I can only speak on some of the matches I saw, but last year vs Shakhtar (in the 5-1) Barca crowded the ref to get Razvan Rat and Jaroslav Rakitsky booked. Both the cards were hardly even fouls, let alone yellow cards, but once again the crowding of the ref (again Valdez went on one of his "crusades") contributed to the yellow.
Actually in the Ukrainian (well Russian-Ukrainian) news this "gamesmanship" was talked about, both Lucescu and Yuri Semin (basically the two best coaches alive to have worked in Ukraine) said it was a facet of Barcelona's play they noticed more than other teams. Lucescu said something like before the game he warned his players that any tackle and Barca will try and get them booked.
Personally I think some of the diving/carding strategy is down to Guardiola, simply because it didn't seem to happen anything like as much under Rijkaard. Yes there are some different players there now, but I don't remember the likes of Valdez, Pujol and Messi doing all the card gestures, running to the ref, diving etc back then. I'm not saying it's all Guardiola's idea, but I think he has no problem with these antics.
