tell us how FIFA 08 will take advantage of this technology in terms of gameplay.

Booth: The engine was designed from the ground up to use the power of these machines for gameplay. FIFA 07 on the Xbox 360 was the first game to use this new engine and for the first time our animation system was able to dynamically adapt to the ball.

This meant it was separate from the animation and the player reacted to it in real-time depending on his attributes.

What are some of the gameplay changes to this year's game?

Booth: For this year, we have rebuilt the shooting system to use an almost infinite number of contexts to affect how the foot strikes the ball and how error is applied. So if you're off balance, using your weaker foot, turning, under pressure from a defender - all these things are taken into account along with the ball's spin and direction.

Each player's AI brain now analyses 35 different points each brain cycle -- that's over 1,000 options each player is processing per second. They use a new threat and opportunity map system which makes each player completely aware of his surroundings and allows him to study the pitch for space and danger.

Our new organic building block skill move system builds on our animation system. Skill moves are now made up from 'blocks' and can be chained together for you to create your move or reproduce your favorite stars.

So now you can combine skill moves together as you develop your own abilities. Some of the skill moves you can starting with are simple step-overs, fakes, rolls and touches, and as you become more skilled and confident with the controller you can build your repertoire to advance to more complex 360's, flip flops and rainbow kicks.

Can you give us examples of how important online is to FIFA 08?

Booth: I'm a big fan of online. Last year I built Interactive Leagues for FIFA 07 on current gen. Each week I go into a recording studio to record a podcast which is automatically played each time you boot up FIFA on PS2, Xbox or PC - we talk about the interactive leagues vs real world leagues and answer questions from the community on gameplay and the future of the game.

I think we are the only developers who do this kind of thing. That's how passionate I am about reaching out and connecting to the online community.

For FIFA 08 we are bringing Interactive Leagues to PS3 & Xbox360. We have a new feature called Online Leagues which allows groups of up to 32 friends to create their own league how they want.

We will be allowing you to upload video. This works from the instant replay menu. You will have five slots on our website and you will be able to choose which camera and which slot and it will upload it. You then go to the website and you can share it with friends, enter it in competitions, and vote on other peoples goals.
We will continue the pod casts bringing them to Xbox 360 and PS3. We will also be announcing more community based initiatives in the near future.

Will user generated content be a feature in the 360, PS3 versions? If so, what areas are you looking at?

Booth: The main thing is the video upload - we look forward to seeing how people do skill moves and score goals that we never dreamt possible. This will be a great way for fans to share their own highlights and bring the community together.

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

I want to praise that interview to the hilt, with the community side of things especially (it sounds beautiful, you'd never get Konami doing that - and I can't wait to see "Goal Of The Month"! How happy would that make the countless PES fans who are uploading their videos to tons of websites every week). But you get the feeling that, this is EA we're talking about, multinational faceless corporate EA... I'd feel so dirty. :eh:

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

32 friends in a league? Put my name down for the league!

Awesome

even if this game dosnt live up to expectations you have to give credit to EA for actually trying something new, instead of just tweaking each year

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

I've just seen todays updates in the thread I'm honestly very impressed. I just wish the PES fanboys would stop coming into the thread and talking nonsense. Always picking faults etc. If you don't like the game then fair enough but enough of the attempting to convert everyone to your way of thinking. It's not going to adversly affect you if someone else buys and likes FIFA on the contruary it might actually benfit you as Seabass might get his finger out and finally attempt to utilise the new powers of the PS3/360 he has at his disposal instead of trying to pass of PS2 games as next gen.

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

Got my name in the hat to join the league, can't wait! :) Always wanted to play a proper league online instead of one-off friendlies, something to aim for in the long-term!

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

the good thing about this league is that it will take no setting up at all because the 360 does it all for you :)

the only hard thing is getting people online at the same time

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

I tend to play on my console through the week on an evening and on a Sunday, rest of the time im either at work or out with the missus...........shopping phh.

Saturdays are a no no for me, Home and Away season ticket holder lol.

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

Yeah thats a really good feature, being able to have all the results/games in an online ingame setting. Better then the pes5 league where we had to pm all the scores and stuff. Although i dont think ill be joining it, just dont have the time to be availeble for matches atm, which is a shame as its really good fun when playing like minded (fairplay) gamers. Had some really good matches in pes5, although the lag at times was very frustrating.

Agreed Jay,although PES is a bit more of a PS2 game but not much of anext gen game

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

OT - the fair way to do fixtures is do give a weeks deadline and leave it up to the two opponents that week to arrange a meeting time.

Back On Topic - This is shaping up to ruin my relationship with my wife.

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

Yep a European should set up the league for timezone problems.

Then allow for 3-5 days for each league game.

Players should be picked at random and then get to choose there teams like Gomito#10 said on the other thread.

Re: FIFA 08 (Next Gen Chat)

My memory is not the best but were the 07 and UCL demos good representations of the final game last time? If not I really may give the 08 demo a miss as I don't want to spoil it.

EDIT: Who am I kidding I'm gonna checking live like mad on Thursday
